YEREVAN, JULY 4, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan sent a congratulatory message to U.S. President Donald Trump on the occasion of U.S. Independence Day. As ARMENPRESS was informed from the Office of the Prime Minister of Armenia, the message runs as follows:

“Honorable Mr. President,

I extend my warmest congratulations to you and to the friendly people of the United States on Independence Day.

The meaning of July 4 reverberates far beyond the borders of the United States and has become a symbol of victorious struggle for independence. The founding fathers’ noble ideas of state-building have ever since been a source of inspiration for many nations in pursuit of democracy

For two years now, the Armenian authorities have embarked on a comprehensive institutional reform agenda, supposed to lead to the final establishment and irreversibility of democracy and the rule of law in our country. The fight against corruption and judicial reform stands high on our agenda.

We are grateful for the United States’ financial and technical assistance for democratic reforms in Armenia. We highly appreciate the support provided by your administration in the fight against the pandemic that has been plaguing the globe for a while now.

Armenia highly values the furtherance of friendly relations with the United States as part of the strategic dialogue established a year ago. We are committed to continued participation in the U.S.-led initiatives aimed at fighting cross-border terrorism and enhancing international security to the best of our ability. We appreciate the United States’ constructive involvement and balanced policy in the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the First Republic of Armenia and the United States. This landmark historical fact gives our partnership a truly emotional touch. Resonating with our shared democratic values, it creates a solid groundwork for continued development and progress of friendship between our two nations.

Reiterating my congratulations, I wish the friendly people of America peace, prosperity and a swift victory in the fight against the coronavirus-driven pandemic.”

U.S. to work with Turkey on F-35 parts until 2022, state media citing
Pentagon says

July 1, 2020

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - The United States will continue working with
Turkish companies producing some parts of F-35 fighter jets until
2022, Turkey’s state-owned Anadolu agency quoted a Pentagon
spokeswoman as saying on Wednesday.

Turkey said in May it was still producing and delivering parts for the
stealth jets despite being suspended from the programme nearly a year
ago over its purchase of Russian S-400 anti-aircraft defence systems.

Turkey was both a parts manufacturer and major buyer of the Lockheed
Martin F-35s. Washington says the S-400s jeopardise the jets - which
Ankara denies - and are incompatible with NATO defence systems.

Anadolu quoted Pentagon spokeswoman Jessica Maxwell as saying the
Turkish companies would continue to produce 139 components of the jets
until 2022. “Our industry partners will carry out the continuing
contracts,” she said, adding the Pentagon was still looking for
alternatives to Turkey.

The Pentagon was not immediately available to comment.

Washington announced last July - when the first Russian S-400 units
arrived in Turkey - that it was suspending Ankara from the F-35
programme and expected to “wind down” Turkey’s involvement by March
2020.

The United States also said the purchase meant Turkey could be
subjected to sanctions under U.S. legislation aimed at discouraging
defence purchases from Moscow.

Asbarez: ABMDR Facilitates Life-Saving Stem Cell Harvesting Procedure In Yerevan Despite Pandemic

A scene from the stem cell harvesting procedure.

LOS ANGELES—Despite the ongoing worldwide lockdown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and despite unprecedented obstacles to the delivery of critically-needed healthcare, the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry performed its 35th stem cell harvesting procedure in Yerevan on June 23, to facilitate a life-saving transplant for an Armenian patient in Germany.

Ever since the World Health Organization announced the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, the Republic of Armenia, like any other country, has gone into a nationwide lockdown, in an effort to stop the spread of the virus. During this time, hospitals were instructed to postpone or delay all non-life-threatening procedures, including treatments for certain cancer patients.

COVID-19 made the situation of cancer patients even worse, due to the danger of severe health complications in case of an infection. Ironically, a state of isolation or lockdown, including the practices of wearing masks and social distancing, is not unfamiliar to cancer patients, who, because of their chemotherapy and radiation treatments, must adhere to those restrictions in the course of their “normal” lives.

“The restrictions necessitated by the pandemic make one appreciate more the hardships and isolation that most cancer patients must go through in their daily lives,” said Dr. Frieda Jordan, President of ABMDR. “As a registry, we felt that although most other registries throughout the world have stopped their services in terms of donor search, we had to continue our life-saving work, and to continue to be a beacon of hope for patients whose last hope of survival is to have a matched donor for a stem-cell transplant.”

“We appreciate the fact that finding a matched donor is very difficult,” Dr. Jordan said. “We want our patients to know that they are not forgotten, that they can rely on us, and have their stem cell transplant once hospitals resume their activities after the lockdown.”

