Armenian National Security uncovers group engaged in document fraud

Public Radio of Armenia

The Armenian National Security Service has detected a group of Armenian and foreign citizens that has long been engaged in document fraud.

In particular, during 2016-2017 members of the group printed and sold 40 false documents for foreign citizens, confirming the fact of having completed military service in another country, based on which they were later registered in Armenian military commissariats, obtained citizenship of the Republic of Armenia and were exempt of military service.

Besides, the group falsified and sold a number of driver licenses, birth and marriage certificates, education, residence and vehicle registration documents, which were later presented to relevant authorities in Armenia and foreign countries.

The National Security Service confiscated the devises, stamps, seals and forms used for falsification of official documents, as well as samples of certificates and other official documents made for 140 Armenian and other nationals made on behalf of local self-government bodies and separate organizations.

The eleven members of the group have been charged with forgery under parts 1 and 2 of Article 325 of the Armenian Criminal Code (Forgery, sale or use of forged documents, stamps, seals, letter-heads, vehicle license plates).

PRELATE CONDUCTS DEDICATION AND CONSECRATION CEREMONIES AT HOLY CROSS
CATHEDRAL IN MONTEBELLO

- REQUIEM FOR ARS MEMBERS, VICTIMS OF THE SUMGAIT POGROMS, AND ARTSAKH
MARTYRS

On Sunday, February 25, 2018, H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian,
Prelate, presided over Divine Liturgy at Holy Cross Cathedral in Montebello,
delivered the sermon, and conducted the blessing and rededication of the
renovated Cathedral, the consecration of mosaic murals, and the blessing and
inauguration of the Archbishop Sumbat Lapajian Library and Museum. The
murals depict the Annunciation and our Lord Jesus calling all "who labor and
are heavy laden." Divine Liturgy was celebrated by parish pastor Rev. Fr.
Ashod Kambourian. Very Rev. Fr. Muron Aznikian, parish dean, and Rev. Fr.
Papken Manuelian participated in the service. Among the faithful in
attendance were Executive Council member Mr. Antranik Kasbarian,
representatives of the "Tro" Gomideh and sister organizations, sponsors,
Sunday School teachers and students.
Also on this day, requiem prayers were offered in all Prelacy
Churches for the souls of departed ARS members, for the souls of the
innocent Armenians killed by the Azeris on the 30th anniversary of the
Sumgait pogroms, and for all the martyrs who have sacrificed their lives in
defense of Artsakh.
Prior to the sermon, the Prelate greeted the dean, pastor,
delegates, board of trustees, and parish family, wished them a fruitful
Lenten journey thus far and hoped that they emerge renewed and strengthened
in their faith and ready to serve with greater vigor for the prosperity of
the parish community. His Eminence reflected on the day's special requiem
services, paying tribute to the members and benefactors of the Armenian
Relief Society for their lifetime of labor for the welfare of our nation and
brethren, to the innocent men, women, and children who were savagely killed
in Sumgait thirty years ago, and to the brave young martyrs who have given
their lives in defense of our lands, praying for their valor and sacrifice
to never be forgotten.
Next, the Prelate spoke about the blessing, dedication, and
consecration ceremonies. He blessed and commended all those who over the
years have contributed to the splendor of Holy Cross Cathedral, and in
particular the Tumanjan family who made the most recent renovation and
beautification possible in loving memory of George and Irene Tumanjan, as
well as the Arakelian, Iknadossian, and Manjikian families for sponsoring
the beautiful new murals, urging all to continue to work together, hand in
hand and heart to heart, to keep the Cathedral the lighthouse and stronghold
of the community. Speaking on the opening of the Archbishop Sumbat Lapajian
Library and Museum, His Eminence stated, "Eight years on, our beloved Sumbat
Serpazan continues to live on in our hearts, and now through this fitting
and well-deserved tribute his legacy as a faithful servant of our Lord and
good and true shepherd will endure forevermore."
The Prelate thereafter delivered his sermon on the day's Gospel
reading from Luke 15:1-32, focusing on the Parable of the Prodigal Son which
was the theme of the third Sunday of Great Lent. His Eminence briefly
recounted the parable and then highlighted its powerful and inspiring
message, the utmost extent of God's love, forgiveness, and mercy for His
children. He noted that today too there are many prodigal sons in this
world, those who have distanced themselves from God, from our church, and
from our religious and national values and heritage, adding that without
faith and values we are lost, just as the son in the parable was lost when
he went out on his own. "Let all heed the call to return to God today, to
our church, and to our heritage, and invite others who are lost to come
home," stressed the Prelate, and called on parents especially to lead by
example, to bring their children to church, to Sunday School, and to the
multitude of community organizations, and to cultivate their sense of
national identity from an early age so that it remains with them forever.
Addressing the youth, he urged them to heed the advice, wisdom, and guidance
of their elders, participate in our church and national life, and nurture
their minds, hearts, and spirits with our faith and culture so that they are
equipped with the faith and the will to choose what is good and reject what
is wrong.
The Prelate concluded his sermon by emphasizing that our heavenly
Father is a loving and compassionate God Who came not to judge but to save,
and Who is patiently waiting for the lost to come home to Him, to embrace us
with His love and mercy and shower us with His grace and blessings like the
father in the parable did for his son.
Requiem service followed, after which the Prelate conducted the
blessing and dedication of the Cathedral and the consecration of the murals.
At the conclusion of the ceremonies, His Eminence was led in a procession to
the Archbishop Sumbat Lapajian Library and Museum, which he subsequently
blessed and inaugurated, conducting the unveiling of the plaque and ribbon
cutting alongside clergy, sponsor Mr. Michael Tumanjan, and Board of
Trustees Chair Mrs. Goharik Gabriel. The ceremony concluded with "Cilicia."
A luncheon followed at "Bagramian" Hall. The Prelate delivered the
invocation, after which Board of Trustees Chair Mrs. Goharik Gabriel offered
welcoming remarks. Cathedral renovation sponsor Mr. Michael Tumanjan
delivered poignant remarks on serving and supporting the church. Very Rev.
Fr. Muron Aznikian delivered his remarks, greeting and commending the
sponsors and guests, and invited the Prelate to convey his message.
His Eminence once again commended all the sponsors and supporters
who contribute to the advancement of the parish community, in particular Mr.
Michael Tumanjan. Quoting from Psalm 127:1, "Unless the Lord builds the
house, they labor in vain who build it," the Prelate said to Michael, "you
are a builder by trade, but it is your faith and love for the Lord that
leads your works to success."
The program also featured songs by the Cathedral's choir.

