and Syria.

Torossyan said that Armenian-Syrian relations will stably develop
irrespective of the current developments in the region. He said that
economy and trade are very important spheres of cooperation for the
two countries. Torossyan said that Armenian-Syrian interparliamentary
cooperation is actively developing and expressed hope that numerous

Nagorno-Karabakh dismisses Council of Europe’s warning

Nagorno-Karabakh dismisses Council of Europe’s warning

AP Worldstream
Aug 06, 2004

The Nagorno-Karabakh enclave on Friday bristled at the Council of
Europe’s advice to refrain from holding local elections, saying it
would run its own affairs.

Walter Schwimmer, the secretary general of the 45-nation Council, has
voiced regret that the enclave, that has broken off from Azerbaijan,
would hold municipal elections set for Sunday.

“One sided actions are counter-productive,” Schwimmer said in a
statement, adding that the status of Nagorno-Karabakh should should be
decided through talks.

The Nagorno-Karabakh authorities responded Friday, saying that they
need to have a full-fledged government. “We don’t think that the
international community and the European organizations in particular
would be interested in the absense of authority in Nagorno-Karabakh,”
they said in a statement.

Earlier this week, Nagorno-Karabakh launched a 10-day military
exercise that drew angry criticism from Azerbaijan, which said the
maneuvers could hamper the peace process.

The Armenian Foreign Ministry returned the criticism Friday, saying
that the “bellicose Azerbaijani statements” were fueling tensions.

Armenian-backed forces won control of Nagorno-Karabakh, a largely
ethnic Armenian enclave in Azerbaijan, in a 1988-94 war that killed
some 30,000 people and drove a million from their homes.

Despite a cease-fire, the two countries continue to face off across a
demilitarized zone, and shooting occasionally erupts. No final
settlement has been reached, and the conflict continues to aggravate
economic troubles and threaten unrest in Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Defamation Of Christianity – Anti-Semitism, Christendom And The Holocaust
By Bruce Walker (02/13/2004)

We all know that Christian anti-Semitism caused the Holocaust, right?
The story goes something like this: (1) Christians, from the earliest
days, were anti-Semitic; (2) Christians engaged in unprovoked
persecution of Jews in the ancient and medieval world; (3) Christians
encouraged massacres against Jews that desensitized Christendom to
the Holocaust; (4) Men raised as Christians committed the Holocaust;
(5) Christians ignored the Holocaust while it happened and denied the
Holocaust after it happened.

Baseball allows three strikes and `You’re out!’ Football gives teams
four downs to keep their drive alive. But let us be generous and give
this particularly noxious defamation of Christianity five chances to
be right. It is still defamation.

Christians were anti-Semitic?

Christianity has never been `anti-Semitic.’ The first Christians were
Jews. The next Christians were Semitic people, even if they were not
Jews. The model of racial moral superiority adopted by the National
Socialist German Workers Party resembled Judaism, not Christianity
(although Nazi evil was as hostile and incompatible with the
righteousness required by Judaism as with the tolerance required by
Christianity.)

Racism was condemned as sin in human history first by Christians.
Outside Christian theology, racism was the norm. Why, then, describe
the conflicts between Christians and Jews in the ancient and medieval
world as `anti-Semitic’? Simple: it creates the false impression that
differences between Jews and Christians sowed the seeds of Nazi
racial policies.

Christians engaged in unprovoked persecution Jews in the ancient and
medieval world?

The first three centuries of Christianity was one long religious
holocaust by pagan Rome against Christians. When pagan Rome was
scattering the Jewish people in the Diaspora, this vile though grand
empire was torturing Christians to death. Seldom noted is that Jews,
ten percent of the population of the Empire, sometimes helped
persecute Christians.

Constantine the Great may have been converted to Christianity on his
deathbed, but he was profoundly influenced by Christianity years
before, which led him to proclaim the Edict of Milan in 313 A.D. This
edict granted religious toleration to Jews, Christians and all faiths
within the Roman Empire.

The diverse peoples of the Roman Empire were not forced to become
Christians. These cosmopolitan peoples were familiar with many other
moral and metaphysical systems, including Judaism. The many people of
the Roman Empire embraced Christianity as something far better than
they had ever seen before.

