Coronavirus battering Armenia’s wine industry – and what’s being done to stop it

The coronavirus pandemic has also hit Armenian wine producers. Official data shows that 7,000,000 liters of wine are sold annually on the domestic market of Armenia, while another 3-4,000,000 are exported.

This year, consumption of wine and brandy fell both on the domestic and foreign markets. Armenian wine and brandy companies are currently operating at half capacity. Experts believe that the situation will not improve until next summer.

And this worries the farmers who have grown large vineyards in recent years. The harvest this year is good, but they will face big losses if wine and cognac producers accept only a small part of the harvest or buy it at a low price.

What’s going on in Armenia and how they are trying to neutralize the crisis – more details below.

Hopes and risks for farmers

Manvel Sargsyan, who has been working as a wine producer for 14 years, is worried that the coronavirus pandemic will prevent him from being able to sell his large, quality harvests.

“I have five hectares of grape vines, and a harvest of over 100 tonnes. The Yerevan Brandy Factory has already cut their purchases in half, and have changed their preliminary contracts with farmers. We also had contracts, but they have already reported that they were denied a loan, and they might not be able to pay us either. Soon we will harvest our crop, and we will have to face the facts”, says Manvel Sargsyan from Armavir region.

Vanush Fakhuryan, a resident of the village of Kakhtsrashen in the Ararat region, expects 12-15 tonnes of Kakheti grapes. Moreover, this year he hopes to charge even more than last year, given the high quality of the crop.

“This type of grape is permitted to be exported and is intended specifically for wine production. If winemakers who buy grapes from companies are facing problems, it means that we have problems as well. I think the government should help winemakers and provide them with loans. This will help us too,” says Vanush.

Government action

Zaruhi Muradyan, executive director of the Armenian Winemaking and Viticulture Foundation and head of the Wine Academy, is worried that winemakers will not be able to purchase the entire harvest of wine grape varieties.

“To solve the problem, the government, with the help of the fund, is monitoring the projected volumes of crops and purchases in order to understand how much of the expected harvest may remain unused. The government is doing its best to help both producers and farmers,” says Zaruhi Muradyan.

At a meeting with representatives of large wine-producing companies, Minister of Economics Tigran Khachatryan said that the government intends to do everything to ensure that the good harvest of grapes will not go to waste, so that it does not remain in the hands of farmers, but so that the businesses also emerge with no losses:

“We need to find balance and compromise in our solutions. We recently made changes to the program to subsidize interest for loans to agricultural businesses.

Thanks to government subsidies, zero-interest loans will be available until the end of the year, and the repayment period will be extended from one year to two years. This year, additional loans will also be provided for purchasing containers for storing raw materials for wine production. The government intends to help both winemakers and winegrowers to get out of the crisis without any major shocks.”

Only softening the blow

Avag Harutyunyan, the head of the Union of Winemakers of Armenia, believes that the government cannot stop the crisis, and that these measures will only soften the blow:

“These programs are aimed at mitigating the impact of the crisis for 3-4 months. These are local, topical measures, and the government is unable to do anything more. These are programs, some of which are socially oriented, some of which are focused on transferring credit resources or credit burden. A little here, a little there, everything in order to avoid total collapse.”

The head of the Union of Winemakers says that the demand for wine in Armenia comes from three different groups: the locals, tourists and exports.

“Residents buy wines for weddings, christenings, birthdays, drinks in pubs and restaurants. This is not the case now. In the coming year, people will still buy wine out of stress. And they will come out of it impoverished, they will not have the means and opportunities to buy as much alcohol as they consumed before. And there will be no tourists until next May.

For a month now, Russia has been buying wine and brandy, but at a very low price. Prices for French wines dropped to the level of Armenian wines. Our prices have also dropped to make up for this difference, but in the end, we have nothing left. There is no hope for the United States, they will buy for maybe another six months. In the best case scenario, we will reach net zero by next May,” says Avag Harutyunyan.

Hartunyan says that 90% of grapes purchases go to the production of cognac, and 10% to the production of wine. And the reduction in this 90% is what leads to the general economic crisis:

“As for the profitability of exports, in particular, to the Russian market, the profitability of cognac, which covers 80-90% of our total exports, fell by about 15% due to fluctuations in the exchange rate. Overall, profitability fell by 30% in all foreign markets. And the volume of exports to Russia, which is a key market for us, have been cut almost in half.”

Due to the fact that the sale of these products have dropped to almost nothing, only 30% of the barrels and other containers for storing wine at factories are being used. And this creates additional difficulties when purchasing grapes from farmers.