Sports: Meet the Aussie playmaker on an Armenian adventure

Meet the Aussie playmaker on an Armenian adventure

With few young Australian players getting opportunities in the A-League, attacking midfielder Anthony Trajkoski is the latest in a long line of youngsters to pack their bags and chance their arm in Europe.

By  John Davidson

2 Mar 2018 – 2:06 PM  UPDATED YESTERDAY 2:06 PM

Overlooked by both Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City, Trajkoski has joined Armenian club FC Ararat Yerevan on an 18-month deal.

Only 19, Trajkoski has already spent a year on the books of second division Dutch outfit FC Emmen. Now the Melbournian is headed off to the biggest club in the Armenian Premier League with the lure of first-team football in a full-time professional environment.

A skillful talent, who can both score and create goals, Trajkoski debuted for Richmond Soccer Club’s first-grade side in the NPL Victoria at the of age of 18. He first made his name for the club’s Under-20s, scoring wonder goals and winning Richmond’s player’s Player of the year award in 2015.

Trajkoski trialed with both Melbourne A-League clubs as a teenager, but failed to land a deal. He has always harboured ambitions to ply his trade in Europe, but admits playing in the A-League in front of his family also appeals.

However with only nine full-time Australian clubs in the competition, the regular recycling of talent and less than 200 spots available to Aussie-born players, Trajkoski has been forced overseas.

“I did have a few A-League trials but it didn’t work out,” the number 10 told The World Game.

