CIVILNET.Armenian National Football Team Gets New Head Coach, Amid Doubts on His Fitness

On March 10, the Football Federation of Armenia issued a statement announcing the appointment of Joaquín Caparrós as the head coach of the Armenian national football team. Caparrós, who previously managed numerous Spanish clubs, including Athletic Bilbao and Sevilla, is set to lead the Armenian national team through November 2021, the end date of the qualification process for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. According to the Spanish press, Ginés Meléndez, the Armenian Football Federation’s technical director, is thought to have played a key role in recruiting a fellow Spaniard for the position.

Following the announcement, Armenian media groups have focused extensively on Caparrós’ diagnosis of chronic leukemia, which he revealed publicly last April. Chronic leukemia is a form of blood cancer that typically progresses slowly and does not always require immediate treatment. Though Russian football commentator Konstantin Genich has stated that Caparrós “would not have signed the contract…if doctors did not give him the go-ahead”, numerous other commentators have questioned Caparrós’ ability to lead the Armenian national team given his diagnosis.

Caparrós is the Armenian national team’s third head coach appointed in the past year. The team’s previous coach, Abram Khashmanyan, resigned in February after only three months in the position. The Armenian national team is placed 102 in the FIFA world rankings and has lost each of its three last matches. Most notably, the Armenian national team suffered a crushing 9-1 defeat to Italy last November.

Armenian football teams struggle with their overall economic viability. For instance, it has been estimated that in 2018-2019, the revenue received by Armenia’s major clubs covered only 15-20 percent of their expenses. In nearly all cases, the shortfall has been covered by entrepreneurs from Armenia and the Armenian community in Russia. Nevertheless, the mere fact that entrepreneurs knowingly invest in Armenian football teams at a loss speaks to the economic hardships faced by Armenian clubs.

CivilNet’s Tatul Hakobyan argues that the Armenian government can and should support the country’s football clubs in parallel with private investors by, for instance, allocating financial support to football teams in a separate line in the state budget.

Current Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made a comment last August that he envisages the Armenian national team winning a medal in either the European Championship or World Cup by 2050. However, Pashinyan’s administration has as yet made no proposals or efforts to establish state support for Armenian football clubs.

YEREVAN, MARCH 4, ARMENPRESS. The policy of Ankara on unconditional support for Azerbaijan not only contradicts the status of Turkey as a member of the OSCE Minsk Group, but also undermines the efforts of the international mediators aimed at the final settlement of the Azerbaijan-Karabakh conflict, reads the comment of the Foreign Ministry of Artsakh, reports ARMENPRESS.

ARMENPRESS reports to the question how would you comment on the statement by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu voiced during the meeting with the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairmen, Arrtsakh's Foreign Ministry answered,

Turkey is not impartial on the Azerbaijan-Karabakh conflict and cannot play any positive role. It is a fact that Turkey is an ally of Azerbaijan: since 1988, the beginning of the Karabakh Movement and throughout the Azerbaijan-Karabakh conflict, Turkey has supported Azerbaijan. Moreover, in April 2016, Turkey openly supported Azerbaijan's military aggression unleashed against Artsakh, despite the calls by the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairmen and, in general, the international community to immediately cease the hostilities. The policy of Ankara on unconditional support for Azerbaijan not only contradicts the status of Turkey as a member of the OSCE Minsk Group, but also undermines the efforts of the international mediators aimed at the final settlement of the Azerbaijan-Karabakh conflict.

Armenia is a landlocked country in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia. It is a small market with positive economic growth prospects. The structural reforms and sound macroeconomic policy in the country enable it to maintain low inflation and attract foreign investments.