ABMDR’s 35th stem cell harvesting procedure on June 23 took place at the registry’s Stem Cell Harvesting Center in Yerevan. The stem cells were donated by a young Yerevan resident for a chance to save the life of her brother in Germany.

“Extraordinary efforts were required, in Armenia and Germany alike, for the seamless performance of the harvesting procedure in Yerevan, and the same-day delivery of the harvested stem cells to Germany through a special international courier,” said Dr. Sevak Avagyan, ABMDR’s Executive Director. “Everything had to be implemented like clockwork, including obtaining all emergency permits from the Ministry of Health and the Pandemic Emergency Committee. Every second counted!”

Dr. Avagyan thanked in particular the Health Ministry of Armenia, various government agencies, and Belavia Airlines for the smooth implementation of the entire process.

Dr. Jordan said that despite the extraordinary circumstances of the past several months, ABMDR has continued to perform all tests for patients in Armenia and worldwide, proceeded to collect cord blood samples, and, above all, identified and facilitated the registry’s 35th harvest.

Dr. Jordan added that ABMDR has taken one big step further during this period, by applying its scientific resources and knowledge for a major research project that seeks to understand the relationship between COVID-19 and genetics, as manifested in an Armenian population sample. “Our hope is to draw a conclusion on the correlation of individual HLA profiles and susceptibility to the disease,” Dr. Jordan said and concluded, “Our research paper is progressing, and we hope it will be presented at all international scientific forums soon!”

Established in 1999, ABMDR, a nonprofit organization, helps Armenians and non-Armenians worldwide survive life-threatening blood-related illnesses by recruiting and matching donors to those requiring bone marrow stem cell transplants. To date, the registry has recruited over 32,000 donors in 33 countries across four continents, identified over 9,000 patients, and facilitated 35 bone marrow transplants. In a speech to Germany's parliament, Merkel said it was crucial that EU states act in solidarity to survive the economic damage caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

"The pandemic has revealed how fragile the European project still is," said the chancellor. "Cohesion and solidarity have never been as important as they are today."

Prosperous Armenia Party leader exits court, trial to continue tomorrow

News.am, Armenia

23:18, 18.06.2020

A short while ago, leader of Prosperous Armenia Party Gagik Tsarukyan exited the Yerevan court of general jurisdiction in Shengavit Administrative District and told reporters that the trial has been postponed.

“The court hasn’t made a decision yet. The trial will continue tomorrow at 10:30,” he said.

Asked for his comment on other criminal cases related to him and stated in the press release issued by the National Security Service, Tsarukyan said those cases are also phony.

“This is a politically motivated case and is linked to the statement that I made about the state of the country and the economic situation on June 5,” Tsarukyan said.

The Armenian parliament has voted to lift the parliamentary immunity of opposition leader Gagik Tsarukyan, leading the way for his prosecution. Supporters of Tsarukyan, who leads the Prosperous Armenia Party have taken to blocking the streets of Yerevan.

Tsarukyan, one of the richest men in Armenia, is under investigation for vote-buying, illegal business practices, and organising a fraudulent land transfer scheme.

Speaking in parliament on Tuesday, the prosecutor general of Armenia appealed for MPs to ‘end Gagik Tsarukyan’s immunity, so there can be a full and objective investigation’.

In two votes on Tuesday, parliament approved motions to strip him of his parliamentary immunity leading the way for his arrest. Both opposition parties with seats in the Armenian parliament, Tsarukyan’s Prosperous Armenia and the liberal opposition Bright Armenia Party, boycotted the votes.

Bright Armenia stated that despite their misgivings about Prosperous Armenia, they believed the decision was politically motivated, a charge the authorities have denied.

Before the motion was voted on, Tsarukyan insisted that he was innocent of the charges levied against him and that, as a politician, he only had the interests of Armenia at heart.

‘Let no one say I’m doing this for personal gain or personal dividends’, he said.

Outside of parliament, scores of Tsarukyan supporters were arrested for protesting the move. In other parts of Yerevan, several lorries belonging to Multi Group, a company owned by Tsarukyan, were turned into impromptu roadblocks. Bystanders were seen on camera pushing the lorries out of the streets shortly thereafter.

According to Armenia’s Prosecutor General, Tsarukyan organised vote bribing ahead of the 2017 parliamentary elections paying out ֏170 million ($360,000) to over 17,000 voters in Gegharkunik Province.

Prosecutors have also accused him of engaging in $62 million worth of illegal business practices through his casinos and orchestrating a fraudulent land transfer scheme costing the state $800,000.

Tsarukyan’s house was raided by the National Security Service (NSS) on the morning of 14 June and he was taken in for questioning for over 10 hours.

