Music: Rouben Karakhanian aka ‘Kemanche Rouben’. Forgotten Armenian Kemanchist Player

When ‘Kemanche Rouben’ visited Los Angeles in 1969 to play a concert, little did the young boy, Armen Arslanian realise that 50 years later he would be reminded of that childhood memory as part of the Armenian Heritage Project for Bangladesh.

Armen Arslanian

The Armenian Church Warden of Bangladesh vividly remembers Rouben visiting his family home:

“I was only around 9 or 10 years old, I remember him and that peculiar musical instrument. At that age you don’t really know or understand the meaning of such an experience but my parents ensured I listened to what he was playing. It is remarkable to think that in the 1930s he had visited the Armenian Church in Dhaka to play a concert for the local Armenian community. Now, I am Warden of that very church and through the generosity of our Heritage Project contributors, I find myself being reminded of a moment from my very early childhood time that I had no idea would connect me to my future responsibilities of the Armenian Church in Dhaka.”

Karakhanian was a native of Baku,  previously in Russia,  and learned to play the Kamanche at the age of six. His teacher was his grandfather, a Russian troubadour known as Sanan.

When Karakhanian was 10 years of age, he appeared in his first concert in Tiflis, for an audience that included a number of dignitaries.

The mayor of Tiflis praised the young musician to the last of the Russian Tzars, Nicholas II and Karakhanian appeared in St. Petersburg during the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Romanoff reign in Russia.

Karakhanian toured throughout the Middle East during the 1920s, giving concerts and composing music.  He married Azniv Manoogian, a pianist, and the pair gave concerts in Europe and Asia as well as the Middle East during the 1930s.

Mrs Karakhanian died during World War II, when Karakhanian was detained in Romania for 10 years.  He resumed his concert career after the war ended.

The Kamanche which Karakhanian played in his concerts was made in 1810 for his grandfather.  Its gourd shaped body and long neck were ornately trimmed with mother-of-pearl. The neck finial was shaped like the famed Byzantine “onion domes” of his native land.

The instrument is played with a bow, but unlike a violin is held neck-up. The body of the instrument supported on the knee. It produces a minor-key, wailing but melodic sound indicative of its Far Eastern origin.

Karakhanian once explained that most kamanches have only three strings, but he modified his own instrument so it can be played with piano accompaniment.

In 1935 Rouben was in India visiting the Armenian community there. Travelling through to Dhaka he found a most attentive audience, and a new friend in the young 22 year old Armenian, Ruben David. Rouben gave him two signed photographs that became treasured possessions of Ruben’s family, and we are delighted that the David family are sharing their family archive with the Heritage Project.

These two precious and rare images of Rouben Karakhanian are reproduced here.

YEREVAN. – A Zhamanak (Time) newspaper source close to the Russian border-protection service in Armenia has informed that, several days ago, Russian border guards arrested a border trespasser—whose citizenship was not determined—in Ararat Province, the newspaper reported.

“The latter claimed that he was a Georgian citizen, but an ethnic Azerbaijani. It is unknown as to for what objective he violated the border and ended up on the territory of Armenia,” Zhamanak wrote.

Azerbaijani Press: Russia Refuses to Sell "Bal" Missile System to Azerbaijan

Russia Refuses to Sell "Bal" Missile System to Azerbaijan

Moscow / 12/05/18 / Turan: The Kommersant newspaper reported on Moscow"s refusal to supply "Bal" missiles to Azerbaijan.

The military believe that this coastal missile system will pose a threat to Russian ships in the Caspian.

"Bal-E" is intended for control of territorial waters, protection of bases, coastal infrastructure and sea communications. The complex includes self-propelled command and control centers, self-propelled launchers with anti-ship missiles, transport and handling machines. The range of destruction is up to 120 km.

According to the publication, the parties had initialed a contract for the supply of a small batch of "Bal" missiles and several dozen 3M24 missiles (export version of the X-35E missiles). But the agreement was not signed finally. The calculations of the Russian side showed that even the export modification of these missiles could pose a potential threat to the ships of the Russian Navy in Russian territorial waters.

The Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation and Rosoboronexport declined to comment the matter.

According to a high-ranking source, the issue of "Bal" deliveries to the Azerbaijani military is not discussed also because of "a very delicate geopolitical nuance." Since in recent years the X-35 type rocket has been modernized for the destruction of earthly targets, Moscow does not want Baku to use these weapons in Nagorno-Karabakh, the source said.

