Marginal judgements typical to half-educated people: Russian ‘Vzglyad’ comments on why Azerbaijan’s Aliyev creates myths

Marginal judgements typical to half-educated people: Russian 'Vzglyad'
comments on why Azerbaijan's Aliyev creates myths

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 10, ARMENPRESS. Ilham Aliyev’s statements according
to which Yerevan is a “historical Azerbaijani land” are interesting in
a sense that they are not only totally absurd from historical
perspective, but also the marginal historiography and mythology can
sometimes lead to dangerous consequences, Russian Vzglyad (Взгляд)
newspaper published an article on Azerbaijani President’s recent
ridiculous statement, Armenpress reports.

“It is clear that Ilham Aliyev makes such loud statements on the eve
of the presidential elections to be held in April 2018. From the
practical point of view, they, of course, are directed to the domestic
audience and will not bring any result in the future. There is also no
need to expect escalations of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, but such
loud formulation of military-political issues by the country’s leader
should be studied”, the author of the article Evgeni Krutikov said.

The author states that perhaps such rhetoric can be useful for Aliyev
in everyday life, but it in no way can affect the real life, it just
can promote unhealthy imagination in terms of the place of that
country in history, xenophobia and racism. “Unfortunately, in
practice, we see that since the second half of 1980s such marginal
judgements are typical to a small number of half-educated people, but
they can lead to wars, and the everyday behavior can be transformed
into xenophobia towards other people. Because foolishness is a similar
source of human tragedies, like the bad will”, the author said.

He at the same time notes that the marginal historiography is not so
harmless phenomenon as it may seem at first glance. “Everything can be
much worse”, Evgeni Krutikov concludes the article.

Meet the Armenian artist turning food into fashion illustrations
If you’ve ever wondered what wearing orange peel would look like, Edgar Artis' Instagram account for you.

By  Lucy Rennick
Orange peel, browned apple slices, lychee skin: to most people, these things are compost items, or even worse, rubbish. To Paris-based Armenian artist Edgar Artis, however, they’re much more than that.

Artis creates takes everyday items and food scraps and uses them to augment distinct, pencil-drawn fashion illustrations, blurring the lines between art, fashion and food.

“I would describe my work as a way of showing the beauty of the simplest things around us that we may not notice,” Artis tells SBS. The 23-year-old is a self-taught artist, studying a Bachelor of Fashion Design and Technology at IFA Paris.

He explains his Instagram account is both a site for experimentation and something that he hopes will inspire others to make art.

And, really, who wouldn’t be inspired by pancake fashion?

Or banana fashion?

Artis uses food to tell stories, and to show his followers how beautiful life can be. “It is quite fun to work with foods that give shape to my 2D drawings,” he says, “But my favourite material is flowers, because they are very soft and fragile. It’s pure beauty. Nature is innocent. I love the innocence.” His work includes finely crafted prawn ball gowns, skirts made out of hot chips and croissant tutus, but his favourite work is War of A Thousand Feelings, made out of metal nut, bolts and screws.
“Sometimes we get bullied, criticised and people want to see us down, and we have to dress the amor to protect ourselves and go through it,” the caption reads. “She is dancing and she is in a war with her feelings, but she keeps on fighting cause she craves to win and find the piece inside.”

For Artis, the next step is to take his skills off Instagram and into the real world of fashion. “I want to start creating real clothing,” he says. “I’m studying everything about [it] at IFA Paris, so I hope soon you will see more interesting objects. I also want to collaborate with other artists and photographers. I have some crazy ideas which I hope will turn into reality.”

 Look out, Karl Lagerfeld.

Art: Exhibition of artwork by Armenian sculptor to take place at Tretyakov Gallery

Panorama, Armenia
Feb 7 2018

Russia's Tretyakov Gallery announced today a solo exhibition of the sculptor Nikolai Nikogossian for the first time, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of his birth.

"This ambitious demonstration will allow museum patrons to appraise N.B. Nikogossian's excellence not only as a sculptor but also as a painter, as the latter persona has been virtually unknown to the general public so far," the Gallery said in a release.