The houses of several other MPs from Tsarukyan’s Prosperous Armenia party were also searched.

The search came a week after Tsarukyan made a speech at the party’s Political Council in which he stated that the government had failed on all fronts — from domestic affairs to the economy, from negotiations around the status of Nagorno-Karabakh to its fight against the spread of COVID-19 in the country. Tsarukyan claimed the government should resign.

Mane Gevorgyan, spokesperson to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, shot back with a statement accusing Tsarukyan of trying to turn attention away from his criminal activity.

Soon after, court papers from a 1979 criminal case against Tsarukyan were leaked to the media.

They appear to show that Tsarukyan, along with several others, was convicted for the rape and robbery of two tourists. The verdict was overturned in 2001 following an appeal by Tsarukyan.

After the leak, Tsarukyan’s lawyers filed a case with the General Prosecutor’s office claiming that by leaking the 41-year-old case, Tsarukyan’s right to privacy was violated.

Tsarukyan is one of the wealthiest men in Armenian politics. Having begun his business career in food processing during the 1990s, over three decades he has amassed a stake in a wide variety of industries throughout Armenia, including alcohol and food production, casinos, hotels, mineral extraction, pharmaceuticals, and most recently, bitcoin mining.

He has also had a large influence over sporting in Armenia, financially supporting a large number of athletes, sports centres, and serving as the head of the Armenian Olympic Committee since 2005.

Tsarukyan has also had a successful if tumultuous career in politics.

In their first major electoral outing, his Prosperous Armenia party gathered 15% of the vote in the 2007 parliamentary elections, entering parliament as a junior coalition partner of the ruling Republican Party. In 2012, the party doubled its vote share to 30%.

Tsarukyan’s political career suffered a hiccup when he publicly split with then-President Serzh Sargsyan in the aftermath of the 2012 election and left the ruling coalition.

In 2015, he called for Sargsyan’s resignation and threatened to bring his supporters into the streets. Sargsyan, in turn, accused the oligarch of ‘stealing millions’ and removed him from the National Security Council.

Before the conflict could escalate, Tsarukyan and Sargsyan reconciled in a meeting supposedly mediated by then-Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan, who is Tsarukyan’s son-in-law, as well as Russian-Armenian billionaire Samvel Karapetyan.

Following the meeting, Tsarukyan announced that he was leaving politics, and resigning from his position as an MP and head of his own party. In the autumn of 2015,  he was awarded a medal by Sargsyan for ‘services done for his country.’

Tsarukyan returned to politics in February 2017. His return also coincided with a push towards making international connections, as he feted a number of prominent eurosceptic politicians from abroad such the British former MEP Daniel Hannan, and former MP James Wharton.

He was one of the few oligarchs and major politicians with ties to the pre-revolutionary government who had previously remained untouched by the 2018 Velvet Revolution.

Pashinyan receives unfavorable signal from European Parliament on Karabakh

Vestnik Kavkaza
12 Jun in 14:47

Adopted yesterday joint statement of the European Parliament (EP) rapporteurs on Azerbaijan and Armenia, condemning the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia and calling on the parties to show readiness for a peaceful settlement of the conflict within the framework of the internationally recognized borders of Azerbaijan, is, in any case, an unfavorable signal for the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, a leading analyst at the Agency for Political and Economic Communications, Mikhail Neyzhmakov told Vestnik Kavkaza.

“You can recall that one of the co-authors of the statement, Basescu, as president of Romania, interacted quite actively with Baku. At the same time, Zovko and Kaljurand are politicians quite cautious, with significant diplomatic experience. It is unlikely that they acted at their own risk, "the expert drew attention.

Further, the political scientist did not rule out that such a cold attitude of the European deputies to Yerevan is connected not only with the EU policy in the South Caucasus, but also with the EU-Turkey relations. "Despite the tension between Ankara and Brussels, for example, on the issue of exploration near Cyprus, the parties are clearly looking for interaction. Recall the statement made by European Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi in early June 2020 that Turkey is among the states that will receive funding from the EU budget in 2021-2027. The statement of the three European parliamentarians on the Karabakh issue, which offends the interests of Yerevan, can clearly get approval from Ankara, while for the EU leadership it costs nothing," he said.

In any case, according to the analyst, the adoption of this statement is not a very favorable signal for Pashinyan, because the Armenian Prime Minister sought to prove to the domestic audience that the trust between Yerevan and the European Union has been strengthened over the past two years. "Pashinyan’s opponents (for example, Karen Bekaryan, a deputy of the National Assembly of Armenia of the two previous convocations) have already called this statement of the European parliament a failure of parliamentary diplomacy, "Mikhail Neyzhmakov explained.
