WATERTOWN, Mass. — Margarita Avetian started painting at the age of 85. Two years later, her vibrant paintings are now on display in her first art exhibition at the Watertown Free Public Library. The exhibit, entitled “Margarita’s Garden,” had its opening reception on Sunday.

Born in 1935, Avetian was the second oldest child born to a mother orphaned during the Armenian Genocide and raised by an aunt after surviving and arriving in Armenia. Avetian helped with her siblings’ upbringing beginning at age five with the start of World War II, forgoing her own education. Her daughter Seda Matevosian told the Weekly that even at that young age, her mother used to go out to the fields and gather whatever she could to help feed the family. The family immigrated to Georgia when Avetian was 12 years old.

Avetian married at a young age, having her first child at 17 years old. Sadly, her husband passed away at the young age of 50. She raised six children and ultimately settled with her family in Watertown. Now, she also enjoys spending time with her seven grandchildren.

After the 2020 war in Artsakh, Avetian’s daughters were concerned about their mother’s mental health and encouraged her to take up painting. “She was hooked and inspired,” enthused Matevosian, who is an artist and an art teacher. “My mom’s work is in the tradition of naïve art and is filled with light, tranquility, peace and simple beauty!”

Matevosian shared that it all began with a paint night she organized in her home for the women in the family. “That was the first time she touched painting,” Matevosian said of her mother. “That night, everyone did a beautiful job, but even then, my mom’s work was different. She followed her own style, creating a unique piece,” she reflected.

After organizing another paint night at her mother’s building with her neighbors, it became evident that Avetian’s work set her apart from the others. When Matevosian shared some of her mother’s art on social media, it received rave reviews, and even some comparisons to American folk artist Grandma Moses, who started painting when she was 78 years old.

“I have no formal training in art,” said Avetian. “To my surprise, it has helped me partially heal the wounds of my world. I mainly paint flowers, because I’ve always admired the beauty of each species, and they represent the fragility of life to me.”

Avetian starts a painting by filling the background with color and then focusing on the intricacy of the leaves and flowers. “I get lost in the creative process and forget about the harsh reality we live in,” she said. “When I paint, I feel inner peace and believe that one day beauty will and should save the world!”

Her art and this exhibition in Watertown are dedicated to the heroes who bravely sacrificed their lives to protect the homeland and the loved ones they left behind. Avetian is donating the proceeds to benefit the wounded soldiers of the 2020 war.

She was gratified to sell six paintings at the opening reception and was overwhelmed with emotion as people viewed and admired her work. “Art has healing power,” Avetian said. “I’ll be happy if my paintings resonate the same feelings in the viewers as mine while I’m creating them – happiness, peace and love towards each other and everything around us.”

“Margarita’s Garden” will be on display at the T. Ross Kelly Family Gallery at the Watertown Free Public Library, located at 123 Main Street, until March 31.

Nagorno Karabakh authorities release details on latest talks with Azerbaijan

YEREVAN, MARCH 3, ARMENPRESS. The authorities of Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) released details on the latest meeting with the Azerbaijani side which took place on March 1.

The Security Council of Artsakh issued a statement on Friday regarding the meeting. It said that Secretary of the Security Council Samvel Shahramanyan led the talks.

“We inform that in accordance with the decision made at the session of the Security Council of the Republic of Artsakh on February 28, 2023, a working group has been established, the purpose of which is to discuss URGENT humanitarian issues with the Azerbaijani side.

The head of the group is Samvel Shahramanyan, Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Artsakh.

In accordance with the agreement reached through mediation of the command staff of the peacekeeping troops of the Russian Federation deployed in the Republic of Artsakh, on March 1, 2023, at 11 a.m., a meeting was held at the headquarters of the peacekeeping mission with participation of the commander of the troops, Major General Andrey Volkov, which was attended by a similar working group formed by the Republic of Azerbaijan, headed by Ramin Mammadov, member of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan.

The following issues were on the meeting agenda:

  1. Ensuring uninterrupted supply of natural gas to the Republic of Artsakh and excluding further disruption of the gas supply;
  2. Ensuring the possibility of inspecting the section of the only high-voltage line entering Artsakh from the Republic of Armenia, which is under the control of the Azerbaijani armed forces, in order to carry out restoration works by the specialists of "Artsakh Energy" CJSC and restore the electricity supply to the Republic of Artsakh;
  3. Conducting an one-time visual tour by an Azerbaijani specialized group on the territories of Kashen and Drmbon mines;
  4. Complete opening of the Stepanakert-Goris highway.

In the opening remarks, the commander of the peacekeeping troops presented the participants of the meeting as parties of the Republic of Artsakh and the Republic of Azerbaijan. After that, the head of the Artsakh group clarified to the Azerbaijani side the powers of the group he leads, that is the discussion of the above-mentioned specific issues and finding solutions on them.

At the beginning of the discussions, the head of the Azerbaijani group tried to lead the conversation towards the need for integration of Artsakh people with Azerbaijan, presenting prospects of obtaining possible socio-economic benefits in that case. However, the head of the Artsakh group called for discussion on clearly defined issues. The latter also emphasized that these contacts on urgent humanitarian and infrastructural issues cannot address the main issues of comprehensive settlement of the conflict, and for this it is necessary to establish a format with broad international support.

It should be noted that the other members of the Azerbaijani group were engaged in the discussion of the above-mentioned four specific issues and the search for solutions, accordingly, the subsequent course of the meeting was fully complied with the framework defined by the agenda.

As a result of the discussion of all the above-mentioned issues, specific agreements were reached, which the Azerbaijani side undertook to report to the higher authorities, and in the coming days to inform the Artsakh side about the results through the peacekeeping mission.

During the meeting, an agreement was reached on establishment of the stable two-way communication mechanism between the parties.