Avag Harutyunyan says that winemakers faced this problem back in April, and the government was asked to provide interest-free loans for the purchase of containers, exempting them from VAT:

“The government did this only a month ago, and the decision came too late. Grapes are harvested starting on August 20, but orders at the factories producing containers must be made in January-February. It’s too late now. I am sure that the entire grape harvest will be purchased, but at a very low price. This is the only way that the factories in their current position can purchase the entire crop.”

Overcoming the crisis

The head of the Union of Winemakers says that during the years of Armenia’s independence, the sector has gone through five crises. This one is both similar and dissimilar to the previous ones. All crises have political and economic elements.

“The way in which it is similar to previous crises is that the same mechanisms are being put into action, and they lead to the same consequences. Markets are closed, grapes are not being sold, barrels are not empty, money is not coming in, salaries are not paid. The situation is the same everywhere. In contrast to previous crises, the political background has changed.

During previous crises, international organizations and the state budget provided funding. But due to systemic corruption, the money flowed into the pockets of the oligarchs in the industry. Now, unlike those crises, money is spent in a targeted way, it is not embezzled, it is spent in accordance with the program. And this inspires hope that we will quickly overcome the crisis. But we will overcome it quickly, not in terms of growth and takeoff, but in order to reach a net zero profit,” says Avag Harutyunyan.

Azerbaijani press: Azerbaijani Consulate General in US’ LA sends letter of protest to UFC President

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug. 3

Trend:

The Consulate General of Azerbaijan in the US' Los Angeles sent a letter of protest to the president of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) promotion company Dana White in connection with raising the "flag" of the internationally unrecognized illegal regime, created by Armenia in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, by an athlete of Armenian origin at the UFC competition, Spokesperson of Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry Leyla Abdullayeva told Trend on August 3.

According to her, the consulate stressed in the letter that this unrecognized regime is the result of the military aggression of Armenia, and brought the unequivocal position of Azerbaijan on this issue to the UFC leadership.

The consulate reminded that the UFC rules allow to display the flags of only internationally recognized states, and required to take disciplinary measures against the athlete for trying to politicize the competition, as well as general measures to prevent occurrence of similar cases in the future.

UFC is the US' Las Vegas-based sports organization holding mixed martial arts fights.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the withdrawal of its armed forces from Nagorno Karabakh and the surrounding districts.

Turkish press: Turkish, Azerbaijani joint drill continues during Eid al-Adha – Turkey News

A joint military exercise by the land and air elements of the Turkish and Azerbaijani armies has continued during the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha, Turkey’s Defense Ministry said on Aug. 1. The military exercise was conducted with the participation of mechanized units and attack choppers in the drill taking place on the territories of Azerbaijan, according to the ministry.

The ministry said over Twitter that the two countries’ contingents have continued the preparations for the drill, which will last until mid-August over the weekend.

The weekend exercises included mechanized units, snipers, fire support teams, commandos and attack helicopters, it added.

The annual exercise aiming to improve the two armies’ cooperation and coordination was launched on July 29 after the tension between Armenia and Azerbaijan has escalated as a result of the former’s attack on the border.

The exercises are planned to be executed in two phases; land and air. The former is planned to be concluded on Aug. 5 while the latter will last until Aug. 14 with warplanes and air defense elements being used.

Turkey has expressed full support and assistance to Azerbaijan while urging Armenia to stop its attacks that would further de-stabilize the Caucasus.

Upper Karabakh, an internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan, is under illegal Armenian occupation since 1991.

Maritime training with Spain

In the meantime, the ministry announced in a separate statement on Aug. 2 that Turkish and Spanish navies are conducting maritime training in the northern Aegean as part of a NATO mission.

“Standing NATO Maritime Group-2 (SNMG-2) units consisting of Spanish ESPS ALVARO DE BAZAN and TCG YILDIRIM conducted maritime trainings with TCG DOĞAN and TCG MARTI on 30 July 2020 in the Northern Aegean Sea,” the ministry said in a tweet.

“One Nation, Two States,” Says Turkey’s Defense Ministry

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that it was closely monitoring the Turkey-Azerbaijan joint military exercises currently underway on the borders of Armenia and Artsakh.

The exercises, which were announced Monday, are in their second day and come on the heels of Azerbaijan’s brazen attacks on civilian and military targets in Armenia’s Tavush Province, beginning on July 12.

The 13-day drills, involving jets and helicopters, will continue in Baku, Nakhchivan, Ganja, Kurdamir, and Yevlakh until Aug. 10. Ground exercises are scheduled to be held in Baku and Nakhchivan from August 1 to 5 with artillery, armored vehicles, and mortars striking simulated targets.

Turkey’s Defense Ministry Thursday, in a Tweet, shared a video of the military drills, accompanied by the slogan, “One nation, two states,” and emojis of Turkish and Azerbaijani flags.

