/PanARMENIAN.Net/ In commemoration of the 125th anniversary of Shahan
Natalie’s birth, the Shahan Natalie Family Foundation invites the
public to attend a tribute to the living memory of the internationally
known intrepid Armenian thinker, writer, orator, and activist. The
event will take place on Saturday, April 10, 2010, in the Los Angeles
Public Library’s Mark Taper Auditorium. Preceding the afternoon
program, Sylva Natalie Manoogian will lead a Hye (Armenian) Treasures
tour of the Central Library’s resources, Asbarez.com reported.

Born in the village of Husenik, province of Kharberd, Historic Armenia,
Shahan Natalie (born Hagop Der Hagopian) was orphaned at the age
of 11, during the 1895 Hamidian massacres of the Armenians. He was
sent to Istanbul and was accepted by the famed Berberian Academy,
where his literary career and community activism were launched. At
the age of 16, he returned to his native village to join the teaching
staff of the school at the Church of St. Varvara. Four years later,
in 1904, he immigrated to the United States. Fated to be spared from
the atrocities of the 1915-1923 Armenian Genocide by order of the
Turkish government, he fulfilled his boyhood vow to devote his entire
life to defending the rights of his people world-wide.

Over a period of more than six decades, he wrote under the nom de
plume Shahan Natalie, published numerous Armenian language newspapers
and books, and traveled to his homeland and Armenian communities
throughout the Diaspora. Shahan Natalie’s literary legacy embodies
his love, devotion, and pride in the Armenian culture, language and
literature, as well as his admiration and respect for the languages and
literatures of the world. He transmitted these feelings to his family
and others whose lives he touched. In December 1998, the Los Angeles
Public Library’s International Languages Department Armenian Language &
Literature collection was dedicated in Shahan Natalie’s name.

Erdogan’s Visit To US In Limbo Over ‘Genocide’ Tensions

ERDOGAN’S VISIT TO US IN LIMBO OVER ‘GENOCIDE’ TENSIONS

Today’s Zaman
March 17 2010
Turkey

The government is weighing whether Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan should accept an invitation from US President Barack Obama
to visit Washington next month for a nuclear conference at a time
when relations are strained following a US House committee vote to
recognize Armenian claims of genocide.

Another option is the attendance of a government minister, instead of
Erdogan, at the April 12-13 summit, underlining Turkish unease over
the House Foreign Affairs Committee decision earlier this month. The
Obama administration has said it opposed the resolution, but Ankara
asserts that it should have done more to prevent the vote. The passage
in the committee paves the way for a vote in the full House, but US
officials have said it was unlikely that the measure would make its
way to the floor.

To protest the March 4 vote, the government recalled Ambassador to
the US Namık Tan and put its high-level contacts with the US on hold,
waiting for more clarity on how Washington plans to act on the matter.

President Obama is to make an annual statement on April 24, the day
Armenians say marks the beginning of the genocide campaign against
their ancestors in eastern Anatolia during World War I. Last year,
Obama avoided using the word "genocide" while referring to the killings
in order not to harm ongoing talks between Turkey and Armenia to
normalize their relations. It is not clear how he will formulate the
text of the message this year. Government sources have said visits
at the ministerial level to the US will be suspended until April 24.

Prime Minister Erdogan, when responding to a question on whether
he would visit Washington next month, at a press conference late
on Monday, was elusive. "We had no plans to visit the US, although
there was an invitation from the US. These are routine invitations. A
colleague of ours might attend the conference on behalf of Turkey,
but who this person could be, we haven’t decided," he told reporters,
referring to a Cabinet minister.

Earlier in the day, government spokesman Cemil Cicek briefly said
the issue was still under consideration.

On Tuesday, Energy Minister Taner Yıldız also declined to comment
on Turkish participation at the Nuclear Security Summit. "We will
be following developments. We will discuss this issue with the prime
minister," he told reporters.

Yıldız, however, said the political tension over the "genocide"
resolution was unlikely to affect energy cooperation between Turkey
and the US, saying US oil giant Exxon Mobil was to continue exploring
for oil in the Black Sea as part of a previous deal with the Turkish
government to that effect. "I don’t think there will be a negative
impact regarding this project," he said.

