Calmy-Rey met with officials from the two countries along with United
States President Barack Obama on the sidelines of a United Nations
conference in Turkey.

It is the first time Switzerland has confirmed it is working to bring
the two sides together.

Obama has called on Armenia and Turkey to normalise relations.

Calmy-Rey had been in Turkey for a meeting of the UN’s Alliance of
Civilizations, where she took part in a panel discussion, attended a
lunch with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and had dinner
with Turkish President Abdullah Gul.

The foreign minister was part of a six-person delegation that heard
Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the former Danish premier and incoming Nato
secretary-general, call for a deeper dialogue with the Islamic world.

Rasmussen will become the Nato head on August 1 after longstanding
opposition from the Turkish government, which was angered over
the publication in Danish newspapers of caricatures of the Prophet
Mohammed.

Rasmussen said an apology was out of the question. "Freedom of
expression is vital. The same applies to the respect for religious
feelings. We have to bring both to an exact balance," he said.

Ministers and heads of state from some 30 countries attended the
meeting. The Alliance of Civilizations was founded in 2005 by Spain
and Turkey months after the bloody bombings in Madrid.

US President Barack Obama has cleared many things in a short time. He
has succeeded in presenting the United States as peace-loving
nation. Now he is removing the impression that the US wants the war
to continue. Obama is winning the friends, which is a good sign for
the whole world. Success of Obama means the success of whole humanity
as at the moment he is playing the role of a savoir.

Though his actions and plans Obama has proved that the decision of
Americans to cast their votes in his favour is right. He has changed
the situation in a very short time. Now terrorists on the run in
Pakistan. Though at the moment they have been making great damage,
but they are facing total annihilation. The people of tribal areas
fully support the policies of Obama as they think he is the right
person for bringing peace to the world. He can play the role of savoir.

US President Barack Obama, making his first visit to a Muslim
nation as president, declared on Monday the United States "is
not and will never be at war with Islam"? Urging a greater
partnership with the Islamic world in an address to the Turkish
parliament, Obama called the country an important US ally in
many areas, including the fight against terrorism. He devoted
much of his speech to urging a greater bond between Americans
and Muslims, portraying terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda as
extremists who do not represent the vast majority of Muslims.

"Our partnership with the Muslim world is critical … in
rolling back the violent ideologies that people of all faiths
reject, he said. The US president is trying to mend fences
with a Muslim world that felt it had been blamed by America
for the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Obama also said Washington wanted to reinvigorate efforts
towards creating a Palestinian state.

"Let me be clear: the United States strongly supports the
goal of two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side
in peace and security," he said in the speech to Turkey’s
parliament.

Chief Palestinian peace negotiator Saeb Erekat welcomed Obama’s
words, saying he had made a major commitment to the two-state
solution. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office
said Israel was committed to reaching peace and would cooperate
with the Obama administration to achieve that goal.

At a news conference earlier with President Abdullah Gul, Obama
dealt gingerly with the issue of alleged genocide committed
by Turks against Armenians during World War I. He urged Turks
and Armenians to continue a process "that works through the
past in a way that is honest, open and constructive".

Al Jazeera and Al Arabiyia, two of the biggest Arabic satellite
channels, carried Obama’s speech live.

"America’s relationship with the Muslim community,"? he
said, "cannot and will not just be based upon opposition to
terrorism. We seek broader engagement based on mutual interest
and mutual respect."?

"We will convey our deep appreciation for the Islamic faith,
which has done so much over the centuries to shape the world,
including in my own country,"? he said.

The president spoke for about 25 minutes from a small
white-marble-and-teak rostrum in the well of a vast, airy
chamber packed with Turkish lawmakers in orange leather chairs.

Except for a few instances of polite applause, the room was
quiet during his speech. There was a more hearty ovation
toward the end when Obama said the US supports the Turkish
government’s battle against the PKK, which both nations
consider a terrorist group, and again when he said America
was not at war with Islam. Lawmakers also applauded when
Obama said the United States supports Turkey’s bid to join
the European Union.

After meeting later in the day with Turkey’s Prime Minister
Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Obama recognised past tensions in the
US-Turkey relationship, but said things were on the right
track now because both countries share common interests and
are diverse nations.