At the meeting, the parties agreed to publish only general information for the time being, given that the process is still in the working stage. However, shortly after the meeting, the head of the Azerbaijani group gave interviews on various information platforms of his country, in which he spread disinformation, completely deviating from the actual content and process, in particular announcing that the meeting discussed "issues of the reintegration of the Armenian population of the Karabakh region into Azerbaijan." Unfortunately, some representatives of the Armenian media took this trick of Azerbaijani officials and media, thereby creating a false impression that issues related to the comprehensive settlement of the conflict are allegedly being discussed in Artsakh-Azerbaijani contacts. Meanwhile, as we mentioned, the meeting on March 1, in which the commander of the Russian peacekeeping troops participated as well, was dedicated only to the discussion of steps aimed at lifting the blockade of Artsakh and relating issues.

Another misinformation of Azerbaijan, according to which the next meeting of the official representatives of the parties "may take place in Ganja or Aghdam" and without the participation of the Russian peacekeeping troops, is without substance as well.

We urge the public not to succumb to the fabrications of the Azerbaijani propaganda machine and to be sure that the public will be given exhaustive information about the above-mentioned process and its results,” the statement reads.

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 15, ARMENPRESS. The co-founder and CEO at Wakie Hrachik Adjamian unveiled his new startup – b4.

b4 (before you meet) is designed to solve the absence of personal communication between participants during online events.

Described as the “new ultimate networking tool”, b4 allows you to get matched with other participants of an event, have a quick look at their info such as their company, specialties, experiences, and proceed to a voice talk if interested, among others.

“After the COVID-19 pandemic everything became online, a new market emerged, many products designed for online events and meetings were created. People value interaction while participating in nearly all meetings, but they say that the quality and experience is poor in the case of online meetings. We decided to offer a solution that would give people this value of interaction in the online option as well. After a lot of research, we found the required model,” Adjamian told ARMENPRESS in an interview.

b4 allows you to use event-specified ice-breaker questions to make your talk even better and easily build your own network circle and keep in touch with every partner you have talked to.

One of the problems in conferences is that many people are introverts and find it difficult to approach someone they don’t know. The app offers a solution for this too.

“Offline meetings attract people, but online ones don’t. We plan to develop this direction and make it interesting, and we know what is needed for this. There’s a lot of need to interact with people in business. People need people. We must develop and become that solution. There’s Google, and now also chatGPT, which gives answers to all your questions, but in any case people will always have the desire to interact with others. We must solve this problem. We’re starting from this now, but we have a higher mission,” Adjamian said.

b4 was founded just a few months ago but already garnered pre-seed investment. The startup hasn’t yet officially entered the market but it has been used to organize around 30 events.

CSTO Secretary-General Arrives in Armenia as Putin Calls for ‘Restraint’

Stanislav Zas is the CSTO Secretary-General

Security Leader’s Visit Comes as Yerevan has Voiced Growing Unhappiness with CSTO

Stantilav Zas, the Secretary-General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization—the CSTO—arrived in Armenia on Tuesday leading a delegation that will “assess the situation” following last week’s attack on Armenia’s sovereign territory by Azerbaijani forces.

Meanwhile, President Vladimir Putin of Russia called on the sides to demonstrate “restraint” and “strictly adhere to the ceasefire agreement,” which stopped the fighting, despite continued tensions on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border.

The CSTO said in a statement that the objective of Zas’ visit is to assess the situation, prepare a report for leaders of the Russia-led security group’s member-states and develop proposals for de-escalation of tensions on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border.

“Over the course of the mission, actions related to studying and monitoring the current situation in border regions are planned, as well as meetings with the highest political and military leadership of the Republic of Armenia,” added the CSTO statement.

In his statement, Putin said that measures were being taken through the CSTO to reduce the escalation between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“I want to note that, through the CSTO, measures are being taken over the escalation of the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. A special mission led by the CSTO Secretary General [Chief of CSTO Joint Staff] has been sent to the conflict zone. He was tasked to prepare proposals to the CSTO Security Council based on the results of the monitoring of the situation,” Putin said.

Calling the tensions on the Armenia-Azerbaijan borders a “territorial dispute,” Putin urged the two countries to engage in the delimitation and demarcation process of the borders.

“I want to state that any conflict between the countries close to us is of a serious concern. We call on everyone to exercise restraint, strictly observe the ceasefire and firmly follow the trilateral statements of the leaders of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan,” Putin said.

In separate statement on the occasion of Armenia’s Independence anniversary, Putin called Armenia Russia’s “closest friend and strategic ally.”

Zas’ visit to Yerevan comes after another fact-finding mission led by CSTO Chief of Staff Colonel-General Anatoly Sidorov, who was briefed on the Azerbaijani attacks, toured the border region and was shown proof of Azerbaijan deliberate targeting the Russian border checkpoint in Syunik.

On the first day of his visit, Sidorov unequivocally said that the CSTO would not be sending peacekeeping forces to Armenia “not now, not tomorrow not ever.”

After the September 13 attacks on its sovereign soil by Azerbaijan, Armenia, a CSTO member-state, appealed to the security body to utilize the organization’s protocols and provided assistance.

On Friday, Armenia’s National Security Chief Armen Grigoryan expressed dissatisfaction about the CSTO’s response, especially since Armenia sent in military forces to Kazakhstan earlier this year. That country had requested, and swiftly received, assistance when anti-government protests turned violent.

Grigoryan told Azatutyun.am’s Armenian Service that Yerevan sought the CSTO’s “military and military-political assistance” that would help it drive Azerbaijani forces out of its territory.

“That was our demand to the CSTO,” Grigoryan said. “Up until now it has not been fulfilled. So in this regard, [the CSTO response] cannot satisfy us.”