ATP Continues to Make a Difference on the Landscape of Armenia, One Tree at a Time

ATP Continues to Make a Difference on the Landscape of Armenia, One Tree at a
Time

By Ani Melkonian

STEPANAVAN, Armenia--The deadly fires in California force us to think about our
forests and what we're doing to keep Armenia's precious natural resources safe.
Though the cause of the fires is still under investigation, initial evidence
points to manmade causes.

How safe are Armenia's forests? Let's just say that as long as there are
individuals anywhere in the world who don't believe that their action or
inaction can make a difference, nothing is ever safe.

While firefighting efforts may prove beneficial, too often wildfires in rural
areas are ignored and can be left burning for days in Armenia due to lack of
resources and infrastructure. Even the smallest fires cause huge damage as
Armenia has a forest cover of just 11 percent, according to official statistics.

That is why Armenia Tree Project (ATP) gives great importance to preventative
measures. On the education front, ATP is raising awareness and teaching young
Armenians across the country about forest fires prevention, especially in
targeted areas like Lori, Kotayk, Shirak, Tavush, and Gegharkunik.

Tchalo, the firefighting gampr shepherd dog who is the face of ATP's campaign,
is actively involved in the process through an animated PSA and educational
posters (visit www.tinyurl.com/tchalo to view the PSA).

Miles from California on the outskirts of Stepanavan, 19-year-old Angela
Mkrtchyan is planting trees in ATP's afforestation plot with her mother and
older brother. For the next 11 days, the Mkrtchyan family's livelihood will
depend on the little seedlings of ash, apple, beech, maple, oak, and pear
trees. ATP hires more than 150 workers each year to help with planting and
maintenance.

It's a short-term job but for the Mkrtchyan family, who have no permanent work,
it is vital. It is Angela's second season with ATP but her family has been part
of the planting brigade for the past four years.

"Many things we do in our daily lives have a negative impact on the environment
and on the lives of future generations. Planting trees is one of the few things
the next generations will thank us for, so I'm happy to be doing it," says
Angela.

Angela is planting close to 200 saplings each day. By the end of the 11-day
journey she will earn about $180, which is slightly over the average monthly
salary in rural Armenia.

"Our cause becomes theirs. During this time they form a special relationship
with the forest, and so they encourage others to preserve and protect it as
well," says ATP Forester Vahe Martirosyan.

Similarly, over 40 men and women, young and old are working in Tashir on ATP's
forestry plots and on a joint forestry project with GIZ in Aparan, Arayi, and
Vardenut.

In total, ATP has planted another 187,845 trees this fall, bringing the total
for 2018 to 257,910 trees. The overall total of trees planted in Armenia and
Artsakh since 1994 is 5,722,562.

"We're proud of our results, of our positive impact on the land and the
livelihoods we are helping to improve," explains Executive Director Jeanmarie
Papelian. "Many of the trees we planted this year are fruit trees, or 6,640 to
be exact. And the total harvest from ATP's trees was more than 1,600,000 pounds
of fruit this year, which was distributed in the communities all for the
benefit of local people."

Two hundred families in Lori's Ghursali Village received coppiced wood for the
winter from ATP. The wood comes from a project done in the village on 10
hectares with HayAntar. Locals were hired and trained to cut tree stems which
grow close together or from one stump to near ground level so the trees may
grow to their full potential and thrive.

"To get 5.7 million trees planted, ATP needed a lot of helping hands from
people like Angela and her family. The organization's soon-to-be 25 year
history shows us that not only are trees indispensable to our wellbeing but
that there are ways you can afford a living through them as well," adds
Papelian.

"Today, more than ever, there is a renewed opportunity to create an Armenia
where the people and the environment can coexist in harmony. ATP's work to help
create an Armenia that is clean and green, with a healthy respect for people
and the planet, continues stronger than ever as Armenia maps out its new
future," concludes Papelian.

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 27, ARMENPRESS. The NK conflict will be settled the way the people will want it, caretaker Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during a campaigning rally of his My Step bloc in the town of Stepanavan.

Pashinyan made the comment in response to Republican candidate for parliament Davit Shahnazaryan’s statement.

“I am the first Armenian leader to have said the following: no Armenian leader or government can solve the Karabakh issue because it is the people that should solve it. If a settlement offer will exist that in my opinion will be acceptable, I will discuss this offer with the people,” Pashinyan said.

