Charles Aznavour obituary; Singer, songwriter and actor, best known for She, who personified French culture to the world
Aznavour's 10 best songs

by Michael Freedland

The singer, songwriter and actor Charles Aznavour, who has died aged 94, was one of France's best-loved entertainers and its most potent show-business export since Maurice Chevalier. Edith Piaf was one of those who encouraged his early career, and in many ways Aznavour could be seen as the male Piaf; his slight frame disguised a similarly huge talent. He was as important a composer and songwriter as he was a singer – and he could be a great actor even without singing a note on screen.

There were times in Aznavour's career when he was as popular outside France as he was in his own country. His recording of She, a sweet, soulful number composed by Aznavour and Herbert Kretzmer, topped the British charts for several weeks in 1974. Aznavour's songs were in the great dramatic tradition of the chanson, storytelling to music, rather than mere verse sung in the way of the conventional pop song. Even when he performed in English, his songs sounded as though they had first been minted in Montmartre. He was often called the French Frank Sinatra and the comparison was apt. When he sang The Old Fashioned Way or Yesterday When I Was Young, listeners somehow caught his nostalgia kick and remembered those days, too.

In films, he was a character actor who was always the most interesting figure on the screen. His lead role as a musician clashing with criminals in François Truffaut 's 1960 drama Tirez sur le Pianiste (Shoot the Piano Player) established him internationally.

Aznavour, however, was always self-deprecating. He would refer people to a crumpled piece of paper on which, as a very young man, he had written his weaknesses. They were, he said: "My voice, my height, my gestures, my lack of culture and education, my frankness and my lack of personality."

No one doubted his frankness, but his personality was one of his greatest characteristics, and he seemed to personify French culture to the English-speaking world. His height (5ft 3in) was the only thing that he could do nothing about, but it was one of those great trademarks that help to mark out a show-business personality – that and his gravelly voice, and the facial features that got craggier as he got older. Aznavour recalled: "They used to say, 'When you are as ugly as that and when you have a voice like that, you do not sing.' But Piaf used to tell me, 'You will be the greatest.'"

Aznavour's family were Armenian and went to France in the wake of the Turkish massacres of their people. His parents, Mischa and Knar Aznavourian, were living in Paris at the time of their son's birth, in a poor part of the Latin quarter, where his father worked as a cook and his mother as a seamstress. His father was also a part-time singer and his mother a sometime actor, but neither made a living at what they wanted to do most.

Encouraged by them, he danced, played the violin, sang and aspired to act. He got work as a film extra from the 1930s onwards and in 1941 joined the Jean Dasté dramatic troupe. During the second world war, having adopted Charles Aznavour as his stage name, he joined the singer-composer Pierre Roche in a nightclub act and gained experience writing lyrics and in cabaret. In the postwar years they went on tour with Piaf around France and in the US, but split up when Roche married.

Aznavour wrote songs for artists including Piaf, Gilbert Bécaud and Juliette Gréco, and in the 1950s began to have some success in his own right, first in France and then internationally. By the early 1960s he was able to sell out Carnegie Hall in New York. He appeared in films such as Les Dragueurs (Young Have No Morals, 1959) and La Tête Contre les Murs (The Keepers, 1959). By the time he made Le Testament d'Orphée (Testament of Orpheus, 1960), he was enough of a star to be featured in a cameo role as himself. After his acclaimed performance in Shoot the Piano Player, he starred in US and British films including Candy (1968) and And Then There Were None (1974), an Agatha Christie adaptation, and in the Oscar-winning German drama The Tin Drum (1979).

In 2002 he appeared in Atom Egoyan's drama about the Armenian genocide, Ararat. Aznavour retained close ties to his family's homeland. When an earthquake hit Armenia in 1988, killing more than 20,000 people, he formed the charity Aznavour for Armenia and wrote Pour Toi Arménie, which he recorded with a lineup of well-known French singers, to help support those affected by the disaster. In 2004 he was made a National Hero of Armenia, and a few years later an Aznavour museum was opened in the capital, Yerevan. He was appointed Armenia's ambassador to Unesco and in 2009 Armenian ambassador to Switzerland.

Across his eight-decade career, he wrote more than 1,000 songs and was said to have sold more than 180m records. He continued to record popular albums, including Duos (2008), a collection of duets with, among others, Elton John, Carole King, Liza Minnelli and Plácido Domingo. In 2011 he held a month-long residency at the Olympia music hall in Paris.

Aznavour was married three times and had six children. "I know my life is a flop," he said once. "A flop as a father, a flop as a man. You must make a choice: a successful life as a man, or show business. Now it is too late even to make a choice. I belong to the public or to my pride. My only salvation is to become a greater artist." A legion would say he achieved that salvation.

He is survived by his third wife, Ulla (nee Thorsel), whom he married in 1967, and their children Katia, Mischa and Nicolas; and by Seda and Charles, the children of his first marriage, to Micheline Rugel. A son, Patrick, from his second marriage, to Evelyne Plessis, predeceased him.

Head of Punch Boxing Promotions Aram Davtyan has announced that Armenia will organize a professional boxing event in December 2018.

“I think we’ll hold the event in Tsaghkadzor on December 8. Our team examined the hotel, Golden Palace, and returned certain that it complies with international standards for events of this kind. However, I can name the date and venue only in about two weeks, when it is decided who’s going to compete in the main fight,” said Davtyan.

According to him, the hall with capacity of 1700 will host 7 or 8 fights and ticket prices will start at AMD 5000.

