Most Likely People Will Elect President Of Turkey

MOST LIKELY PEOPLE WILL ELECT PRESIDENT OF TURKEY

PanARMENIAN.Net
08.05.2007 13:54 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Most likely all citizens and not lawmakers will
elect the President of Turkey. The corresponding provision is included
in the text of a bill offered by the ruling Justice and Development
(AKP) party, which aims at putting an and to the political crises. The
document was supported in the parliament in its first reading on
Monday. However, this dos not mean that it will be approved in its
second reading.

According to the current system, the Parliament elects the President
of the country. But AKP, which is a party based on Islamic ideology,
insists on direct national voting.

Last week the government declared it will hold early parliamentarian
elections aiming at putting and end to the political crises. It
means that the parliament will be dissolved in the near future and
the ruling party tries to carry out constitutional reforms till
that moment. It succeeded in gaining the support of a not numerous
left-central party, however in order to approve the amendments to
the acting Organic Law the Turkish government will need 2/3 majority,
in other words 367 votes.

On Monday 330 lawmakers voted for the document during discussions of
the bill in its first reading. If AKP does not succeed in gathering 367
votes during the second reading, the issue will be put for referendum.

By the way, the current President Ahmed Necdet Sezer has the right
to veto both the amendments and issue of holding referendum. The
bill supposes not only direct national voting but it also cuts
presidential term from seven to five years. At the same time the
acting head of state will have the right to ballot for the second
presidential term. Besides, the legislation offers to cut the term
of parliament from five to four years. The opposition insists that
it is not the time for such changes.

On May 6 opposition secular parties for the second time blocked
current Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul’s election as President of the
country. He was nominated by the ruling Justice and Development party.

Opposition assures he will carry out Islamic policy, which contradicts
secular traditions of Turkey, BBC Russian service reports.

Yerevan: Kramnik and Aronian win their white games

05.05.2007 – The rapid chess match in Yerevan, Armenia, between
Vladimir Kramnik and Levon Aronian began with two exciting,
impressive games. In the first the world champion smashed his
opponent’s Marshall in ground-breaking style, in the second Aronian
outmaneuvered his Russian opponent in a 76-move game. The mood on the
Playchess server was: great games guys, keep it up! Report with
pictures.

The Aronian-Kramnik Rapid Chess Match takes place in Yerevan,
Armenia, from May 4th to 6th, 2007. I goes over six games, played at
the rate of 25 min for the entire game with a increment of 10 seconds
per move. The match will be played over three days, in the Yerevan
Opera House, with the games beginning at 18:00 hrs and 19:45 hrs
local time (GMT + 4). That is 15:00h CEST, 14:00h London and 09:00
a.m. New York for the first game; 16:45h, 15:45h and 10:45 a.m. for
the second. Click on the Yerevan times above to get your own local
time.

Day one report
The first game was a very impressive win by Vladimir Kramnik, who
dealt in world championship style with Levon Aronian’s Marshall
Attack (the official web site calls Aronian a "Marshall revivalist
and asks after this game "What is the future of the Marshall
Attack?"). Kramnik was well prepared for the game and the course it
took, playing the openings moves very rapidly. He selected a rare
line with 19.f3 (it has only been seen twice before in tournament
praxis) and followed the game Bernhaupt-Billaudelle 2004 up to moves
25. The predecessor game had ended in a 31-move draw. Kramnik
improved wonderfully and forced his Armenian opponent to retire after
45 moves.

GUIDE ARTS AROUND THE WORLD

ERMEN, TITRE PROVISOIRE

Pascal Tokatlian was raised in France of Italian and Armenian stock,
but started unravelling strands of family history only as a young
adult. His monologue, performed as part of France’s Year of Armenia,
interweaves direct experience with excerpts from the writings of Aram
Andonian, one of the few intellectuals to survive concentration camps
in Syria and Mesopotamia between 1915 and 1919. Andonian provides
gripping testimony – of tents as far as the eye could see, dead bodies
used as pillows by the dying.

Tokatlian grounds his piece in intimacy, piecing together family
anecdotes, while Gaguik Mouradian’s solo kamantcha is played with
moving restraint.

Tokatlian’s recital of the final segment of Andonian’s memoirs is
compelling: "How long do we have to march?" "Until your bodies can’t
take any more."