This did not lead to perfect moral behavior, but Christian doctrine
denies that we will ever be sinless. What naturally did occur,
however, was an improvement in the moral conditions within the Roman
Empire. Under the increasing influence of Christian morals, Rome did
not inflict upon the Jewish people crimes like the Diaspora and the
destruction of the Second Temple, the Babylonian Captivity and the
destruction of the First Temple, the Assyrian extermination or
disintegration of ten of the twelve tribes of Israel and Judah, or
the Egyptian oppression of Hebrew slaves which led to the Exodus,
Torah and the Promised Land itself.

Christophobes do not even pretend that Roman Christians were
committing these sorts crimes, although these crimes were so common
in the ancient world. Instead Christophobes fast forward to the
Justinian codification of Roman law, which included discrimination
against Jews. Legal discrimination, of course, was ubiquitous in the
ancient world. Almost every people in the ancient world, including
Jews against goyim.

The sort of murderous crimes which smell of religious holocaust,
however, do not appear in a Christian Roman Empire which had large
numbers of subject Jews. The first episode of religious genocide
between these two great faiths took place in 614 A.D., when Jerusalem
was captured by Persians and Jews, who together methodically tortured
and exterminated more than 90,000 Christian men, women and children.

Christians engaged in massacres of Jews which desensitized
Christendom to the Holocaust?

Aside from the Zoroastrian-Jewish extermination of Christians in 614,
other religions did engage in mass exterminations of other peoples
because of their faith. Overwhelmingly, the victimizers were
conquering Moslems and the victims were Jews, Christians,
Zoroastrians and Hindus who had the misfortune to be in the war of
Islam militant.

Yet Moorish Spain is often presented as a model of tolerance,
suggesting that Christian Spain, after the Christian majority had
expelled the Moslem overlords, was somehow kind and gentle and
Christian Spain vicious and coarse. Why? Bat Ye’or, the Jewish
historian who came from Egypt and who is the greatest modern student
of Islamic persecution of others, describes the ideal often presented
in history books of a wonderful, idyllic Islamic Spain as a `pious
lie’ by Jews to make Christians, who never did anything nearly as bad
as Moslems in Spain, look worse than Moslems.

The expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492 is described as a comparable
episode, but of course it was not. Isabella and Ferdinand were simply
reimposing edicts made by prior Moslem rulers requiring that Jews
become Moslems, convert or die. The greatest difference is that
Christians did not engage in an organized, sanctioned slaughter of
Spanish Jews.

The tragic massacres of hundreds of Jews in the Rhineland during the
First Crusade are the next `example’ of how dangerous Christianity is
to Jews. The events are not disputed. Mobs of peasants traveled from
town to town killing entire Jewish communities. Seldom noted is that
these mobs were strongly opposed by the bishops and archbishops of
the towns in which these several massacres took place.

Bishops and archbishops took in Jews, hid Jews, and tried in every
way possible to prevent these murders. The mobs tried smashed the
doors of bishoprics and tried to kill Christian clergy. The courage
of bishops and archbishops against the wrath of wild mobs changed the
course of these campaigns: mobs looking for Jews to kill avoided
towns which had a strong Christian presence.

Saint Bernard warned crusaders that killing Jews for being Jews was
like killing Christ. Popes excommunicated those who called for the
murder of Jews. Hardly fodder for holocausts, is it?

Cossacks in the 17th Century engaged in some of the most unspeakable
crimes against Jews in human history. This is also cited as `proof’
that the differences between Christians and Jews led to mass murder
of Jews. The Cossacks, however, were ruthless to virtually everyone,
including other Cossacks. Jews were not the first nor the last
peoples who suffered horribly at the hands of Cossacks. Moreover,
Cossacks were notoriously irreligious.

Salient is the reaction to these crimes within Christendom. Europe in
the 1600s was not yet `modern.’ Nevertheless, Christendom in the
1600s strongly and unequivocally condemned Cossack atrocities against
Jews. There was no denial and no support for this holocaust against
Jews by Christendom.

Men raised as Christians committed the Holocaust

Did men raised as Christian murder millions of Jews? Yes, but what is
unstated matters immensely: men raised as Christians, and who
emphatically and contemptuously reviled Christianity, murdered
millions of Jews. The only people in Europe who opposed the Holocaust
when they could have saved their lives by being quiet were Christians
in Europe. The only people who spoke out against the Holocaust while
it was happening were Christians.

