January 22, 2006 the Year of Armenia in Russia was officially launched.

"A number of diverse arrangements were held in Moscow, Saint Petersburg
and other regions of Russia, due to which our country managed to
appear before Russians in a new way," says Vigen Sargsyan, Assistant
to RA Presidnet, Coordinator of the Year of Armenia in Russia.

The official closing of the Year was held on the first days of
December.

What can we register, closing the Year? "It is very important that Year
of Armenia in Russia was not become simply a collection transitional
arrangements.

There were events that will remain in the history. First of all it
was the opening of Aram Khachatryan’s monument in Moscow, a number
of books were published," said Vigen Sargsyan.

What could have been organized better? Vigen Sargsyan would like the
Year of Armenia to find more coverage in Russian media. In case of
the year of Armenia in France this omission has already been taken
into consideration.

There have been a number of mutual political visits and economic
arrangements in the framework of the Year of Armenia in Russia. The
Assistant to RA President emphasized the conduct of the Days of
Armenia in regions of Russia as a great achievement, since it enabled
to establish direct link between Armenian and Russian businessmen.

Although the Year of Armenia in Russia has been officially closed,
the arrangements still continue.

Kerkorian, plus que jamais l’homme des jeux malgré son échec avec GM
(ENCADRE)

NEW YORK 1 déc 2006

L’an

Extra security precautions for Pope disrupt daily life in Istanbul

Istanbul’s Chief of Police, Celalettin Cerrah, commented yesterday on
the disruption to Istanbul residents’ daily life resulting from the
extraordinary security preacautions taken due to the papal visit this
week, noting "In every country in the world, there are precautions
taken when such visitors arrive. Istanbul’s residents are sensitive
to this fact."

Walking to work

Yesterday morning, due to the closures of the very central Istanbul
boulevards of Halaskargazi, Cumhuriyet and Tarlabasi in order to
allow the passage of the papal convoy, thousands of people reached
their homes and work places on foot.

Close control

Pope Benedict XVI arrived at the Vatican residence on Harbiye’s Olcek
Sokak only after close control and careful searches of homes and
businesses in the surrounding area.

Municipality street cleaners out in force

Street cleaners working for the Sisli Municipality swept through the
area around the Pope’s residence prior to his arrival, cleaning and
gathering all of the leaves which had fallen from the trees.

`Hayastan’ All-Armenian Fund Telethon: Unprecedented $13.7 Million
Pledged

Telethon 2006 Marks All Time High, Breaks Records

Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Yerevan – `Hayastan’ All-Armenian
Fund and its 20 international affiliates are pleased to announce that an
unprecedented $13.7 million was pledged internationally during various
fundraising events held across the world. `Hayastan’ All-Armenian
Fund’s ambitious drive to raise critical assistance and funds for
Nagorno Karabakh concluded with its 9th annual international telethon
which was held on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2006 in Los Angeles.
President of Nagorno Karabakh Arkady Ghoukassian and Primate of the
Artsakh Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church Archbishop Pargev
Martiorisyan were present at the studio, joining `Hayastan’
All-Armenian Fund donors in rallying support.

Broadcasting in more than 20 major U.S. cities as well internationally
via satellite through H1-Armenian Public Television in all continents
and streaming live on the internet for 12 hours, Telethon 2006 marked an
all time high amongst all telethons ever conducted by `Hayastan’
All-Armenian Fund. The total amount pledged – $13.65 million – almost
doubled last year’s telethon results of $7.77 million. Proceeds from
Telethon 2006 will benefit `Hayastan’ All-Armenian Fund’s Revival
of Artsakh program, as well as the critically important regional
development plan of the southernmost borderline region of Hadrut.

`The unprecedented success of this Telethon is a result of the
Diaspora’s unshakable belief in the mission of our unique organization
that unites all Armenians around the world under one mission –
building a stronger, viable Armenia. The consistent transparency of the
Fund through rigorous international audits, strict accounting practices,
and oversight mechanisms by the Diaspora have reinforced the public’s
resolve to help Armenia and Artsakh’, said Executive Director of
Hayastan All-Armenian Fund, Naira Melkoumian.

