NO NEW KARABAKH AGREEMENTS EXPECTED DURING PRESIDENTS’ DINNER IN ST. PETE – KREMLIN AIDE

No new agreements are expected on the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement
at an upcoming meeting between Russian President Dmitry Medvedev,
Azeri President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan
in St. Petersburg, Kremlin aide Sergei Prikhodko said.

"We are not setting the goal of reaching new agreements or holding
a detailed discussion of the problem of Nagorno-Karabakh," Prikhodko
told journalists on Thursday.

Medvedev is set first to meet with Aliyev and then with Sargsyan
on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg Economic Forum on Thursday,
after which the three will have a working dinner.

"This is not a special tripartite meeting on settling the Nagorno-
Karabakh problem. We are not setting the goal of pursuing some special
project, as quite an intensive dialogue within the [OSCE] Minsk Group
is under way. We are not setting ourselves super-tasks," he said.

"This will be a working dinner including familiarization with St.

Petersburg’s brilliant sights," Prikhodko said.

"It is Russia’s fundamental position in the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement
process that no recipes should be imposed on the conflicting parties
from the outside, assuming that the main responsibility for the final
choice should rest with the Azeris and Armenians themselves," he said.

A diplomatic source told Interfax earlier that, before meeting with
the Russian president, the Azeri and Armenian presidents would have
a bilateral meeting, which would be preceded by a meeting between
the Azeri and Armenian foreign ministers.

Azerbaijan, Baku, June 6 / Trend News / Presidents of Azerbaijan and
Armenia, Ilham Aliyev and Serj Sarkisyan, agreed on the mediators’
proposal for the Presidents to continue their meetings in the nearest
future, if possible in July, says the statement of Co-Chairs of
the OSCE Minsk Group, published at the OSCE official website, as a
result of the fifth meeting between the two presidents, held in Saint
Petersburg, Russia on 4 June 2009.

The Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group (Ambassador Yuri Merzlyakov
– Russian Federation; Ambassador Bernard Fassier – France; Deputy
Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Bryza – United States) took part
with the Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office
Andrej Kasprzyk in the meeting of Presidents.

"During their tete-a-tete conversation as well as at the working
session held afterwards with the Minsk Group Co-Chairs and the
Ministers of Foreign Affairs, the Presidents discussed the overall
conception of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement advanced by the
mediators and reviewed some of the elements of the proposed settlement
that have not yet been agreed", says the statement.

"The conversation took place in a constructive atmosphere and resulted
in positive steps that narrowed the differences between the two
countries on a number of the Basic Principles of the settlement",
says the statement.

"Because of these positive developments in their discussion, both
Presidents asked the mediators to continue their shuttle diplomacy and
to open a new and major subject outlined by the Madrid Document which,
according to their views, still remains the basis of the negotiation",
says the statement.

BEVERLY HILLS (Asbarez)-Despite her age, Zoya Baghramyan says she
feels like she’s 18 years old, because just as one receives a passport
at 18 in Armenia, she realized her life-long dream by receiving her
Armenian citizenship and her official Armenian passport at a ceremony
Monday at the Armenian Consulate General of Los Angeles.

Baghramyan completed her dual-citizenship application in March of
last year and in May, in Yerevan standing next to the tri-color and
with the singing of the National Anthem she received her Armenian
citizenship, becoming the first Angeleno to receive that status.

During the ceremony Monday, Armenia’s Consul General to Los Angeles
Grigor Hovhannisyan presented the passport again and a memento on
this occasion.

The Consul-General also announced that this year, the Consulate has
received double the number of dual-citizenship applications than
last year.

Baghramyan was born in Azerbaijan and fled the country in 1989
after the Azeri pogroms against Armenians in various parts of the
country. She first went to Moscow and in 1996 she moved to the United
States and became a citizen.

ArmInfo. The Iran-Armenia railway is a project of great strategic
importance not only for the two states but also for the whole region,
Iran’s ambassador to Yerevan said on Wednesday, IRIB reported.

Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Seyed Ali Saqqaiyan declared that the
railway can be used, for among other things, cargo transportation.

"Besides that we expect the investors to display interest in the
project and Russia seems keen on participating in the implementation
of the project," the Ambassador noted.

Armenia and Iran formalized their plans to construct the railway
connecting the two neighboring countries in April when Armenian
President Serzh Sarkisian signed an agreement to that affect on his
visit to Tehran.

Experts and specialist are now discussing different options for the
direction of the railway, Ali Saqqaiyan said.

According to early estimates, $2 billion of investment is needed
for the construction of the railway. The World Bank and the Asian
Development Bank have already signaled interest in the project.

POLITICAL SCIENTIST: NALBANDYAN WANTS TO DIVERT WORLD ATTENTION FROM THE FACT THAT THE ARMED FORCES OF ARMENIA ARE OCCUPYING THE TERRITORY OF AZERBAIJAN

Armenian Foreign Minister wants to distract world attention from the
fact that the armed forces of Armenia are occupying the territory of
Azerbaijan, said political scientist Aydin Mirzazade, commenting on
the statements of Armenian FM Edward Nalbandyan that Azerbaijan is
allegedly "attaching a religious nature to the Karabakh conflict and
speculating with the religious feelings of the OIC member-states.

According to him, the brightest sample of this is the recent incident
when two Armenian soldiers transferred to the Azerbaijani side.

"Why are there Armenian citizens in the occupied Azerbaijani
lands? Does Mr.Nalbandyan have an answer to this question? This is
the first moment.

On the other hand, this is not the first case when Armenian
representatives want to attribute to others the activities that they
are dealing with", said the political scientist.

According to him, it is not Azerbaijan, not the OIC, but on the
contrary, the leadership of Armenia and the Armenian diaspora abroad
that are all the time trying to inject a religious nature to this
question trying to impose on the world community that Armenia is a
Christian country.

"On several occasions the leadership of Armenia and Armenian
intellectuals argued that the co-existence of Muslims and Christians in
the same region is impossible. Azerbaijani cultural values, memorials,
temples and mosques are demolished in the Azerbaijani lands, occupied
by Armenians.

And in the center of Baku there is still a Armenian Apostolic Church,
which is protected by the state. It is not protected on purpose,
as Baku people do not even think to treat this establishment
otherwise. And what is done to our mosques in the Armenian-occupied
Azerbaijani lands?", asks he.