No one in 1945 seriously believed that Christianity `caused’ the
Holocaust, but many people believed that the evil which Hitler
represented was ended by Christians. There are dozens of examples of
the deep gratitude which Jews felt toward serious Christians in this
hellish part of human history, but perhaps one example sums it up
best: Rome has the oldest synagogue, perhaps, on earth; after the war
was won and Nazism was defeated, the Chief Rabbi of Rome converted to
Christianity.

If Christians `caused’ the Holocaust, then who caused the greater
holocaust in the Soviet Union a dozen years earlier? This greater
holocaust was not caused by serious Jews who seriously believed in
the theology of Judaism, but it is worth noting that Judaism and
Jewishness is no more perfect a vaccine against these sorts of crimes
than Christianity.

Lazar Kaganovich, probably the greatest mass murderer in modern
history, the Soviet Himmler, an atheist Marxist, considered himself
Jewish; Kaganovich spoke Yiddish; he was raised as an observant Jew.
Yagoda, the sadistic head of the Soviet secret police, was Jewish.
Men who reject the moral precepts of Christianity and of Judaism will
commit unthinkable crimes against humanity. Kaganovich and Himmler
had the same theology: man is god.

Christians want to deny the Holocaust?

The myth that somehow America and Britain `denied’ or `concealed’ the
Holocaust is more than just odd. Consider what happened on December
17, 1942. Th allied governments of every Christian nation in Europe
and America denounced the mass murder of Jewish in occupied Europe
`in the strongest possible terms.’

This mass murder was described as a `bestial policy of cold-blooded
extermination.’ Anthony Eden introduced the resolution in the House
of Commons, and a Labour MP asked that all members `rise in their
places and stand in silence in protest of this disgusting behavior’
Lord Samuel, a Jewish peer and former Leader of the Labor Party sad
`These events are an outcome of quite deliberate, planned, conscious
cruelty of human beings.’ Is Holocaust denial?

America and Britain (we tend to forget that Britain was not just a
predominately Christian nation, it is a formally Christian nation:
Christianity, specifically Anglicanism and Presbyterianism, are the
government religions of England and Scotland respectively)
deliberately decided that defeating Nazism in Europe was much more
important than defeating Japanese Imperialism in Asia.

Japan had more ability to actually threaten the island democracies of
Anglo-America, because the Japanese fleet and naval aviation were
superb. Japan was exterminating in unthinkable ways millions of
Chinese and other Asian peoples.

If the democracies of Anglo-America were indifferent to that enormous
crime we call the Holocaust – by the way…what do we call the
holocaust of Chinese by Japan? I seem to have forgotten – then these
Christian nations certainly showed that indifference in inexplicable
ways.

Christians as Christians have been condemning the murder of Jews for
more two thousand years. This has often not reciprocated. The first
religious and racial genocide in Europe during the 20th Century was
not the murder of Jews but the murder of Christians within the
Turkish empire.

Almost every horror later used by Lazar Kaganovich against innocent,
overwhelmingly Christian, people, and even later used by Nazis
against innocent, largely Jewish, people were used first against
Christians in this forgotten holocaust.

Packing people into cattle cars, torturing innocents, liquidating
children – all these things happened in Armenia before the Gulag, and
in the Gulag before the Nazi death camps. As with the Holocaust,
Christians who were not in harm’s way risked their lives to save the
innocent. Also, to his enormous credit, an American Jew, Henry
Morgenthau, worked bravely and tirelessly to help these wretched
victims.

But some people also denied this first experiment in racial and
religious genocide. In 1918 Ben Gurion, the first president of the
modern State of Israel, and Ben-Zvi published a book projecting an
Eretz Yisrael in the Ottoman Empire. Future President Ben Gurion says
in that book: `it must be said, to the credit of the Turks, that
their rulers behaved toward the conquered with a degree of tolerance
and generosity which is unparalleled in the history of Christian
peoples of the period.’ Ben Gurion does not mention a single world
about the Armenian genocide.