“I was overlooked or whatever the case. It’s disappointing, I’d love to play at home. My family’s there, everyone’s there, it would be ideal to play there.

“But the opportunities are limited, maybe with the amount of clubs there are, I don’t know. It’s difficult, especially with young players.

“But I’m happy I’ve got the opportunity here and I’m willing to take it.”

Already in the past 12 months a host of young Australian players have signed for clubs in Finland, Greece, Scotland, Cyprus and Lithuania. Jacob Esposito has linked with Finnish side Palloseura Kemi Kings, while last year Jack Iredale signed for Greenock Morton in the UK.

Trajkoski spent the 2016-2017 season with the Under-19s of Eerste Divsie side FC Emmen, after a successful trial, scoring six goals in 11 appearances. But he had to leave the club last year because of visa issues.

“I would have loved to have stayed in Holland but it was difficult with documents and passports, because I don’t have a European passport,” he explained.

“I went to Norway for a little bit, I was in Croatia, just doing a few trials. I came back home for a few months, waiting for my next chance, and it came about that this club in Armenia was looking for players. I said I wanted to go, it doesn’t matter where it is.”

Trajkoski landed in the Armenian capital Yerevan, a city of just over a million people, a month ago ahead of the new season. Nicknamed the White Eagles, Ararat Yerevan were founded in 1935 and have a long history of playing in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup.

The club last played in the UEFA Cup a decade ago and the winner of the Armenian Premier League is awarded a spot in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.

The attacker, who can play as a winger or in a central role, is hoping that impressing in Armenia can eventually lead to an opportunity in a bigger European league.

“It’s the biggest club in Armenia history-wise," Trajkoski said. "They did play in the Europa League at one stage. The standard is different.

“We’re doing a lot of double sessions and training quite heavily. They have their differences compared to the way they play and how they do things.

"I think it’s a good challenge. Hopefully it will open up doors for me in the coming seasons ahead. The clubs that finish in the top half of the table have opportunities for their players and the clubs themselves to play in Europe.”

Trajkoski said it has been somewhat of a culture shock moving to the former Soviet country, but he is determined to take this chance.

"It’s been different, obviously to Australia and other places I’ve been,” he said.

“Everything – the language, the people, the culture’s a little bit different. The city itself is very nice here. The people are really friendly. Although I don’t understand Armenian and they don’t understand too much English.

“But they’ve tried really hard to help me settle in. Armenia compared to Australia, it’s probably a little less well off. But I’m here for football.”

Analyst: Pope’s gift to Turkish president gave ‘strong hint’

Panorama, Armenia
Feb 7 2018

Author Anna Mkrtchyan, political scientist

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Pope Francis on Monday at a private audience in Vatican. Following Pope Francis’s visit to Turkey, it was the first visit of a Turkish president to the Vatican in nearly 60 years.

The Pope and the Turkish leader had a 50-minute meeting in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, during which they discussed the situation in Syria, refugees in the Middle East, as well as the fight against terrorism and Islamophobia.

The only issue the Pope and the Turkish president fully agreed on was the status of Jerusalem, with both of them opposing Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

Aside from the issue of Jerusalem, the Pope and the president diverge on several issues, including the Armenian Genocide.

To remind, on 12 April 2015 Pope Francis offered a Divine Liturgy dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, noting in his speech the tragedy that struck the Armenian people was the “first genocide of the 20th century”, thus becoming the first Pope to use the word “genocide”. In response, Turkey withdrew its ambassador to the Holy See for nearly 10 months.

The gifts the Pope and the Turkish leader exchanged were quite interesting and symbolic. Erdogan presented the Pope a 24-piece miniature İznik pottery, which had been made with a ceramics technique popular at the time of Ottoman Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. He also gave him a volume of poems by the medieval poet Rumi translated into Italian and English.

To note, Sultan Suleyman was one of the most famous and powerful sultans of the Ottoman Empire. He reigned in the 16th century, making his way into the history with numerous military achievements. He was close to conquer Vienna in 1529 – an event which would change the course of Europe’s history. Among the others, Suleyman conquered the Christian strongholds of Belgrade, Rhodes, as well as most of Hungary and planned a detailed attack on Rome.

