Relatives of missing, captured soldiers block Baghramyan avenue

Panorama, Armenia
Dec 8 2021

Relatives of missing and captured Armenian soldiers have  blocked the central Baghramyan avenue, following the protest action outside the government building held earlier on Wednesday. As a result of their actions a huge traffic jam has been formed at the scene.

To remind, since yesterday, the families of captured soldiers have been voicing their anger over the comments of National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan about prisoners of war (POWs). Simonyan came under fire after calling Armenian POWs held in Azerbaijan deserters. In a scandalous video recording which emerged online on Tuesday, he can be heard saying that many of them “laid down their arms, ran away and got lost”, ending up in captivity. “Those POWs don’t exist for me anymore,” he said.

To note, later today a Q/A session is planned at the National Assembly with Nikol Pashinyan in attendance. The National Assembly is located on Baghramyan avenue, and Pashinyan's visit is usually accompanied by deployment of large police forces forces.

Armenia urges Azerbaijan to refrain from provocative rhetoric and actions – Statement of MFA

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 10, ARMENPRESS. The Republic of Armenia calls on the Republic of Azerbaijan to refrain from provocative rhetoric and actions, not to hinder the efforts to establish peace and stability in the region, ARMENPRESS reports reads the statement issued by the MFA Armenia.

According to the statement, the armed provocations carried out by the Azerbaijani side along the entire Armenian-Azerbaijani border take place on daily basis.

“On December 10, as a result of a regular provocation Vahe Manaseryan, serviceman of the Armed Forces of Armenia, has been killed, another 8 have been injured.

Expressing deep condolences to the family of the killed serviceman, wishing a speedy recovery to the wounded servicemen, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia condemns the provocative actions of Azerbaijan, states that they are planned and are aimed at continuing to aggravate the situation in the region.

This claim is based on the fact that Azerbaijan is constantly developing the absurd rhetoric of the so-called "Zangezur Corridor", which contradicts the trilateral statements of November 9, 2020, January 11, 2021 and November 26 agreements reached in Sochi, and is an open _expression_ of aspirations towards the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia”, reads the statement.

Noting that the units of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan illegally invaded the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia in May this year, occupying an area of more than 40 square kilometers, the Armenian MFA noted that the incident of December 10 took place in one of those areas.

“To date, Azerbaijan has not responded to the proposal of the Republic of Armenia on the simultaneous withdrawal of troops, which was handed over to the Azerbaijani side on November 26 in a written form.

The Republic of Armenia draws the attention of its main security partner Russian Federation, the CSTO, the UN Security Council, the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chair countries to the above-mentioned facts, as well as on the fact that official Baku continues to make clear threats of use of force against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Armenia with belligerent statements, violating the basic principles of international law, including the UN Charter, endangering regional and global security”, reads the statement of the MFA Armenia, adding that the Republic of Armenia calls on the Republic of Azerbaijan to refrain from provocative rhetoric and actions, not to hinder the efforts to establish peace and stability in the region.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia thinks that one of the ways to avoid further aggravation of the situation may be the simultaneous withdrawal of troops from the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and the launch of an international monitoring mechanism along the border.

Asbarez: Sen. Bob Dole, A Staunch Supporter of Armenians, Passes Away

Ambassador Varuzhan Nersesyan after presenting Bob Dole with Armenia's Order of Honor in 2019

Bob Dole, a Republican Senator from Kansas who rose to become Majority Leader and later nominated as the Republican Party presidential candidate in 1996, passed away on Sunday. He was 98.

His affinity for Armenians and the Armenian cause came from Dr. Hampar Kelikian, who helped Dole recover from serious injuries during World War II. Kelikian shared the story of his family who experienced unfathomable horrors during the Armenian Genocide.

Dole became a staunch advocate for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and in February 1990 fought for the passage of a resolution, which would ultimately not pass, due to a filibuster by Virginia Democrat Robert Byrd.

