No separate agenda for Armenia and Diaspora – PM

2019-02-28 10:37:32

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan says there are no separate agendas for Armenia and the Diaspora. According to him, we have a national agenda aimed at achieving national goals.

"There may be discussions, debates, different approaches and views on issues related to the Diaspora in Armenia, but I want to set a task before us, first and foremost before me and our government: we must rule out any such action as may cast doubt on the unprecedented national unity that the Armenian people enjoy today in Armenia, in Iran and in the Diaspora. That unity is out of any political and party interests, our national unity is exalted above all, and we all serve that national unity," Pashinyan said at a meeting with Armenian community representatives in Tehran.

He hailed the "exceptional service" provided by the Iranian Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, the Armenian Catholic Church, and the Armenian Evangelical Church in the Iranian-Armenian community.

"The fact that all of us are here under the same roof, emphasizes that a truly new chapter has been opened in the history of our people, and each of us has a share to take by writing and creating that part of our history.
The greatest mission of our revolution and the government is that each of us, each one of you, as a whole, not only believes in the future of our homeland, our nation, but also is confident that we will be victorious in the 21st century. This is a new nationwide march with which we should open a new page in our nation’s history. We can record your loyalty to the values that led to the non-violent, velvet popular revolution," the Prime Minister stated.

"We no longer have separate agendas for Armenia and the Diaspora: we have a national agenda aimed at achieving national goals. I have repeatedly stated that while suffering, our people have always dreamed, we have dreamed of new victories, new happiness and new unity," he added

Nikol Pashinyan said time has come to materialize our long-cherished dreams, whether it be Armenia’s economic empowerment, the enforcement of Artsakh people’s legitimate demand, or the realization of our dreams.

"We must build our future with our own hands," he emphasized.

"Our destiny is no longer in the East, in the North and in the South, but in our hands, and as dignified citizens, we must grasp the fate of our destiny, and as a state, we must head for ever new victories. But I also want to emphasize that the realization of these dreams depends on each one, especially on me and my government," the Prime Minister continued.

Culture: Today marks prominent writer Hovhannes Tumanyan’s 150th birthday

Panorama, Armenia

19 February marks the 150th birthday anniversary of renowned Armenian writer Hovhannes Tumanyan. The great poet’s 150th birthday is included in the UNESCO Calendar of anniversaries of eminent personalities and important events of 2018-2019.

Jubilee events marking Tumanyan’s birthday will kick off today in Yerevan, Tbilisi and Dsegh, simultaneously.

Hovhannes Tumanyan was born in 1869 in the village of Dsegh, Tiflis Governorate, Russian Empire (now Lori Province, Armenia). His father, Aslan, was the village priest known by the name Ter-Tadevos. His mother, Sona, was an avid storyteller with a particular interest in fables. Young Tumanyan was the oldest of eight children.

From 1877 to 1879, Tumanyan attended the parochial school of Dsegh. From 1879–1883 he went to a school in Jalaloghly. Tumanyan moved to Tiflis in 1883, where he attended the Nersisyan School from 1883–1887. He wrote his first poem at the age of 12, while studying in Jalaloghly school. He lived at the teacher's house for a while and fell in love with the teacher's daughter Vergine. Since 1893, Tumanyan worked for Aghbyur, Murtch, Hasker and Horizon periodicals and also was engaged in public activism.

In 1899, Tumanyan came up with an idea of organizing meetings of Armenian intellectuals of the time at his house on 44 Bebutov Street in Tiflis (present-day Amaghleba 18, in Sololaki). Soon it became an influential literary group, which often gathered in the garret of Tumanyan's house. Vernatun means garret in Armenian, which was the name the group was referred to. Prominent members of the collective were Avetik Isahakyan, Derenik Demirchyan, Levon Shant, Ghazaros Aghayan, Perch Proshyan, Nikol Aghbalian, Alexander Shirvanzade, Nar-Dos, Vrtanes Papazyan, Vahan Terian, Leo, Stepan Lisitsyan, Mariam Tumanyan, Gevorg Bashinjagyan and many other significant Armenian figures of early 20th century. With some pauses, it existed until 1908.

