Russia will continue to mediate Karabakh peace process: MFA

“Russia intends to continue its mediating mission in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement together with the French and US Co-Chairs and on the basis of the provisions stipulated for in the five joint statements of the Presidents of Russia, the United States and France,” Spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova told a press conference today.

She reminded that the statements stress the unacceptability of the use of force in the settlement of the Karabakh conflict and urge the leaderships of Armenia and Azerbaijan to solve disputable issues on the basis of the principles of non-use of force or the threat of force, territorial integrity and the right of peoples to self-determination.

Maria Zakharova said that Russia will continue individual efforts, considering the country’s close relations with Armenia and Azerbaijan, which allow for frank exchange of opinion on key issues.

She reminded that Russia played a direct role in the signing of the ceasefire agreement in 1994, which remains in force to date. “An important phase in Russia’s mediating efforts was the adoption of the Moscow Declaration in 2008, which stipulates for the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict through direct dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This is the first and the only document bearing the signatures of the Presidents of the two countries,” the Spokesperson said.

At a trilateral meeting mediated by Russia in 2011, the parties agreed to implement an investigation mechanism. Russia played a key role in ceasing the large-scale military actions in April last year by inviting the Chiefs of General Staffs of Armenia and Azerbaijan,” Zakharova said.

She stressed that “observance of all above-mentioned agreements is key to the consistent continuation of the peace process aimed at reaching a sustainable resolution to the conflict.”

CHP Istanbul MP Selina Doğan commemorated Armenian writers and thinkers Elbis Gesaratsyan, Sırpuhi DĂŒsap, Zabel Asadur, Zabel Yesayan ve HayganuƟ Mark, who are considered as the first feminists of Turkey, in the parliament.

Stating that many things have been said on the occasion of March 8 but the problem remains as it is, Doğan said, “This means that either the way we discuss this issue is not right or we are not sincere.”

Ignoring Zabel Yesayan while commemorating Halide Edip

Saying that others and minorities are forgotten in the history of women’s struggle in Turkey, Doğan said: “While Halide Edip is naturally commemorated with respect, her contemporary Zabel Yesayan, with whom she exchanged letters, is ignored. While dear Sabiha Sertel has the place she deserved in the feminism history of this country, nobody remembered her contemporary Elbis Gesaratsyan. While Nezihe Muhiddin, who struggled for enfranchisement of woman and whom I respect deeply, was making feminist history, her counterpart HayganuƟ Mark, who issued a woman magazine for 14 years, is not remembered at all.”

Socialist International adopts resolution on Armenian Genocide

The Socialist International adopted a resolution on Armenian Genocide as a result of the 25th Congress held in the historic city of Cartagena, Colombia, hosted by its member party, the Colombian Liberal Party, under the main heading For a world in peace, with equality and solidarity. Delegates from member parties, affiliated and guest organizations from all continents of the world gathered together in the Cartagena Convention Centre for the Congress which was held from 2 to 4 March 2017.

The Resolution reads:

After the last Socialist International Congress, the world marked the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide and witnessed a number of new countries, heads of states and international organizations officially recognising this crime against all humanity.

The 2014 December SI Council Meeting in Geneva, recognising the continued worldwide progress on this human rights and genocide prevention issue, appropriately placed the Armenian Genocide on the agenda of its first Council in 2015, held one hundred years after the start of this atrocity.

The July 2015 Council Meeting in New York endorsed an agreement reached earlier by the SI Vice Presidents from Armenia and Turkey, for the Socialist International to organise a special hearing or round-table discussion around the theme: “How Turkish recognition of the Armenian Genocide can contribute to a genuine reconciliation between Turkey and Armenia?”

This meeting was to have included the participation of representatives of SI member parties in both Armenia and Turkey, as well as other interested member parties, and specially invited experts, NGOs, and others.

Consistent with both past decisions on this matter and the SI’s longstanding support for a just resolution of the Armenian Genocide, the SI XXV Congress reaffirms its readiness to work with our Armenian and Turkish member parties to facilitate a hearing or round-table discussion regarding the benefits of Turkey’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide for reconciliation between Armenians and Turks.

Mourinho expects Mkhitaryan to face Chelsea

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho expects Henrikh Mkhitaryan to return in time for the Emirates FA Cup quarter-final with Chelsea on 13 March.

The Armenia international was a key figure in the previous round’s win at Blackburn Rovers before sustaining a hamstring injury soon after scoring the only goal of the Europa League tie at Saint-Etienne.

The problem caused the attacking midfielder to miss the EFL Cup final and he also looks set to sit out the visit of Bournemouth to Old Trafford on Saturday and the European encounter at FC Rostov next Thursday.

However, Mourinho believes the 28-year-old is well on the road to recovery, even if another of his players, Bastian Schweinsteiger, has picked up a minor knock.

“Mkhitaryan is still out,” the manager told . “He didn’t recover in time for this game. I believe, during the next week, especially for the weekend [ahead of the trip to Stamford Bridge], he will be fine and we don’t have major problems. Bastian has a little thing but, apart from that, everybody is fine.”

The boss has promised to utilise his squad in the coming weeks as the games continue to pile up for the in-form Reds.

“I told them [the squad] already a player that is not even selected can start the next match and this is the reality,” he said. “We have to go match after match. If we decide not to give a priority to any competition, as we’ve said every competition is important, we cannot choose this team to play this match and that team to play that one. We have to go match after match and make readjustments and try to be as strong as possible.”