Against the backdrop of this bellicose mood, the Pope gifted Erdogan a bronze medallion showing an angel embracing the world while battling a dragon. "This is the angel of peace who strangles the demon of war," he told the president.

This came as a strong hint to the Turkish leader, whose forces are carrying out military operations against the Kurds in the northern Afrin region of Syria and have been accused of grave human rights abuses.

Well, these pretty symbolic gifts reveal the true intentions and work-styles of their authors. We only can hope that after his meeting with Pope Francis, President Erdogan will reassess his activities and if he wants to contribute to settling the regional issues, as Saint Peter said, “let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it” (Peter 3:11).

Turkish press: Deputy PM Hakan Çavuşoğlu: Allegations of Turkey targeting civilians in Afrin are cover-up for PYD attacks

Deputy Prime Minister Hakan Çavuşoğlu said Turkey is being accused of targeting civilians despite the PYD’s clear disregard for human life as a blatant attempt to cover up what the terrorist group is doing.

The primary aim of Operation Olive Branch led by Turkey is to eliminate the PKK-affiliated Democratic Union Party (PYD) and Daesh elements from Turkey-Syria border so Syrians can safely return home, Deputy Prime Minister Hakan Çavuşoğlu has said.

He rejected all allegations of an invasion and called on those who accuse Turkey of it to look at their own histories.

Çavuşoğlu said the allegations of civilians being harmed in the operation were terrorist propaganda carried out by the PKK, the PYD, and the anti-Turkish lobbies.

He added that the missiles attacks by militants from the PYD and its armed wing, the People's Protection Units (YPG), have targeted houses and places of worship inside Turkey, causing a number of deaths. He said the allegations that Turkey was targeting civilians were being spread only to cover up the PKK attacks.

The foreign minister underlined that the PKK and the PYD were not only hostile towards Turkey and Islam, they were against all humane values including those of Christianity.

He also noted President of the World Council of Arameans Johnny Messo's statement which confirmed that the terrorists were targeting Syriacs as well.

As a politician, who was born in Western Thrace, Çavuşoğlu talked about Turkey's relationship with Greece. He said that Turkey was working to increase cooperation with neighboring Greece but also pointed out that the latter was failing to improve the conditions of the Muslim Turkish minority in Western Thrace. The community lacks ethnic and religious freedom and does not have access to proper education.

Çavuşoğlu said the condition will be a thorn in Turkey-Greece relationship as the Greek authorities fail to bring necessary changes.

There are allegations that civilians are being harmed in Operation Olive Branch, especially from foreign media. What is your take on these allegations?

These allegations are lies spread by the PKK, the PYD, and anti-Turkey lobbies. They are nothing but terrorist propaganda trying to create an unfavorable image for Turkey.

The sad part is that these so-called news pieces are being spread when Turkey is actually being very cautious not to harm a single life.

We are hosting 3.5 million Syrians in our country for years. Moreover, Turkey is trying to help people worldwide through the Turkish Red Crescent, Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA).

You cannot just accuse a country that is helping people around the globe of killing civilians. Our military is being very meticulous so that there is no collateral damage.

It is the terrorist PKK who targets civilians. PKK missiles launched from Afrin targeted houses of worship and killed civilians. On Jan. 24, two civilians died when one rocket fell on Çalık Mosque in Kilis. May God have mercy on their souls.

As this terrorist attack indicates, terrorist organizations do not respect life, belief or religious values. I have visited Kilis after the attack; our citizens have high morale and are supporting the operation. We see that our people have exceptional understanding and insight, which makes us proud.

PKK missiles attacks launched from Afrin also killed other civilians in Kilis and Reyhanlı, including a 17-year-old girl.

Despite the terrorist organization's clear disregard for human life, Turkey is the one being accused of targeting civilians. This is a blatant attempt to cover up what the PKK is doing.

