POPE OF ROME JOHN PAUL II: `I PRAY FOR PRESIDENT ILHAM ALIYEV AND THE
PEOPLE OF AZERBAIJAN’
[November 19, 2004, 20:59:18]

Head of the Vatican State said this in his residence when he received
religious leaders from Azerbaijan – head of the Caucasus Moslems
Clerical Office Sheik-Ul-Islam Allahshukur Pashazade, Bishop
Alexander of Baku in the region of the Caspian Sea, part of the
Russian Orthodox Church and head of the Jewish Comminute of the
Mountain Semyon Ikhiilov, on 18 November.

The Pope of Rome has expressed regret for continuation of conflicts
in the Caucasus, AzerTAj reported, referring to the website of
Vatican. He said: `No one has the right to present or use religions
as instruments of intolerance, as means of aggression, violence or
death. On the contrary, the friendship and reciprocal esteem among
different religions is a rich resource of authentic progress and
peace’.

Pope of Rome John Paul II, on behalf of the meeting participants,
called for an end to violence causing fratricide and set out on the
path of love and justice.

Noting that he prays for President Ilham Aliyev and the entire people
of Azerbaijan, the Pope has said: `I hope with all my heart that
peace returns to Azerbaijan, and the conflict in Nagorno Karabakh is
resolved soon. This challenge, as well as others, should be addressed
with good will and a true spirit of reconciliation’.

Freedom is acceptable as long as it does not limit other persons’
freedom. Modern Armenian society seems to have forgotten it. This
especially concerns the youth which not only discards any innovations,
but also tries to fight them all down. One of the victims of that
`aggression’ is the Armenian alternative art.

We all know what is an alternative. But there is little information
about the alternative art. It is no surprise. The alternative culture
is in its formation period, but already faces strong
opposition. Alternative art is apart of culture seeking new ways and
principles for exploring human inner world. Usually it comes across
typical approaches: radicalism.

This is why it is not wide spread. One of the principles of
alternative art says: `you can take it or you can denounce it.’ But
the Armenian youth regards it as evil for the country. Sometimes
alternative art is accused of having satanic elements. But all other
branches of art and science have it, too. So do we come do denounce
them allâ=80¦?

Many people explain this hatred to the alternative art, saying that it
destroys national mentality and routineâ=80¦ They claim to be
traditionalists. But does it mean that we have to keep to the Turkish
music type and to vulgarizing out language? Surely, tradition should
be in the basis of any art arising.

Same is true to the alternative art. The same music should be based on
popular tunes. The alternative art, as well as alternative science
believe that everything must spring from national roots. Naturally,
this art is denounced by classics supporters It is unclear, however,
why this is said by people who keep to classic only in clothsâ=80¦

Today in all the civilized countries there are alternative art
centers. There is a couple in Armenia, too, but they are still
underground. Anyways, life proves that nothing stays underground too
long.

UCLA AGSA hosts 4th annual Mentorship Series event for Armenian UCLA
undergraduates

Westwood, CA – On November 17th 2004, the Armenian Graduate Students
Association of UCLA will hold its fourth annual Mentorship Series event
for the undergraduate Armenian Students Association of UCLA. This event
is part of UCLA AGSA’s continuing effort to reach out to Armenian
undergraduate students as well as guests and provide them with knowledge
about pursuing higher degrees of education.

The Mentorship Series consists of an interactive panel discussion wherein
graduate students from a broad variety of fields, including, but not
limited to, Law, Medicine, Near Eastern Languages & Cultures, Dentistry,
and various Biological Sciences, will share their experiences and thoughts
with undergraduates of the ASA as well as numerous invited student groups.
The undergraduates, in turn, get to express their questions and concerns
with respect to the professional aspirations they are considering.

“Having once and continuing to benefit from sound advice and guidance in
terms of graduate study, we feel it is our privileged duty to similarly
spread the knowledge to those who are interested in furthering their
educational endeavors,” commented James Hagop Tabibian, Project Director
of the Mentorship Series. This will be the fifth such event put on
within the last four years, thus several years of planning, execution,
and improvement have transpired since the Mentorship Series was created.
Additionally, its popularity and efficacy have been cultivated to the
extent that just one week ago, a very similar event was organized, upon
request, for the ASA of USC.

Topics such as application processes, daily life as a graduate, and
curricula will be addressed along with any questions specifically asked by
the attending undergraduate students. “Our goal is to provide our
audience with the knowledge and ability to decide on and enter the field
that is best for them and also dispel any myths they may have heard
regarding different graduate disciplines” said Tabibian. “It also
doesn’t hurt to get these ideas across with a touch of personal flavor
from usa young, dynamic group like them.”

Glendale: Armenian issues focus of forum

Armenian issues focus of forum

Glendale News Press, CA
Nov 9 2004

Better insight of business and cultural patterns will be the topic of
upcoming panel.

By Ryan Carter, News-Press and Leader

GLENDALE — Understanding business and other demographic patterns
among Armenians, so that cities, schools and corporations can more
efficiently cater to them, will be the focus of a forum Wednesday.

The forum, “Dynamics of the Armenian Community: Access to
Opportunities,” will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the NestlĂ©
building, 800 N. Brand Blvd. The forum will include a panel of local
leaders, who will talk about census information, workforce
demographics and marketing initiatives that affect Armenian
businesses and consumers.

“There’s a lot of business here, and there’s a lot of people
wondering what the demographics of the [Armenian] population are and
what the business atmosphere is,” said Joe Dermenjian, president of
the Glendale-based Armenian-American Chamber of Commerce, which along
with the Krikorian Marketing Group has organized the forum. “With the
various speakers attending, we thought we could share all this
information with the public.”

