Congressman Adam Schiff Tuesday released a statement commemorating
the twenty-second anniversary of the Sumgait Pogrom, the 3-day
massacre in the winter of 1988 that resulted in the deaths of scores
of Armenians. Below are Rep. Schiff’s full remarks, which will be
entered into the Congressional Record.

"Madam Speaker, this past Sunday marked the twenty-second anniversary
of the pogrom against Azerbaijanis of Armenian descent in the town
of Sumgait, Azerbaijan. The 3-day massacre in the winter of 1988
resulted in the deaths of scores of Armenians, many of whom were
burnt to death after being brutally beaten and tortured. Hundreds
of others were wounded. Women and girls were brutally raped. The
carnage created thousands of ethnic Armenian refugees, who had to
leave everything behind to be looted or destroyed, including their
homes, cars and businesses.

"These crimes, which were proceeded by a wave of anti-Armenian
rallies throughout Azerbaijan, were never adequately prosecuted
by Azerbaijan authorities. Many who organized or participated in
the bloodshed have gone on to serve in high positions on the Azeri
government. For example, in the days leading up to the massacre,
a leader of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan, Hidayat Orujev,
warned Armenians in Sumgait: "If you do not stop campaigning for the
unification of Nagorno Karabakh with Armenia, if you don’t sober up,
100,000 Azeris from neighboring districts will break into your houses,
torch your apartments, rape your women, and kill your children." Orujev
is currently the State Advisor for Ethnic Policy to Azeri President
Heidar Aliyev.

"Despite efforts by the Government of Azerbaijan to cover up the
events of February 1988, survivors of the pogrom have come forward
with their stories. They told of enraged mobs, which threw furniture,
refrigerators, television sets and beds from apartment balconies
and set them afire. Armenians were dragged from their apartments. If
they tried to run and escape, the mob attacked them with metal rods,
knives and hatchets before the victims were thrown into the fire. One
witness said of a victim, "He was still moving, trying to escape from
fire, but five young men were pushing him back into the fire with
metal rods." Others told of Interior Ministry troops, who stood by
doing nothing.

"The Sumgait massacres led to wider reprisals against Azerbaijan’s
ethnic minority, resulting in the virtual disappearance of Azerbaijan’s
450,000-strong Armenian community, and culminating in the war launched
against the people of Nagorno Karabakh. That war resulted in almost
30,000 dead on both sides and created more than one million refugees
in both Armenia and Azerbaijan.

"This April will mark the 95th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide,
a crime that Azerbaijan’s ally and protector Tukey has devoted
enormous political resources to deny. Just as we cannot allow the
first genocide of the Twentieth Century to fade into history, the
memory of the victims of Sumgait must not be forgotten either."

ROBERT FISK: OBAMA DARES NOT TO RECOGNIZE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE LEST HE OFFENDS TURKEY

PanARMENIAN.Net

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ English writer and journalist, Middle East
correspondent of The Independent Robert Fisk shared the impression
of Missak Keleshian’s film about the Armenian Genocide.

"In Beirut Missak Keleshian, an Armenian researcher – actually,
he’s in love with film and photographs and is a technician by trade
– is showing an original archive movie on the Armenian Genocide,"
Mr. Fisk writes.

"It was made by German cameramen in 1918 and 1920. Never before shown.

I sit at the back of the big Armenian hall in the Beirut suburb of
Dbayeh and the camera tracks across a terrible wasteland of dry hills.

Southern Turkey – or western Armenia, depending on your point of view
– just after the 1915 genocide of one and a half million Armenians at
the hands of the Ottoman Turks. And a woman comes into focus. She is
sitting in the muck and holding her child – alive or dead, I cannot
tell. She is weeping and wailing and there before our eyes is the
20th-century’s First Holocaust – which our precious US President
Barack Obama dare not even call a genocide lest he offends Turkey.

