Book Review: Children of Armenia

HISTORY
Children of Armenia
A Forgotten Genocide and the Century-Long Struggle for Justice
By Michael Bobelian
Simon & Schuster. 308 pp. $26

Like Native Americans, European Jews and Rwandan Tutsis, Turkish
Armenians seem to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"Children of Armenia," Michael Bobelian’s first book, describes the
Ottoman Empire’s 1915 mass extermination of this Christian minority
without getting bogged down in "G-word" histrionics. "The purpose of
this book is neither to prove the existence nor affirm the veracity of
the Genocide," Bobelian writes: The Armenian holocaust is a historical
fact.

"Children of Armenia" focuses on the Turkish nationalism, world war
weariness, survivor psychology and Cold War squabbling that let the
world forget the unforgettable. Some will flinch at Bobelian’s
lionization of Gourgen Yanikian, an Armenian who shot two Turks in a
revenge plot hatched in the 1970s, but the author stumbles only when
he strays into Armenian exceptionalism, the idea that "no other people
have suffered such a warped fate — a trivialization of their
suffering and a prolonged assault on the authenticity of their
experience." Bobelian should know that if every culture insists on the
supremacy of its own suffering, the world will only grow more jaded
about stopping current horrors. Instead, any book about Armenia — no,
any exploration of any genocide — should pose questions relevant to
today’s ethnic cleansings. Otherwise, who will remember the Sudanese?

Belarus embassy in Azerbaijan: Reports in Armenian media distorted

31 October 2009 [13:55] – Today.Az

Belarus’ embassy in Azerbaijan is confident that the statements made
by Belarus Foreign Minister Sergei Martinov in Armenia have been
distorted, the embassy’s press office said.

`We attentively read the reports posted on Armenian media and are
confident that this is nothing but an attempt to manipulate our
minister’s comments.’

The embassy says these attempts are groundless.

`If one reads the minister’s statements attentively, it is clear that
he underlines importance of solving the conflict by compromise and on
mutually acceptable basis. The minister’s misinterpreted words on the
Armenian websites are false information,’ the embassy said.

Armenian media reported earlier that Belarus Foreign Minister Sergei
Martinov said at the meeting with the students of Yerevan State
University that Belarus does not consider Armenia an aggressor state.

Armenia

On October 28, RA President of the National Assembly Mr. Hovik
Abrahamyan received Mr. Peter Semneby, EU Special Representative for
the South Caucasus.

The sides focused on normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations
without preconditions during the meeting.

Mr. Abrahamyan reaffirmed the position of the Armenian side in
that issue and stressed that the delay of the ratification of the
protocols, which were signed on October 10, by Turkey would deserve
adequate attitude of the Armenian side. In that context, he underscored
that with those protocols Armenia had not undertaken any unilateral
responsibility and had taken that step to create necessary bases for
the establishment of natural relations between the two countries. RA
NA President informed EU special representative that if Turkey did
not ratify those protocols in reasonable period then the Armenian
side would immediately take adequate steps.

Turkey and Armenia are not taking actions behind the closed doors,"
the Turkish Prime Minister Receb Tayyib Erdogan said in an interview
to Al-Jazeera television channel. Erdogan was commenting on the
Turkey-Armenia relations, the Turkish Anadolu news agency reported
with reference to Al-Jazeera.

Turkey and Armenia do not take any action behind the closed doors,
Erdogan said.

Turkish and Armenian foreign ministers Ahmet Davutoglu and Edward
Nalbandian signed the protocols Ankara-Yerevan in Zurich on October 10.

Diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey have been broken due
to Armenia’s claims of an alleged genocide, and its occupation of
Azerbaijani lands. The border between them has been broken since 1993.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan
lost all of Nagorno-Karabakh except for Shusha and Khojali in December
1991. In 1992-93, Armenian armed forces occupied Shusha, Khojali and 7
districts surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed
a ceasefire in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia,
France, and the U.S. – are currently holding the peace negotiations.

The prime minister reiterated his loyalty to promises he sounded at
the Azerbaijani parliament.

ArmIfo. Mayor of Bursa Shahabeddin Garpurt gave a press-conference
during which he commented on the results of investigation ‘on
offence of the Azerbaijani flags during Turkey-Armenia football
match’. As Bakililar.AZ reports, Garpurt said that Head of the Police
was dismissed and two policemen, who threw the Azerbaijani flags
into the trash-cans, were reprimanded. According to the mayor, the
video-materials of the Turkish TV channels, newspapers and electron
media, demonstrating how the Azerbaijani flags were thrown into the
trash-cans, were studied. Garpurt said the scenes were shot by the
policemen. Currently, the video-materials have been sent to Turkey’s
Prosecutor’s Office. The fact is being investigated by the republican
Prosecutor’s Office.

To recall, the incidents with flags are related to October 14 football
match between the Armenian and Azerbaijani national teams. The Turkish
party, under FIFA pressure, banned the presence of the Azerbaijani
flags at the stadium, in response to which the furious and the Police
started to throw the Azerbaijani flags into the trash-can. Then,
they in Azerbaijan started to tear the Turkish flags off. Currently,
both parties start revealing the guilty of non-respect to the national
symbolic.