The panelists will include Glendale Mayor Bob Yousefian; Greg
Krikorian, president of the Glendale Unified School District; and
Glendale Community College District Trustee Ara Najarian. Jerry Wong,
information service specialist for the U.S. Census, Los Angeles
Region, will also speak.

Krikorian said his message will touch on the district’s 29,000-strong
student population, 10,500 of whom are of Armenian decent.

“When you understand your student population, you can not only better
serve them, but also better understand the future of the community,”
he said.

But Krikorian, also the president of Krikorian Marketing Group, said
the significance of Glendale’s densely Armenian population goes
beyond the school district. Businesses are looking to target the
population as a market.

Even the knowledge of Armenian Christmas, which falls on Jan. 6, can
make a difference in marketing, sales campaigns and ultimately sales
receipts, Krikorian said. But even marketing is more complex than
first glance.

“The Armenian population is diverse,” he said. “Understanding it is
like understanding the Asian community, because it’s very diverse
within itself. In those cultures, you can’t target with one message.
You have Armenians from Iran, Russia, the Middle East, France,
America. You have multiple [Armenian] communities within the society
here — not just in Glendale.”

The event caters to business groups, consumers, school and municipal
leaders, but all are invited, Dermenjian said.

Krikorian said the knowledge of how that market works could be
invaluable — even profitable.

“If you look at the purchasing demographics in Glendale, it’s
tremendous,” Krikorian said, stressing the diversity within the
Armenian community. “If you look at how many home buyers and
customers of Armenian descent who have purchased homes, automobiles
and other retail in this community, you are talking hundred of
millions of dollars of not only revenue but tax dollars, which in
turn supports our police, fire and school districts.”

Loving hands bake rich tradition

Loving hands bake rich tradition

*BY TAMMY STABLES BATTAGLIA*
FREE PRESS SPECIAL WRITER

/November 4, 2004/

As her wrinkled hands gently press the triangle of traditional Armenian
cheese turnover dough, Natalie Papazian talks about putting her heart —
and the future of her church — into its creation.

Of course, cheese fills the inside of all 3,636 boregs, the flaky
pastries made for the 42nd year of St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic
Church’s annual fall festival this weekend in Dearborn.

But the aging ladies of the church began handing down the tradition to
younger members this year, teaching them the technique and love involved
in cooking for their church.

“This is from the bottom of our hearts, to do something to give back to
the Lord,” said Papazian, 70, of Redford Township. “I would do anything
for our church.”

Papazian, about 30 older members and a handful of younger church members
meet every Tuesday and Thursday to make food for the festival. The women
have been cooking and baking since July, preparing baked goods,
meatballs, meat pies and other traditional Armenian food and freezing
them for the festival.

From 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, St. Sarkis
will serve about 2,000 dinners and sell hundreds of take-home bags.

The festival will also have a gift shop, a children’s craft room and
live traditional Armenian music.

Papazian’s eyes fill with tears and she chokes up as she describes the
joy she feels teaching the young women how to knead choreg, pronounced
CHORE-egg — a sweet, tender yeast roll served as a breakfast pastry or
snack with olives and cheese.

Seena Karapetian, 22, of West Bloomfield, whose grandfather was one of
St. Sarkis’ founding members, is proud to be learning about her
heritage. The senior, who is studying elementary education at Wayne
State University, has joined the elders periodically since summer. She
said the women give her and her friends the gift of Armenian identity
with every kufta — seasoned beef and bulgar-stuffed meatballs — they
teach her how to create.

“We always joke we should dip their hands in gold,” Karapetian said. “We
want to keep going the traditions of our church and our culture any way
we can.”

The festival draws many non-Armenian guests by using the international
language of food, said the Rev. Daron Stepanian, pastor of St. Sarkis
since 2000. He said the outreach creates an appreciation of Armenian
food in the same way everyone enjoys Italian pizza and the traditional
fare of China.

“To show the Armenian ethnic dishes are something to present to others:
It’s a pride,” he said.

The food sale is also the single biggest annual fund-raiser for the
church. By the time the last piece of lahmajoon, commonly referred to as
Armenian pizza, is gone Sunday, the church will have netted between
$40,000 and $50,000.

This year, the church also made an investment in the future, Stepanian
said.

“In this day, little by little, as the elders are going away, it gets
harder for everyone to do the baking,” Stepanian said. “They’re trying
to bake what their mothers, their grandmothers have been baking. Now
that bridge we are trying to build.”

Un Essai Sur Les Atrocites Perpetrees Par l’Empire Ottoman Parait

La Croix
28 octobre 2004

arrière-plan historique.

Nomination On Party Tickets In Karabakh

NOMINATION ON PARTY TICKETS IN KARABAKH

Azat Artsakh – Nagorno Karabakh Republic (NKR)
27 Oct 04

The National Assembly of NKR passed the NKR Electoral Code at the first
reading. According to the code along with constituencies candidates to
parliament will be nominated on party tickets as well. The project was
introduced by member of parliament Artur Mossiyan who suggested the
following correlation for the parliament consisting of 33 members:
17 seats for party tickets and 16 seats for constituencies. The
leader of the faction of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Vahram
Balayan suggested having the parliament 100 per cent elected from
party tickets. The members of the faction of the Democratic Liberal
Union as well as the speaker of the National Assembly Oleg Yessayan
suggested the following correlation: 11 from party tickets and
22 from constituencies. Apparently there is a disagreement among
the parliamentary forces concerning the number of the seats in the
parliament but all the members of parliament think that the law should
be worked out duly in order to hold the 2005 elections to parliament
in accordance with the new law. The members of parliament have not
come to a decision on the participation of the army servicemen,
refugees and new settlers in the polls. The second reading will take
place in November.