Our allies should never forget that terrorists do not respect any valuea and target all. Disregarding these terrorist attacks toward Turkey in order to undermine our country's just cause might leave them in a hard spot when they suffer terrorist attacks in the future. The PKK and PYD are not only hostile toward Turkey and Islam; they are an affront to all humane values. Our Western friends should remember this fact.

World Council of Arameans (Syriacs) President Johnny Messo condemned the actions of the terrorist PYD/PKK and said Syriacs are also suffering from threats, abductions and oppression. He said "these infractions should end. We demand YPG to be respectful toward Syriacs. We call on the U.S. to relay this message to the YPG." Until 2011, Christians constituted 10 percent of Syria's population. Now, hundreds of thousands of Syriac Christians have fled the country and this fact is being disregarded by Western countries.

On the other hand, these terrorists have forced people to leave their homes especially in Diyarbakır with the trench warfare in 2015. I visited Diyarbakır after this incident. With my own eyes, I saw many historical structures reduced to rubble in the Sur district. Two of the 14 historical structures that were destroyed were churches. One of them was the Armenian Catholic Church, while the other was the Armenian Protestant Church.

All statements regarding the PYD/YPG show that they are a vicious terrorist organization that disregard all religious and humane values. This fact is out there for those who want to see it.

Seeing all of these, it is not possible for us to be indifferent. Regardless of their belief and origin, Turkey never turns its back on those who are being oppressed whether they are in Rakhine region or Haiti. This is the understanding Turkey has inherited from its long-lasting civilization.

Turkey has never targeted civilians and never will. We have seen this during Operation Euphrates Shield. Now, the people of reclaimed villages are welcoming our armed forces and we see them embracing our soldiers with joy.

While Turkey's Operation Olive Branch continues to eliminate terrorist organizations from the country's border with Syria, there are claims that the operation is actually an invasion. How would you respond to these allegations?

I would like to express that these allegations are just ridiculous, as Turkey has never been an invader. Our aim is to prevent terrorist organizations like the PKK, PYD, YPG and Daesh from establishing themselves on our border and thwart any attempts to form a terror corridor; we have exhausted every other means to achieve this. Moreover, as a result of the oppression of Arabs, Turkmens and Kurds in Afrin, many people have fled to our country. The return of the aforementioned people to their homes is also one of our aims in the operation.

The PKK and PYD have been attempting to infiltrate into Turkey through the Amanos Mountains. In addition, there are many incidents in which these terrorists have attempted terrorist attacks in Turkey. This being the case, Turkey has to achieve border security which will also allow refugees in our country to return to their homes.

Therefore, this operation targets terrorist organizations in the region and can never be defined as an invasion. Moreover, as it was the case in Operation Euphrates Shield, Turkey aims to cleanse the region from terrorist elements and wants life to return to normal in these cleansed territories. After Operation Euphrates Shield, Turkey left the control of the region to the local populace. Now, people are living in relative peace and comfort there. In this respect, we cannot accept any accusation of invasion. We advise those who accuse us of invading to look at their own histories.

Recently, President Erdoğan stated that the operation could expand to Manbij. Certain comments suggest that Turkey and the US might face each other there. What is your take on this issue?

The U.S. first promised not to allow the PYD into Manbij. Then, the U.S. allowed the PYD to move into Manbij, promising they would retreat. None of these promises were kept. We are not concerned about facing the U.S. there, as our main target is terrorist organizations like the PYD-YPG and Daesh.

President Erdoğan, who is also the commander-in-chief, has expressed clearly that the Syrian border will be cleansed of terrorist elements. Turkey will never allow a terrorist state near its borders and is determined to continue operations until all terrorist elements are cleansed. This might be Manbij or any other place that is occupied by terrorists.

Led jointly by Spain and Turkey, the UN Alliance of Civilizations is an initiative you are also responsible for. Could you inform us about the projects that are to take place throughout the year?

As you know, the U.N. Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) was initiated together with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who was the prime minister then and Spain's Prime Minister Zapatero; then, it was adopted by the U.N. and became a U.N. initiative.