“For the one million Armenians in this country, the wounds have been open for almost 75 years, and the hurt is not going to be able to heal because the world has not faced up to the truth of the suffering of the Armenian people in this period of 1915-1923…because the world stood by and did nothing,” Dole said on the Senate floor during the debate on the resolution in 1990.

“Dole had planted a seed and finally lived to see the House of Representatives, Senate, and the Executive Branch end the longest-lasting foreign gag rule in American history and dealing a major setback to Turkey’s century-long obstruction of justice for this crime against humanity,” said the Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region in a tribute posted on the organization’s social media platforms on Sunday.

Dole hailed President Joe Biden’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide this year, calling it a pound moment for the United States.

“I’m very pleased that he [President Biden] has officially recognized the Armenian genocide. This is a proud and historically significant moment for the United States, for Armenia, and for Armenians around the globe. It’s been a long time coming,” Dole said.

He and his wife, Elizabeth, who would later become the president of the American Red Cross, traveled to Armenia in 1989 and assessed the damage of the devastating earthquake.

Mere weeks before last year’s 44-Day War, Armenia’s then Ambassador to the United States Varuzhan Nersesyan signed an agreement with the law firm Alston & Bird, where Dole would assist Armenia in building a strategic partnership with the United States.

In December 2019, Nersesyan presented Dole with Armenia’s Order of Honor medal for his unwavering commitment to Armenia and the Armenian people.

“America lost a worthy son and soldier, and the Armenian people lost their great and loyal friend, who was closely connected with us, Armenians, and was always by our side, especially during trying times,” President Armen Sarkissian said in a tribute to Dole on Monday.

“After the devastating earthquake of 1988, Robert Dole visited Armenia and played an indisputable role in the organization of US humanitarian aid to our country. His efforts to recognize the Armenian Genocide are also invaluable,” said Sarkissian said, adding that “Mr. Dole’s the memory will always be bright in our hearts.”

Masdar signs Armenia PV deal

26 November 2021: Masdar has signed an agreement with the government of Armenia to develop a 200MW solar PV plant, which will be Armenia’s largest utility-scale solar plant.

The Ayg-1 project will be developed on a design, finance, build, own, and operate basis and the project company will be 85% owned by Masdar, with government-owned investment vehicle the Armenian National Interests Fund (ANIF) holding 15%.

In July, the Armenian government announced that Masdar was the winning bidder for the project, having submitted a tariff of US$0.0290/kWh in a competitive process.

“We expect the signing of this document to mark the start of a fruitful and lasting cooperation on this and for new upcoming projects,” said Gnel Sanosyan, Armenia’s minister of territorial administration and infrastructure.

TotalEnergies completes its largest solar project in France

: TotalEnergies has launched its largest solar PV plant in France, with a capacity of 55MW that will produce around 64GWh per year.

The solar farm, located in Loiret, comprises 126,000 modules spread over 75 hectares. It was designed and built through participative financing that saw local residents invest in the project and a plan put in place to protect the region’s biodiversity.

“This commissioning contributes to France’s energy transition and is a further step towards our goal of reaching 4GW of renewable generation capacity by 2025. It reinforces our commitment to be a major player in renewable energy in France,” said Thierry Muller, CEO of TotalEnergies Renewables France.

Shikun & Binui adds to its US portfolio

23 November 2021: Shikun & Binui (S&B) has acquired all the rights for the development of the 260MWdc (200MWac) Brazoria West Solar project in Texas from Savion, which is part of Macquarie’s Green Investment Group.

Construction of the project began in Q2 2021, with commercial operations expected to start in Q3 2022. The plant, which will supply power to the Houston area, has already signed one commercial and industrial (C&I) power purchase agreement (PPA) and another PPA with an energy trading company.

The acquisition marks the fourth renewable asset investment S&B has made in the US, following investments in Beacon II and Beacon V PV projects in 2020 and a 49% share in the Saticoy Battery Storage Project earlier this year, both located in California.
