Men go down to Russia, women move up to second

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

Posted online: Tuesday, October 26, 2004 at 0000 hours IST

MALLORCA, OCTOBER 25: Fighting hard, the Indian men suffered a 1.5-2.5
defeat against top seed and defending champion Russia in the 9th round of
the 36th Chess Olympiad at the gran casino here. There was cause for cheer
in ghe women’s section, however, with India, led by Grandmaster Koneru
Humpy, beating Ukraine to be placed second.

World rapid champion Viswanathan Anand crashed through the defences of
Grandmaster Alexander Morozevich and gave India an early lead while Krishnan
Sasikiran also came good on the second board, getting an easy draw playing
black against Russian champion Peter Svidler. But while Surya Sekhar Ganguly
was outdone from a complicated position by Vadim Zvjaginsev, P Harikrishna
missed out against Alexander Dreev.

Russia, with 24.5 points, moved closer to leaders Ukraine after the win but
remain 2.5 points adrift.

With just five more rounds remaining, the US was the biggest gainer of the
day, moving to sole third spot with 24 points after drubbing Spain ‘A’
3.5-0.5. Armenia and third seed Israel are joint fourth with 23 points while
the Indians share the sixth spot on 22.5 along with Switzerland, Bulgaria,
France, Slovenia, Azerbaijan and Cuba. Poland and Moldova are next in line
on 22 points each.

Anand was brilliance personified as he outplayed Morozevich in an extremely
complicated game arising out of a Sicilian Defence and leading to a hedgehog
setup. Going for an opening surprise, Sasikiran employed the Tchigorin
variation in the Ruy Lopez rather than his normal Brayer and it appeared as
if Svidler was not well-prepared. Getting the normal complications in the
middle game, Sasikiran was the first to simplify matters as he went for
routine exchanges on the queen side to maintain the balance. In the women’
section, GM Koneru Humpy guided India to a 2-1 victory to elevate the team
to joint second spot. Playing on the top board, Humpy was undeterred by some
near ominous defence by Natalia Zhukova and recorded an impressive victory
for India, Vijayalakshmi managed a draw with Inna Gaponenko, while
Dronavalli Harika did well to hold Kateryna Lahno on the third board to
complete the Indian victory.

The battle for gold, though, appears almost over for the other teams as
China scored a comprehensive 3-0 victory, cruising past Lithuania in another
one sided contest. China’s tally now stands at 23.5 points, a massive
six-point lead over nearest rivals Russia, USA, Hungary and India.

Indonesia’s men’s squad beat Brazil while their female compatriots
held Luxembourg to a draw on Monday in the 10th round of the chess
Olympiad in Calvia, Spain.

International Master (IM) Susanto Megaranto, 17 years old, maintained
his winning streak by defeating Grand Master Henrique Mecking
to lead Indonesia to a 2.5-1.5 victory over Brazil, according to

The team’s other win was contributed by FIDE Master (FM) Taufik Halay,
who beat Ivan Nogueira while IM Dede Liu drew with IM Cicero Braga
and Tirta Chandra lost to FM Alexander Fier.

In the ninth round on Sunday, Susanto emerged the only winner as
Indonesia overcame New Zealand also with 2.5-1.5 victory.

Two back-to-back victories, which came at the backdrop of their
crushing defeat by the Philippines in the eighth round, gave Indonesia
an overall 21.5 points to stay in 45th place out of 129 teams from
128 countries.

Seven other teams collected equal points including England whom
Indonesia faced in the 11th of 14-round world chess team competition
on Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, 14-year-old Irene Kharisma took her fourth consecutive win
but the Indonesian women’s team had to be content with a 1.5-1.5 draw
with Luxembourg.

On Monday, Irene delivered the only full point for the team with
her win over Myriam Pleim. Evi Lindiawati drew with Grazyna Bakalarz
while Norasa Verdiana was beaten by WGM Elvira Berend.

