Guilty As Charged; Meeting A Ratbag Of The Worst Kind

GUILTY AS CHARGED; MEETING A RATBAG OF THE WORST KIND
By Patrick Watson

The Advertiser, Australia
October 3, 2005 Monday

AN INTERVIEW with Diamanda Galas is a bit like meeting St Peter. It
could go either way. “I’ve had eight or 10 interviews this morning.

Some journalists ask the most stupid f . . . ing questions. I might
go hang myself in the bathroom,” she says.

It’s the kind of threat that, perhaps, holds just a hint of truth.

After all, this is the same woman who wrote The S . . . of God,
walked the streets as a prostitute in Oakland, California, and has
dedicated four albums to the AIDS epidemic.

A classically trained pianist with an opera singer’s voice of four
octaves, Diamanda Galas has been performing her frighteningly haunting
ballads since 1978.

On her upcoming tour, Guilty Guilty Guilty, she promises a program
of homicidal love songs, including Johnny Cash’s Long Black Veil,
Edith Piaf’s Heaven Have Mercy, and Hank Williams’ I’m So Lonesome
I Could Cry.

They’re not exactly the kind of genres you’d associate with the gaunt
Galas, but at least the subject matter rings true. “Morbidity and
depression aren’t fascinating. It just happens to exist in everything,
like everything else. I’ve my share of the s . . . that life is
composed of,” she says.

“The stoics said if you expect from life only happiness, you’re a
fool. They had it figured out. I don’t make it up. I’m not fascinated
about going through morbid states, but when I talk about it, I talk
about it in an undiluted way.”

The LA Weekly called her “the original badass musician”.

It seems to make sense, particularly for the blatantly nonconformist
artist who has previously written works such as Plague Mass, Concert
for the Damned and something called Defixiones, a meditation on the
Armenian genocide and the politically co-operative denial of it. She
is, she confesses, a ratbag of the worst kind and rejects most of
what society has to offer.

“It’s just a different way of doing it. People think that’s so
depressing and so desperate and it’s so this and that. In fact,
there’s no more to it than Greek women who mourn the dead saying
hello to those below,” she explains.

“It’s not scary music. What is scary to me is not to be able to
express myself. Not expressing myself, now that’s really scary.”

Asked what she thinks about being labelled the “princess of darkness”
and she is outraged: “I’m not the princess, I’m the queen of
darkness. I don’t address these things at all.”

She also hates the term “Goth”: “In America, you’re either black,
white or Hispanic. They look at my white skin and black hair and say
Gothic. They don’t see that I’m Greek.

“Lots of people come up with different opinions. I just do what I do.”

Which includes, of course, her legendary fascination with AIDS:
“When I become involved with an issue like that, it’s not going to
last just two months. It’s a lot of work. It takes years to get to it.

“You have to look at opportunistic infections, medicines, suicide.

Most artists exhaust a subject in five minutes and tomorrow will be
in Hawaii.”

But despite the jutting bones, the black clothes, the skin pallor
and the pagan poetry, Diamanda Gala says she’s just a musician. And,
like many, she feels she’s often misunderstood. Not that she cares.

“I think I’m the most lovable individual in the f . . . ing world,”
she says.

“And, in case you’re wondering, I’m not going to go hang myself in
the toilet after this interview.”

* Diamanda Galas performs Guilty, Guilty, Guilty at the Adelaide Town
Hall on October 16 at 8pm. Bookings at BASS.

New Legislation Year Starts

ARINC DRAWS ATTENTION TO CRITICAL DAYS IN TURKEY’S EU BID

ANKARA – Turkish Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc said on Saturday
that Turkey had its most critical days regarding its EU bid, adding
”Europe is being tested for honesty, equity and objectivity. We see
and denounce those who try to impede Turkey’s membership to the EU by
taking some political maneuvers.”

The new parliamentary term started the same day and the parliamentary
general assembly convened under the leadership of Arinc.

Addressing the parliament, Arinc said that Turkey would not cope with
terrorism by restricting freedoms. ”This parliament should give the
best response to terrorism by staying in solidarity,” Arinc said.

Referring to Turkey’s EU bid, Arinc said that the Turkish people had
difficulty in understanding the hypocrisy shown by EU towards Turkey.
Arinc stressed that Turkey was a big state and it had the power to
change some balances, adding that Europe was on the eve of taking an
important decision.

”Europe will either accept our membership, adapt itself to the
change in the world and get stronger or will impede our membership by
looking inwards and loose its impact on world politics. Turkey’s
membership means the integration of the east and the west and the
meeting of civilizations,” Arinc said.

Denouncing the attempt to bring claims like Armenian genocide onto
the agenda prior to Oct. 3rd, Arinc said that the Turkish parliament
would not accept a crime which its ancestors didn’t commit just to be
a member of the European Union.

A LUNCHEON IN HONOR OF HIS HOLINESS ARAM I

“ANTELIAS AND I HAVE BECOME UNITED. ENSURING OUR PEOPLE’S
PRINCIPAL INTERESTS HAS BEEN OUR ONLY PATH”

SAYS HIS HOLINESS ARAM I

A luncheon organized on September 24 in the “Gamk” stadium of the “Armenian
Center” in Montreal in honor of His Holiness Aram I turned into a heartfelt
meeting between the Catholicos and numerous believers.