US wants dialogue Meanwhile, a senior US official has expressed regret
that Turkey recalled its ambassador and called for continued dialogue,
saying the US highly values its partnership with Turkey in the region.

US Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg, speaking at a meeting
at the Washington-based Atlantic Council, said the US valued its
partnership with Turkey and was looking forward to working with Turkey
in its process of reconciliation with Armenia, irrespective of what
differences there may be between Turkey and Congress. "We think we
have a very strong and constructive engagement with Turkey, and I hope
the Turkish leadership understands the strong importance we place on
this and continue to work with us to achieve common objectives."

Azerbaijan, Baku, March 16 / Trend News V. Zhavoronkova / The United
States intends to continue to work hard to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict.

"The United States will continue to work hard to resolve the Nagorno
Karabakh conflict", the U.S embassy in Azerbaijan public policy
department head Terry Davidson told media today.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994.

The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. –
are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s resolutions
on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the occupied
territories.

According to him, the U.S. along with the settlement of the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict are working with the Azerbaijani government
to improve human rights protection.

"We are constantly discussing the issue of human rights with the
Azerbaijani government. This is an area in which we work together to
develop it," Davidson said.

OSCE monitors did not manage to complete observation of the line of
contact between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops today.

Under the mandate of the personal representative of the OSCE
chairman-in-office, the contact line south of the village of Tezekend
in Azerbaijan’s Agdam District was to be monitored on 16 March,
the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry’s press service said.

The ministry warned the OSCE representatives that the terrain was
difficult and boggy. Since the OSCE insisted on monitoring that
section of the contact line, the ministry gave permission, the press
service said.

Today the OSCE vehicles got stuck in a swamp in the area. The vehicles
were dragged out of the swamp with the help of local residents and
equipment.

Imre Palatinus and Jaslan Nurtazin, field assistants of the OSCE
chairman-in-office’s personal representative, were unable to complete
their monitoring as a result.

Field assistants Peter Key, Vladimir Chountulov and Antal Herdich
were to conduct the monitoring on the opposite side of the contact
line in territory recognized as Azerbaijani in international law.

Sweden’s prime minister has called his Turkish counterpart to distance
himself from a parliament move branding the massacres of Armenians
by Ottoman Turks as genocide, Ankara said Sunday.

Sweden’s Frederik Reinfeldt called Recep Tayyip Erdogan Enhanced
Coverage LinkingRecep Tayyip Erdogan -Search using: Biographies
Plus News News, Most Recent 60 Days on Saturday evening to voice
"his sadness and say that his government absolutely did not share
the decision," Erdogan’s office said in a statement.

Blaming the vote on "domestic politics," Reinfeldt said his government
was "ready to do the necessary so that this unfounded decision does
not harm bilateral relations," according to the text.

The Swedish prime minister also assured Erdogan that the parliament’s
move did not weaken Stockholm’s support of Turkey’s EU accession
ambitions.

Going against the government’s advice, the Swedish parliament voted by
a narrow margin on Thursday to recognise the "genocide of Armenians"
during the breakup of the Ottoman Empire.

Ankara quickly recalled its ambassador and cancelled a visit by Erdogan
to Sweden after the vote, which came just days after a similar move
by a US Congressional panel.

In remarks to Sweden’s TT news agency, Reinfeldt said that he
had expressed to his Turkish counterpart "regrets following the
parliament’s decision because it politicises history."

According to the Turkish statement, Erdogan "strongly insisted on the
disappointment" felt in Turkey over the vote, while recognising that
the government was against it.

He also called for "measures to repair the situation."