It was Irene’s sixth win during the tournament in addition to four
draws to put her as the fourth best performer on board three —
behind WGM Zhao Xue of China, IM Kateryna Lahno of Ukraine and WIM
Josefina Martinez of Venezuela — with personal collection of 8 points.

China dominated the women’s competition, topping the standings with
24.5 points. Hungary was in a distant second place with 20 points
followed by the United States, India and Georgia with 19.5 points each.

The men’s section saw Ukraine on top with 29 points, two points
above second-placed and reigning champion Russia, while Armenia was
in third with 26.5 points.

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 12, ARMENPRESS: Armenia Tree Project (ATP) inaugurated
today its Michael and Virginia Ohanian Environmental Education Center
in Karin, Armenia. The establishment of this ATP educational center
is the result of a generous donation from Mrs. Virginia Ohanian
of Belmont, Massachusetts, in memory of her late husband, the late
Michael Ohanian. Mrs. Ohanian has been a devoted supporter of ATP
for many years.

ATP established its tree nursery in Karin in 1996. As part of ATP’s
expansion of its programs, the organization has added environmental
and forestry education to its mission. Immediately after Mrs. Ohanian
learned about this program, this educational center was proposed and
established on the nursery site.

Already, nursery director Samvel Ghandilyan has taught six sessions
of courses with over 130 students this year at the Ohanian Education
Center. Most of the students have come from the Agricultural Academy,
as well as the local schools in Karin.

Mrs. Ohanian was present at the inauguration today, along with a
number of other ATP’s diasporan supporters traveling with the Armenian
Assembly of America Trustees’ Delegation to Armenia.

Armenia Tree Project was founded in 1994 during Armenia’s darkest
and coldest years with the vision of securing Armenia’s future
by protecting Armenia’s environment. Funded by contributions from
diasporan Armenians, ATP has planted and rejuvenated over 530,000
trees at more than 450 sites ranging from Gyumri to Goris.

German “Chenbach” Company To Participate In Modernization Of “Armenal”

YEREVAN, October 11 (Noyan Tapan). The “Rusal” company, the owner of
“Armenal”, signed the agreement on the implementation of the program
of the modernization of the complex with the Germany “Achenbach”
company on October 8. Alexander Livshits, Deputy Director General of
“Rusal”, mentioned that according to the program it is expected that
the equipment for aluminum rolling will be completely modernized
and they will pass to closed production cycle. 6-9 microns thick
aluminum foil, which is in good demand on the market, will be produced
after the modernization of the enterprise. At the same time, it
was mentioned that the implementation of the program will give an
opportunity to reach the annual volume of the production of thin
foil till 18 thousand tons and the production of domestic foil till
7,000 tons. It is expected that the first pilot batch of 150,000
tons of production will be released in late 2005. The total amount
of the program will make 70 mln dollars, 25 mln dollars of them
are the own means of the “Rusal” company, and 45 mln dollars will
be attracted at the expense of credits. During the modernization
“Achenbach” will perform sub-contractor orders of 100 mln dollars
at the Armenian enterprises. According to A. Livshits, by the way,
the fact of the closing of the Russian-Georgian border will have no
impact on the investment attractiveness of Armenia, and his presence
in Armenia is the evidence of it.

War’s human toll lamented

War’s human toll lamented

By Connie Ogle

‘ARMS AREN’T WINGS,” a woman in Louis de Bernieres’ violent,
heartbreaking yet resplendent new antiwar novel tells a small boy who
longs to fly. “If we had wings, do you think we would suffer so much
in one place? Don’t you think we would fly away to paradise?”

Oh, yes, we would fly. We would soar. We would escape the bloody
whims of history; the terrifying inevitability of change; the fear,
horror and death that bloom when powerful forces decide that
invisible borders — geographical, cultural, religious — count more
than people.