“Antelias and I have become united. Ensuring our people’s principal
interests has been our only path,” said His Holiness to the believers
gathered in his honor.

Mr. Jean Arakelian, chairman of the board of trustees of the St. Hagop
church, delivered the opening remarks of the luncheon which was dedicated to
the 10th anniversary of His Holiness’ enthronement.

A long time associate of His Holiness Aram I, Dr. Garbis Harboyan, delivered
the lecture of the day, briefly talking about the main aspects of Aram I’s
life and work.

Speaking about the Catholicos’ achievements, Dr. Harboyan said: “Although
ten years is a short period of time, great work has been achieved in the
spiritual, cultural, educational, construction, ecumenical, inter-religious,
political and social service fields.”

“His Holiness’ strong personality and flexible diplomacy brought an
awakening to the Cilician Holy Seat, its Seminary, brotherhood and cultural
mission.”

The speaker highlighted His Holiness’ dedication to his people. He
considered the construction of 70 apartments for newly wed Armenian couples
as well as the extra care shown towards the Azounieh National Sanatorium,
the national house for the elderly and the Birds’ Nest orphanage as examples
of this dedication.

Dr. Harboyan presented His Holiness as a dedicated spiritual leader, a true
intellectual, an inspiring orator, a brave messenger and a prime defender of
the Armenian Cause. In this respect he highlighted the work carried out by
His Holiness Aram I in the international arena for the restoration of the
Armenian nation’s rights.

Mr. Krikor Kouyoumdjian, chairman of the National Committee of the diocese
also welcomed His Holiness. Ara Babian, the Ambassador of Armenia to Canada
congratulated the 10th anniversary of His Holiness’ enthronement on behalf
of the Armenian government.

Prelate of the diocese of Montreal, Archbishop Khajag Hagopian spoke about
His Holiness’ qualities as a leader on the national, ecclesiastical,
political, international, inter-religious and ecumenical levels.

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of His Holiness’ enthronement Rev
Karnig Koyounian of the St. Hagop church prepared a book entitled “Aram I
for the Renewal of Armenian Theological Thought”.

The book presented His Holiness’ contribution to the development of Armenian
theological thought through a comprehensive analysis of the theological
works the Catholicos has published in Armenian, French and English.

His Holiness Aram I expressed satisfaction at the warm welcome he received
at the diocese of Montreal. Upon the request of Prelate Archbishop Hagopian,
His Holiness presented medals of Honor to several Armenians dedicated to
their community in Montreal.

Mrs. Aghavni Eloyan received the “St. Mesrob Mashdots” Medal for her long
time cultural and social activities. Mrs. Bertha Minassian-Heller, one of
the philanthropists of the St. Hagop Church and school, was given the Medal
of “Cilician Knight”.

Dr. Jean Arakelian and Mrs. Azadouhi (mother of philanthropist Mihran
Aghbabian from Laval) also received medals of “Cilician Knighthood”. His
Holiness commended the active work carried out by Primate Archbishop
Hagopian by giving him a special cross for archbishops.

His Holiness then considered the collective efforts of Armenians as the
source of all that was achieved during the past decade.

“The principal and everlasting work for us is service. Our nation grows
through what we give it with dedication and commitment and we grow with our
nation. Our nation is enriched and we become enriched by it,” said His
Holiness.

“I did not work alone during the past years. I have always believed in
collective work. I have never wanted to remain in closed and narrow circles.
I have wanted the same for all our institutions and organizations. We should
open up and come out of narrow circles.”

The luncheon also had its share of entertainment with Nayiri Piloyan leading
erformances by Armenian and Canadian violinists.

Enthusiastic believers made generous donations to the Seminary of the
Catholicosate of Cilicia. Miss Ovsanna Zeitounian and the church’s spiritual
sisters donated $ 5000 each and Mrs. Bertha Heller contributed with $
30,000.

Prominent philanthropists and Cilician Knights Mr. and Mrs. Dikran and
Dianna Hadjetian established a fund of $ 75,000 for the Seminary and donated
$ 25,000 to the St. Hagop School.

The event was concluded with “Cilicia” and “I Veh Partsants”.

The trade-industrial exhibition “Armenia Expo-2005” will be held in
the hall of the Sport-Concert Complex after Karen Demirchyan for three
days. The event is unprecedented as it is the largest ever organized
in independent Armenia.

“The exhibition proves that Armenia has become a regional systematizing
business center”, said head of the Union of Industrialists and
Businessmen Arsen Ghazaryan. The organizers of the exhibition are
elated by the fact that not only the local producers (there are about
62 of them), but also 20 organizations from abroad have represented
their products in the exhibition.

The guests f the exhibition represent 15 countries – Russia, Romania,
Moldova, China, Japan, Great Britain, etc.

By the way, within the framework of the three-day “Expo” an
Armenian-Russian business meeting will be held, and US and China
business days will be organized. Nevertheless, the most important
event for the producers is the competition titled “High quality”.