According to the source, the exhibition will include portraits, self-portraits, landscapes, and still-lifes – in all, 60 canvases from the master's family collection.

In addition, 10 graphic sheets will be put on display, as well as 63 sculptured works from the family collection and the Tretyakov Gallery funds.

To note, works of Nikolai Nikogossian – painter, graphic artist, teacher, People's Artist of Armenia (1977) People's Artist of the USSR (1982), winner of USSR State Prize (1977) – have entered the "golden fund" of the Soviet art. They are in the Russian Museum, the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Fine Arts of Karelia the State Art gallery of Armenia, in the art museums of former Soviet Union
During his long life, Nikolai Nikogossian created more than 200 busts (in bronze, wood and marble), 600 oil paintings and 3000 charcoal drawings.

Among these works – well-known sculptural portraits of Gorky, G.V.Sviridov, Shostakovich, Komitas, images of Shirakatsi, the composition "Maya Plisetskaya," "toilers of the Ararat Valley" as well as number of outstanding works of monumental sculpture: the monuments of Avetik Isahakyan in Gyumri, Yeghishe Charents in Yerevan, etc.

Ashot Stepanyan: That is to say, if I beat a person I will pay less than if I smoke in the street (video)

The participants of the “We Will Smoke” initiative were protesting against the draft law of the RA Ministry of Health today in front of the Government building. The participants of the action are concerned about the amount of fines imposed on smokers.

As it is known, according to the draft law on “The reduction and prevention of tobacco products exploitation,” for example, administrative fine for smoking in public places will be 250 000 drams for smoking in public places, 100 000 drams for smoking in bus stops, and so on.

“There is no place for smoking. If there were such a place, everyone would go there. There is no place intended, but smoking is already banned. If people break the law, and do not smoke in special areas, then think of a new law to punish those people, “said Sedrak Poghosyan, the participant of the initiative.

The fines imposed by the draft law are higher than the penalties for other offenses punishable by criminal offenses.

“It is fined 50-150 000 drams for causing light bodily harm, and 250 thousand drams for smoking in the street. That is to say, if I beat a person I will pay less than if I smoke in the street,” said Sedrak Poghosyan.

Non-smokers also protest with smokers.

“There is no published mechanism in the bill concerning who will penalize and how will happen. Suppose we are a few guys smoking in the pub, and the pub owner lets us. Who will come and say, do not smoke?” said Ashot Stepanyan, the participant of the initiative.

Unlike the initiators, many non-smoking citizens favor the law. It is expected that the law will come into force in November 2018.

Armenia’s great friend, former US Senator Bob Dole, was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, reported the Voice of America Armenian Service.

Dole, who was severely wounded during the Second World War, returned to a full life thanks to renowned American Armenian physician Hampar Kelikian. It was through this Armenian orthopedic surgeon that it became possible to save Bob Dole’s right hand, which all other physicians said it had to be amputated.

In the future, Senator Dole never forgot his Armenian “savior,” and had a special consideration toward the Armenian members of his staff.

As senator, Bob Dole played a key role in the founding of Armenian-American relations, said executive director Aram Hamparian of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

Senator Dole was a major supporter of Armenian Genocide recognition.

Also, he played a key role in sending aid to earthquake-hit Armenia in 1988.

In addition, Bob Dole was one of the initiators of the US assistance program to Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh).

Armenian Church celebrates Feast of the Birth of St. John the Baptist

Panorama, Armenia

The Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates the birth of St. John the Baptist, Araratian Patriarchal Diocese reports. The birth is described in detail in the Gospel, according to Like (Lk 1:5-25). One day Zechariah, father of St John the Baptist, was doing his work as a priest in the Temple and was burning incense on the altar. An angel of the Lord appeared to him and said that God had heard his prayer and his wife would bear him a son. Zechariah had to name him John. Zechariah didn’t believe the angel as he was and old man, and his wife was old, too. And because he hadn’t believed the angel he became unable to speak and remained silent until the birth of John.