Pashinyan noted that only the government of Artsakh can present the stance of Artsakh in the NK conflict settlement.

“Only the Karabakh government can present the Karabakh stance in the NK issue, me and other leaders of Armenia can only negotiate on behalf of Armenia. I have invited the Artsakh government, the entire command of the military, representatives of the political elite and I have presented all circumstances of the negotiations process that exists up to this point with all its detail. The more people possess the Karabakh issue negotiations process, the better, because there can’t be secrets for the military, the diplomats, and, taking into consideration certain nuances, also the people. This kind of a meeting didn’t take place in the past,” Pashinyan said.

Pashinyan also addressed the questions about going for concessions.

“I have publicly said several times that it is unacceptable when international representatives come and ask – is Armenia ready for concessions? I have said that Armenia will answer this question when the international community will ask this same question to Azerbaijan,” Pashinyan said.

Earlier, HHK’s Davit Shahnazaryan said that Pashinyan and his government pose a greater danger for Artsakh than the Azerbaijani military.

The celebration of the 98th anniversary of the Sovietization of Armenia grew into a scuffle between Armenian communists and supporters of the European integration of Armenia

Yerevan November 29

Marianna Mkrtchyan. The celebration of the 98th anniversary of the Sovietization of Armenia developed into a scuffle between Armenian Communists and supporters of European integration of Armenia. So, today, members of the Communist Party of Armenia, together with representatives of the United Progressive Communist Party of Armenia and the Socialist Way Party, traditionally decided to celebrate the Sovietization Day of Armenia. However, the event was overshadowed by the actions of supporters of European integration, led by Co-Chairman of the European Party of Armenia Tigran Khzmalian. After the ceremony of laying flowers by the Communists to the monumentChairman of the Baku Commune, Stepan Shahumyan, locatednear the Republic Square, as well as to the two memorials of soldiersRed Army, they were approached by supporters of European integration inled by Hazmalian, who were accompanied by the police.Supporters of European integration came with banners calling for the withdrawal of the 102nd Russian military base from the territory of Armenia, and there were also inscriptions on the banners that "the Red Army did not liberate, but occupied Armenia."These actions of Khzmlyan's associates caused a negative reaction from the communists. A scuffle occurred between the two forces, the latter were already separated by the police.

However, the incident did not exhaust itself, the "capitulation" pro-European forces, who had suffered defeat from the communists, decided to march to the Russian embassy and pass a note of protest in connection with the anniversary of the "occupation", but no one came to them. The communists also did not stop at the "victory" and pursued the participants of the pro-European procession led by Khzmlyan to the Russian embassy. Kocharyan files peremptory challenge against judge

Category
Politics

Former President Robert Kocharyan’s attorney Hayk Alumyan argues that the judge presiding over the court hearing of the complaint filed against the 2nd President’s earlier release from pre-trial detention has been selected unlawfully.

“We were notified that a draw took place in the Court of Appeals, during which the judge for the case for selected. The law doesn’t envisage a draw, as such,” he told reporters outside the courtroom.

“We requested for the judge to present us the record of this draw. Under the legislation,  any action within the framework of a criminal case must be sealed materially. An action cannot be done without being recorded anywhere. The judge said that this kind of a record doesn’t exist. He presented another clarification, by saying that a draw took place, but that he doesn’t know if the president of the court took into consideration the result of the draw or any other standard when tasking him the case,” Alumyan said.

Alumyan says that this argument of the judge caused greater uncertainty for them.

He said they’ve requested the acting president of the court to provide them with the record. They’ve also requested to be provided with the standards that have been applied while selecting this particular judge.

“The acting president of the court wrote that a draw has taken place but that there is no record. In addition, he wrote that the judge was chosen randomly, and based on the workload of judges. According to paragraph 1, article 6 of the European Convention [Human Rights], anyone is entitled to a trial by a tribunal established by law. In any case, when the composition of the court is created, it must be done based on law. And we showed the court that the procedure that has been used in the given case doesn’t exist in law,” Alumyan said.

He said that the prosecution was neutral on the issue, and the examiner said that this judge shouldn’t examine the case.

“If the case has started with breach of law, we don’t expect the outcome to be lawful. We decided to file a peremptory challenge against the judge. We want the case to be tried by the composition that will be selected in accordance with law,” Alumyan said.

The decision about the motion of the challenge will be published today at 17:00.