Literally moving proof. Later footage shows 20 000 Armenian orphans in
Beirut, 30 000 in Aleppo. Where are their parents? Ask not Obama. In
one extraordinary scene, the orphans of the First Holocaust are
sitting at a breakfast table two miles in length," he goes on.

"I am both mesmerized and appalled. They smile and they laugh at
the camera. Dr Lepsius, a German working for Near East Relief –
how swiftly the good Germans who cared for the Armenians turned into
more dangerous creatures – holds the children in his arms. Outside an
orphanage, other children plead for help. Then there is a picture of an
orphanage run by the Turks in Beirut in 1915, in which the children,
Nazi-style, were "Turkified", given Muslim names to eradicate their
identity. Enough. This will be a big report in The Independent. But
there is a long, panning shot across Beirut. It is Lebanon, 1920;
there are tents for the Armenians but the sweep of film shows the
port. There are steam ships and sailing ships and the long coast
which I see each morning from my balcony."

Plushenko Denies Platinum Claim

Plushenko Denies Platinum Claim

It’s been widely reported that Evgeni Plushenko’s silver medal in Vancouver
apparently isn¹t what he wished for.

On Plushenko¹s personal website his recent accomplishment in ice skating was
listed through February 23 as "Platinum of Vancouver."

But Plushenko¹s agent Ari Zakarian is now denying that the ice skater had
anything to do with it. Zakarian says that "no one had authority to do this
stupid thing,² and Plushenko himself was unaware of it.

The 2006 Winter Olympics gold medalist from Russia continues to deny though
that the true winner of men¹s figure skating in 2010 is American Evan
Lysacek.

The 27-year-old Plushenko is dicing the 24-year-old Lysacek for not
performing a quad jump, which Plushenko says is expected of gold-medal
winners.

The Russians aren’t happy about it. Even Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has
stepped into the fray saying in his congratulatory message to Plushenko that
he should have been awarded gold.

Rivas: `I will do everything to bring `Eurovision 2011′ to Armenia

Eva Rivas: `I will do everything to bring `Eurovision 2011′ to Armenia

2010-02-26
more/id/592117/lang/en

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 26, ARMENPRESS: The Armenian TV round of the
`Eurovision 2010′ international song contest took place February 14.
The winner became Eva Rivas with `Apricot Stone’ song. With the
request of Armenpress E. Rivas referred to the preparatory works for
the `Eurovision’ song contest as well as to other questions.

– Why did you decide to take part in the `Eurovision’ international
song contest and what expectations do you have from it?

– The idea of participation has appeared still in 2009 after the
`Tashir 2009′ annual prize giving ceremony. We were getting prepared
during the whole year, we were searching for corresponding song with
which we would be able to present us to Europe with dignity. Our
choice fell on the `Apricot Stone’ song the authors of which are Karen
Kavaleryan and Armen Martirosyan. From the `Eurovision’ international
song contest I expect only victory!

– As to you, with what the `Apricot Stone’ song may achieve success?

– This song has a humanitarian importance, it will be cordial and will
be accepted not only by the Armenian audience but by the Europeans
too. It has big opportunity to win.

– In what stage are the preparatory works for the `Eurovision’
international song contest?

– Currently works are being carried out to present the song in the
European countries, visits are planned to a number of European
countries where many Armenians live. In the near future we are going
to shoot and present the clip of the song.

– There are opinions that your not enough knowledge of Armenian may be
an obstacle during your meetings with the representatives of the
Armenian community in other countries. Do you work to improve the
knowledge of the Armenian?

– Of course, I have always noted that I am working in that direction.
I know Armenian and I understand it quite well but as far as I am a
maximalist, I do not like presenting to the public partial works. Now
I am not speaking in Armenian fluentl,y but I assure that some time
later I will be able to speak freely.

– During the recent period talks about the unfair contest of the
Armenian round are in the circulation. Will this impede your work?