The extermination of the Christian Armenians had been preceded by
decades of mass murders of Christians in the Turkish Empire. How did
Theodor Herzl, the father of Zionism, feel the Fifth Zionist Congress
in 1901 should react to these decades of torture and mass murder of
Christians? Herzl urged the Congress to send a message to Abdul Hamid
II (know as the `Bloody Sultan’ for his massacres of Armenians) which
had an `expression of dedication and gratitude which all the Jews
feel regarding the benevolence which his Highness the Sultan has
always shown them.’

The best and the worst moral attitude

Jews should want Christians to be deep and sincere Christians.
Christians should want Jews to take Judaism seriously. Defaming
Christianity does not lead to a safer, kinder world for Jews. It
leads to monsters like Bormann and Eichman. The best protection
against holocausts are men like pious Christians like George
Washington and Pope John Paul II. The best protection is honest,
decent Jews like Henry Morgenthau BatYe’or .

Monsters like Kaganovich, craven and cynical creeps like Ben Gurion
are found in all races, all faiths and every age. Some are CINOs
(Christians In Name Only) and some are JINOs (Jews In Name Only.) One
of the best ways to seed and to nourish this sort of evil is to
defame Christianity – like pretending that the Holocaust is the
logical consequence of serious Christianity.

ILLEGAL DIAMOND, EMERALD TRADE CHANNEL SHUT IN BASHKIRIA

UFA, AUGUST 5 (RIA Novosti) – Operation of a criminal ring engaged
for a long time in illegal gemstones trade has been ended in
Bashkiria (federal republic in the southern Urals), the press service
of the FSB directorate for Bashkiria informed on Thursday.

According to the FSB, several residents of Sterlitamak arranged the
channel of delivery of diamonds and emeralds from fields in Siberia
and the Ural region.

The FSB has carried out the operation “check purchase”, placing its
agent as a wholesale buyer.

As a result, three persons have been detained, and natural diamonds
and an emerald (total weight 35 grammes, or 150 carats) were seized.
On fact of the illegal turnover the republican prosecutor’s office
has begun a criminal case.

Investigation has found that, alongside illegal trade in gemstones in
Bashkiria, the group arranged their transportation to the Krasnodar
region to be smuggled out to Armenia for cutting.

The criminals brought in gems themselves or through couriers. Their
close relatives were engaged in this or that way, selling gems or
securing the deals, the FSB press service said. The network
functioned smoothly for three years.

Caucasus crossword puzzle

Kavkaz Center, Turkey

Caucasus crossword puzzle

Even if you assume that it is a major turf war going on in the
Caucasus, America could not allow another evident failure happening
after the fiasco in Iraq. It is always more costly to be fighting
with an Islamic nation directly. And even though America is more
successful in Hollywood studios, it is still good at making troubles
and intrigues in the so-called third world countries.

Russians have it the other way around. There’s plenty of cannon
fodder, and you can send them wherever you want. And the whole
political ruse is in the number of that cannon fodder and in the
number of tanks per square unit.

But it doesn’t mean at all that the two tactics described above have
collided in the Caucasus. Evident failure in South Ossetia and
Abkhazia, which Georgian President Saakashvili is asking for, as the
ordinary citizens believe, is not too obvious unless you take a
little closer look at the logic of the events.

Everybody knows whose protege he is. He was supplied with whatever
necessary in such cases: with money, with military instructors, with
political instructions and with PR through mass media. European
political staff was attached to him so that he could not deviate from
the instructions (and a European wife was found even before that).
While consistently paving the way for their protege, the West is
getting the public opinion trained at the same time. Everybody must
know that once the West patronizes some puppet, then the success is
guaranteed.

Foolish behavior of the so-called «leaders of the Caucasus nations»
looks deplorable in the middle of all of this. They do not have much
of a choice, and the alignment is downright simple. If you do not
want to be dependent on anyone, and if FREEDOM is not a mere empty
word for you, then you should become like first Chechen President
Dudayev, raise a flag with the slogan ‘freedom or death’ and go
ahead. But if you don’t have the guts to defend real independence,
then you should still have enough brains to choose a normal
‘sponsor’.

You have to be ignorant about history and very naïve in politics to
believe in reliability of Russian guardianship. But if they seriously
believe the Kremlin’s today’s leadership, that’s when one must assume
that there is some clinical problem involved.

