Three Yerevan police officers hospitalized – one in serious condition

YEREVAN, APRIL 16, ARMENPRESS. Three police officers have been injured in the brief clash with opposition MP Nikol Pashinyan’s crowd in Baghramyan Avenue, Yerevan. The officers have been hospitalized in the Nairi Medical Center.

“We can’t assess the condition of one officer right now because he is currently in the operating room. His condition is worse than the other two. He had fragmentation wounds,” Nairi Medical Center executive Anatoly Gnuni told reporters.

Gnuni said opposition MP Nikol Pashinyan suffered injuries only to his wrists. Gnuni also added that Pashinyan doesn’t require a hospital stay and he can leave whenever he wants because he has been treated.

Earlier, opposition MP Nikol Pashinyan and his crowd of supporters escalated the situation in Baghramyan Avenue in Yerevan.

Pashinyan led his followers from France Square to the beginning of the Baghramyan Avenue, mentioning he “wants to go the parliament, his working place”.

Along with other opposition MPs from the Yelk faction, Pashinyan intended to breach the police line. Deputy chief of the Yerevan Police Department Valery Osipyan negotiated with the MPs and agreed to allow the opposition lawmakers to head to the parliament.

However, Pashinyan began shouting that he will not go alone and that his supporters must also go through the lines.

Despite numerous calls from the police to maintain order, Pashinyan climbed onto the steel barricade, which led to a chaotic situation.

The crowd began lifting the barricades and using them against officers.

A brawl began between protesters and police officers. At one point the MP and his supporters even climbed on a vehicle. The situation drastically escalated.

Police forces installed a barbed wire across the street and smoke was briefly seen on the scene.

Yerevan police issued a statement demanding opposition MP Nikol Pashinyan to cease the rally in the city. In case of failure to comply within a reasonable period of time, police said they will disperse the rally with special measures and force.

“Public order has been grossly violated as a result of the violent actions of protesters of the rally led by you in Baghramyan Avenue.

All warnings, demands and other restrictive actions of the police are no longer effective, thus, under Article 33 of the law on assembly, police are demanding from you to cease the rally.

In case of your absence from the location of the rally or failure to comply with the demand within a reasonable period of time, police will disperse the rally using force and special measures,” the police said in a statement addressed to opposition MP Nikol Pashinyan.

5 local favorites in the Armenian capital: iNews

PanArmenian, Armenia
April 7 2018

PanARMENIAN.Net – It’s curious how little exposure there is for Yerevan, capital of Armenia. This former Soviet city is older than Rome and is full of ancient and modern culture interacting in interesting ways, author Dimitris Hall says in a feature published on iNews, revealing five local favorites in the Armenian capital.

Armenia’s best brandy and wine

Ararat is one of Armenia’s best-known brandy makers, but is by no means the only one, nor the most noteworthy. In fact, the Noy Wine Factory is built on the foundations of a 16th-century fortress, the walls of which are accessible from the cellar. If that’s not enough to warrant a visit, Noy’s brandy and wine are some of the best in the country, at least according to local Sofia.

Cold comfort in a leafy location

Lovers’ Park is right in the city centre, a quiet oasis close to all the important government buildings and sights, such as the Government Palace and the National Assembly, and is surrounded by fountains, plants, flowers and statues.

Radio Yerevan memorial

One of Yerevan’s most important claims to fame is the jokes connected to Radio Yerevan and its public radio company from the days of the USSR. The popularity of these jokes across the Iron Curtain during the Cold War brought the East and West closer together, and they can still be heard in some countries to this day. A Singing Sculpture was created to commemorate Radio Yerevan’s 90th anniversary as well as the 60th anniversary since the first public TV broadcast. It has a hidden radio receiver always tuned to the Public Radio of Armenia.

The genius of Eduard Khazaryan

The man known as the “Armenian da Vinci” was the creator (and player) of the world’s smallest violin. Eduard Kazaryan passed away in 2012 and was a polymath sculptor that worked to extraordinarily microscopic levels, often creating works of art smaller than a grain of sugar or containing elements hundreds of times thinner than a human hair. His work was exhibited in the US, where it was dubbed an “8th wonder of the world”.

