Britain's Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson talked international relations and rude poetry with a hoax caller who pretended to be the Armenian Prime Minister in an embarrassing new gaffe for one of Britain's most prominent politicians.

In an 18 minute call, Johnson discussed relations with Russia, the Iran nuclear deal and the Syrian war, according to audio of the call uploaded on YouTube and shared on the Twitter pages of Russian pranksters Vovan and Lexus.

Britain's foreign office confirmed that Johnson had been hoaxed and said the perpetrator was "childish".

The caller, impersonating Armenia's new Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, said he was going to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"I hope he will not poison me with Novichok," the prankster joked, referring to a nerve agent used in the March attack on ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, for which Britain has blamed Russia. Johnson can be heard chuckling on the other end of the line.

Later in the call, Johnson said he would like to come to Armenia to find out more about "Armenia's Novichok experiences", and they also talk about sanctions against Russia and high-profile individuals.

"You throw a stone in Kensington and you'll hit an oligarch," Johnson said, in reference to the central London district favored by Russian tycoons. "Some of them are close to Putin and some of them aren't."

Johnson is no stranger to controversy. In the run-up to Britain's 2016 referendum on EU membership, he compared the goals of the European Union to those of Adolf Hitler and Napoleon, causing consternation in European capitals.

Also in 2016, Johnson wrote a controversial poem about President Tayyip Erdoğan, involving wild oats and a goat, which the prankster complimented him on.

"You're very kind," Johnson said, before trying to bring the call to a close. Some minutes later, as the prankster is talking, the line goes quiet.

"The Foreign Secretary realized it was a hoax and ended the call. We checked it out and knew immediately it was a prank call," the Foreign Office said in a statement.

"The use of chemical weapons in Salisbury and Syria, and recent events in Armenia are serious matters. These childish actions show the lack of seriousness of the caller and those behind him."

The statement did not say when the call was made but it is thought to have been recorded on May 14, as the real leader of Armenia was to hold a meeting with the Russian president that day.

Alexei Stolyarov and Vladimir Kuznetsov, known as Lexus and Vovan, previously fooled other high-profile victims around the world. The two pranksters have denied links to Russia's security services. In 2015, they phoned Elton John pretending to be Russian President Vladimir Putin after the musician criticized Russia's stance on gay rights.

Not Saakashvili. What popular protest leader Nikol Pashinyan will do as Armenia’s prime minister and how Moscow will treat him

Not Saakashvili. What popular protest leader Nikol Pashinyan will do as Armenia's prime minister and how Moscow will treat him
Report by Vyacheslav Polovinko
[Armenian News note: the below is translated from Russian]

Nikol Pashinyan, leader of the protests which have been taking place in Armenia in recent weeks, became the country's prime minister on his second attempt on 8 May when 59 deputies voted for him. Exchanging his casual jacket for a formal suit, Pashinyan has wasted no time and has now offered President Armen Sarkisyan to dismiss the National Security Service head and the police chief. These moves, however, are clearly tactical and even reflective: a revolution's leaders often start by removing the previous regime's appointees. As for other moves – first and foremost, those concerning foreign policy – the new prime minister has been extremely careful so far. It should be noted that Pashinyan's first international visit will be to Sochi where he will meet Vladimir Putin (the Yelk party which nominated the revolutionary is opposed to Armenia's membership of the Eurasian Union, while he himself supports it in principle and is therefore planning to attend the union's summit). The new prime minister's has been quite cautious in his statements about Nagorno-Karabkah, although Pashinyan did find time to travel there in a helicopter on 9 May to Baku's dissatisfaction.

Pashinyan's positions as prime minister are not completely clear yet, although it is now possible to discuss the outline of his agenda, Moscow Carnegie Centre analyst Vadim Dubnov told Novaya Gazeta. The situation is actually simplest as far as Nagorno-Karabakh is concerned: Pashinyan will most likely not change anything at all there. "I do not think that we should project the events in Yerevan onto the Nagorno-Karabakh problem. Pashinyan will operate there within the same narrow margins that Sargsyan operated in. When we are discussing Nagorno-Karabakh, it is important to understand that this problem can only be resolved through compromises. Pashinyan cannot make those now (because he does not want to lose popular support), so the most he can do is to continue discussing the technical aspects of this problem. It is the only thing that is currently possible," Dubnov said.