– I do not think that some groundless gossips may impede my work.
Especially when I hear the sounds of my songs in every corner of our
town, which gives me more enthusiasm to continue working: all the
gossips lose their sense. I have a clear goal and I am doing my best
to bring it into life.

I want to thank our compatriots for their love and warmth. I am
grateful that they believed and trusted me. I assure that I will
present Armenia with dignity and will do everything to bring
`Eurovision 2011′ to Armenia.

Azerbaijan Is Guilty Of Death Of Inhabitants Of Khojaly And Armenian

AZERBAIJAN IS GUILTY OF DEATH OF INHABITANTS OF KHOJALY AND ARMENIAN HOSTAGES KEPT IN KHOJALY, NKR MFA DECLARES

Noyan Tapan
Feb 26, 2010

STEPANAKERT, FEBRUARY 26, NOYAN TAPAN. The anti-Armenian campaign in
connection with the regular anniversary of the tragic events in the
settlement of Khojaly, which has set everybody’s teeth on edge for
a long time, has gained an unprecedented scope this year in Azerbaijan.

It is mentioned in the February 25 statement of the Press Service of
the NKR Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which further read:

"In connection with the insinuations of official Baku, the Press
Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Nagorno Karabakh
Republic considers it necessary to remind that a military operation
was organized on February 25-26, 1992 with the aim of unblocking
the only airport in the Republic situated near the settlement of
Khojaly and neutralizing the fire-points of the enemy just in Khojaly,
from where, beginning from spring 1991, the settlements of Nagorno
Karabakh were regularly attacked by the Azerbaijani OMON-members
and exposed to artillery bombardment, including from "Grad" rocket
launchers weapon of mass destruction (WMD) prohibited by numerous
international conventions.

Fulfilling a vital goal for the Karabakh people, the units of the
NKR self-defense forces, attacking Khojaly, provided a corridor
for the civilians’ safe leaving the military activities zone, about
which the Azerbaijani party was informed beforehand. This fact was
repeatedly confirmed by the Azerbaijani officials, in particular, the
then President Ayaz Mutalibov. But, the Azerbaijani authorities made
nothing for the peaceful population’s withdrawal from the military
activities area. Moreover, a column of civilians was shot down at the
approaches to the Aghdam region’s border, which was later confirmed by
Mutalibov, connecting this criminal act with the opposition’s attempts
to remove him from his position, making him responsible for the events.

The territory, where pictures of numerous corpses were made, is in a
three-kilometer distance from the town of Aghdam and in 11 kilometers
from Khojaly. Up to the summer of 1993, this territory was under
permanent control of the Azerbaijani armed forces, which excluded
any access for the units of the Karabakh self-defense forces.

"The Azerbaijani official propaganda tries to blame Armenians for
the killing of the civil population of Khojaly, but even Azerbaijani
President Mutalibov admitted that "Armenians still provided a corridor
for the civilians’ leaving the place", the Russian Nezavisimaya Gazeta
from April 2, 1992 wrote. Also, Ogonyok journal (#14-15, 1992) noted
that "the attack of Khojaly wasn’t sudden".

Some details of that military operation are still shrouded in mystery,
which is actively speculated by the Azerbaijani state propagandistic
machine, using various falsifications, forgeries, and obvious lie.

Last year, the NKR MFA drew the public attention to the false photo
placed at some Azerbaijani websites, including the one of a generator
of false ideas "The Heydar Aliyev Fund" (). In fact,
the photo related immediately to the events in Kosovo and just as
such, along with numerous others, was introduced at the Serbian,
Albanian, and one of the specialized German forums, at the site of
The New York Times authoritative journal, and others. This year,
new forgeries have been added to the noted one. Thus, about 20 false
photos used by the Azerbaijani party, in particular, those of the
victims of the Kurdish pogroms in Turkey, the victims of the massacre
in Srebrennitsa, and others, were introduced during the February
24 presentation of the project in Yerevan. Besides,
outrageous falsifications were discovered in the lists of the Aghdam
tragedy victims introduced by the Azerbaijani official structures
embassies, the presidential library, etc. Also, the site provides
video-films about the interrogations of the Turks-Meskhetians,
which testify that despite the Armenian party’s warning of the
Khojaly attack, the Azerbaijani servicemen banned the escape of the
Turks-Meskhetians’ families, which were artificially settled there
by the Azerbaijani authorities.

