Dominant parliamentary faction disrupts meeting to discuss Shushi Declaration

ArmInfo. The dominant parliamentary faction Civil Contract has thwarted the opposition's attempt to convene a special meting of Armenia's Parliament on Wednesday, to discuss a draft statement on the ratification of the so-called Shushi  Declaration by the Azerbaijani and Turkish Parliaments. The draft was  introduced by the Armenia opposition faction.

Armenia's Parliament was to hold a special meeting on the initiative  of the Armenia opposition faction, on Wednesday, to discuss the  Shushi Declaration. The opposition faction proposed that the RA  National Assembly issue a statement condemning the ratification of  the Shushi  Declaration and "expressing deep concern over the  ratification by the  Azerbaijani and Turkish Parliaments of the  declaration the  Azerbaijani and Turkish presidents signed in the  Azerbaijan-occupied  Shushi on June 15, 2021." Back on June 15 and  17, 2021, Armenia's foreign office issued relevant statements.  According to Mr Arsenyan, the statements contained all the key points  incorporated in the opposition-proposed draft. He believes the  Parliament's position must be identical to that of the foreign  office.  In their 2021-2026 programme of action Armenia's authorities  declared a policy of long-lasting peace and stability and are  implementing their foreign policy in line with the programme, with a  view of causing no harm to the declared policy.

The opposition-proposed document reads that despite the assurances   that the Shushi Declaration is not aimed at a third party, its   content is obviously against the Armenian people.  "It sets the   strategic goals of the two nations that carried out a 44-day   aggression against the Republic of Artsakh, against Artsakh's  self-determination, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the   Republic of Armenia, and the rights of the Armenian people, which   survived a genocide and was scattered throughout the world," Mr   Tevanyan said.

The wordings concerning the "Zangezur corridor" contained in the  declaration are evidence that Turkey and Azerbaijan are reaching   public agreements on implementation of joint expansionist programmes.   The authors of the statement also condemn the Azerbaijani-Turkish  agreement on struggling against international recognition of the   Armenian Genocide by distorting the essence of the problem and   turning it into a subject of historical research.

"The Shushi Declaration is not based on the UN Charter or the   OSCE-approved security principles. Rather, it is based on the 'ethnic   security' approach, which is in conflict with the fundamental   international legal norms. According to the Vienna Convention on the   Law of Treaties of 1969, all the international treaties that are in   conflict with the imperative international legal norms are not   legitimate. The provocative and destructive Shushi Declaration is   unacceptable to the Republic of Armenia. It is a serious challenge to  regional and global security, which does not contribute to our   region's peaceful development, is in conflict with normalization of   Armenian-Turkish relations without preconditions and arouses serious   doubts about official Ankara's real intentions," the draft statement   reads.

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 1, ARMENPRESS. Russia is thoroughly analyzing the U.S. response to its European security proposals, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday, adding that it has already become “clear” that the US has disregarded Russia’s “fundamental” concerns following crunch talks between the two sides, RT reports.

Putin said that the American response is lacking any “adequate” considerations of three key demands put forward by Russia, including a demand that NATO not expand further to the east. The Russian President was speaking during a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Moscow.

Washington only focuses on nations’ right to freely choose the manner of ensuring their own security, including through alliances they deem necessary, the Russian president said. However, he argued that the US disregards another key principle of European security, which says that no nation should be allowed to enhance its own security at the expense of another's.

Edgar Ghazaryan comments on Pashinyan’s latest news conference

Armenia – Jan 31 2022

Former Chief of Staff of Armenia’s Constitutional Court Edgar Ghazaryan has shared two photos of Nikol Pashinyan’s news conferences in 2020 and 2022, saying they indicate “the pathetic position an inept journalist can find himself in, having failed to assess his abilities and becoming a scourge for his country and people.”

“Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had an opportunity to answer media questions in Kapan on January 25, 2020. At that time, he had not yet managed to destroy our homeland, had not yet signed the capitulation document, had not yet ordered [then Defense Minister] Vagharshak Harutyunyan to bring Azerbaijanis to Armenia and allow them to establish control over the Goris-Kapan highway,” he wrote on Facebook on Monday.

“On that day, he had the opportunity to travel from Goris to Kapan, which had been created for him by the people he criticized during his press conference, boasting of his "100 achievements", which included the fining of his spouse by police and the discovery of a panther in the Armenian mountains. At the time, he could still enjoy sitting in front of numerous journalists.

“Just two years later, on January 24, 2022, he was no longer able to get to Kapan via the Goris-Kapan highway.

“By 2022, he had handed over our homeland to the enemy, led thousands of young people to their deaths and destroyed the entire state administration system. In the meantime, he renovated the mansion that was seized from Serzh Sargsyan and now serves as his residence, bought new armored cars worth several million dollars and, accompanied by hundreds of bodyguards and policemen, managed to get to his newly renovated office to make pro-enemy statements in front of just one journalist for two hours,” Ghazaryan said.

Armenia – Jan 31 2022

Armenia’s Minister of High-Tech Industry Vahagn Khachatryan on Monday neither confirmed nor denied media reports suggesting that he is the ruling Civil Contract party’s presidential candidate.

Earlier on Sunday, the Public TV Company reported that the issue of Khachatryan’s possible nomination was discussed at the board meeting of the party.

Speaking with reporters, Khachatryan underlined that President Armen Sarkissian’s resignation will take effect on Tuesday if he does not withdraw it by the time.

"It won’t be appropriate for me to make any comments today. He still has an opportunity to withdraw his resignation," he said.

In the meantime, Khachatryan noted that he meets all the requirements for a president envisaged by the Armenian Constitution, highlighting he is above 40 years of age and an official with a track record.

“In these circumstances, I presume I could be on the list [of presidential candidates] given that I am a member of the current government and the political team,” he said.

Asked if he has received a proposal from the prime minister, the minister said that "such a conversation has not yet taken place."

Khachatryan noted that he stopped his party activities after the 2017 elections and considers himself non-partisan.

YEREVAN, JANUARY 26, ARMENPRESS. Armenian customs officers seized an “unprecedented” amount of smuggled mobile phones at the Yerevan airport’s cargo storage.

The State Revenue Committee (SRC) said that its detectives were tipped off that smugglers will be attempting to bring in the cargo from a Eurasian Economic Union member-state through a postal service company.

SRC officers found the 1328 mobile phones worth nearly $600,000 at the cargo storage facility of the Yerevan’s Zvartnots airport. The cargo was smuggled by air from Russia, with all parcels having the same labels. Apart from mobile phones, the smugglers attempted to import tablets, e-cigarettes and accessories for mobile phones.

The cargo was confiscated amid a criminal investigation, the SRC said.
