ARF Dashnaktsutyun will brief RA President on his position on
Armenian-Turkish relations

25.04.2009 15:54 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ If Yerevan and Ankara truly reached an agreement
over route map, ARF Dashnaktsutyun being a coalition member feels
defrauded, Head of Hay Dat Bureau Kiro Manoyan told a news conference
in Yerevan. Kiro Manoyan stressed that if the route map agreement had
actually been concluded, its contents have to be publicized.

MFA statement did not say the parties actually singed the route map
agreement. Turkish media has already published the route map, which
reminds of a several-points agreement, rather than route map, Manoyan
noted.

According to Kiro Manoyan, Recep Tayyip Erdogan made it clear in his
statements that Turkey will continue negotiations with Armenia but
will not sign any agreement unless NKR issue is settled. This means
Ankara still sets preconditions. `Football diplomacy term will be
completed in October 2009. If Armenian President does not visit the
return football match, it will become clear that Armenian-Turkish
relations are up against a deadlock,’ Hay Dat Bureau Head noted.

On Armenia, Obama seeks the right word

ON ARMENIA, OBAMA SEEKS THE RIGHT WORD

Michael Doyle, McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama yesterday broke a campaign pledge
but mollified Turkey by formally remembering the mass killings of
Armenians without using the diplomatically loaded term "genocide."

In a much-anticipated White House statement, Mr. Obama took note of
the "great atrocities" that occurred in the Ottoman Empire from April
24, 1915, until 1923. While saying 1.5 million Armenians were
"massacred or marched to their death," the president said the most
important thing now was to look ahead.

"I strongly support efforts by the Turkish and Armenian people to work
through this painful history in a way that is honest, open and
constructive," Mr. Obama declared. The president also twice used the
Armenian phrase "meds yeghern," which often is translated as "great
calamity."

The most important part of his statement, though, was the word that
was missing. Armenian-American activists and their political allies
denounced the 389-word statement as a sellout because it didn’t
characterize the events as genocide.

"I am outraged," said Rep. George Radanovich, R-Calif., a co-sponsor
of a congressional Armenian-genocide resolution. "The president chose,
for political reasons, to abandon his commitment to the Armenian
people."

Bryan Ardouny, executive director of the Armenian Assembly of America,
charged that Mr. Obama’s "failure … diminishes U.S. credibility with
regard to genocide prevention," while Armenian National Committee of
America Chairman Ken Hachikian voiced "sharp disappointment" with the
president’s "retreat."

Mr. Obama’s carefully calibrated statement was consistent with the
traditional advice of Pentagon and State Department professionals, who
warn against alienating Turkey. It reversed the promise he made while
seeking Armenian-American votes, however. "As president, I will
recognize the Armenian genocide," Mr. Obama said on his campaign Web
site.

Samantha Power, an Obama adviser and a Pulitzer Prize-winning author,
accentuated the point with a widely viewed YouTube campaign video
addressed to Armenian-Americans. Now a member of the National Security
Council, Ms. Power said then that Mr. Obama would "call a spade a
spade and speak truth" about the historic events.

Once in the White House, however, Mr. Obama became subject to the
broader diplomatic and military considerations that have prompted
presidents before him to retreat from similar promises. Turkey is a
crucial U.S. ally within NATO — bordering Iraq and Iran — and
Turkish officials say the 1915-1923 wartime events remain subject to
interpretation.

In a two-day visit to Turkey earlier this month, Mr. Obama stressed
the important ties between the United States and the strategically
located nation of 78 million people. Turkish officials have warned
consistently that the United States could lose commercial
opportunities and military advantages, which include the use of
Turkey’s busy Incirlik Air Base, if an insulting genocide
commemoration were issued.

"President Obama has sent a clear message to America and the world
that his administration will not sacrifice long-term strategic allies
for short-term political gains," said Lincoln McCurdy, president of
the Turkish Coalition of America.

The Turkish and Armenian governments, with Switzerland as a neutral
mediator, are working to normalize their long-strained
relations. Diplomats have warned against any incendiary U.S. statement
that might interfere with these talks, described in a recent joint
Turkish-Armenian statement as reaching "tangible progress and mutual
understanding."

"I suspect they think they’re making real progress on their dialogue,
and they want to see it completed," said Rep. Jim Costa, D-Calif., a
genocide resolution supporter who serves on the House Foreign Affairs
Committee.

Former Presidents George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush broke similar
pledges. Former President Bill Clinton, too, leaned on congressional
leaders not to pass genocide commemoration measures.

Third Country Close To Panic

THIRD COUNTRY CLOSE TO PANIC

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Caucasus Institute Director, political scientist
Alexander Iskandaryan said it is hard to speak beyond the contents
of the Armenian-Turkish agreement at present.

"The agreement proved that normalization of relations between
two countries is in process. Comments on agreement in Armenia are
motivated more politically than analytically. At the same time,
different third country sources were posting their information on
details of agreement. And that is an indicator of their panic,"
told PanARMENIAN.Net said Armenian expert.

On April 22, Armenia and Turkey agreed on road-map to normalize
ties. The joint statement issued by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs
of Armenia and Turkey said that Turkey and Armenia, together with
Switzerland as mediator, have been working intensively with a view to
normalizing their bilateral relations and developing them in a spirit
of good-neighborliness, and mutual respect, and thus to promoting
peace, security and stability in the whole region.

" The two parties have achieved tangible progress and mutual
understanding in this process and they have agreed on a comprehensive
framework for the normalization of their bilateral relations in a
mutually satisfactory manner. In this context, a road-map has been
identified.