Sassounian : "Le Projet De Resolution Ne Peut Pas Etre Enterre"

On

Directeur The California Courier

Redacteur USA Armenian Life Magazine

question, Mme Clinton, nullement decontenancee, a repondu :

Carnahan (D-MO), Gerald Conolly (D-VA), Michael McMahon (D-NY), Mike
Ross (D-AR), Brad Miller (D-NC), David Scott (D-GA), Gregory Meeks
(D-NY), Ileana Ross-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ron Paul (R-TX), Jeff Flake
(R-AZ), Mike Pence (R-IN) Joe Wilson (R-SC), Connie Mack (R-FL),
Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE), Michael McCaul (R-TX), Ted Poe (R-TX),
Bob Inglis (R-SC), and Dan Burton (R-IN). Bill Delahunt (D-MA) et
John Tanner (D-TN) se retirent du Congrès. Gresham Barrett (R-SC)

: Gary Ackerman (D-NY), Eni Faleomavaega (D-American Samoa), Donald
Payne (D-NJ), Brad Sherman (D-CA), Eliot Engel (D-NY), Diane Watson
(D-CA), Albio Sires (D-NJ), Gene Green (D-TX), Lynn Woolsey (D-CA),
Barbara Lee (D-CA), Shelley Berkley (D-NV), Joseph Crowley (D-NY),
Jim Costa (D-CA), Keith Ellison (D-MN), Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ),
Christopher Smith (R-NJ), Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), Dana Rohrabacher
(R-CA), Donald Manzullo (R-IL), and Edward Royce (R-CA), Elton Gallegly
(R-CA), and Ron Klein (D-FL).

RUSSIAN ANALYST: RAPPROCHEMENT WITH RUSSIA IS NOT BENEFICIAL TO TURKEY

Interview with well-known Russian journalist, political expert and
publicist Leonid Radzikhovsky.

In your opinion, what is the aim of adoption of the "Armenian genocide"
resolution by the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Relations- to
accelerate the process of opening the Armenian-Turkish border or to
prevent Turkey from excessive recent rapprochement with Russia in
trade, economic and even military fields, or something else?

All that you said is quite possible. But we should not forget about
one more thing, quite typical for American system of governance –
representative democracy. Congressmen often act against the White
House interests and even against interests of the administration of
their party.

For example, a Congressman may represent interests of a very
influential Armenian Diaspora in the United States without thinking
about what implications his decision on the resolution may have in the
near future. The most important for him is re-election in a few years
depending on the voters, among whom there are influential individuals
and sponsors from the Armenian lobby. And the fact that the "genocide"
has already been recognized by a number of countries is not due to high
level Armenian foreign policy, but focused actions of the Armenian
Diaspora. That is, there is pressure from not individual voters,
but well-organized groups.

Moreover, it is worth noting that the Armenian Diaspora in the U.S. is
unlikely to be larger than the Turkish or Azerbaijani Diasporas.

However, we must admit that it is well organized, and its
representatives act in concert. Jewish, Ukrainian and Polish Diasporas
of the U.S. also act in a similar way.

In your opinion, what will be fate of the Turkey-U.S. relations?

The United States cannot afford spoiling relations with Turkey
seriously. In particular, one cannot forget deteriorating relations
between the U.S. and Iran. In the meantime, Turkey is a NATO member
and the only key player for Americans in the Middle East for all
its parameters. The White House has enough resources to stop, or
at least suspend, recognition of "genocide". So, I do not expect
conflict between the U.S. and Turkey. Americans perfectly understand
what implications it might have.

In addition, internal political situation in Turkey must also be taken
into account. Internal split prevails in the country. There is very
strong trend towards development of Islamic fundamentalism. At the same
time, army and supporters of secular development of the country enjoy
great influence. In such situation to spoil relations with Turkey,
in general, means a great favour for the Islamists and weakening of
pro-Western forces in that country. Why? For the sake of resolution
on what, something, that happened some 90 years ago?

Americans will not do this, because it is vital for Washington
to preserve the secular pro-Western Turkey with all the ensuing
consequences.

The paradox is that the country that desired adoption of the resolution
most of all suffered from the decision of the Congress committee more
than the rest, since opening of the Turkey-Armenia border fell into
oblivion for near future at least. Do you share this statement?

It is worth recall what Hillary Clinton said. She noted that such
a resolution would complicate the normalization of Armenian-Turkish
relations … Yes, this is largely true, but in this case one should
also understand that the interests of Armenia and the Armenians
self-esteem are not the same. Armenians of the U.S. have nationalistic
sentiments, but they do not live in Armenia, and do not feel effects
of opening or closing the border with Turkey.