In 1912 Tumanyan was elected the president of the Company of Caucasus Armenian Writers.

In the fall of 1921, Tumanyan went to Constantinople to find support of Armenian refugees. After months spent there, he returned ill. After surgery in 1922, he started to get better. But in September, Tumanyan's disease started to persist again. He was transferred to a hospital in Moscow, where he died on March 23, 1923.

Tumanyan is usually regarded in Armenian circles as "All-Armenian poet". He earned this title when the Catholicos of Armenia had ordered that Armenian refugees from the west not enter certain areas of his church and house, since he is considered to be "The Catholicos of all Armenians". Tumanyan in response decried that decision claiming that the refugees could seek relief in the Catholicos' quarters under order of "The Poet of all Armenians".

Tumanyan wrote poems, quatrains, ballads, novels, fables, critical and journalistic articles. His work is simple, natural and poetically inspired at the same time. It is not by mere chance that dozens of phrases and expressions from Tumanyan's works have become a natural part of people's everyday language, their sayings, adages, and maxims.

Many films and animated films have been adapted from Tumanyan's works. Two operas –  Anush (1912) by Armen Tigranian and Almast (1930) by Alexander Spendiaryan – were written based on his works.

Prosperous Armenia faction at parliament: Not numbers but people’s trust is important Prosperous Armenia faction at parliament: Not numbers but people’s trust is important

YEREVAN. – Not the numbers, but the people’s trust is important from the viewpoint of implementation of the government program for the next five years.

Arman Abovyan, a member of the Prosperous Armenia Party faction at the National Assembly, on Thursday said the aforementioned during the parliamentary debates on the proposed five-year program of the government.

In his view, the issue is much deeper.

“The level of the citizens’ trust in the National Assembly is very high,” Abovyan noted, “and we have no right not to justify it.”

The MP stated, however, that the proposed government program is not specific, and therefore people are asking how these fine objectives will come true.

“When we note the financial sources, timeframes, [and] mechanisms, we put but one objective: strengthening the people’s trust,” the lawmaker concluded.

Ruling authorities fail to defend vital state institutions: Bright Armenia PM

Aysor, Armenia
Feb 14 2019

Bright Armenia faction MP Arman Babajanyan claims that the past 10 months were enough for working out a program which could have become a guideline for not only 5 but 15 years.

“This document is de-strategic, de-conceptual document. The government’s program does not have any strategic basis,” he said at the parliament today.

Babajanyan stressed that according to the program Armenia will carry out self-isolating, single-vector policy with the new authorities not planning to undertake any steps to find strategic partners, establish allied relation and diversify country’s foreign policy.

“The foreign political relations described here raise concern that we will continue carrying out foreign policy based not on Armenia’s and national interests but stemming from unreplaceable principle of the third countries and commitments before them,” he said, adding that Russian Federation is a de facto impediment in our foreign relation while in reality the development of relations with Russia must be based on respect of Armenia’s dignity and sovereignty.

Referring to the speeches voiced by My Step lawmakers, the MP urged to defend vital institutions of the state not diverting from important issues.

“The police chief is being called improperly in the court and none of you defend him. Yesterday the defense minister is being reprimanded and none of you says anything,” Babajanyan said, stressing that the government fails to defend vital institutions.

Azeri president under fire over rare TV interview

By BBC Monitoring

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's rare interview to a local private TV has been widely discussed in the country.

Many local outlets widely reported on the president's 12 February interview, but it has been largely criticised by independent journalists, foreign-based dissidents and ordinary Azeris, who found fault with both the interviewer and the interviewee.

Aliyev praises achievements

At the very start of the hour-long interview, Aliyev defended his rare contact with local media, saying that he "regularly" reports the work he and his government have achieved in his widely covered cabinet speeches. He added that he keeps up with local media reporting on domestic issues. He also said that he has always been open to and supported the local media.

Aliyev underscored the importance of his interviews with foreign channels, saying that he uses them as a platform to tell the truth about Azerbaijan.