The rise in purchasing power parity (PPP) of Armenian consumers has generated a positive impact on the consumption of consumer goods. Armenia's annual household income per capita reached $ 1,516.748 in December 2018 from $ 1,453.618 in Dec 2017. Shoppers in Armenia spend almost $ 100 million monthly on consumer goods, primarily on food and food products. In addition, the demand for convenience goods has gained high traction in recent past. Rise in internet penetration, denser urban population, fast pace lifestyles, and challenging working hours are deepening the complexity of consumer lives. Consumers are constantly opting for products which provide efficiency and are time saving. These factors cumulatively generate a positive impact on the growth of consumer goods market in Armenia.
However, Armenia faces geopolitical issues with its neighboring countries. All the goods traded with Armenia have to pass through Georgia. During this process, high transport tariffs are levied, which ultimately increases the end price of the product. Hence, the presence of trade barriers cause hinderance in the growth of the Armenian consumer goods market.

Belarus diplomat says Azerbaijan’s membership to CSTO may promote Karabakh conflict settlement

Aysor, Armenia
Feb 27 2020

Belarus’ ambassador to Armenia Igor Nazaruk is not against Azerbaijan’s membership to the CSTO if to take into consideration the experience of the Soviet Union.

“I want to mention the experience of the Soviet Union. We all were different, remember the Baltic republics and Middle Asian republics. I want to note that in this multinational family there were no territorial demands, international and religious conflicts, thus such trend would have been a right thing,” he said at the Role of the CSTO in Ensuring Security in Caucasian Region round table discussion.

He said the entrance of Azerbaijan to the CSTO will probably promote the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement.

Director of CSTO Institute Nver Torosyan stressed that the opinion that Azerbaijan’s entrance to the CSTO may promote settlement of the conflict is non-professional opinion.

Asbarez: ACF to Honor Hovsep and Elizabeth Boyadjian at Annual Gala

Elizabeth and Hovsep Boyadjian

The Board of Directors of the Armenian Cultural Foundation announced this week that long-time community activists and benefactors Hovsep and Elizabeth Boyadjian will be honored at the organization’s annual gala. This year, the gala will be held on Sunday, March 1 at the Montage Beverly Hills, located at 225 N Canon Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90210.

The Boyadjian’s storied activism and philanthropy spans decades in the Western Region community and extends to Armenia and Artsakh, as well as Antelias, Lebanon, the seat of the Holy See of Cilicia.

In October, His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia announced the completion of months-long renovation efforts at Antelias’ St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral and the Catholicosate’s headquarters, made possible through the generosity of Hovsep and Elizabeth Boyadjian.

“Throughout the years, Hovsep and Elizabeth Boyadjian’s contributions to the advancement of ACF’s mission have been tremendous,” said ACF Chairman Avedik Izmirlian. “Together, the Boyadjians have had indelible impact on the ACF and we are proud to honor them.”

Hovsep Boyadjian has been active in several community organizations and institutions and has volunteered his time and services for many years. Notably, he was a member of the construction committees of the Western Prelacy and the St. Sarkis Church in Pasadena, of which he was the chair.

An active member of the Pasadena community, Hovsep Boyadjian has served on the Board of Trustees of the St. Sarkis Church and was elected to represent the church as a delegate to National Representative Assembly of the Western Prelacy.

Elizabeth Boyadjian currently serves as the secretary of the Western Prelacy Executive Council. In 2017, she represented the Prelacy at the World National Representative Assembly in Antelias.

She has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Armenian Cultural Foundation and the Armenian National Committee of America – Western Region, and has chaired the latter’s annual gala.

For the past decade, Elizabeth Boyadjian has been a driving force behind the success of the ACF’s annual galas, which have become a centerpiece event for the California Armenian-American community, raising tens of thousands of dollars to advance the ACF’s mission of contributing and strengthening educational and cultural institutions here, as well as in Armenia, Artsakh and Javakhk.

Throughout the years, the couple has contributed to the Western Prelacy, the ACF, the ANCA-WR, as well as school construction projects in Artakh. Hovsep and Elizabeth Boyadjian served as the Honorary President of Homenetmen’s 2006 Navasartian Games.