The aim is to learn about other civilizations' histories, cultures, world views and ideals, while introducing Turkey's civilization to others. In this respect, it is a valuable initiative; the U.N. has appointed a full-time representative to it. Currently, 128 countries back this initiative.

We believe that UNAOC will contribute to world peace immensely through projects. However, this year we will focus on education, youth, media and immigration. Immigration is truly an important issue that needs social awareness. In addition, we continue to organize seminars and conferences; as we believe these are the keys to world peace and we will focus our attention on these kinds of events.

In this respect, what is your take on President Erdoğan's visit to the Vatican?

As you know, after the U.S. unilaterally recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, Pope Francis had expressed his concerns about this development and suggested a resolution that is similar to what Turkey has been advocating. In this respect, President Erdoğan's visit is important.

The visit to the Vatican will probably lead to discussion of different facets of the two civilizations. We could say there is currently a clash of civilizations; however, it is not between religions, but other aspects. One side of this conflict is an understanding of a civilization that aims to live and let live along with rejuvenate, while the other side justifies imperialism and uses proxies to kill to further its own interest.

In this respect, we need to counter any destructive understanding by embracing all human beings regardless of their religions, ethnicities and cultures, just because they are humans. This will make the world more livable and peaceful.

As a politician who was born in Western Thrace, the Turkish minority in Greece is of utmost importance to you. In this sense, could you evaluate the conditions of Turks in Western Thrace and Turkey's relations with Greece, especially over Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras's statement which defines Turkey as an 'aggressive neighbor?'

Greece is our neighbor and it is a fact. Therefore, we desire to develop our relations further with Greece and increase cooperation to improve the standards of living for both countries.

Indeed, during President Erdoğan's visits along with my own visits, we were able to work on various fields of cooperation. In the following days, we will hold a High Level Strategic Cooperation Council in Thessaloniki. Our aim is to improve cooperation and cohabitate with our neighbors. This has been a principle since Justice and Development Party's (AK Party) rise to power in 2002.

Meanwhile, we do not want anyone to feel ostracized or alienated; this being the purpose, we have done everything so that all minorities in Turkey could feel as equal citizens. We will continue to do whatever we can for them, as they are our citizens.

As you know, per the provisions of the Treaty of Lausanne, there is a Turkish minority in Western Thrace in exchange for the Greek minority in Istanbul. Turkey is doing all that it can to allow the Turkish minority in Greece to access all their rights.

We have assured certain rights regarding associations, houses of worship and education to minorities living in Turkey. However, we fail to see the same progress in Western Thrace towards the Muslim Turkish minority. This being the case, our compatriots there are asking us to communicate with the Greek state to assure their rights.

Western Thrace is the least developed region of Greece, along with the Balkans. Today, in Western Thrace, you cannot talk about a free ethnic or religious identity. Therefore, Greece has to shift its policies towards this particular region.

Greece became an EU member in 1980. In 1985, two associations in Western Thrace which had the word "Turkish" in it were closed down with the instruction of the mayor. Legal process was initiated and European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) found Greece unjust in its actions in 2008.

However, since 2008, Greece has been refraining from implementing the court decision and has yet to change laws which will allow these associations maintain their names. Considering how Turkey and Greece is treated by ECHR, you can see the double standard there.

In terms of associations, Greece is not allowing this Muslim Turkish minority to elect its own administration to associations. Similarly, this minority is unable to elect its own muftis; moreover, the Greek state tries to oppress the elected muftis through various court decisions.

Therefore, what we expect from Greece is the recognition of rights to this minority there which is assured by the international law. There are numerous infractions, especially in terms of education. Kindergarten has become mandatory in Greece and a child is not allowed into primary school if he/she does not have a kindergarten certificate.

The Muslim Turkish minority in Greece does not want their children to be educated according to Christian principles and become assimilated. These children are under the risk of being assimilated and becoming alienated to their own culture and language.

For this reason, this minority is demanding kindergartens to have bilingual education; however, the Greek government is against it. In addition, the people of Western Thrace were never allowed to benefit from the facilities provided by the EU. I believe Greece defining Turkey as an "aggressive neighbor" is an attempt to play the victim.
