ARMENIAN PRESIDENT: NO ISSUES OVER THE RETURN OF TERRITORIES HAVE BEEN DISCUSSED IN THE NEGOTIATING PROCESS WITH ALIYEV

No issues over the return of territories have been discussed in the
negotiating process with Aliyev, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan
said in Zvartnots Airport in response to Aliyev’s statement following
their meeting in Chisinau.

According to the president, in Chisinau "we discussed only
status-related issues."

Remind that Aliyev had announced very significant issues have been
agreed during the recent 5-6 years.

"First of all, the Armenian forces must withdraw from Nagorno-Karabakh
adjacent territories. I can say this is big progress since for the
recent 4-5 years it went about freeing 4, then 5 regions. However,
due to the steps taken during the negotiating process, I can say,
this is agreed already," Aliyev said.

European Armenian federation deplores protocols with Turkey

European Armenian federation deplores protocols with Turkey

03:2012/10/2009

BRUSSELS, October 12 (RIA Novosti) – The European Armenian Federation
for Justice is against the signing of historic accords between Armenia
and Turkey, the chairwoman of the federation said.
Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbanian and his Turkish counterpart
Ahmet Davutoglu signed protocols on diplomatic relations and on
bilateral relations Saturday at Zurich University. The documents are
still to be ratified by parliaments amid continued fierce opposition
from nationalist parties in both countries.

"We support the establishment of relations between Armenia and Turkey,
but we stand against these protocols as they pose a threat to vitally
important interests of Armenia and the Armenian people," Hilda Choboyan
said in a statement.

According to her, such issues as the Turkish genocide of Armenians,
recognition of the borders between Armenia and Turkey as well as the
Nagorny Karabakh conflict were not taken into account during the
signing of the protocols.

"We call on the parliament of Armenia not to ratify the protocols in
their current unjust form," she added.

Turkey demands that Yerevan drop its campaign to have the mass killings
of Armenians by Ottoman Turks in 1915 internationally recognized as
genocide.

Turkey also closed its border with Armenia in 1993 in a show of support
for Muslim ally Azerbaijan, following a bloody conflict over Nagorny
Karabakh between the two republics.

Nagorny Karabakh, a region in Azerbaijan with a largely Armenian
population, has been a source of conflict between the former Soviet
republics since the late 1980s. The province has its own government and
is de facto independent.

Armenia and Turkey agreed to a "roadmap" to normalize their relations
under Swiss mediation this April. The draft pact between the countries
had been backed by the United States and European Union.

Book About Armenians In Turkey Published In Ankara

BOOK ABOUT ARMENIANS IN TURKEY PUBLISHED IN ANKARA

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ A new book released Friday by the Turkish Economic
and Social Studies Foundation (TESEV) focuses on the Armenians of
Turkey and explains various issues, from their historical roots in
Anatolia to the meaning of being an Armenian in Turkey today.

The 600-page "Armenians in Turkey – Congregation, Individual, Citizen"
also explores the depths of Armenians’ relations with the state.

TESEV’s democratization program director, editor-in-chief of Akos
newspaper Etyen Mahcupyan, said the state policy has long been to
ignore the Armenian community in Turkey and that therefore there
is a need to educate the people who do not really know much about
this community.

The book’s four authors, Gunay Goksu Ozdogan, Fusun Ustel, Karin
Karakasli and Ferhat Kentel, said they wanted to go beyond prejudices
against Armenians or overprotecting Armenians. They said that they
aimed at prompting a "rediscovery" process in the Turkish public in
order to better know those who shared mutual values for centuries in
the same land.

Ustel said that in 2000, when they started the book project,
there had been more reactions in the community against Armenians
but that society has been opened up since then with the help of the
democratization process together with Turkey’s accession negotiations
with the European Union.

One perspective that the authors adopted to dissect the Armenian
community in Turkey was to look at how Armenians position themselves
in society as members of a congregation or religious community. The
authors also studied how prejudices against Armenians are fed. In
addition to historical background about Armenians in Anatolia,
the authors also focused on their social lives, including their
associations, marriages, publications and involvement in sports and
the arts.

The researchers conducted in-depth interviews with 40 well-known
members of the Armenian community in Turkey. They also had 12 focus
groups, comprising six to . To understand the religious rituals of
the Armenians, the researchers observed the community in Antakya’s
Vakifli village, Today’s Zaman reported.

Vardevanyan said. "Our party’s press is the most objective," he added,
"We never exaggerate the number of people attending our protests".