The president praised the country's achievements under his rule. He particularly mentioned the ongoing reforms, the stable economy and military might. He accused the country's short-lived government in 1992-93 for the loss of territories in the Karabakh conflict in the 1990s.

Critical voices

President Aliyev was interviewed by Mirsahin Agayev, a well-known commentator of Real TV, a privately-owned channel with a strong pro-government editorial line.

Many criticised the president for choosing Agayev as an interviewer. Once a well-known commentator on ANS TV, the country's first privately-owned independent channel, Agayev has become an ardent supporter of the president.

ANS TV was taken off the air in July 2016 over its coverage of US-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen following the failed coup in Turkey. Following ANS leadership's unsuccessful attempts to restore their broadcasting licence, Agayev came back on the air as the head of a new private broadcaster, Real TV, in 2018. He hosts a weekly programme in which he often attacks government critics, using swear words at times.

US-based Azeri journalist Sevinc Osmanqizi slammed the choice of Mirsahin Agayev as the interviewer. "Among so many journalists in Azerbaijan, is there not an honourable one [to do this interview]?" she said in a YouTube video. She said Agayev did not enjoy a good reputation and that he had used foul language. She also stressed that this was the first interview that Ilham Aliyev had given over the 16 years of his rule as president of Azerbaijan. In the video, Osmanqizi played voice messages she had received from Azeris via WhatsApp. One of the messages described things the president said in the interview as "lies from top to bottom".

Opposition activist Turqut Qambar said in a Facebook posting that Agayev was "a person who has lost his independence". His comment suggested that Mirsahin did not represent the Azerbaijani media. Qambar also said that there was nothing "new or hopeful" in the interview.

Opposition Azadliq daily commented that "Aliyev is not prepared to answer questions about our actual situation, while Mirsahin's right and courage to ask those kinds of questions were taken from him long ago".

The Meydan TV Facebook page published a video that showed Khadija Ismayil, a prominent investigative journalist, saying that she was unable to interview Aliyev despite yearly requests between 2008 and 2012. She said she had also sent Aliyev "specific thematic" questions to which she never received answers. "He does not seem to like my questions," she said.

A Facebook user made a sarcastic comment on a photo that showed Mirsahin interviewing Aliyev: "Which one is the journalist?"

Europe-based blogger Orduxan Teymurxan compared Aliyev to Hans Christian Andersen for "telling tales" in the interview.

"You [Aliyev] told tales under the name of an interview given to the most infamous journalist in the country… You are a taleteller like Andersen," foreign-based blogger Orduxan Teymurxan said on Facebook.

'Event of the day'

Meanwhile, pro-government media personalities praised the president's interview.

Rauf Arifoglu, the editor-in-chief of the privately-owned Yeni Musavat newspaper, said the interview was "a very positive event". He praised Aliyev's "good performance", adding that the president had a rich vocabulary.

Pro-government media expert Azar Hasrat called the interview the "event of the day" to be discussed for days to come.

He praised the interviewer's "professionalism" as a journalist and Aliyev for being "sincere and frank, as ever" and for giving "well-grounded and broad answers". He said it was a "very successful" and "necessary" interview. He dismissed the people who criticised the interview and the Mirsahin.

Satirical journalist Mirza Sakit commented on Hasrat's post, saying that "the day will come" when people would remind Hasrat about this post and the latter would try hard to persuade them that he never wrote it.

One user said that those who found faults with Mirsahin Agayev were jealous of his "successes". "Mirsahin is a personality who has his name engraved in Azerbaijani journalism with golden letters," the comment said.

In an editorial on pro-government news website Haqqin.az, Eynulla Fatullayev backed the president's opinion that he communicates with the media and the public via his speeches, in which he touches upon major issues of public concern. "What else can Azerbaijani journalists ask from the president?" Fatullayev said.

Fatullayev also praised the president for starting reforms and fighting corruption through the one-stop public service office, called ASAN Xidmat.

"For Azerbaijani society… the embodiment of the dream of a fair state is truly a top-down revolution. And the originator of this revolution is the president himself – the founder of the new e-management system," Fatullayev said.