St. John the Baptist, who should baptize the Savior, had been aware and rejoiced for the birth of Jesus even before his birth. According to the Evangelist, when St. Mary, Holy Mother of God, visited Elizabeth, mother of St John the Baptist, the latter, being filled with the Holy Spirit cried out, “Why should this great thing happen to me, that my Lord’s mother comes to visit me? For as soon as I heard your greeting, the baby within me jumped with gladness” (Lk 1:43-44).

Continuation of the words of Elizabeth are the message of this feast addressed to all Christians throughout the world, “How happy you are to believe that the Lord’s message to you will come true!” (Lk 1:45).

Sports: Manchester United Rumour Mill: Mkhitaryan’s Inter swap, Woodward won’t sanction Rose

January 4, 2018 3:54AM

OUTCAST Henrikh Mkhitaryan could be used as a makeweight in a deal for a Mourinho midfield target, Woodward won’t sanction fullback deal and United’s January wants revealed!

All that and more in a Manchester United edition of Rumour Mill!

MOURINHO EXIT RUMOURS

Concern is mounting inside Old Trafford surrounding the future of manager Mourinho. The Daily Mail suggest that the Special One is cutting a dejected figure in Manchester, and has been spending less and less time in the city, with his home in London, as his side slip further and futher behind runaway leaders Manchester City.

Additionally, the report suggests staff believe that the Portugese manager has withdrawn further into his inner sanctum and could quit the job at the end of the season.

Just last week Mourinho criticized United’s board about their willingness to spend transfer funds and question marks have been raised about his happiness in the Old Trafford hot seat. He also missed the mark in taking aim at a club legend, Paul Scholes.

Could the Special One kick-start another managerial merry go round in 2018?

MKHI SWAP DEAL

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has yet again been linked with an escape from his Old Trafford nightmare, with Corriere dello Sport reporting that the Armenian could arrive at Inter Milan with Joao Mario heading in the opposite direction.

Mario joined Inter for £35m (AU$60m) last summer, while Mkhitaryan was a £37m (AU$63m) signing for Jose Mourinho. Their similar price tags, and the struggles of both to settle at their respective new homes could see the clubs look at a straight swap deal for the pair.

The deal seems to make sense, with Mourinho reportedly eager to replace the exiled Mkhitaryan in the United midfield.

INTER ALSO KEEN ON MATA?

Juan Mata’s time at United could come to an end sooner rather than later due to an interesting clause in the midfielder’s contract.

AS report that the Mancunian club only have until May to activate a clause which allows them to renew the Spaniard’s deal until 2019.

A failure to do so could see the 29-year-old depart for free in the summer.

Mata is also being linked with a move to Inter Milan, reports The Mirror.

MOURINHO’S JAN PLANS

It’s no secret that Mourinho isn’t happy with his Manchester United squad.

And the Portuguese manager will reportedly do something about it in January, planning no less than three signings to bolster his side, according to MailOnline.

Mourinho is allegedly after two fullbacks, one for each side of his back four, as well as an attacking midfielder as he attempts to reinvigorate the Old Trafford playing staff.

MOURINHO’S ROSE FRUSTRATION

The Special One is after a pair of fullbacks, and he wants one of them to be Spurs outcast Danny Rose.

However, United chief Ed Woodward doesn’t exactly see eye to eye with the Portuguese manager, telling Mourinho that in order to sign the Spurs man he’ll have to part with other members of his first team squad.

The Daily Mirror suggest that Rose could be available for around £50m (AU$86m).

DARMIAN A WANTED MAN

He may not be Mourinho’s favourite player, but it appears Matteo Darmian still has some admirers back in his homeland.

The Italian’s agent has suggested that the fullback has attracted significant interest from the Serie A, where he used to play for Torino, although it is unclear whether the Red Devils are happy to sell the 28-year-old.

Darmian has made just two Premier League starts this season and has been linked with a move to Roma.