Aleksey Zaytsev, a Russian foreign ministry spokesperson, said that Russia is closely monitoring the drills.

“We are closely following follow the regional situation, particularly considering the recent confrontation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. We strongly urge the sides to demonstrate restraint, including in their ongoing military activities,” Zaytsev said, reported the TASS news agency.

He also said that the Russian authorities have taken all necessary measures for preventing further escalation on Armenia-Azerbaijan border.

“Russia was greatly concerned about the border escalation between two of our allies—Armenia and Azerbaijan,” Zaytsev said during a daily briefing.

“We are confident that the long-lasting Karabakh conflict, as well as any other conflict will be solved exclusively peacefully through diplomatic talks. Our position is shared also by the other OSCE Minsk Group Co-chair countries, the U.S. and France, as well as the United Nations, the CIS and other international organizations,’’ added Zaytsev.

He added that Russian authorities have taken all the necessary measures for preventing future escalation, recalling that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has had conversations with his Armenian and Azerbaijani counterparts. ‘

“We are ready to continue efforts for establishing political dialogue between Yerevan and Baku,” he said.

After Azerbaijan announced the joint military drills with Turkey, President Vladimir Putin of Russian phoned his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and stressed the importance of avoiding any actions that would escalate tensions.

ARF Western U.S. On San Francisco School, Center Hate Crime

July 27,  2020

Armenian Revolutionary Federation Western U.S.

The Armenian Revolutionary Federation Western US condemns Azerbaijan’s acts of aggression against Armenia and Artsakh, Turkey’s support and justification for the use of military force against Armenians that echo Erdogan’s recent threats that Turkey will “finish what their ancestors started” in the Armenian Genocide.

It is this continued hatred encouraged by Turkey and Azerbaijan that has fueled the violence on the border with Armenia when Azerbaijan’s armed forces launched an attack on civilian and military targets in Armenia’s Tavush Province, breaching Armenia’s sovereignty.

This brazen disregard for human rights has spread to numerous countries throughout the world in cities like Moscow, Kyiv, Berlin and London where Azerbaijani mobs have attacked and beaten innocent Armenians, burned and looted Armenian owned businesses in Russia and Ukraine, set ablaze a vehicle belonging to the Armenian Embassy in Germany and have attacked peaceful Armenian protests, like the one organized by the Armenian Youth Federation last week in Los Angeles.

Essentially, the anti-Armenian state policies of Baku and Ankara have spilled outside of the region and are being carried out by a new generation of fanatics who last week vandalized the Krouzian-Zekarian Vasbouragan school and the Armenian Community Center in San Francisco with racial slurs, vulgarities and threats.

We are not, and will not be, intimidated by the coordinated acts of violence and aggression by Turkey and Azerbaijan aimed at Armenian Diasporan communities. We continue to stand in solidarity with the Republics of Armenia and Artsakh and their Armed Forces. We remain on the side of truth and justice and will continue our unwavering commitment to the security of Armenia and Artsakh, as well as pursue the international recognition of Artsakh.

In light of these violent assaults and hate crimes committed against our community, we call on the authorities to offer additional security and protection to ensure the safety of the peaceful Armenian population community  throughout the Western United States and urge the relevant bodies to investigate and prosecute those responsible for these heinous acts.

We further call on our community to remain vigilant yet steadfast in our resolve for justice for the Armenian nation at home and abroad; to take action and continue to support initiatives from the ANCA and support the AYF With Our Soldiers program to assist our soldiers on the border and our fallen hero’s families.

Turkish press: Turkey’s missiles, drones at Azerbaijan’s service: Official – Turkey News

Turkey has declared military assistance to Azerbaijan amid the country’s border clashes with Armenia, in the second day of talks with Azeri defense officials in the capital Ankara on July 17.

“Our armed unmanned aerial vehicles, ammunition and missiles with our experience, technology and capabilities are at Azerbaijan’s service,” said İsmail Demir, the head of Presidency of Defense Industries, an affiliate of the Turkish Presidency in a statement.

“We need to show the world that the two brother countries are in full unity. One nation, two states,” Demir wrote on Twitter after the meeting with Azerbaijani Deputy Defense Minister Ramiz Tahirov and Army Commander of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Kerem Mustafayev.

He stressed that Turkey will lend new defense systems to Azerbaijan and will work together with Baku for the modernization, maintenance and repair of the country’s defense systems.

The show of support comes a day after Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar met Ramiz Tahirov in Ankara on July 16.

“Armenia will pay for what they have done and be brought to account,” said Akar after the meeting, showing full support to Azerbaijan.

Recent border clashes with Armenia have resulted in the killing of 11 Azerbaijani soldiers and injured four. In retaliatory attacks, Azerbaijani officials said nearly 100 Armenian troops were killed.
