YEREVAN, MARCH 20, ARMENPRESS. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is holding a meeting with Director of the National Security Service Eduard Martirosyan and Police Chief Arman Sargsyan. The meeting is broadcast live on PM’s Facebook page.

“I want to congratulate you on your appointments. After new appointments it’s an accepted practice in Armenia to introduce the new officials to their staffs, but today I decided to change that format”, Pashinyan said, adding that two reasons stand behind that decision.

“Firstly, I already introduced you to your staffs when you were serving as acting chiefs of your agencies. And secondly, given the current state of emergency in the country due to the coronavirus I avoided conducting an action out of the common logic”, he said.

Pashinyan thanked those NSS and Police officers who are assisting these days the healthcare ministry and doctors to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

On March 19 President Armen Sarkissian signed decrees on appointing Eduard Martirosyan NSS Director, and Arman Sargsyan – Police Chief. The president signed the respective decrees based on the PM’s proposal.

On March 16 Armenia declared a 30-day state of emergency to fight against the spread of the novel coronavirus. The state of emergency is effective until April 14, at 17:00. As of now, the total number of the confirmed cases is 136, one patient has recovered.

RSF plans no more statements about Armenia yet

Yerevan /Mediamax/. Reporters Without Borders (Reporters sans frontières – RSF) has told Mediamax that it does not plan to make a statement yet about the restrictions on freedom of information imposed in Armenia for the duration of the state of emergency. RSF has tweeted about the issue, but no new remarks followed.

In the tweet, posted on March 16, RSF criticized the Armenian government’s ban on use of other sources of information about the spread of coronavirus other than official data, adding that “controlling information doesn’t help to fight epidemic but spread rumors and fear”. The organization has not mentioned the issue on the official website.

Mediamax contacted RSF on March 19 to find out if it intended to add anything on the topic or take any relevant action and if RSF was aware that a number of Armenian media outlets issued statements regarding the ban.

RSF Editor-in-chief, Spokesperson Pauline Adès-Mével has replied:

“At this stage we are not planning to publish a press release, we continue to monitor the situation with coronavirus throughout the world and could mention Armenia’s decision regarding the posts. But nothing planned immediately.”

Prelacy Armenian Schools In-Person Classes Suspended

Board of Regents of Prelacy Armenian Schools

Online Classes to be Offered

GLENDALE—The Board of Regents of Prelacy Armenian Schools has released a statement announcing the closure of its campuses after Thursday’s classes as a precaution for the Coronavirus pandemic. Instruction will resume online or through alternative modalities beginning Wednesday, March 18.

A letter was sent to faculty, staff, students, and parents announcing that, although there are no known confirmed cases in our community, the coronavirus situation in our country and our community is developing quickly. The World Health Organization has declared this a global pandemic. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution and following the advice of public health and medical experts, the Board of Regents in collaboration with school principals and preschool directors, made the decision to close our campuses after today’s classes until Friday, March 27. The need to extend the closures will be re-evaluated as the situation develops and additional information becomes available. Furthermore, all extracurricular, co-curricular, athletic, and club activities will also stop until further notice.

The Board understands the disappointment and difficulties it may cause to parents, faculty, staff, and students. However, by being proactive and implementing such community wide measures, we are doing our part to limit the spread of the coronavirus. Lisa Gaboudian, Chairperson of the Board of Regents stated, “We are confident that this is the right decision for our students, our families, and the greater community. We understand that the closures of the schools on short notice may create complications for our families. The Board of Regents stands ready to help in whatever way we can during this unsettling time.”
Over the next few days each individual School will email students and parents with additional details.

The Prelacy Armenian School system is governed by the Board of Regents, which is given its full powers of organization and governance by the Western Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America. The Board of Regents aspires to provide students with a rigorous educational curriculum while preserving and enhancing the Armenian heritage and culture by emphasizing the study of the Armenian language, history, and religion.

Alexei Miller: DataArt Armenia is part of our common success

iTel.am, Armenia

Alexei Miller, managing director of financial, healthcare, tourism, media and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions provider DataArt, paid a visit to the company’s Yerevan office in the framework of his trip to Armenia on March 9.

He has told Itel.am about the company and his impressions from the trip.

***
I co-founded DataArt, a company whose story began 22 years ago. I live and work in New York, and this is my second visit to Yerevan.

Armenia is a place where some of the most sophisticated technology can be created, and later it can be used everywhere, so I always knew Armenia had this reputation. I have an Armenian friend, who started a company around 10 years ago, and it’s an exceptionally successful firm now.

It is called OneMarketData, it operates globally. All of their technologies are done in Armenia and everybody knows them.

***
DataArt operates offices in nearly two dozen different places. It’s very important for the company to operate as one. In every location, where we work, we operate as one large team.

DataArt is a company where we are building success all together. Yerevan has been part of that common success. It’s all about people. We were lucky we met some really good people. I don’t know whether we would be in Armenia if we wouldn’t meet them.

***
I think it’s very important to understand our place in the business – what we do is help our clients move to the future of technology. We are selling a journey from where the client is today to where they will be in the future. It requires flexibility, there are new challenges every day, and it requires curiosity. The world is very flat and opportunities are everywhere.
