“As the largest and most influential Armenian American grassroots advocacy organization, we work on the local, state, and federal levels to promote our community’s interests and policy priorities,” remarked ANCA-WR Chair Nora Hovsepian, Esq. “We are grateful to Governor Newsom for taking the time to meet with us to discuss our priorities and to connect us directly with members of his staff who are responsible for the policy areas we discussed. We look forward to delivering tangible results for our community in the coming months and to continuing our productive relationship with the Governor and his Administration in line with his stated agenda of promoting cultural diversity and ensuring inclusiveness for all Californians.”

The day kicked off with a meeting with longtime friend California State Senator Anthony Portantino, who later introduced the ANCA-WR Board of Directors on the floor during the regular session of the Senate, where several Senators and friends of the Armenian-American community welcomed the ANCA-WR delegation.

On behalf of the Board, Governor Newsom and Senator Portantino each received a signed copy of Matthew Karanian’s “The Armenian Highland: Western Armenia and the First Armenian Republic of 1918,” as a show of gratitude for their friendship and overall support of the Armenian Cause.

The delegation also met with Appointments Secretary Cathryn Rivera-Hernandez, who recently took on the responsibility of vetting and recommending over 3,000 senior staff as well as boards and commissions appointments to the Governor. ANCA-WR highlighted the need to ensure more equitable representation of the State’s diversity by also considering qualified Armenian-Americans for a number of vacancies in State government.

In a meeting with Director of Civic Engagement and Strategic Partnerships Maricela Rodriguez, the ANCA-WR’s HyeVotes initiative for voter registration and participation as well as its creation of the first ever Armenian-American Complete Count Committee (AACCC) for Census 2020 were discussed at length in order to find ways to maximize our community’s participation in elections and in the upcoming Census through proper engagement and allocation of resources.

The visit culminated with an hour long meeting with Governor Gavin Newsom, who has been a longtime friend and ally of the Armenian-American community, previously also serving as the State’s Lt. Governor and prior to that as the Mayor of San Francisco. Some topics of discussion included the ANCA-WR’s Divest Turkey initiative and current bill AB1320 introduced by Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian; California’s proposed ethnic studies curriculum and the need to include the Armenian experience in the final draft both at the high school level as well as at the university level through the pending bill AB1460; allocation of resources to ensure the appropriate teaching of the Armenian Genocide in public schools as codified in Education Code Sections 51220 and 51226.3; and other high priority topics. As a follow-up to the ANCA-WR’s recent Legislative Trip to Armenia which included Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis who has been appointed by Governor Newsom to represent California in foreign affairs, the discussion also included further deepening and institutionalizing bilateral relations between California and Armenia and identifying prospects of strengthening California-Armenia trade and economic relations, including the trade office proposal introduced by Senator Portantino and currently pending as SB302 in the State Legislature.

The Armenian National Committee of America – Western Region is the largest and most influential nonpartisan Armenian American grassroots advocacy organization in the Western United States. Working in coordination with a network of offices, chapters, and supporters throughout the Western United States and affiliated organizations around the country, the ANCA-WR advances the concerns of the Armenian American community on a broad range of issues in pursuit of the Armenian Cause.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 9, ARMENPRESS. Russia’s stance in deciding the final status of Nagorno Karabakh and settling the conflict through negotiations remains unchanged, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on August 9 during a briefing.

“Russia proceeds from the point that the final status of Nagorno Karabakh must be decided through negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. You know our stance, it hasn’t changed,” she said.

Zakharova noted that Russia will continue assisting the peaceful resolution of the NK conflict.

“We, as one of the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, and considering Moscow’s close relations with Baku and Yerevan, remain inclined to provide support with the purpose of comprehensive advancement of the peace process”, she said.

Zakharova noted that the mutual accusations between Azerbaijan and Armenia are concerning for Russia. “This kind of rhetoric doesn’t correspond to the development of favorable conditions for the negotiations process, and accordingly, to the interests of finding compromise options for the resolution of the conflict”.

Russia: Sochi Int’l Airport firing Armenian employees

JAM News
Aug 3 2019

Dozens of people have signed a statement asking for protection against what they say is a “cleansing” of airport personnel on ethnic grounds

Employees with Armenian surnames are being laid off at the Sochi International Airport in Russia’s south.

Dozens of airport employees published a statement several days ago, asking for help in what they said is clearly a case of ethnic discrimination.

The statement was signed by about 30 employees of Sochi International Airport.

It reads:

“For the second year already [ed. at Sochi airport], there is a brusque ‘cleansing’ of personnel on an ethnic basis. Employees with Armenian surnames are being dismissed by all possible means.”

According to the signatories, the discriminatory firing of Armenian personnel started back in 2018.

The first “purge” was carried out in two departments of the airport – in the Transportation Management Service and the Aviation Security Service.

“As a result, more than 70 people were left without work in these two services, including single mothers, the only bread-winners in the family, war veterans, staff members who have disabled disabled dependents, and others,” the airport staff said.

Employees ended their appeal with a request to “stop discrimination against Armenians in the airport of Sochi.”

“We just want to work, live normally, feed our families and be confident in the stability of the future of our children and grandchildren!”

Once the news came to the attention of many Armenian and several Russian media outlets, the press service of the airport commented:

“Given … the insulting information about the company released in the media, Sochi International Airport officially declares that the company’s personnel policy is in full compliance with the demands of Russian legislation.”

The statement further reads that the “composition of the airport staff is multinational, which is an indisputable advantage.”

The airport denies that personnel have been fired on ethnic grounds, and says that employees with whom contracts were recently terminated “are using issues of ethnicity for their own personal benefit.”

“The actions of this group of persons are not only illegal, but also lead to incitement of ethnic hatred, which is unacceptable”.

Sochi airport employee Karen Petrosyan says that the company earlier made it clear that they were waiting to hire other employees:

They kind of secretly warned us that they would not let us work for a long time – ‘finish the season’ [they said], and then be ready for dismissal, without any particular reason.”

Petrosyan, who has not yet been dismissed, says that none of the employees has received an explanation as to the essence of the problem:

This is an ethnicity issue, because 90% of those who are going to be dismissed have a last name that ends in ‘yan.’ No one is saying what the essence of the problem is. They are just removing all non-Russians.

So far, only Chairman of the Permanent Parliamentary Commission on Regional and Eurasian Integration Mikael Melkumyan has commented on the issue.

“I contacted the Consul General of Armenia in Rostov-on-Don Vardan Asoyan and asked him to clarify this information”, Melkumyan said.

Melkumyan promised to raise this issue at meetings with colleagues from the Russian State Duma.

As for the office of the Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs, so far there have been no statements made.