Prior to the Telethon, `Hayastan’ All-Armenian Fund’s European
affiliates, under the leadership of the French affiliate – Fonds
Armenien de France – organized a successful Pan-European Phone-a-Thon
campaign that raised more than $1.5 million (1.1=80 million) in pledges.
`During the years, the Phone-a-thon has become a pan-European movement
to assist Armenia and Karabakh’, stated Mr. Bedros Terzian, Chairman
of Fonds Armenien de France. The German affiliate of the Fund –
Armenien-Fonds e.V. – has pledged more than $60,000.

The unprecedented success has echoed in the international press as well.
An article entitled `Armenians together in spirit and electrons’
appeared on the front cover of Los Angeles Times California Section the
following morning. Other prominent media outlets such as the Associated
Press, Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, NBC, CBS and
others gave extensive coverage to the 12-hour live event that
highlighted the worldwide unity of Armenians. This year’s result for
the Fund’s U.S. Western Region affiliate – Armenia Fund, Inc. – is
the pinnacle of the development course that was adopted three years ago.
`This year, Armenia Fund U.S. Western Region was able to bring its
grand, mid level, and public grassroots donors together marking the
highest participation ever! This effort reflects an unparalleled $8.4
million in the U.S. Western Region only,’ stated Maria Mehranian,
Chairperson of Armenia Fund U.S. Western Region.

`Hayastan’ All-Armenian Fund’s 9th international telethon was also
widely broadcasted in all Eastern U.S. media markets, stretching from
the Floridian Panhandle to New England and the Great Lakes Region.
"Armenians all over the world voted with their wallets to support
Karabakh and `Hayastan’ All-Armenian Fund’, said Kevork Toroyan,
Chairman of Armenia Fund USA, the U.S. Eastern Region affiliate of the
Fund.

For the first time donations from Armenia and Artsakh surpassed $1.54
million dollars through an aggressive fundraising and public relations
campaign. Whether in Toronto or Buenos Aires, the Fund’s affiliates
stretching all over the globe, were truly instrumental in the success of
the worldwide fundraising effort. The Canadian Toronto affiliate has
already raised more than $300,000. The Argentinean affiliate, Fundo
Nacional Armenia, organized a benefit concert in Buenos Aires, as well
as a four day Phone-a-thon campaign. The Argentinean affiliate raised
more than $50,000. Armenians in the United Kingdom through the Fund’s
branch have collected more than $30,000.

The largest donors for Telethon 2006’s beneficiary project – Revival

constructions of schools in Karabakh; Project CURE (U.S. Western Region)

Turkey’s EU bid to improve ties with neighbors – Kocharian in Cyprus

TURKEY’S EU BID TO IMPROVE TIES WITH NEIGHBOURS, ARMENIAN LEADER SAYS
IN CYPRUS

[Presenter] Armenian President Robert Kocharyan, who is in Cyprus on
the first ever state visit, has met his Cypriot counterpart Tasos
Papadhopoulos. The Kocharyan – Papadhopoulos talks were followed by a
meeting of the delegations of the two countries in an expanded
format. President Kocharyan also spoke about the Turkish-Cypriot
problem and confirmed Armenia’s position once more. The Armenian
president also touched on the Armenian-Turkish issue.

[Correspondent, on the telephone from Nicosia] The Armenian
president’s state visit to Cyprus is the first high-level contact
between Armenia and Cyprus. Armenia and Cyprus do not only share
historical ties but also ways of integration into Europe. Cyprus has
passed this way successfully and can assist Armenia with its own
experience. Robert Kocharyan and Tasos Papadhopoulos today announced
that they were ready to boost the Armenian-Cypriot relations not only
in the issue of integration into Europe but also in bilateral
relations.

The Armenian-Cypriot talks started with the presidents’ one-to-one
talks. Then, they were joined by the two countries’ delegations. The
delegations included officials from the spheres of tourism and
banking. These are the main trends of prospects for the development
of the Armenian-Cypriot relations.