Zahra says agreement can be reached with Hariri over Armenian seat in Beirut I
April 5, 2009

Lebanese Forces MP Antoine Zahra told Future News on Sunday that an
agreement will be reached with Future leader MP Saad Hariri over the
Armenian Catholic seat in Beirut I district. `We will make sure that
everybody is represented, and let us wait for the Future movement’s
candidates. The Henchag and Ramgavar parties are allies of the Future
movement, and I think a solution will be reached with MP Saad Hariri.’

Zahra spoke about the LF nomination of Richard Koyoumdjian for the
Armenian seat in Beirut I district, saying his party’s announcement of
its candidates during its ceremony at BIEL hall on Saturday was
`neither the Koran nor the Bible.’ He rejected accusations that LF was
taking others’ share.

Zahra reiterated that LF does not want its representation in the
parliament to be equivalent to the popular support it has. `We have
offered several concessions for the sake of March 14, and this is our
duty.’

PRESS RELEASE

Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian’s answer to the question
of "Interfax" News Agency

Question: Minister, recently some Turkish officials have been making
statements to the effect that the normalization of Armenian-Turkish
relations is conditioned by other issues like the resolution of
Nagorno Karabakh problem and the process of international recognition
of the Armenian Genocide. Could you comment on that?

Answer: The normalization of Armenian – Turkish relations should have
no preconditions and it is with this mutual understanding that we have
been negotiating with the Turkish side.

Normalization of the relations has no linkage to the resolution of
Nagorno Karabakh problem and has never been a subject of negotiations
towards the normalization of Armenian – Turkish relations.

It has been said many times, and I want to stress it again, that the
normalization of Armenian – Turkish relations can never question the
reality of Armenian Genocide.

Today, dozens of states and international organizations have
recognized the Armenian Genocide, which Armenia has welcomed.

I believe, that the statements, which put forth preconditions for the
normalization of Armenian Turkish relations may be regarded as an
attempt to impede the progress reached in the negotiations.

The bank’s press service reported that the event was attended by major
businessmen from all the economic sectors – importers of transport
means, industrial and medical equipment, machinery for construction

The presentation was held to introduce the terms of leasing services,
offers of mutually advantageous cooperation and the advantages of
leasing services to the business circles.

Ameriabank is one of few banks in Armenia that offers leasing services
(since June 2008) and intends to develop them during this year,
says the press release.

The bank also plans to offer these services to organizations in all
economic sectors while providing flexible and competitive conditions.

Director of Union of legal entities of "Lori" cheese producers
Armen Gigoyan expressed his satisfaction with the presentation and
his interest with the bank’s offer. He also expressed hope that the
banks will provide more efficient and flexible conditions.

Financial Director of ABB concern Babken Avetisyan, in his turn,
said that their construction company is importing a great deal of
equipment in the country.

"Currently we have offers from China, USA and we are interested in
leasing services both in respect to imports of the ma chinery we need,
and financing of our buyer-partners," Avetisyan said.

He also said that they have already had a chance to use leasing
services and expressed hope for maximally favorable terms in their
cooperation with Ameriabank.

On the whole, the presentation participants pointed out that the
leasing conditions offered by Ameriabank are quite flexible and
reported new opportunities for their productive cooperation with
the bank.

basis of the Armenian branch of the USSR Vnesheconombank. On September
8, 1992, the Central Bank of Armenia issued a license to the bank.

Former President To Compete For Post As Mayor Of Armenia’s Capital

FORMER PRESIDENT TO COMPETE FOR POST AS MAYOR OF ARMENIA’S CAPITAL
Natalia Leshchenko

World Markets Research Center
Global Insight
April 2 2009

Former president and presidential contender in the 2008 election,
Lev Ter-Petrossian, has been put forward by the oppositional Armenia
National Congress (ANC) as a candidate for Yerevan municipal elections
on 31 May. Early polls are giving ANC 35% support, which is not
sufficient to take up the mayor’s post in one round.

Significance:After an unsuccessful attempt to challenge President Serzh
Sargsyan in the February 2008 presidential poll, that also involved a
week of street protests, Ter-Petrossian remained politically active,
safeguarded by freedom of opinion provisions that the authorities
respect, if reluctantly. His running for Yerevan mayor heralds another
heated political campaign in the making, for the candidate is most
known for his ability to ignite the public. Should he not win,
an attempt at repeating the street rallies is likely, so that the
authorities will be working hard to ensure a clear win for their
candidate instead.