So, recognition of the "genocide" is very important for their national
pride and identity. So, there is also an internal conflict among
Armenians in the U.S. What effect it will have on situation back
in homeland is important, but the recognition of "genocide" is even
more important. The struggle between national ambitions and pragmatic
interests is obvious.

For example, let’s cite the Karabakh conflict as an example. Did
occupation of lands bring happiness to Armenia? Is it not advantageous
for them to simply return the land and establish normal relations
with Azerbaijan and Turkey? It is profitable for them. It cannot to
happen overnight because it is a question of national identity.

Can we say that Russia is happy at complicated relations between
Turkey and the U.S.? Because now it can come even closer to Ankara
and solve problems of the region without intervention of a distant
America. What can you say about this?

I agree that the failure of the U.S. is seen as a success in Russia,
and vice versa. Speaking specifically, I do not think that Russia can
substitute the United States for Turkey. First, we must not forget
that Russia has recognized the "Armenian genocide."

A more significant is the following circumstance – Turkey remains a
NATO member which is crucial for it. Russia can offer nothing like that
to Turkey. Turkey’s main concern like all developing countries is not
to get closer to Russia, but only to the EU, Western civilization, etc.

Therefore, strategically, Russia is not comparable centre of influence
for Turkey’s. The only alternative for Turkey at the moment is to
build a society oriented either to the West or the Islamic society.

Russia is not an attractive force here as well.

Tactically, it is possible to increase military contacts with Russia.

It is unpleasant for the U.S. and one can speculate on that. Turkey
also may conduct negotiations with Russia on Nabucco.

Apart from this, everyone knows that not the U.S., but Russia shapes
Armenia’s policy. Because no matter how influential Armenian diaspora
in the U.S. is, America is far away while Russia is not. Armenia
cannot simply exist without Russia’s help. Turkey needs to understand
to what degree relations with Ankara is important for the Kremlin in
order to put pressure on Armenia about the disputed issues.

The answer is obvious: today Russia lacks influence (or maybe it does
not have willingness, but this is another question) to ensure that
Armenia has changed its position at least on a historical topic of
"genocide". In the meantime, Russia is a strategic partner for Armenia,
and will not easily give up this partnership. Russia’s politicians
are well aware that Turkey is a strong country, which will always
be independent from Russia and will always be in a close touch with
NATO while Armenia is a country totally dependent on Russia, one of
the few remaining junior partners. Russia cherishes relations with
Armenia at least for this reason.

So, strategically, Turkey will not move from pro-Western and pro-NATO
position to the pro-Russian position. It will not benefit the country.

In this situation, the maximum that Russia could do is to organize
a tripartite conference involving Turkey and Armenia, or even
Azerbaijan. Such meetings are not usually productive, but nevertheless
it would be a spectacular move on part of Russia’s diplomacy.

Swedish genocide vote angers Turks

Swedish genocide vote angers Turks

Financial Times, UK

Sweden scrambled to contain damage to ties with Turkey after its
parliament labelled as genocide the Ottoman-era killings of Armenians,
a week after a similar vote by a US congressional panel dealt a blow
to relations between Ankara and Washington .

The Swedish resolution, passed by a single vote on Thursday, will hurt
ties with one of Turkey’s strongest supporters in the European Union,
when Ankara’s relations with the bloc are already strained by the slow
pace of accession talks.

Turkey has recalled its ambassador from Stockholm for consultations
and cancelled a visit by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s prime
minister, scheduled for next week. The visit was intended to promote
trade and investment and to discuss ideas for joint work on
reconstruction in Afghanistan, a Turkish official said.

Carl Bildt, Sweden’s foreign minister, said the vote did not reflect
government policy and warned it would undermine reconciliation between
Turkey and Armenia, which had agreed that a committee of historians
should discuss the 1915 massacres.

"The Government worked actively to make this clear to [parliament]
before the debate," he said. "The decision will not help the debate in
Turkey, which has become increasingly open and tolerant."

