‘Stork Girls,’ ‘Nest Neighbors’ Keep Eye on Armenian Birds

A pair of Armenian researchers locals call the "stork girls" are
recruiting "nest neighbors" in rural villages to help them monitor the
country’s population of the large wading birds, which have
traditionally been a symbol of luck and success in the former Soviet
Republic.

For the past four years, ArmeniaNow reports, young scientists Lusine
Stepanyan and Maro Kochinyan have been visiting "virtually every area
where storks nest in Armenia [to] distribute special calendars among
the residents living near the nests." Participating villagers, known
as "nest neighbors," use the calendars to track when the storks return
to the area and when they start breeding; the first days that
nestlings appear, and then start to fly; and when the storks leave
again, among other data.

Tracking Environmental Change
"We decided to study a widely spread species rather than a rare bird
or a species on the verge of extinction. It would enable us to see how
the changes in the environment affect the number of birds and their
nestlings," Karen Aghababyan, senior avian researcher at American
University of Armenia’s Acopian Environmental Research Center, the
group behind the project, told ArmeniaNow.

Though widespread throughout Armenia, storks are threatened in some
areas by pesticides and heavy metals in the environment, which
accumulate throughout the food chain in the fish and small animals the
big birds eat. Early results of the AUA surveys show that storks in
the Ararat Valley and Vayots Gorge are hatching few or no nestlings,
potentially indicating the illegal use of chemical pesticides.

In general, though, storks seem to be thriving in Armenia, where the
number of nesting pairs and nestlings has gone up over the four years
the "neighbors" have been conducting surveys. According to Aghababyan,
the change may be the unexpected consequence of two environmental
dangers.

Global Warming Gives Stork Populations a Boost
Warming temperatures may have increased local insect populations, in
turn boosting the number of frogs, which storks eat. In addition,
Aghababyan told ArmeniaNow, "in some places, the increase in the
number of storks may also be conditioned by the existence of poultry
and fish farms that are surrounded by large quantities of food wastes’
— with some birds feeding off that waste to such a degree that they
don’t even need to migrate away in the winter.

In addition to providing useful data, the "nest neighbors" project is
increasing local villagers’ connection with nature. Gohar Hayrapetyan,
41, from Hovtashat village in Ararat province, told the news website
that she enjoys watch the storks that nest on a post in her garden. `I
draw parallels with our life," she said. "I watch them building their
nests bringing in twigs, hatching out their young, and then the young
ones leave. Just like people." Via: "Village ‘researchers’ help
monitor storks and environment in Armenia," ArmeniaNow

On Mamedov’s ‘Priceless’ Thoughts

Azerbaijan has once again tried to pass the desirable for reality,
Foreign Ministry Press Secretary Tigran Balayan told NEWS.am,
commenting on the statement by Novruz Mamedov of the Azerbaijani
presidential staff. He stated that Armenia is pressured into making
concessions on Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.

"Mamedov’s ‘priceless’ thoughts indicate he lacks information and
wants to pass the desirable for reality, which has repeatedly been
noted by the OSCE Minsk Group," Balayan said.

He quoted the OSCE MG Co-Chair Matthew Bryza, who stated Mamedov had
not taken part in any meeting of the Armenian-Azerbaijani presidential
meetings. So cannot make any judgments on the negotiation process.

Moscow Demands Halt Of Weapons Shipments To Georgia

MOSCOW DEMANDS HALT OF WEAPONS SHIPMENTS TO GEORGIA

MOSCOW/VIENNA (Europe News)-Western countries must stop weapons
shipments to Georgia, Russia warned on Thursday, on the eve of the
first anniversary of its conflict with Georgia.

In an interview broadcast on Russian media, Foreign Ministry spokesman
Andrei Nesterenko urged Western nations not to encourage Georgia to
pursue military ventures by providing it with military aid.

Such military support leads Georgia to think it can solve its problems
militarily, not diplomatically, warned Nesterenko.

Georgia and Russia will both mark the one-year anniversary of the
war this weekend, in which the two fought over the status of two
breakaway Georgian republics, Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

In remarks carried by Interfax news agency from Ankara, visiting
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin stressed that Moscow had no
interest in use of arms in the Caucasus region.

Russia, said Putin, had no plans to attack Georgia-no matter what
the government in Tbilisi said-and he also urged an end to the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"Conflicts only disrupt the development of our relations with the
other side," Interfax quoted him as saying.

Thousands of Georgian students meanwhile arrived by bus on Thursday
in the city of Gori to protest the "Russian occupiers."

Russian soldiers had last year temporarily occupied the town, the
birthplace of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, after Georgia invaded
South Ossetia.

In the aftermath of the war, both breakaway regions claimed
independence and enjoy Russian recognition and support. However,
very few other nations recognize their statehood.

