Influential US newspaper “The Daily Caller” published an article by Azerbaijan’s Consul General in Los Angeles Nasimi Aghayev on Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict on , Azerbaijani Consulate General in Los Angeles said in a message.

Referring to the upcoming visit by U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton to the South Caucasus, Consul General notes that Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict will be one of the most important topics to be discussed during the visit.

Highlighting the history of the conflict, Aghayev writes: “In the early 1990s, Armenia invaded around 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s sovereign territory, expelling over 800,000 Azerbaijani civilians from their ancestral lands in the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. For the sake of comparison, the entire territory of the invaded lands is almost 13 times the area of the City of Los Angeles or larger than the U.S. State of Connecticut.”

He further mentions that “the illegal military occupation continues to this day despite fierce condemnation by multiple United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, as well as by other major international organizations. The real obstacle to resolving the conflict and bringing the much-needed peace to Armenian and Azerbaijani people remains unchanged: Armenia’s refusal to comply with UNSC resolutions by withdrawing its troops from the illegally occupied territories of Azerbaijan and enabling the expelled population of these territories to return to their homes”.

Citing the U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Richard Mills’s recent interview to the Armenian press, the Consul General states that “any settlement of the conflict requires the return of the occupied territories to Azerbaijan”.

Nasimi Aghayev writes: “Armenia is experiencing a grave demographic decline. Tens of thousands of young people, lacking opportunities at home, are emigrating from the country in search of a better life. In contrast, Azerbaijan has become the largest economy in the region, building strong partnerships around the world, implementing multi-billion dollar energy and transportation projects connecting continents, and contributing to the global energy security”.

The Consul General underlines that the peace with Azerbaijan “would tremendously benefit Armenia by bringing open borders, security and stability, stimulating investments, and integrating Armenia into the region’s vast energy and transportation network.” He states that to achieve peace Armenia must put aside belligerence and engage constructively in negotiations.

In conclusion, Consul General Aghayev notes: “It is to be hoped that as a co-mediator with much at stake in the region, the United States will double its efforts in helping both sides achieve lasting peace and reconciliation”.

Asbarez: ANCA-WR Endorses Newsom for California Governor

ANCA-WR Board, Advisory Board and ANCA National Board members with gubernatorial candidate Gavin Newsom

GLENDALE—The Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region this week announced its endorsement of Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom for California Governor during the general election on November 6.

“After several substantive discussions with Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom throughout the past year, the ANCA-Western Region Board of Directors was unanimous in its decision to endorse him as the next Governor of California. He has a solid understanding of issues that are important to the Armenian-American community, and we are confident that as Governor, he will maintain open lines of communication and will positively address the needs of our community and of California’s residents overall,” stated Nora Hovsepian, Chair of the ANCA-WR.

Lieutenant Governor Newsom has had a long history with the Armenian-American community in his native San Francisco, and has been a strong supporter of its issues beginning with his days as a San Francisco Supervisor, then as Mayor of the City following his election in 2003, and as Lieutenant Governor for the past eight years.

The announcement of his endorsement was made following a September fundraiser for Newsom where he met with representatives of the ANCA-WR in Southern California. The ANCA-WR had also endorsed Newsom during the primaries following a meeting in May where Newsom expressed encouragement regarding the recent peaceful transition in the Armenian government, stating “The response to the populist call for reform and greater democracy and transparency is to be congratulated, and among the many positive consequences is the prospect that it could help promote increased trade and interaction between the State of California, Armenia and Artsakh.”

Lt. Governor Newson has been a staunch supporter of the Divest Turkey campaign, with most recently calling for divestment at the University of California and CalPERS at the April 24 March for Justice.

Whether on the issue of justice for the Armenian Genocide, or other issues of importance to the Armenian-American community, Newsom has never forsaken his principles, and always stood firmly in support of human rights and justice for crimes against humanity.

Newsom was appointed to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1997, representing District 2. He was first elected Mayor of San Francisco in 2003 and was reelected to a second term in 2007. The ANCA-WR endorsed Gavin Newsom based on his long and faithful record of public service and his steadfast support of issues of concern to Armenian-Americans. Ever since his tenure on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Newsom has held an open-door policy toward his constituents, carrying their message to City Hall.

As supervisor, Newsom supported the sale of the Mount Davidson Cross to the Council of Armenian-American Organizations of Northern California who preserved the landmark and installed a bronze plaque at the base honoring the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

The Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region is the largest and most influential Armenian-American grassroots advocacy organization in the Western United States. Working in coordination with a network of offices, chapters, and supporters throughout the Western United States and affiliated organizations around the country, the ANCA-WR advances the concerns of the Armenian-American community on a broad range of issues.

Erdogan Says Opening of Border With Armenia Impossible Until Nagorno-Karabakh Settlement

BAKU, September 15 (Sputnik) – The opening of the border between Turkey and Armenia and the establishment of diplomatic ties remain out of question until the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is settled, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday.

"Without the settlement of the conflict, without the return of refugees to their homes, talks on opening borders and establishing any relations are out of question," Erdogan said, speaking at the Azerbaijani military parade marking the centenary of the victory of the Caucasian Islamic Army, who fought on behalf of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic and captured Baku from Armenian Dashnaks and Bolshevik forces.

The statement comes as Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hikmat Hajiyev earlier in the day accused Armenia of shelling several areas controlled by the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, citing the data of the country’s defense ministry.

In a comment to Sputnik, the diplomat stressed that Baku would resist attempts to drag out the conflict settlement and warned that "the responsibility for the steps that Azerbaijan could have to take, applying its inalienable rights on the basis of the UN Charter, will entirely rest with Armenia."

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict dates back to 1988, when the Armenian-dominated Nagorno-Karabakh region, which was then part of the Azerbaijan Socialist Republic, announced its willingness to secede and join the Armenian republic instead. The military conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan erupted after the region proclaimed its independence and the creation of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic in 1991.

In 1994 a ceasefire agreement was reached, however, in 2016 the two sides renewed clashes leading to numerous casualties on both sides.