Georgia Worried About Possible Opening Of Armenian-Turkish Border

GEORGIA WORRIED ABOUT POSSIBLE OPENING OF ARMENIAN-TURKISH BORDER

PanARMENIAN.Net
03.04.2009 12:42 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Possible opening of the Armenian-Turkish border will
affect Georgia, which has served as a transit for Armenian cargo so
far, a Georgian official said.

"Opening of the border is a positive phenomenon of itself. However,
establishment of direct trade relations between Armenia and Turkey
will inflict losses on our country," said Jemal Inaishvili, chairman
of the Georgian chamber of commerce.

"The flow of cargo destined for Turkey will decrease. Besides, the
freight turnover in Poti and Batumi ports will be cut," he said.

The Washington Times: Diplomats Foresee Turkey, Armenia Pact

Turkey and Armenia could be on the brink of a historic reconciliation
that will include a joint investigation of the killing of hundreds
of thousands of Armenians by Ottoman Turks in 1915, Turkish diplomats
and specialists say.

Hugh Pope, Turkey project director for the International Crisis Group,
told the Washington Times that "after two years of secret talks,
the historic rivals are nearing agreement on a sweeping package that
includes opening a border closed since 1993, diplomatic relations
and a bilateral intergovernmental commission on issues ranging from
taxes and public health to the history of what Armenians have called
genocide by the Ottoman Empire, which preceded modern Turkey."

Turkey is also expected to issue a "road map" on a solution for
Nagorno-Karabakh, according o the paper. "The parameters of the deal
are very much set," Mr. Pope said. "The only thing holding things
back now is nerves."

The Wall Street Journal first reported the potential deal on Thursday,
and said it could be unveiled as soon as April 16, when Turkey’s
foreign minister is expected to fly to the Armenian capital. Turkish
diplomats in Ankara and Washington confirmed the peace progress but
not the date for an announcement, which could follow by only a few
days President Obama’s visit to Turkey.

"These are extremely serious negotiations," said a senior Turkish
diplomat, who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the
issue. "We are optimistic and we have been working hard and hopefully
we will see positive developments."

"These are highly sensitive negotiations and both sides have gone to
great lengths to keep them secret," added a Turkish foreign ministry
spokesman.

However, the Armenian officials in Yerevan and Washington declined
comment, the Washington Times reports.

‘SCR’ CJSC RESTORES 450 M OF WAY

ArmInfo
2009-04-03 12:30:00

ArmInfo. On April 2, "South Caucasus Railway" CJSC completed
restoration of 450 m of way on Arteni-Aragats section.

"Arteni-Aragats section has not been repaired for over 20 years,
and its technical state is estimated as unsatisfactory", Head of the
Way Service of ‘SCR’ CJSC Ashot Unusyan said. Moreover, he said,
repair of the 6th way of Masis station is carried out in parallel
with these works. "On Monday, we schedule to start the lifting repair
on Spitak-Arshut section with about 1 km of length. In general, the
plan of the lifting repair for 2009 includes 60 km. We shall start
the restoration work on Spandaryan-Proshyan section the next week",
he added.

To recall, SCR management made a decision on organization of "windows"
for implementation of the repair and erection work, as well as the work
on the current maintenance of the way, artificial constructions and
communication facilities, as well as power supply on the railway. The
latter is a temporary stoppage of movement on a certain railway section
for performance of repair and restoration work. Major repair of 45,0 km
of the main way will be carried out within the frames of the programme.

The work will be completed by December 1, 2009.

SCR CJSC is the 100 percent subsidiary of Russian Railways CJSC. In
February 2008 SCR obtained a concession of the state CJSC Armenian
Railway. The agreement of concession of the Armenian Railroad CJSC
for 30 years with a 20-year renewable period was signed in Yerevan
in February 2008. The contract provides for subsidizing the annual
loss in passenger transportation by the concessionaire. For its part,
the Russian Railways will invest $572 million in the Armenian railway
network, including $220 million within the coming 5 years.