This agreed basis provides a positive prospect for the on-going
process," the statement said.

Opening of the Vienna Vision Center in Gyumri (25.04.09)

Opening of the Vienna Vision Center in Gyumri (25.04.09)

In the Austrian Paediatric hospital in Gyumri a new ophthalmology
division was established at the end of 2007. However, there has been
an insufficient supply of eyeglasses and frames in the area. Families,
provided they can afford it, have to drive more than 120 Km over a
2000 meter high mountain pass to reach the capital city of Yerevan in
order to be able to purchase eyeglasses and frames for their children.

Therefore the idea has been born to set up an optical center attached
to this paediatric hospital, called "Vienna Vision Center", which will
act as a Non-Profit-Organization. This center will cater to the whole
region supplying frames and eyeglasses.

Through this project following individuals in the region of Shirak
will receive the eyeglasses (including the glasses) free of charge:

All children up to age of 18
Students of university of Gyumri
Persons at compulsory military service
Handicapped and disabled people regardless of their age
Persons under family chart carrying "social passport" of more than 36
points The project was initiated in 2007 through Family Maghakian in
Vienna, Austria and financed by donations and technical support from
Austria, Germany, USA, Syria, Lebanon and UAE. It is acting under
Vienna Vision Charitable fund, of which the boards of trustee consists
of 4 Diaspora Armenians and 3 Armenia residents. In the first three
months of 2009 the center had already distributed more than 400 frames
(including glasses)."

BIPARTISAN SUPPORT FOR ARMENIAN GENOCIDE RESOLUTION GROWS, COSPONSORS
REACH 100

Washington, DC – "H. Res. 252, the Armenian Genocide Resolution, has
crossed a threshold with the bi-partisan support of 100 cosponsors,
reported the Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly). "Reaffirmation of
the Armenian Genocide took another step forward today," stated Assembly
Executive Director Bryan Ardouny. "As we mark Genocide Prevention Month
throughout April and the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide on April
24, support continues to build for unequivocal U.S. affirmation. By
affirming the Armenian Genocide, we further the cause of genocide
prevention," added Ardouny.

H. Res. 252, a congressional resolution which reaffirms the historical
record of the United States on the Armenian Genocide, was modeled after
H. Res. 106, which passed the House Committee on Foreign Affairs during
the 110th Congress. H. Res. 252, was introduced by Reps. Adam Schiff
(D-CA), George Radanovich (R-CA) and Congressional Caucus on Armenian
Issues Co-Chairmen Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Mark Kirk (R-IL).

In January, the Assembly launched a website,
ArmenianGenocideAffirmation.com, dedicated to U.S. affirmation of the
Armenian Genocide. The website affords visitors the opportunity to send
a letter to President Barack Obama or their respective Member of
Congress, view the current list of all H. Res. 252 co-sponsors, join the
Assembly’s facebook group or become an Ambassador of Affirmation, as
well as view its latest video messages.

Established in 1972, the Armenian Assembly of America is the largest
Washington-based nationwide organization promoting public understanding
and awareness of Armenian issues. The Assembly is a 501(c) (3)
tax-exempt membership organization.

Brad Pitt – Doesn’t Believe In Birth Control?

BRAD PITT – DOESN’T BELIEVE IN BIRTH CONTROL?

Examiner.com
April 21 2009

Brad only uses the withdraw method Brad Pitt, who claims he has
questioned religion in many interviews, believes that birth control is
going against God’s wishes, according to a former friend. "Believe
me, Brad has discounted many of the religious beliefs that were
taught to him. However, he still doesn’t feel comfortable about birth
control. The withdraw method has been very successful for him," the
former friend continues. "If he doesn’t withdraw on time, then it’s
up to God if a new baby will be born into this world."

This currently explains the much rumored conflict between Angelina
and him as of lately. It is highly believed that Angelina Jolie is
pregnant again and this was definitely not planned, since both of them
plan to adopt again soon. Even though their adoption in the Philippines
didn’t work out, the couple have now set their sites on Armenia.

I guess Brad and Angelina can do whatever they want. However, I think
safe sex is very important in this day and age. I hope that even if
Angelina’s baby is a "mistake," this child will still be welcomed
into this world and will not be referred to as a blob like Angie and
Brad’s other biological kid.

ICG KEEPS ON GENERATING IDEAS CLAIMING THAT ARMENIAN-TURKISH BORDER WILL BE OPENED IN OCTOBER

ArmInfo

ArmInfo. The possible term of opening of the Armenian-Turkish border
is October, 2009, when president of Armenia visits Turkey, Director
of the European Programmes of the International Crisis Group (ICG)
Sabina Freiser said, Radio Liberty reports.

According to her, Ankara is rather seriously involved in the
negotiation process with Armenia and shows interest in normalization
of the relations.

This process started not yesterday as the negotiations between Yerevan
and Ankara have been passing in different formats for many years,
primarily, in a secret format in Switzerland. Having touched on the
issue of possible recognition of the Armenian Genocide by US president,
S. Freiser said if Barack Obama says a word Genocide on April 24,
it will negatively affect the results of negotiations on settlement
of the Armenian-Turkish relations.

As S. Freiser said, it is unnecessary for the USA or France to
interpret the history of Turkey. According to her, the authorities
and the public opinion of Turkey are able to draw such conclusions
by themselves. She emphasized that adoption of any resolutions at
present may have only a negative affect as this will strengthen the
positions of the Turkish nationalists being strongly against any
display of the Genocide recognition.
