MOSCOW, Sept 29 (Reuters) – The death toll from an explosion and fire at a fuel depot in Nagorno-Karabakh has risen to 170, Armenpress news agency reported on Friday citing local officials in the breakaway region.

The blast occurred as thousands of ethnic Armenians fled the breakaway enclave after their fighters were defeated by Azerbaijan in a lightning military operation.

The authorities have not given any explanation of the cause of the blast.

The number of victims rose sharply from an earlier announcement by Karabakh authorities reporting 68 dead on Tuesday evening.

Rescue work at the blast site continues.

As of Friday morning, more than 84,700 of the 120,000 ethnic Armenians who call Nagorno-Karabakh home had already crossed into Armenia.

Asbarez: ‘Encounters and Convergences’: Prof. Seta Dadoyan Publishes New Book

Professor Seta B. Dadoyan recently published her latest book, titled “Encounters and Convergences. A Book of Ideas and Art.”

An amalgam of philosophy and art, the book is an oeuvre in form and content, and as such, a statement about the author’s scholarly, aesthetic, and intellectual endeavors in general. Opposed to conventional and “strictly academic” practices, the opus is also an illustrated argument in favor of critical vantage points and interdisciplinary approaches. Dadoyan strongly posits the basic commonality and unity of the humanities, the arts and the social sciences, including Armenian Studies in particular. Since artworks and texts are responses to circumstances, and their motives and objectives are understanding human “situatedness” and debating the social-historical conditions, then their social embeddedness is common ground.

Similar to her over ten books and many studies in the history of the Armenian experience in the Near East, philosophy, and art history, this opus in turn is self-reflective in conception, cross-disciplinary in scope, dialectical in method, hermeneutical in approach, and in this case, artistic in _expression_. The accumulation of almost sixty “wartime” drawings, and half that number on “the spirit of matter,” two phases separated by an interval of rigorous academic work over three decades, establishes the legitimacy of her criteria for the “truth-content” as the meaning of both writings and artworks. Since both happened in phases and in response to specific circumstances, Part Two of the book is structured on a schematic autobiographical grid.

The book consists of 175 large pages. Its contents may be summarized as follows: the “Prologue on Scholarship and the Arts” introduces the subject; Part One in five chapters, entitled “My Aesthetic,” provides the theoretical-critical context by brief discussions of aesthetic theories through art history and the contemporary situation of the arts and mass cultures; Part Two, “The Quest and the Path” is in four chapters, “The Prelude” (10 works in color illustrations), “Encounters with Strife and Suffering” (seven works in full page illustrations), “Wartime Art and Aesthetic” (44 works in full page illustrations), “Of the Spirit of Matter” (28 works in full page illustrations). The “Epilogue” concludes the book, culminating with an Appendix: “Content with List of Illustrations.”

No tensions between Yerevan, Moscow, Armenian Foreign Ministry says

 TASS
Russia – Sept 7 2023
Recently, Yerevan was making critical remarks regarding Moscow’s position on regional issues, and the fulfillment of duties by Russian peacekeepers in the Lachin corridor

YEREVAN, September 7. /TASS/. There are no tensions between Yerevan and Moscow, there are issues that are being discussed routinely, Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Paruyr Hovhannisyan said during a briefing.

He noted that "Armenia does criticize the CSTO, but the withdrawal from the organization is not on agenda."

Recently, Yerevan was making critical remarks regarding Moscow’s position on regional issues, and the fulfillment of duties by Russian peacekeepers in the Lachin corridor. Armenian authorities invited a EU civilian mission that has been operating on the Azerbaijani border since the beginning of this year and advocated an increase of the number of observers. In mid-September, Armenia will hold the Eagle Partner joint military exercise with the US on its territory.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova noted that statements of Armenian politicians often comprise "rhetoric on the verge of boorishness." She underscored that Moscow is ready to talk with Armenian representatives both on the expert level and on a good political level. Meanwhile, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained that Russia continues to fulfill its function as a guarantor of security and scrupulously works with both Armenia and Azerbaijan to resolve the situation. The joint Armenian-US military exercise will not contribute to stabilization of the situation in the region, he added.

Zakharova also pointed out that the deployment of the EU observation mission did not help to reduce the tension at the border, where skirmishes still take place. She also noted the proposal to deploy a CSTO mission in the region, noting that all member states stated their readiness and adding that "the ball is in Yerevan’s court."

L.A. City to Dedicate Westside Intersection as `Republic of Artsakh Square’

Aug 31 2023

Los Angeles City Council members will have a dedication ceremony Thursday to name a Westside intersection “Republic of Artsakh Square,” in an effort to raise awareness of the Azerbaijan blockade of Artsakh and its impacts.

Council President Paul Krekorian will be joined at the ceremony by Councilwoman Traci Park, whose Eleventh District includes the newly designated Artsakh Square, and Robert Avetisyan, permanent representative of the Republic of Artsakh to the United States.

In May, the council agreed to designate the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Granville Avenue as Artsakh Square in honor of the embattled region that has great meaning for L.A.’s vast Armenian community. According to Krekorian’s office, the dedication ceremony was on hold as city officials waited for street signs to be completed by the Department of Transportation.

The intersection is also the location of the Los Angeles consulate of Azerbaijan.

“Azerbaijan’s dictator has explicitly threatened genocide and called for the expulsion of all Armenians from territories he claims, once again threatening the annihilation of the Armenian people in their ancient homeland,” Krekorian said in a statement when the council approved the renaming of the intersection.

The Republic of Artsakh, formerly known as the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, seceded from the Soviet Union and formed a democratic state. It is surrounded by the territory of Azerbaijan and only has access to Armenia and the outside world through the Lachin Corridor, which is now being cut off by the armed forces of Azerbaijan.

The territory of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan. It is called Artsakh by Armenians.

Azerbaijan’s Consulate General in Los Angeles has accused Armenia of committing atrocities on its land.

“In the early 1990s, Armenia invaded and ethnically cleansed 20% of Azerbaijan’s sovereign territory with impunity. Over 1 million Azerbaijanis were forcibly displaced from their lands (800,000 from occupied districts of Azerbaijan and 250,000 from Armenia),” former Consul General Nasimi Aghayev said last year.

“In 2020, Azerbaijan liberated its territories from Armenia’s illegal and United Nations-condemned occupation. During the war, Armenia bombed our major cities, using even the widely banned cluster munitions (as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International also confirmed), as a result of which 101 Azerbaijani civilians, including 12 infants and children, were killed, 423 civilians were wounded and 80,000 displaced.”