Mr Bildt has been a vocal backer of Turkey’s EU bid, warning opponents
last year it would be a "mistake of historic proportions" to shut the
door on Ankara.

Turkey denies deportations and killings of ethnic Armenians
constituted genocide, arguing many Turks also died in the chaos of the
Ottoman empire’s collapse. The Swedish resolution provoked additional
outrage because it also said other Christian groups – Assyrians,
Syrians, Chaldeans and Pontic Greeks – had suffered genocide.

A sizeable Turkish community in Stockholm includes ethnic Assyrians as
well as Kurds and Turks, and one concern is the vote could inflame
existing tensions between these groups.

Yet in comparison with last week’s strident reaction to the US vote,
Turkish ministers appeared to play down the significance of the
decision in Stockholm.

Egemen Bagis, Turkey’s EU negotiator, said Turkey was "disappointed"
by the decision. An earlier prime minister statement said it "did not
befit Turkish-Swedish relations and the close co-operation and
friendship between our peoples", blaming the outcome on lobbyists and
pre-election political manoeuvres.

The Quedagh Merchant, alias Cara Merchant, belonged to the notorious
Captain William Kidd ‘ a Scottish privateer-turned-pirate who was
hanged after a summary trial in London in 1701. Robert Louis
Stevenson’s Treasure Island and Edgar Allen Poe’s The Gold Bug are
some among the works of pirate lore inspired by Kidd’s story.

Now, three years after this find, Charles D Beeker, director of
Underwater Science and Academics at Indiana University, USA, is
preparing to visit the Gujarati city of Surat, where the ship was
built in the 17th century, for "a presentation on a unique and
significant aspect" of India’s maritime lore.

Beeker, who recently presented the results of his research at the
Museum of London Docklands, said: "I am committed to featuring India’s
maritime heritage as represented through Captain Kidd’s captured ship.
This is the only example of the unique 17th century Surat shipbuilding
technology and should be recognised for its international
significance."

For more than 12 years, Beeker and fellow Indiana University
archaeologist Geoffrey Conrad have been researching the era where the
"new and old worlds first met", focusing on La Isabela Bay, where the
first Spanish settlement was established by Christopher Columbus in
1494.

Appointed by the Dominican Republic to research the shipwreck, Beeker
confirmed its authenticity. "Last summer, when we first recovered a
cannon from the shipwreck, we found the keel of the ship. I’m shocked
it is still there. It is made of teak, resistant to decomposition,
which probably explains how the keel managed to survive so many
decades under water."

Gujarat’s shipbuilders used indigenous technology on the timber of
which the keel was made ‘ the teak was smeared with a paste of chunnam
(lime), gum sandrac and gingelly and left to dry. In only a day, the
process made the wood almost as hard as stone. The keel was then lined
with dammar, a vegetable-based substitute for tar, to make it
leak-proof .

Praful Wadia, who still practices his ancestral trade of boat-building
, said: "The boats made in Gujarat were thrice as capable of wading
into deep seas while remaining leak proof." Wadia, who constructs and
supplies boats for Surat Municipal Corporation, said Suratis used the
locally-made wadhrai joints ‘ ‘N’ -shaped rabbets ‘ to hold the ship
together and used special marine waxlike glue on the joints to caulk
the planks. They then covered it with cotton and clamped it tight,
making it leak proof. Teak from the Dang forests was preferred as it
had a heavy content of oil, which made the vessel resistant to decay
in water.’

Shipbuilding was not a just a trade in the coastal towns of Gujarat,
according to ancient Indian texts, it was a way of life. Located along
the country’s longest coastline that runs 1,600km, trade via sea
existed here since 2 BC, as Lothal’s trapezoid reservoir and
terracotta boat models prove. Even the Mahabharata, the ancient
Greco-Roman texts like the Batiyas and Peryaksa and African Tibu Tib
mention the ports of Gujarat. European travellers of THE 16th and 17th
centuries ‘ Tomes Pires, Nicolo Conti and J Ovington to name a few ‘
have written of the master craftsmanship and shipbuilding skills of
the Gujaratis.