In the lead-up to the anniversary, the two countries have traded
accusations that the other is preparing for new military aggression.

The situation has alarmed international bodies. The European Union,
which maintains a force of over 200 monitors in Georgia, on Monday
warned both sides to refrain from stoking tensions.

The current chairwoman of the Organization for Security and Co-
operation in Europe, Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis, said
that all sides should refrain from actions and statements that could
destabilize the situation further.

"Wounds are still raw, and the region remains fragile and volatile,"
she said in a statement released by the Vienna-based body that includes
Russia and the United States among its members.

The head of human-rights body the Council of Europe, Terry Davis,
echoed that call, warning that both sides are acting irresponsibly
and stoking tensions in the Caucasus exactly as they did before they
went to war a year ago.

"They are marking the first anniversary of their conflict with
rhetoric and tension. This is how the shooting started a year ago,"
Davis said in a statement.

"While some Georgian and Russian politicians still shout at each other
and argue about who started it, the rest of us should remember both the
dead and the living … the thousands of people who were forced from
their homes and have still not been allowed to return," Davis said.

As Moscow blocked the extension of military observer missions by the
United Nations and the OSCE, both organizations had to withdraw from
Georgia in late June.

The EU’s mission remains in the country.

of Armenia have rejected their proposal to start discussions on the
Karabakh issue.

"We called on Armenian communists to resolve the current conflict in
a civilized way, but as before Armenia demonstrated unconstructive

Arman Babadzhanyan, editor-in-chief of the oppositional newspaper
"Zhamanak" (Time), sentenced to 3.5 years, whose health causes concern
in doctors, has declared his plan to go on hunger strike.

Armen Martirosyan, leader of the faction "Heritage" at the National
Assembly of Armenia, told journalists about poor health condition of
the convicted journalist. "Not for the first time I visited Arman,
but I’ve never left him with such a heavy feeling, because I didn’t
notice earlier such obvious health deterioration in any political
prisoner," the MP has declared.

He also said that he had sent a letter to President Serzh Sargsyan,
trying to draw his attention to the state of health of the young
journalist. Armen Martirosyan said that in the recent time the inmate
suffered from a rapid, about 40 percent, loss of vision; his right
hand is noticeably trembling. These are all the consequences of the
tumour sized 7.5 mm that was diagnosed in Babadzhanyan’s brain.

TURKMENISTAN: ASHGABAT TO COMPLETE PIPELINE TO IRAN IN 2009

A new gas pipeline connecting Turkmenistan and Iran will be finished
within the year, Turkmen officials are saying.

"To date, 6.5 kilometers of the Turkmen-Iranian gas pipeline,
which starts at the large Dovletabat gas deposit, has been built,
and another 18 kilometers of the pipeline has been prepared for
pipe-laying work. Considering the high pace of construction, the
project […] will be completed by November or December this year,"
the state-controlled TDH news agency quoted Deputy Prime Minister
Baymyrat Hojamuhammedov as saying on July 31.

Ashgabat and Tehran are currently in talks to increase gas exports
to up to 20 billion cubic meters per year.

"All of this takes place within the framework of orders from President
Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov to realize [the sale of] surplus gas
products created due to a lack of deliveries of Turkmen gas to Russia,"
the official Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported on August 1.

Arms Cargo For Hezbollah Were Planned To Be Delivered Via Yerevan

ARMS CARGO FOR HEZBOLLAH WERE PLANNED TO BE DELIVERED VIA YEREVAN

An explosion in luggage space of Tu-154 aircraft was the major reason
for crash near Tehran, Italian newspaper "Corriere della Sera"
reported quoting sources in the Middle East as saying. Arms cargo
intended for Hezbollah was on board of the aircraft.

On July 15, TU-154 plane owned by Caspian Airlines airline
were operating Tehran-Yerevan flight with 168 passengers on
board. 16 minutes after the takeoff, the crew reported unforeseen
problems. During the emergency landing the aircraft crashed to the
ground from a height of 8,000 meters. Iranian authorities have reported
that the cause of the crash was a fire in one of the engines.

The newspaper said Iranian authorities are trying to conceal true
cause of the crash. The newspaper argues that there was no simple
coincidence that just a few minutes later large security forces
arrived at the scene. The authorities were aware of the cargo on
board of the aircraft.

Witnesses who watched the collapse of the liner also confirmed an
explosion on the board. They say that they heard a strong explosion
before the plane crashed to the ground.

The Italian newspaper also said cargo of ammunition and detonators
intended for Hezbollah were on board of the plane. Sender of goods
was Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.

Newspaper’s sources argued that the ammunition was to be delivered
to southern Lebanon by land transport.

The load was accompanied by several members of the Revolution Corps
who died in a plane crash, the newspaper said.