The situation is more complex in terms of Moscow's attitude to Pashinyan. For the first time in many years, Russian officials demonstratively refrained from interfering in the events in another country, while some of them, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, for example, stopped short of endorsing the fraternal people's independent choice.

Rosneft press secretary Mikhail Leontyev was the only person who spoke sharply against it, declaring during the Komsomolskaya Pravda radio station's broadcast that Armenia "can go to hell". This was followed by something previously unseen: presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov started publicly making excuses for the journalist's words.

"Those comments have nothing to do and cannot have anything to do with Moscow's official policy towards Armenia. Neither do they have or could have anything in common with the warm feelings of friendship and fraternity which Russians have always had for the Armenian people."

Moscow's nonintervention is actually a strategy carefully designed at the "very top", Vadim Dubnov believes. "Moscow reacted very correctly. It felt like a command had been given: 'Let them do whatever they want because they cannot get away from us anyway.' There is an understanding that Pashinyan cannot currently afford to sharply confront Moscow," Dubnov said. The new prime minister's problem stems not only from the fact that more than half of Armenia's businesses are linked with Russia, but also the fact that many businessmen act according to Moscow's interests. "Pashinyan will therefore need to discuss his position on any issue with Russia," Dubnov added.

He cited the example of the Association Agreement with the EU, which former Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan signed, as an example of how this works in practice. Dubnov described the agreement as a "castrated" one, noting that Moscow had decided that the format was admissible. He believes that the policy of relations between the two countries will continue to be based on similar modes of "consultation".

Formulating his own agenda will be Pashinyan's key problem. What does he actually want to achieve through his revolution now that it has succeeded? The new Armenian prime minister is yet to formulate an understanding of future goals of domestic and foreign policies, although experts already feel that Pashinyan will not become either Saakashvili or Yushchenko for Armenia and Russia. "On the other hand, I do not quite understand how one can reform Armenia [in its current state] without being like them," Dubnov says.

Armenia’s new Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expects that the parliamentary majority Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) will approve his government’s program.

“I think yes, it [RPA] will approve, and we will work normally. No one should be tempted to misjudge the political situation”, the PM said at a briefing.

Commenting on the question about the dates of snap elections, the PM said: “We will discuss it. I think this year [the elections will be held]”.

Acting Minister of Emergency Situations Davit Tonoyan will today be appointed Armenia’s Defense Minister, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told reporters after Friday’s cabinet meeting.

“Today, Davit Tonoyan will be appointed Defense Minister; other appointments will come shortly,” he added.

YEREVAN, May 6. /TASS/. Armenia’s opposition leader and candidate for prime minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Sunday he will hold a rally in central Yerevan in the evening on May 7, ahead of voting in parliament. The rally will precede a concert by Serj Tankian, a US musician and singer of the Armenian origin.

"At 20:00 tomorrow, I will welcome Serj Tankian at thr airport," he said. "After that, at 21:00, I will deliver a speech on the Republic Square that will be followed by Tankian’s concert," he wrote on his Facebook account.

Pashinyan said earlier Serj Tankian, who is known to be a supporter of Armenia’s protest movement, was expected to arrive in Yerevan on May 7.

Tankian enjoys enormous popularity in Armenia. His songs were regularly played during protest rallies in Yerevan. His previous tour to Armenia took place in April 2015, when his concert brought together about 50,000 people.

On the following day, May 8, Armenia’s parliament will elect the country’s prime minister. Pashinyan is the sole candidate.

Turkish Press: Muslim woman maintains upkeep of church ‘for God’s blessing’

Daily Sabah, Turkey
April 10 2018

Muslim woman maintains upkeep of church 'for God's blessing'

Every day , Hatun Çaçur cleans up the church she “didn’t want to be abandoned to its fate.”

Adhering to Islam, a religion that holds caring for needy neighbors in high regard, Hatun Çaçur tirelessly works to keep an ancient Armenian church next door in good condition.

An 80-year-old mother of eight, Çaçur refuses to hand over the daily cleaning and maintenance of Surp Kevork church, which dates back to the 17th century.