A mysterious lake

Yerevanian Lake, an artificial reservoir in the outskirts of the city, hides secrets in its depths. In 1968, Paleolithic obsidian tools were discovered in a flooded cave on its shores, now belonging to the US Embassy in Armenia and currently out of bounds. Only 8 years later, in 1976, a trolleybus fell into the reservoir carrying 96 passengers, most of which did not survive. Amazingly, world record-breaking fin-swimming champion Shavarsh Karapetyan was jogging along the lake at the time and made history by heroically diving in and managing to save 20 of the trapped passengers from a depth of 10 metres. His sports career was ruined, and the tragedy, too negative for the USSR’s image at the time, was censored within the country, but that only made this lake’s reputation greater.

Armenia Attaches Importance to Ties with Iran: Envoy
  • March, 11, 2018 – 16:02

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Artashes Tumanyan said for nearly 27 years, Armenia, as an independent state, has had bilateral ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In recent years, the diplomat stated, political, economic and cultural relations between the two countries have developed satisfactorily.

He further emphasized that the relationship with Iran is a top priority and has “a special place” in the foreign policy of Armenia.

The envoy went on to say that the close ties are stable and would not be affected by the will of a third country.

In recent years, Tehran and Yerevan have ramped up efforts to promote bilateral relations in all political and economic spheres.

Back in October, Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan paid an official visit to Iran at the invitation of Iranian First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri.

In a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Tehran on October 10, the Armenian premier expressed his country’s willingness to broaden ties with Iran and said the two neighbors could boost economic relations by tapping into free trade zones in the border areas.

Armenia’s ruling coalition will officially nominate Armen Sarkissian’s candidacy as the 4th President of Armenia, secretary of the ARF parliamentary faction Aghvan Vardanyan told reporters after Sarkissian’s meeting with the coalition partners Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) and the ARF in the parliament.

“The mechanism is such that the presidential candidate is nominated by lawmakers of the two factions of the coalition, and this decision was made at the meeting”, Vardanyan said.

He said that the necessary signatures for the nomination of Armen Sarkissian are already being collected. “If I’m not mistaken, more than 60 signatures have already been collected. For nominating a presidential candidate, the signatures of one fourth of the total number of lawmakers is required, meaning twice more has been collected”, he said.

Vardanyan said that Sarkissian delivered a speech at the meeting, which is identical to the desires, life and ideas of every citizen of Armenia.

Earlier in January Armen Sarkissian, Armenia’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, was offered by incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan, who also serves as President of the country’s ruling Republican Party, to be the party’s candidate for the upcoming presidential elections. Sarkissian initially requested a brief period of time for pondering the offer, and in the meanwhile held various meetings with political parties, civil society representatives, Diaspora structures and others, and subsequently agreed to be nominated.

Nalbandian: Baku`s attempts to distort the situation around the
Karabakh conflict settlement are regarded as a perversion

Yerevan February 23

Marianna Mkrtchyan. The European Union has repeatedly expressed its
full support for the efforts and approaches of the OSCE Minsk Group
co-chairs for the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian stated this at a joint
press conference with Foreign Minister of Madagascar Henri
Rabari-Ndzak on February 23 in Yerevan, referring to Baku's statements
that there are no provisions in the Brussels Declaration that are
important for the Karabakh settlement.

"You know a well-known character from a fairy tale who, being alone,
starts screaming out of fear, maybe Azerbaijan does the same for a
long time, since the approach of the OSCE Minsk Group on the
settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict enjoys full EU support, ,
including on the margins of the Brussels summit during my meeting with
Federica Mogherini, "the Armenian minister said.

At the same time, he added that the approach of the co-chairs, which
repeatedly stated, including after the last visit to the region, was
also known, the conflict should be resolved through peaceful
negotiations on the basis of three well-known principles. According to
the Armenian Minister, the European Union not only expressed its full
support for the efforts and approaches of the mediators, but also
repeatedly stated that these principles are the basis for the
settlement of the conflict. "I detailed the provisions of the Brussels
Declaration and Baku's attempts to distort the situation, I would like
to say that the attempts of the Azerbaijani side that have become
chronic have been described as a perversion." Armenia also shares this
belief, "Nalbandian concluded.