In the grand, sweeping style of his international blockbuster
“Corelli’s Mandolin,” de Bernieres masterfully explores the terrible
price of love, politics and war — a cost we still insist on paying.
“Birds Without Wings” is a breathtaking, sorrowful account of the
Ottoman Empire’s death, seen through the eyes of the Turks and
Greeks, Christians and Muslims of a tiny coastal town in southwest
Anatolia. Like “Corelli’s Mandolin,” which features the inhabitants
of the Greek island of Cephallonia during World War II, “Birds
Without Wings” traces another turbulent era’s devastating effects on
a simple place and its people. Fueled by rich storytelling and superb
historical detail, the novel is set in “the age when everyone wanted
an empire and felt entitled to one, days of innocence perhaps, before
the world realized, if it yet has, that empires were pointless and
expensive, and their subject peoples rancorous and ungrateful.”

Turkey bridges the gap between East and West, its largely Islamic
population governed by a secular democratic government, and so the
novel feels disturbingly pertinent. But de Bernieres never fails to
keep his characters in sharp focus as he offers us an impassioned
argument against aggression and blind nationalism, lamenting its cost
with a fervor disturbingly relevant to our current war-heightened
sensibilities.

He is also a magnificent storyteller, bringing to life humble
Eskibahce and its rustic inhabitants, among them Ali the
Broken-Nosed, not to be confused with Ali the Snow-bringer; Mehmetcik
and Karatavuk, best friends who mimic birds as boys and grow up to
fight different battles; the homeless Dog, whose ravaged visage
frightens everyone; the lonely Rustem Bey, the town’s wealthy
landlord; and Ibrahim and Philothei, Muslim and Christian, betrothed
since childhood but doomed to tragedy.

Religion rarely polarizes. “Life was merrier when the Christians were
still among us, not least because almost every one of their days was
the feast of some saint,” Iskander the Potter, one of our narrators,
confides. The town’s imam and priest respectfully greet each other as
“Infidel Efendi.” Brides adopt their husbands’ faith without
argument. Muslims stand at the back of the church during Christian
services; Christian feet tread the clay that shapes Muslim pots. All
this will change with the rise of Mustafa Kemal, founder of modern
Turkey, whose story de Bernieres also tells in short, succinct
chapters that grow more complex as the soldier’s dreams expand.

De Bernieres, like Kemal, is a harsh critic of religious monomania.
“It is curious that the Russians, calling themselves Christians, and
like so many other nominal Christians throughout history, took no
notice whatsoever of the key parable of Jesus Christ himself, which
taught that you shall love your neighbor as yourself, and that even
those you have despised and hated are your neighbors. This has never
made any difference to Christians, since the primary epiphenomena of
any religion’s foundation are the production and flourishment of
hypocrisy, megalomania and psychopathy.” He is scornful of Islamic
extremists as well, decrying the “mad light of moral certainty in the
eyes of those who acted on God’s commands as laid down in holy books
that no one was able to read.”

War, quite simply, appalls de Bernieres. His lengthy, unnerving
descriptions of the battle of Gallipoli — the book is dedicated
partly to his grandfather, who was severely wounded there — detail
atrocities with brutal, numbing repetition. “There had been fighting
for one month, and the dead had never been collected,” Iskander’s son
Karatavuk tells us. “Some bodies were swollen up, and some were
black, and they were seething with maggots, and others were turning
to green slime, and others were fully rotted and shriveling up so
that the bones stuck out through the skin. A lot of them were built
into the parapets and fortifications, so that you might say they were
being employed as sandbags.”

“Birds Without Wings” is not without moments of humor, but atrocity
haunts it — children crucified and disemboweled by the Greeks, the
Turkish slaughter of Armenians at Smyrna. “I blame men of God of both
faiths,” Iskander says. “I blame all those who gave their soldiers
permission to behave like wolves.”

In the face of horror, de Bernieres can offer only the meager comfort
of man’s ability to endure and adapt. But he has given us a marvelous
novel nonetheless. Its insight into the darkest human desires is
unerring and indelible. Oh, how we long for paradise. Oh, how we long
to fly.