“We have yet to make the final list of the boxers, although our Narek Abgaryan, Gor Yeritsyan and Aram Avagyan will be there. We want Avagyan to face Evgeny Smirnov in the main fight, but I can’t give concrete information about that yet,” he added.

Eurasian Economic Union could get WTO observer status in two years, says EEC chief

BUSINESS & ECONOMY

It could take the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) approximately two years to be granted an observer status at the World Trade Organization (WTO), Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC),  the executive body of the EEU, Tigran Sargsyan said in an interview to TASS.

“First of all we must get the agreement of our countries, and then we will submit this proposal to the heads of states. After they will give consent, we will address the World Trade Organization. I believe this will take maximum two years,” he said.

Sargsyan emphasized that four of the five members of the EEU are full members of the WTO. This means that whenever there is a debate at the WTO on customs tariffs or any issues relating to mutual trade obstacles, these countries cannot undertake such negotiations on their own because this authority is vested in the EEC.

“Our countries, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, also invite us to take part in those debates for the EEU’s general stance to be presented, because now they cannot make decisions on decrease or increase of tariffs. And because both Kyrgyzstan and Armenia have initially been members of the WTO, and then became participants of the EEU, certain issues arise here which require agreed decisions with all countries. And from this perspective, certainly, our participation in WTO debates will be productive and useful for all,” Sargsyan said.

Prime Minister’s Administrative Resources

Yerevan City Council’s election campaign poses serious questions about its impartiality and independence that we keep hearing from May 17th. The campaign has not even finished, and each day presents new unexpected violations. In order to gain political capital, this election, that one may argue sets the tone for the upcoming national elections, must have unequivocally followed the rule of law. Yet, that’s not the case. The Revolutionary government takes no effort to follow even basic ethical norms and violates the provisions of the Electoral Code. The biggest hypocrisy is the fact that the main violator is the state leader—Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

By participating in the City Council election campaign, Mr. Pashinyan in essence use abuses his executive resources. Perhaps if he wasn’t participating in the election campaign so aggressively, his election violations could have gone unnoticed. However, he is violating the election law, as he is relying on executive resources to campaign and support only one particular candidate (see Armenian Electoral Code, Article 23.1).

Furthermore, by supporting a specific political party, Mr. Pashinyan essentially acts in his capacity as the Prime Minister and issues orders in his official capacity (See Electoral Code, Article 23.3.1). His orders are so ridiculous that even people under his direct subordination question those orders.

What are the safeguards that the executive resources the Prime Minister is relying upon to influence the City Council’s election now will not be continuously used for the same goals in other rounds of these elections, let alone during the upcoming parliamentary elections?

The Armenian National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet named after Alexander Spendiaryan will bring “The Magic Flute” by one of the most celebrated composers of all time, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to the Kuwait Opera stage for the first time within the frames of its inauguration.

This will be the first opera performance throughout Kuwait's history, Yerevan Opera Theater’s press service told Panorama.am.

“The Magic Flute” is a tale, which illustrates the resplendent power of love, art and music, transporting audiences into a wonderful fantastical realm. The opera tells the story of Tamino, a young hero, sent on a quest by the Queen of Night to rescue her daughter, Pamina, from the wicked wizard, Sarastro.

Merkel heard what she wanted to hear in Armenia

As part of the South Caucasus tour, German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited Armenia, where the visit was called historic. Germany is Armenia's third largest trade partner after Russia and China. According to the National Statistical Service, in the first half of this year Armenian-German trade increased by 53.6% compared to the same period of last year to $216.6 million. Armenia exports copper, ferromolybdenum and aluminum foil production to Germany, in recent years clothes and other goods also have been exported in small amounts. There are 150 companies with German capital in Armenia, the largest of which is the Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum Combine.

Armenia imports more than 800 types of goods from Germany, including cars, medicines, household items, various equipment. For more than 20 years, Germany has been a donor country for Armenia and contributed to its reforms, as well as the development of hydropower and regional structures. Merkel highly appreciated the peaceful nature of the "velvet" revolution, which took place in the spring and said that Germany "wants to help Armenia in making these bold changes." During the visit, the sides specified areas for deepening cooperation. In particular, they discussed education, research and economics.

Armenian experts drew attention to the fact that Merkel's visit coincided with the new conditions that emerged in the country after the "April" revolution: an active fight against corruption, the creation of more healthy and equal business conditions, the protection of small and medium-sized businesses from the previous heavy taxation burden. These and other circumstances can play a significant role in providing a new impulse in the development of bilateral relations, including attracting German investments in the Armenian economy.

"In political terms, we have a dynamic and reliable partnership with Germany, however, the great economic potential has not been used yet," Armenian Ambassador to Germany Ashot Smbatyan said.

During the Chancellor's visit, foreign policy issues were also discussed. Merkel again advocated the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. They also touched on Armenia's cooperation with the EU, including the implementation of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement. Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan said that Armenia does not build foreign policy on the principles of counterbalance and has no intention to make sharp changes in its foreign policy: "We intend to develop relations with Russia within the Eurasian Economic Union and CSTO. At the same time, we intend to develop relations with the EU." In response, the German Chancellor expressed the opinion that Armenia could serve as an example of how a country can cooperate with Russia and the European Union at the same time.

Armenian experts note that against the background of the processes taking place in some post-Soviet republics, namely their aspirations to enter the EU and NATO, the European leader heard what she wanted to hear in Armenia. Given a number of serious issues, including Russia's painful reaction to these trends, the Germans seek to place the issues of possible accession of the former Soviet republics to the EU on hold. Given the existence of certain contradictions between Germany and the United States, Berlin seeks to find the right format for its relations with Russia, avoiding all sorts of problems and complications in every possible way.
