Dashnaktsutiun Demands Orinats Yerkir’s Seats From Kocharyan

DASHNAKTSUTIUN DEMANDS ORINATS YERKIR’S SEATS FROM KOCHARYAN

Dashnaktsutiun is said to claim the offices of the minister of
education and culture and the governor of Gegharkunik region,
formerly occupied by members of the Orinats Yerkir Party. After
Arthur Baghdasaryan’s resignation Stepan Barseghyan, the governor of
Gegharkunik region, resigned too. The minister of education and science
Sergo Yeritsyan rejected the party like the other ministers of the
Orinats Yerkir Party, however it is not likely that he will keep the
office. Kocharyan is said to have accepted Dashnaktsutiun’s claims in
return for “something”, we could not find out what. This may be related
to taking certain steps against the Orinats Yerkir Party in the future,
however. On the other hand, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation
(Dashnaktsutiun) badly needs the educational sphere to stay in the
parliament and to maintain their status in the next parliamentary
election. The arrangement between Kocharyan and Dashnaktsutiun is
said to have been disapproved by Serge Sargsyan and the Republican
Party, however.

Boxing: Armenian keeps IBF title

Armenian keeps IBF title

ZWICKAU, Germany – Armenia’s Arthur Abraham retained the IBF
middleweight title Saturday in a rousing 12-round brawl with Kofi
Jantuah.

On the same card, Germany’s Markus Beyer retained the WBC super
middleweight title against Australian Sakio Bika when a head butt
stopped the fight.

The fight was ruled a technical draw after Bika’s fourth round head
butt opened a cut under the German’s right eye and it swelled shut.

About 4,000 spectators gave Abraham, 21-0 with 17 knockouts, a
standing ovation after the action-filled fight. He was awarded a
115-112, 116-111, 117-109 decision against Jantuah, who lives in Las
Vegas.

Jantuah (30-3, 19 knockouts) was staggered numerous times from the
fifth round on and looked as if he was going down in the 11th when
Abraham buckled his knees with a left, but never stopped pressing the
fight.

Abraham kept trying to knock him out, even in the 12th, when he had a
big lead to protect.

Bika rattled Beyer with a short left uppercut, then chased him around
the ring. The German tagged him with some hard lefts beforehand and
recovered to put him into the ropes just before the bell.

Beyer entered the fight 34-2 with 13 knockouts, while Bika was 20-1
with 13 knockouts.

– In Sheffield, England, Clinton Woods stopped Jason DeLisle in the
sixth round to retain his IBF light-heavyweight title in his second
defense.

Parliament Chairman Explains Why He Resigns

PARLIAMENT CHAIRMAN EXPLAINS WHY HE RESIGNS

YEREVAN, MAY 12, ARMENPRESS: Parliament chairman
Arthur Baghdasarian who said he will resign and who
has pulled out his Orinats Yerkir from the governing
coalition, told a news conference today his party will
be in opposition to the authorities but he said they
would go their own path.
Baghdasarian described his decision to resign,
prompted in all likelihood by mass exodus of
businessmen-lawmakers from his party, as ‘a moral
decision,” saying all members of his party who hold
government positions must follow his example. He said
it was the decision of the party’s governing board.
“Anyone who will try to retain his post will be
expelled form the party,’ Baghdasarian said.
Baghdasarian explained his resignation by a set of
‘very serious’ disagreements between his party and the
other two members of the governing coalition-the
Republican party of prime minister Margarian and the
Armenian Revolutionary Federation.
“After protracted debates over whether we should
remain in the coalition or quit it we decided in favor
of the second,’ he said. Baghdasarian divided the
disagreements into three groups- political or
social-economic, democracy reforms and foreign policy
priorities. Baghdasarian said his party would continue
to advocate what he described as ‘decentralization of
power and businesses,” saying also consistent efforts
to seek closer integration with Europe, including
building up closer ties with NATO, must become a
foreign policy priority.
Baghdasarian, however, added that this policy line
should not affect Armenia’s friendly relations with
Russia and denied rumors that pulling out from
coalition was part of an engineered scheme to divert
attention from the Karabakh conflict. “In my opinion
talks over the Karabakh conflict are very
constructive. I think Armenia’s position is very
constructive,” he said.

ANKARA: Turkish Intellectuals Send Letter To French Liberation

Turkish Intellectuals Send Letter To French Liberation Newspaper

ISTANBUL – A group of Turkish intellectuals have sent a letter to the
French Liberation Newspaper marking their disappointment with a
French parliamentary resolution that bans anyone from saying that the
”Armenian genocide” did not take place and punishes those that say
so.
The letter signed by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Insel, Prof. Dr. Baskin Oran,
Prof. Dr. Halil Berktay, Prof. Dr. Murat Belge, Muge Gocek, Elif
Safak, Etyen Mahcupyan, Hrant Dink and Ragip Zarakolu will appear in
tomorrow’s Liberation Newspaper.

The letter said ”when two different national memories start to
perceive same event oppositely, this polarization only strengthens
monologues; France is a country which must know this situation very
well. People instinctively support the ones with identical thoughts.
We have to overcome bringing Turks and Armenians to opposite sides in
a vicious circle and instead generate a dialogue and mutual history
by mutually conveying two memories to each other. We can reach this
goal only with freedom of expression and discussion and free movement
of all information.”

Viktor Soghomonyan: NA Chairman’s resignation will not result in a

`RA President Robert Kocharyan responds calmly to the fact of
secession of the `Orinats Yerkir’ Party from the coalition, as well as
the resignation of the Chairman of the National Assembly,’ President’s
Press Secretary Viktor Soghomonyan declared.

Commenting on the latest events around `Orinats Yerkir,’ Viktor
Soghomonyan said, `Change of the composition of the coalition is
common for any civilized country. In this case nothing extraordinary
occurred, moreover if we consider that there certain disagreement
existed within the coalition and these would naturally sharpen even
more in the preelection period, which we observed during the last
month. At the same time we are confident that the occurred will not
lead to a political crisis. The `divorce’ took place in a civilized
atmosphere. The Republican Party and the Armenian Revolutionary
Federation continue to work in the framework of the political
memorandum. After the changes resulting from the situation both the
Government and the National Assembly will continue to work normally,’
President’s Press Secretary said.

The term “rabbit ears” may bring to mind television in the B.C.
(before cable) era, but a brand-new electronic bunny adjusts its
own ears. Arriving this month from the French company Violet, the
Nabaztag Wi-Fi Smart Rabbit is a nine-inch talking pet that hops onto
your home network to read the news, weather, text messages and more.

It can even signal by moving its ears.

“The idea was to create a new generation of stuff completely
independent of the PC,” said Rafi Haladjian, a founder of
Violet. So why a bunny? “The best object is one that has nothing
to do with technology, and the rabbit seemed good,” Mr. Haladjian
said. Nabaztag – Armenian for rabbit – will be available next week
from for $150.

Nabaztag needs just a wireless network and a power outlet. Owners can
set up its actions at Other free Nabaztag services
include wake-up calls and alerts about e-mail messages. A subscription
($15 for three months) lets the bunny handle things like R.S.S. feeds.