SENATOR JACKIE SPEIER TO BE ONE OF MANY HONORED GUESTS AT OCTOBER
ANNUAL BANQUET

ANCA-WR Meets with State’s Highest Ranking Armenian Democratic Public
Official

Glendale, CA – California State Senator Jackie Speier (D-San
Francisco, San Mateo) visited the offices of the Armenian National
Committee of America- Western Region (ANCA-WR) on Tuesday, September
28 to discuss issues of concern to Armenian-Americans in California
with community leaders. Members of the ANCA-WR Board of Directors and
the Armenian Relief Society (ARS) greeted the Senator and were briefed
on the issues that the Senator has been working onin the State
Capitol.

Senator Speier will be amongst the many public officials in attendance
at this year’s Annual Banquet which will be held at the Ritz-Carlton
Huntington Hotel in Pasadena, California on October 24, 2004. ANCA-WR
Chairman Raffi Hamparian welcomed Senator Speier to the ANCA-WR
headquarters and thanked her for steadfast support of legislation and
issues that affect Armenian-Americans in the state. The Senator is
the state’s highest ranking Democratic elected official of Armenian
descent and the only Armenian-American woman currently serving in the
State Legislature.

ANCA-WR Board Member Steven Dadaian briefed the Senator on economic
developments in the Republic of Armenia and highlighted the necessity
for the State of California to remain committed to its promise of
establishing the California Regional Trade Office in Armenia. Angela
Savoian, Chairwoman of the ARS Western United States, also briefed the
Senator on the history of the ARS and described the essential social
services that the organization continues to provide to immigrants.
During the meeting, Senator Speier reiterated the importance of her
Armenian ancestry in shaping her commitment to being a public servant
and fighting for justice.

Senator Speier’s career-long commitment to public service was nearly
cut short in 1978 when she traveled as legal counsel to California
Congressman Leo J. Ryan to Jonestown, Guyana as part of a
U.S. fact-finding mission that was to investigate rumors that people,
including many Bay Area families, were being held hostage by cult
leader Rev. Jim Jones. On November 18, 1978, at the end of a two-day
investigation, gunmen from the Peoples Temple cult ambushed, shot and
killed Congressman Ryan and four others in his traveling group.
Speier, then 28 years old, was struck by five bullets and was `left
for dead’ on a jungle airstrip for 22 hours. The day she was shot,
911 cult members committed mass suicide or were murdered at the
Peoples Temple compound. Senator Speier has stated that `the
Jonestown tragedy is a daily reminder that no one is guaranteed
tomorrow . . . this has absolutely molded my philosophy and my zest
for work and for life.’ To this day, she carries two bullets in her
body from the incident.

Two years after the Jonestown shootings, Speier became the youngest
member ever to serve on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors when
she won her first election by defeating a 20-year incumbent. Senator
Speier served in the State Assembly from 1986 to 1996 before being
elected to the State Senate where she is completing her second term.

Senator Speier has announced her intent to run for Lieutenant Governor
of the State of California. If elected, Senator Jackie Speier would
become only the second Armenian-American to serve in statewide office
since Governor George Deukmejian (1983 – 1991).

`Senator Speier’s dedication to public service and to the people of
California is truly admirable and an excellent example for other young
aspiring Armenian-Americans to follow,’ commented Ardashes Kassakhian,
ANCA-WR Executive Director. `We’re looking forward to having her
attend our Annual Banquet on October 24th and joining us in honoring
other Armenian-American public officials who have paved the way for
future leaders,’ added Kassakhian referring to the ANCA-WR Annual
Banquet which will honor Congresswoman Anna Eshoo (D-CA) with the
ANCA-WR Legacy Award and State Senator Chuck Poochigian (R-Fresno)
with the Person of the Year Award. The annual event draws over 750
community leaders and activists, public officials, academicians and
ANC supporters.

Individuals or organizations interested in attending the ANCA-WR
Annual Banquet may call the ANCA-WR Offices at (818) 500-1918 to
reserve their table or individual tickets.

The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) is the largest and
most influential Armenian American grassroots political
organization. Working in coordination with a network of offices,
chapters, and supporters throughoutthe United States and affiliated
organizations around the world, the ANCA actively advances the
concerns of the Armenian American community on a broad range of
issues.
