ARF’S HOVHANNISYAN CENSURES "UNIQUE OPPOSITION"

Yerevan (Yerkir) – Speaking at the February 2 session of the National
Assembly, Vahan Hovhannisyan, the leader of the ARF faction in
parliament, commented on the actions of those alleging that the ARF
is a fake opposition party.

It is normal that opposition forces in transitional countries often
question the legitimacy of the authorities, Hovhannisyan said. "But
Armenia demonstrated it could be unique even in this field when one
part of the opposition is trying to question the legitimacy of the
other part of the opposition – not the authorities – in international
organizations. Never before, a vote has been conducted in the Council
of Europe – or other international organization – to determine who
is opposition in Armenia."

Hovhannisyan went on saying that this "unique" situation doesn’t help
Armenia’s image, and such methods blow serious hits to our image.

On February 1, the whole Armenian delegation to PACE, David
Harutyunyan, Naira Zohrabyan, Artsruni Aghajanyan and Armen Rustamyan
held a press conference at the National Assembly. In the course of
the conference, the question about the dinner in connection with the
election of the PACE new chair aroused much interest, in particular
the question who participated in it from the Armenian delegation.

David Harutyunyan clarified that he used to be a member of the
European democrats group as well as Chavushoglu did. And they had
numerous occasions to meet in restaurants. Harutyunyan says meeting
a diplomat one does not have to express their opinions, independently
from the political opinions of the other person. And if the question
is whether the Armenian delegation participated in the dinner, as
Harutyunyan said, they did.

The new permanent member of the Armenian delegation to PACE Artsruni
Aghajanyan gave his clarifications too saying that "it was just a
gesture, he was elected chair and we shook hands for a second and
left. Do we have to see him an enemy and not to attend sessions?"

Naira Zohrabyan also spoke saying that she and Armen Rustamyan did
not accept that invitation and did not attend the dinner.

ARMENIA FULFILLING ITS OBLIGATIONS, EXPECTS SAME FROM TURKEY: NALBANDIAN TO CLINTON

RA Minister of Foreign Affairs Edward Nalbandian, during a business
visit to London on January 28, participated in the London Conference
on international security assistance to Afghanistan, organized
by Britain’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown and co-hosted by Afghan
President Hamid Karzai and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. There
were about 70 foreign ministers present at the conference and 10
leaders of international agencies.

Conference participants approved a joint announcement which reiterated
familiar aspirations for boosting the country’s security, development
and governance, but, according to Time Magazine, fixed targets are
in shorter supply – and some appear to have been scaled back.

While in London, Nalbandian held a few bilateral meetings, one of
which was meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

According to the RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs press office, the
parties expressed satisfaction at the friendly partnership between the
two countries, as well as their preparedness in continuing mutually
beneficial steps to strengthen and deepen cooperation even more so.

Nalbandian and Clinton turned their attention to efforts in
establishing Armenian-Turkish relations. The U.S. Secretary of
State re-confirmed U.S. support for the speedy ratification and
implementation of the Protocols aimed at establishing relations
between Armenia and Turkey.

The Armenian foreign minister noted that the Armenian Constitutional
Court’s ruling is one more proof that Armenia is fulfilling its
obligations in the process, adding that he expects the same approach
from Turkey.

According to a release issued by the Minister of Foreign Affairs
of the Republic of Armenia, the parties also discussed the latest
developments in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement process.

Nalbandian placed importance on the U.S.’s role as a OSCE Minsk
Group co-chairing country, and presented the results of the January
25 meeting between Armenia’s and Azerbaijan’s presidents.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The level of public awareness of the processes in the
secondary securities market of Armenia is very low, Armen Melikyan ,
CEO of NASDAQ OMX Armenia Stock Exchange told reporters on January
29 in Yerevan. According to Melikyan initial public offering (IPO),
realized by Artsakh HPP at the NASDAQ OMX Armenia stock exchange is a
first and established IPO in Armenia. "But I cannot say the same about
the quotation of the same securities on the secondary market," he said.

According to him, not the IPO was done incorrectly, but the process
should be divided into two stages – first placement and quotation on
the secondary market.

"In Armenia there are excellent experts who can organize a primary
offering for any company, but after the first stage, when the
securities come to the secondary market, there are few skilled
professionals who can implement and maintain this process in the
secondary market," Melikyan said.

The NASDAQ OMX Group, Inc. is the world’s largest exchange company. It
delivers trading, exchange technology and public company services
across six continents, and with over 3,900 companies, it is number
one in worldwide listings among major markets. NASDAQ OMX technology
supports the operations of over 60 exchanges, clearing organizations
and central securities depositories in more than 50 countries.

In January 2008, Nordic exchange operator OMX Group acquired 100%
of shares of the Armenian Stock Exchange (Armex) and the Central
Depository of Armenia (CDA). After the combination of NASDAQ and OMX
in February 2008, Armex and CDA have become fully owned by the NASDAQ
OMX Group, Inc. For more information on the NASDAQ OMX Group, Inc.

PIANIST VAZGEN VARTANIAN TO PERFORM AT CHOPIN’S 200TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ On February 18, Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory
will host pianist Vazgen Vartanian ‘s concert.

Concert program features 4 ballads and 4 scherzo’s authored by great
polish composer Frederic Chopin. With his Moscow’s performance,
the pianist will start a world tour covering cities in Russia, CIS,
Europe and US.

Vazgen Vartanian was born in Moscow, graduated from Moscow state
conservatory and received Master of Fine Arts Degree in US. The
pianist presented extensive repertoire of great compositions at his
concerts in Germany, Italy, Switzerland as well as Poland, Hungary,
Czechia and other European states.

Frédéric Francois Chopin was a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist.

He was one of the great masters of Romantic music. Chopin was born
in the village of Å"elazowa Wola, in the Duchy of Warsaw, to a
French-expatriate father and Polish mother. He was regarded as a
child-prodigy pianist. On 2 November 1830, at the age of twenty, he
left Warsaw for Austria, intending to go on to Italy. The outbreak
of the Polish November Uprising seven days later, and its subsequent
suppression by Russia, led to Chopin’s becoming one of many expatriates
of the Polish Great Emigration.

In Paris, Chopin made a comfortable living as a composer and piano
teacher, while giving few public performances. Though an ardent
Polish patriot, in France he used the French versions of his given
names and in 1835, possibly to avoid having to rely on Imperial
Russian documents, became a French citizen. After some ill-fated
romantic involvements with Polish women, from 1837 to 1847 he had
a turbulent relationship with the French novelist, Aurore Dupin,
better known by her pseudonym, George Sand. For the greater part of
his life Chopin suffered from poor health and he died in Paris in 1849,
aged thirty-nine, from pulmonary tuberculosis.

Chopin’s compositions were written primarily for the piano as a solo
instrument. Though they are technically demanding, the emphasis in his
style is on nuance and expressive depth rather than sheer virtuosity.

Chopin invented musical forms such as the instrumental ballade and
was responsible for major innovations in the piano sonata, mazurka,
waltz, nocturne, polonaise, étude, impromptu and prélude.