During the Mughal reign, Aurangzeb’s fleet anchored on the Gujarat
coast included massive 800-ton vessels like the ‘Ganj-i-Sawai’ , which
would sail out from Surat’s Meccapul with Haj pilgrims bound for
Mecca.

Ships built in Surat ‘ constructed to survive rough voyages in spite
of damage to certain parts ‘ easily outshone the ones made in Europe.
Lovji Nusservanji Wadia, who set up the Bombay Dockyard in 1750 and
went on to build frigates for the British, had honed his skills in his
home state, particularly in Surat. His surname, Wadia, is derived from
the word ‘Wahandia’ , meaning shipbuilder. During his trial, in 1699,
William Kidd had testified that

The Quedagh Merchant was a "ship about 400 tons in burthen, made by
the Surrat moors".

Being the only pirate ship ever discovered in the Caribbean and only
one of three ever found in the Americas, The Quedagh Merchant is a
prized catch for archaeologists, marine biologists, ecologists and
geologists .

"Interpretation is very important to this project, as one of our main
goals is to educate the general public not just about the shipwreck,
but also about the fragility of the surrounding marine life and their
ecosystem," says Fritz Hanselmann, anthropologist and research
coordinator with Indiana University’s Office of Underwater Science.

Months after its discovery, the US Agency for International
Development (USAID) granted the department $200,000 to turn Captain
Kidd’s shipwreck site and three other underwater preserves in the
Dominican Republic into a "no-take, no-anchor living museum" .
National Geographic aired a documentary and released a DVD titled
‘Shipwreck! Captain Kidd’ about the discovery of the shipwreck and on
the research that followed.

In January this year, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis (the
biggest of its kind in the world) funded the lifting and transport of
one of the 26 cannons weighing 2,800 kg to Indiana what University’s
underwater Science Conservation Lab for further research and
conservation . "This is a great opportunity for the faculty and
students to experience this unique artefact that has created such
international interest," Beeker said.

Professor Sumit Ganguly, director of India Studies at the Indiana
University, who was conferred with the ‘Pravasi Bhartiya Samman Award’
, the highest honour bestowed on Indians abroad, last year, said:
"Indiana University is globally reputed for academic excellence. Over
and above the discovery of Captain William Kidd’s shipwreck in the
Caribbean, I am pleased with the varsity’s research on The Quedagh
Merchant. The vessel is a unique example of 17th century shipbuilding
technique used in western India and among the most significant
representative of India’s maritime heritage."

"People often ask me if I found any of the famous treasure on board
the Quedagh," smiles Charles Beeker. "To them, I point out the fact
that no other 17th century ships had rabetted joints with
tongue-in-groove construction . We believe this is a living museum.
The treasure, in this case, is the wreck itself. The preserve will
provide riches of sorts for people to enjoy for hundreds of years."
Someday soon, Beeker hopes, he will sail to Indian shores and share
the true wealth of The Quedagh Merchant in her homeland.

PRIVATEER OR PIRATE?
Born in Scotland in 1645, William Kidd started as a legitimate
privateer for Great Britain against the French in the Carribean and
off the coast of North America. By 1690, he was an established sea
captain and shipowner in New York City, where he owned property At
various times, Kidd was dispatched by both New York and Massachusetts
to rid the coast of enemy privateers. In 1695, he received a British
commission to apprehend pirates who targeted East India Company
vessels in the the Indian Ocean Kidd recruited some sailors in New
York. The new members were mostly smugglers and former pirates, and
they intended to attack all ships with no exception. As expected, Kidd
objected and the arguments between him and the newlypromoted crew
began. Some of the disappointed crew left Kidd while others kept
trying to persuade him. In one of the conflicts, an enraged Kidd
killed his gunner, William Moore Sometime in 1696, Kidd, unable to
handle the pressure from his crew, hijacked the East India Company’s
Quedagh Merchant. Kidd became a wanted man as the East India Company
forced the government to brand him a pirate He surrendered in New York
in 1699, after burying his treasure on Gardiners Island (now near Long
Island) having been promised a pardon. Sent to England for trial, he
was found guilty of Moore’s murder and five counts of piracy Kidd was
hanged on May 23, 1701. The first rope put around his neck broke and
he had to be strung up a second time. His corpse was placed in a
gibbet at the mouth of the Thames and left to rot as an example to
other would-be pirates