It is understandable when leaders of South Ossetia or Abkhazia cringe
before Putin. They are the ones who belong to the category of
mentally sick persons mentioned above. But political shortsightedness
of Aslan Abashidze, former leader of breakaway region of Adjaria, was
totally unexpected. A man of noble descent, whose ancestors have
always been in the head of the fight of freedom of Adjaria, a pretty
smart man, all of a sudden believed that Putin would never betray
him. Couldn’t he see it from the record of the Kremlin’s outhouse
‘dumper’?

He ‘dumped’ Castro, he turned in Milosevic and Saddam, and he would
be more than happy to turn in the North Korean leader, but Kim Jong
Il is lucky enough not to depend on Moscow or hope for Moscow. Putin
gave up Central Asia without making too much of a noise. He is giving
up Transdniestria just as quietly too. But why was he not supposed to
give up Adjaria? Just because some Moscow bureaucrats built villas
for themselves down there?

Only after he escaped to Moscow (what a place to escape!), Abashidze
all of a sudden got politically enlightened: turns out Russia has
never had any policies on the Caucasus (!). And now he probably
understands that it would have been much easier to come to an
agreement with Georgian president Saakashvili (who is Georgian of
Armenian descent), rather than allying with those who «do not have
their policies on the Caucasus».

Today’s escalation of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict is a fuss at a
lower level so far. They are pushing one another, they are making
noises, and they excel in little dirty tricks that they do to one
another. Nobody wants to be fighting a war. Fighters for ‘national
independence’ are writing slavish addresses to be accepted back into
the stall of serfs. As far as Russian chauvinist marginals go, they
are smacking their lips when anticipating the coming ‘gathering of
lands’. Their calls are heard in the Russian State Duma (parliament)
«not to be shy and go ahead and join them to us». Many even think
that the Politburo of the past has now reappeared in the Kremlin,
only on a much smaller scale. But today’s dwellers of the Kremlin
have only the ‘not-to-be-shy’ thing left from Politburo of the past.
But their ability to ‘join’ (by force), or ability to ‘retain’ will
never be restored ever again.

To the majority, which is doomed to be constantly deluded, it seems
like there is confrontation between Russian the West going on in the
Caucasus. Although, there are quite a few of those who can guess that
it is a transfer of the Caucasus region to the Western curators going
on in a private manner. But at the same time the ringleaders of
worldwide political mafia have to consider the views of the majority
and this is why it is happening under the guise of fight for areas of
influence.

This kind of concert does not always go smoothly, since you can’t get
all of the idiots initiated into its real goal. You can tell the ones
which ones are ‘initiated’ and which are not from the things that
they say. Georgian Prime Minister Zhvania is one of the ‘initiated’.
He can hardly hold his emotions inside and he reminds that you can’t
jeopardize the agreement between Putin and Saakashvili or the life of
Ossetian and Georgian nations «because of just one idiot». Everybody
understands that South Ossetian leader Kokoity is that ‘one idiot’.
Zhvania is also showing his excessive Armenian caution by not
pointing his finger at the idiot number two, Russian general the
‘peacemaker’. As soon as something went a little wrong against the
scenario, Saakashvili’s nerves began to give. He started panicking
and he came running to his European mother-in-law to complain about
Putin.

That’s where he was probably clamed down and asked not to worry. He
was probably explained what the principles of the dog’s vertical
hierarchy was and that today Putin is the eighth sprocket for G7. He
had to hear that this is what the Western politics is based upon, so
that the delusion of the majority and excessive activities of idiots
could be used to your own advantage. And he was told that you can’t
take the delusion away from the majority right off the bat and you
can’t be counting on the same idiots over and over again.

After little specifications made backstage, after the trips of
resented Saakashvili to England and after sudden arrival of ‘buddy’
Schroeder, Putin organizes an interesting meeting, where the entire
diplomatic corps was invited. They say it was the second case like
that ever since the times of Red Commissars. Back then the situation
was critical. Bolsheviks kept throwing in the slogan ‘Revolution in
Danger!’ But what about today? Supposedly, there was a good reason
why all ambassadors from all countries were gathered.

Russian media quoted Putin’s key phrase, which at first sounds
somewhat contradictory. He proposes to attach a number one priority
to the diplomatic activities in CIS states, and then all of a sudden
he says that one shouldn’t think that Russia is the only country that
has the right to be a leader in these states. Like, we must consider
the reality.