The church in Derik, a district of the southeastern city of Mardin known for its multi-faith population, fell into disrepair after the last remaining members of the Armenian community left in the 1980s. Before the Muslim woman volunteered to take care of the church built on 1,500 square meters, an elderly couple, the only Armenians left in the district, were tasked with its upkeep. "Yurşalin and her husband Naif used to clean it and keep it tidy, but now they are ill and cannot leave home as much. I didn't want this place to be abandoned to its fate," Çaçur said.

"I do it for Allah's blessing. It is a good deed after all. I am here every day," she said. Apart from simple cleaning, she occasionally works in the church's courtyard, trimming underbrush, watering flowers and caring for trees. Çaçur suffers from illnesses due to old age and has lived alone since her husband's death but refuses to leave the premises unattended.

Turkey's Armenian community numbers around 60,000 and has 33 churches across Turkey. However, most churches do not have congregations, especially those in the Anatolian heartland and cities far from Istanbul, the city with the highest Armenian population. The minority, resettled outside modern-day Turkey during World War I, considerably shrunk in the ensuing decades.

Rep. Schiff Submits Statement to Congressional Record Honoring Victims of Sumgait Pogrom

Washington: Rep. Schiff Submits Statement to Congressional Record Honoring Victims of Sumgait Pogrom

Washington: Office of the MP Adam Schiff has issued the following news release:

Last week, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), Vice-Chair of the Congressional Armenian Caucus, submitted a statement to the Congressional Record honoring the lives of those lost in the pogrom thirty years ago.

Schiff’s full statement is below:

“Mr. Speaker, I rise to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the pogrom against the Armenian residents of the town of Sumgait, Azerbaijan. On February 27 1988, and for three days following, Azerbaijani mobs assaulted and killed Armenians. The violence left hundreds of Armenian civilians dead and injured, women and girls were raped, and some victims were burned alive. Thousands were forced to flee their homes, leaving behind their belonging.

“The pogroms came about as the result of years of vicious, racist anti-Armenian propaganda by Azerbaijani authorities, dehumanizing Armenians. Azerbaijan authorities made little effort to punish those responsible, instead attempting to cover up the atrocities in Sumgait to this day, and denying the government role in instigating the killings. Indeed, even today, racist propaganda against Armenia and Armenians is prevalent in Azerbaijan.

“The assault on ethnic Armenian civilians in Sumgait helped touch off what would become a direct conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan which took thousands of lives and dislocated millions more. The anniversary of Sumgait is a reminder of the consequences when aggression and hatred grow unchecked.

“Mr. Speaker, this April we will mark the 103rd Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, an event the Turkish government, Azerbaijan’s closest ally, goes to great lengths to deny. We must not let such crimes against humanity go unrecognized, whether they occurred yesterday or 30 years ago or 100 years ago. Today, let us pause to remember the victims of the atrocities of the Sumgait pogroms. Mr. Speaker, it is our moral obligation to condemn crimes of hatred and to remember the victims, in hope that history will not be repeated.”

Newly appointed Malaysia Ambassador hands credentials

Today, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Malaysia to the Republic of Armenia Datuk Mat Dris bin Haji Yaacob (residence in Moscow) presented his credentials to Serzh Sargsyan.

Serzh Sargsyan congratulated the Ambassador on appointment and wished him every success in his activities. Noting that this year marks the 25th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Armenia and Malaysia, Mr Sargsyan underscored that the deeply rooted historical affinities between our two peoples, which date as far back as to the 17th century, provide a solid basis for upgrading these warm ties of friendship to high-level interstate relations and effective cooperation in different spheres. Serzh Sargsyan made a point of establishing and expanding the legal framework between the two countries that will add momentum to the ongoing cooperation.

The interlocutors hailed the effective cooperation between Armenia and Malaysia in international organizations. On behalf of the Republic of Armenia, Mr Sargsyan expressed readiness to step up interactions in that direction.

Ambassador Datuk Mat Dris bin Haji Yaacob assured that he would spare no effort to build on the Armenian-Malaysian ties, promote close contacts and mutually beneficial cooperation. The Ambassador presented his views concerning the possibilities of developing cooperation in a number of spheres. Welcoming his ideas, the President of Armenia stressed that the Ambassador’s practical stance inspires optimism that the bilateral relations will be activated in the near future.