The Azerbaijani propaganda tries to introduce the betrayal of the
Khojaly civilians by their high-rank compatriots as the Armenians’
revenge for the bloody orgy in Sumgait.

But, the remarks and assessments of the Khojaly events by some
Azerbaijani top officials, human rights activists, and journalists
refute flatly the false thesis of official Baku. Thus, Azerbaijani
human rights activist Arif Yunusov wrote: "The town and its citizens
were deliberately made victims of the political goal to prevent the
Azerbaijani Popular Front’s coming to power" (Azerbaijani Zerkalo
newspaper, July 1992).

Tamerlan Karayev, in due time Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the
Azerbaijani Republic (now AR Ambassador to India), testified: "The
tragedy was implemented by the Azerbaijani authorities", specifically
"some of the top officials" (Mukhalifat Azerbaijani newspaper, April
28, 1992).

Heydar Aliyev admitted himself that "the former leadership of
Azerbaijan is also guilty" of the Khojaly events. According to
Bilik-Dunyasi Agency, still in April 1992 he expressed a cynically
monstrous idea: "The bloodshed will do good to us. We shouldn’t
interfere in the course of the events". Did the "father" of Azerbaijan
bear the responsibility for these words?

Czech journalist Yana Mazalova who, by the Azerbaijanis’ oversight,
found herself in both groups of the mass media representatives, which
were shown the "corpses defiled by Armenians", noted a sufficient
difference in the latters’ condition. Visiting the field immediately
after the events, Mazalova didn’t see any traces of barbarity on the
corpses. And two days later, the journalists were shown the disfigured
bodies already "prepared" for filming.

The Russian Megalopolis-Express newspaper wrote: "We cannot but admit
that if the Azerbaijani Popular Front had really far-reaching goals,
so it has achieved them. Mutalibov is compromised and dismissed,
the international community is shocked, the Azerbaijanis and the
friendly Turks believed in the so-called "genocide of the Azerbaijani
population in Khojaly".

As it is known, still on February 26, 47 Armenian hostages were kept
in Khojaly, which is deliberately concealed by the Azerbaijani mass
media. After liberating Khojaly, there were only 13 of them (among
them 6 women and a child), while the rest 34 were taken away in an
unknown direction by the Azerbaijanis. So far, there is no information
about there further fate. We only know that they were taken away from
the village in the operation night, but they didn’t enter Aghdam.

It is evident that those who wanted to make a semblance of the corpses’
defilement by Armenians disfigured, first of all, the bodies of the
Armenian hostages in order that they couldn’t be identified.

Just for this purpose, the majority of the corpses were undressed, and
just for this purpose, the victims’ bodies were exposed to outrages,
which changed them out of all recognition.

Proceeding from the abovementioned facts, we can confidently state
that the Azerbaijani party is guilty of the death of the civilians of
Khojaly and the Armenian hostages kept there, and that the Azerbaijani
party committed a monstrous crime against its own people for the sake
of its political intrigues and struggle for power.

It is already obvious for everybody that the "genocide" of Azerbaijanis
in Khojaly is a myth created still by Heydar Aliyev and taken up by his
throne-successor Aliyev-the-junior in order to draw the international
community’s attention away from the massacre of Armenians in Sumgait,
Baku, Kirovabad, and many other populated-by-Armenians settlements,
as well as to conceal the political, humanitarian, military, economic,
and other penal offences of the Azerbaijani leadership against Armenian
civilians and against its own people".