It was probably all clear to those in the auditorium. But we won’t be
able to figure it out that quick. What is it? Aesopian language or
accidental slip of the tongue? If some group of countries is the
number one priority for diplomatic activities, then maximum
strengthening of influence is usually the goal. But if you agree to
the leadership of other countries in the region, then what’s the
point of the ‘prioritized activities’?

It doesn’t sound too clear to ordinary people. But if the G7 pointed
to Putin to quietly move over from that ‘prioritized’ CIS and prepare
a place for someone else, then everything is falling into place and
there is no discrepancy at all. Replacing one leader, even a bad one,
for another, even a good one, is a painful and not easy process. And
this is where prioritized diplomacy is necessary in order to lull the
majority and not to get the ‘uninitiated idiots’ excited before their
time.

But let’s leave the interesting gathering of Russian diplomats behind
and let’s go back to South Ossetia. Let’s imagine a fantastic
situation: Georgia and South Ossetia are left face to face to deal
with each other. Georgia would have never been able to restore its
influence in this part of the Caucasus by using its own power. Even
if this whole thing lasted until the second coming of Christ.
Moreover, if Georgia calls its new patrons for help and South Ossetia
remains without the support from Moscow (with the condition that
Moscow will not be doing nasty things and will not block the Cross
Mountain Pass), then Georgia’s chances would still not have been
increased too much. And only when Saakashvili starts enjoying full
support from his new masters, and when Westernized part of the
population will be strengthened in Ossetia, that’s when the Kremlin
will take its weaponry away and choke Ossetia in a perfidious way
from behind, — and only then South Ossetia will be integrated into
Georgia. And the Kremlin’s perfidy will be the main and determining
condition here. Georgian patchwork quilt cannot be put together
without it.

The political concert is gathering momentum. While this article is
being written, Georgian-Ossetian negotiations are going in full swing
in Moscow. Mass media are squeezing the adrenaline from ordinary
citizens: like, negotiations are going on in «hard… and difficult
conditions, but still…». So far the Georgian side made a proposal «to
disarm unnecessary formations in the conflict zone». The Kremlin’s
‘dumpers’ must treat it with understanding, and then the nature will
take its course…

In this kind of shows somebody has to be made a fool. South Ossetian
leader Kokoity is most fit for this role. Judging by how talkative
and self-satisfied he is, and judging by his thoughtless actions, he
is not going to let anybody else have this role.

Abkhazia will be next. Its leaders are just like Kokoity. Their
statements are just as strong, and they are counting on Moscow the
same way. And their naïve assurance that they can never be overthrown
is the same as well,… since they all have Russian passports…

It’s not too pleasant to be making any predictions. We were just
trying to be guided by the main political tendencies and the logic of
the events. In this temporal world plans and predictions that the
people are making will be fulfilled only as much as Almighty Allah
decides, praise be to Him, and great He is.

ANEC Awards Ancient Armenian Coins to Students

NEW YORK, NY-“Year after year students have watched their peers receive this
award, and I find it very hard not to give this precious award to more
students.” So said the principal of an Armenian school recently. The awards
in question, ancient coins depicting Armenian royalty, are annual gifts
bestowed on a select few students who have excelled in Armenian studies. The
coins, courtesy of the magnanimity of Mr. Gary Setian of Massachusetts, is
awarded by the Armenian National Education Committee (ANEC) and
traditionally presented to the students during their schools’ year-end
pageant. In addition to the awards, ANEC provides the students informative
data about coin collection, courtesy of Dr. Levon Saryan, as well as
information about the kings depicted on the coins. This year, the coins were
those of the Cilician King, Levon I.

“According to medieval historians, Levon received the right to a throne in
1197 when he started striking his royal series coins. The obverse was
patterned after the contemporary bracteates of Henry VI of the Holy Roman
Empire and the reverse displayed a single lion turned to the left. However,
for his coronation he received two crowns, one from Henry VI of the Holy
Roman Empire and another from Alexius III of Byzantium. Upon his coronation,
Levon struck in silver the coronation and regular tram series of coins with
two lions, symbolizing the two crowns sent by the two emperors,” Dr. Saryan
explained.

The coins have been presented this year to students from the following day
and one-day schools.
