A1+: Zohrab Mnatsakanyan: The status and security of Artsakh remain the most urgent issues for Armenia. (video)

During a conversation with journalists in Yerablur, Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan highlighted the creation of favorable conditions for peace in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“We have not deviated from our position regarding exclusively peaceful settlement within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairmen. The most important thing we have said is that the status and security of Artsakh remain the most urgent issues for Armenia. The talks are about it.”

According to the observation about what kind of steps have been taken after the change of power to involve Artsakh in the negotiations, Zohrab Mnatsakanyan noted that Armenia cannot take all the obligations without Artsakh.

“This is a practical issue, if everything does not happen at once, that does not mean we have forgotten it.”

“We will maintain peace. The primary issue is the status and security,” emphasized Zohrab Mnatsakanyan.

Letter to the Editor of The Washington Post: The real discontent is in Armenia, not Azerbaijan

Letters to the Editor

Regarding the Jan. 22 editorial “Do not forget the Azerbaijan 128”:

An interesting lesson from the recent history of our region is that while Azerbaijan has been a target of persistent and excessive criticism, it was in neighboring Armenia that the real popular discontent was brewing against the militaristic government. Yet, so fixated many pundits remained with Azerbaijan that discontent in Armenia, which led to an abrupt regime change, was conveniently ignored for years by most Western observers.

As for the case of blogger Mehman Huseynov: He is not on a hunger strike, as he himself stated and several European officials, who met him very recently, testified to. Nor is there any evidence of other detainees holding a hunger strike, either. Mr. Huseynov just personally appealed to President Ilham Aliyev for a thorough investigation of any incidents in detention. All criminal proceedings against Mr. Huseynov have been ceased.

Arsenal has noted on its official website that Henrikh Mkhitaryan is gradually making a recovery.

The Armenian midfielder has been training with the team in light sessions and is expected to return to action in February.

Meanwhile, the English press continues claiming that Mkhitaryan won’t stay with Arsenal till the end of his contract in 2021.

Unai Emery said yesterday that club is working on signing Denis Suarez, but he could not give concrete information. The media believe that Mkhitaryan’s future at Arsenal depends on that transfer and report that even if the Armenian footballer stays at Arsenal in the January transfer window, he will definitely move to Milan or Everton in summer.

The United States Senate has confirmed President Donald Trump's nominee Lynne Tracy to serve as the country’s ambassador to Armenia, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) said on Facebook.

“I support this nomination, but expect to work closely with Ms. Tracy on how she will encourage an honest acknowledgement of the Armenian Genocide,” ANCA quoted Senator Bob Menendez as saying.

In a statement before the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs earlier in December, Lynne Tracy stressed the key purpose of the U.S. policies in Armenia is to strengthen the country’s independent statehood.

“The overall goal of our Armenia policy remains an independent, democratic, and prosperous Armenia, at peace with its neighbors. Situated astride a geographic and cultural crossroads, Armenia has always balanced competing interests, and we continue to affirm our commitment to a sovereign Armenia, free to choose its own partners,” she said.

U.S. ambassadors are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate. Tracy, who has 24 years of experience in public administration, earlier served as Senior Advisor for Russia Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.

Azerbaijan Must Be Held
Accountable for the Destruction of Armenian Cultural Heritage

Ottawa – Today, the Armenian National Committee of
Canada (ANCC) sorrowfully marks the 13th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s
destruction of the historic Armenian cemetery of Djulfa. The ANCC is calling on
the Canadian government to hold Azerbaijan accountable for the systematic
destruction of Armenian historical, cultural, and religious sites and
monuments.

On December 10, 2005, in the framework of a
state-sanctioned policy of hate and destruction, the government of Azerbaijan
began its demolition project of the historic Armenian cemetery in Djulfa, an
ancient Armenian city now located in Azerbaijan. This marked the final blow to
the 10,000 intricately hand carved khachkars
(stone crosses) which were erected since the 6th century all the way through
the 17th century. Through khachkars is
expressed a unique Armenian art form of stone carving, which UNESCO has
recognized the cultural and religious significance to the Armenian people. Its
beauty, detail, and importance are part of humanity’s shared intangible
cultural heritage, and the khachkars have
been identified to need urgent safeguarding.

By December 15, 2005, the final destruction was
complete. Approximately 200 Azerbaijani soldiers gathered at the
Nakhichevan-Iran border to desecrate the remaining grave markers at the Djulfa
Armenian cemetery. The cemetery has since been replaced with an Azerbaijani
military training base.

Despite clear evidence and condemnation by
international bodies such as the European Parliament and International Council
on Monuments and Sites, Azerbaijani authorities continue to deny this crime,
while still promoting the destruction of all Armenian religious and cultural
sites in the country.

Shahen Mirakian, President of the ANCC, stated, “As if
Azerbaijan's continuous aggression towards the Republics of Armenia and Artsakh
are not enough, their brazen denial of this heinous cultural crime comes to add
insult to injury. This is not a behaviour that we, nor the international
community, should stay silent about.”

Armenian acting foreign minister to meet with his Azerbaijani counterpart in Milan

ARKA, Armenia
Dec 3 2018

YEREVAN, December 3. /ARKA/. Armenian Acting Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan will meet with his Azerbaijani counterpart Almar Mammadyarov on December 5 in Milan under mediation by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, the press office of the Armenian foreign ministry reports.

The two countries’ foreign ministers met before that in September under the OSCE Minsk Gruyop co-chairs’ mediation.

They exchanged opinions about Karabakh conflict settlement and arranged for continuation of the dialogue.

Karabakh conflict broke out in 1988 when Karabakh, mainly populated by Armenians, declared its independence from Azerbaijan.

On December 10, 1991, a few days after the collapse of the Soviet Union, a referendum took place in Nagorno-Karabakh, and the majority of the population (99.89%) voted for secession from Azerbaijan.

Afterwards, large-scale military operations began. As a result, Azerbaijan lost control over Nagorno-Karabakh and the seven regions adjacent to it.

Some 30,000 people were killed in this war and about one million people fled their homes.

On May 12, 1994, the Bishkek cease-fire agreement put an end to the military operations.

Тalks brokered by OSCE Minsk Group are being held over peaceful settlement of the conflict. The group is co-chaired by USA, Russia and France. -0—–