CAPTAIN WILLIAM KIDD’S LAST WORDS
My name was Captain Kidd, when I sail’d , when I sail’d , And so
wickedly I did, God’s laws I did forbid, When I sail’d , when I sail’d
. I roam’d from sound to sound, And many a ship I found, And then I
sunk or burn’d , When I sail’d . I murder’d William Moore, And laid
him in his gore, Not many leagues from shore, When I sail’d . Farewell
to young and old, All jolly seamen bold, You’re welcome to my gold,
For I must die, I must die. Farewell to Lunnon town, The pretty girls
all round, No pardon can be found, and I must die, I must die,
Farewell, for I must die. Then to eternity, in hideous misery, I must
lie, I must lie.

SHIP’S NAMES, A STORY BY ITSELF
In British Admiralty Court papers, the vessel is mentioned several
times as ‘The Quidah Merchant’, alias The Kary Merchant. Most likely,
‘Cara’ is misspelled Kary ‘Quedagh’ is derived from Sultanate Kedah.
It was common to give geographical names to ships ‘ India Merchant,
Armenian Merchant or Surat Merchant What is Kary Merchant? One
hypothesis is that the Kalantar family, owners of the vessel, had a
monopoly, granted by the East India Company, over trade of garnets in
England. In Armenian, Kary Merchant is stone merchant.

Assyrian Genocide Center Issues Statement on Sweden’s Genocide Recognition

Just 10 days ago that the United States House of Representatives’
Committee on Foreign Affairs have voted on the recognition of the
Armenian Genocide. The decision was upheld by just one vote majority.

Yesterday, the Swedish Parliament had debated the motion to recognize
the Assyrian, Armenian and, Greek genocide for long hours. Once again,
the resolution was passed by one vote. The Turkish Government did not
delay to take the expected stand. Soon after the decision became
known, the Foreign Affairs Minister of Turkey Mr. Davutoglu, upon his
direction recalled its Swedish Ambassador back to Turkey. If this
trend continues, Turkey will soon be calling back its ambassadors one
by one. This will continue on until the moment Turkey will decide to
face up to its past acts and start to reconcile with them.

The official assertion of Turkey is to leave the matter for history
and the historians. In this way, the matter would lose its interest
and soon be forgotten. However, what the victims of the genocide are
voicing in their claims was well different. The fact is the genocide
is a very serious matter. It is a crime committed against humanity. An
event like this cannot be left for the historians. Furthermore,
independent historians as well as genocide scholars and academics
attest it with available archival materials in hand. The International
Association of Genocide Scholars issued a sample archive on the
Assyrian, Armenian and Greek Genocide on December, 2007.

In yesterday’s voting Turkey became the looser. The winners were the
victims of the genocide. In a way justice took place. To deny the fact
is twice to be killed. Yesterday’s voting phenomena that took place in
Sweden was conviction to condemn Turkey’s continued denial mentality.

Yes, the decision was taken with 131 votes against 130. However, the
one vote majority does not reflect the reality and it may be
misleading. The fact is all those who voted against the motion did not
claim nor say that the genocide did not happen. All of them were
saying yes the genocide took place, however a majority of them said we
need to be loyal to the Coalition Government’s decision and others
were fearing a yes vote would jeopardize the relations with Turkey.

All these developments indicate that Turkey will have more difficulty
in the international arena while it carries the heavy burden of the
genocide. Furthermore it will make it harder for its progress in
democracy. Turkey has no other option but to reconcile with its past
acts. Otherwise, it will end up with pulling its consulates from the
European countries everyday and eventually every other country.

Ten days ago the United States House of Representatives’ Committee on
Foreign Affairs recognized the geoncide. Today the Swedish Parliament
has conveyed it. Tomorrow the parliaments of other countries will
continue to follow suit till Turkey stops to cover up its guilt and
start to recognize the genocide it committed against the Assyrians,
Armenians, Greeks.