[Tasos Papadhopoulos, in Greek with Armenian voice-over] We have
discussed with the Armenian president the development of the
Armenian-Cypriot relations in all spheres, bilateral as well as
international issues. I hope that the working groups will submit
specific programmes of cooperation in education, tourism, banking and
cultural spheres and will discuss them in 2007.

[Correspondent] The Armenian president expressed hope that Cyprus
would share with Armenia its experience on the integration into
Europe, which will be useful for the reforms in our country. Cyprus
can also help Armenia within the framework of the EU’s Neighbourhood
Policy. The Armenian and Cypriot governments signed an agreement on
cooperation in the fight against organized and other crimes.

Robert Kocharyan answered journalists’ question about Armenia’s
position in the Turkish-Cypriot issue.

[Robert Kocharyan] We have always backed the Cypriot side in the UN
and generally in all discussions and we would like the Cypriot issue
to be solved as you wish.

[Correspondent] Robert Kocharyan has invited Tasos Papadhopoulos to
Armenia in 2007.

Turkey must reconsider the Cyprus issue till December, after which
the EU will announce its attitude to Turkey’s membership. Asked about
this issue, Robert Kocharyan noted that Turkey’s proposals for the
settlement of the relations with its neighbours will have an impact
on the Armenian-Turkish relations as well.

Robert Kocharyan also answered a question about Armenia’s position on
Turkey’s EU membership as Turkey did not recognize the Armenia
genocide.

[Robert Kocharyan] We hope that this membership process, thanks to
the reforms [presumably in Turkey], will create such a situation that
the discussions on the Armenian genocide in Turkey will be open and
give an opportunity to the Turkish public to voice its opinion on
this issue. We know that this will be a difficult path but we hope
that the Turkish people will get this path themselves. We hope that
by recognizing the Armenian genocide, the international community and
various countries will help the Turkish people overcome this
difficult path.

New Book on Armenian Genocide by Akcam Issued in Canada
23.11.2006 17:47 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The Zorian Institute of Armenian Research in Toronto
has published a book by Taner Akcam titled Flagrant Deed: Armenian
Genocide and Issue of Turkish Responsibility, reports Armenian Mirror
Spectator. The title chosen by the author represents words of founder
of current Turkish state Kemal Ataturk that he pronounced on April 24,
1920 at the Parliament open session. The international press has
already appreciated the book. The Economist noted in its October 21-27
issue, `The book highlights two facts. Firstly, many foreign witnesses
of deportations arrived at a conclusion that it was not deportation,
but slaughter. Secondly, why conditions are not formed in Turkey for
free discussion of the issue by now.’

The New York Times columnist Belinda Cooper wrote, `Akcam is a rare
scholar, who challenged native Turkey, which holds no organized
slaughter of Armenians took place. Akcam is the first Turkish
specialist to publicly use word genocide.’ In his turn Turkish writer
Orhan Pamuk underscored that Flagrant Deed is the final reports on the
organized extermination of Ottoman Armenians, written by the
courageous Turkish scholar.

Akcam devoted his book «to the memory of decorous Muslim Turk Haji
Halil, who saved and hid for over 6 months members of an Armenian
family threatening his own life.» Akcam noted he was shocked by «this
peculiar example of triumph of good and humanity over evil.»

The Zorian Institute helped to translate the book into English. The
book is expected to be issued in Hebrew, Armenian and other
languages. «The more books are published, the better Turks will know
and doubt the lie, presented by the state,» said Zorian Institute
Board of Directors Chair, professor Roger Smith, reports the Azg.

Regular Exhibition In National Assembly

REGULAR EXHIBITION IN NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

National Assembly of RA, Armenia
Nov 21 2006

On November 20 the NA Standing Committee on Science, Education,
Culture and Youth and Armenian International Women’s Association NGO
organized an exhibition of children’s works in the National Assembly,
which was dedicated to the 15th anniversary of Independence of Republic
of Armenia.

According to Mrs. Hranush Hakobyan, Chairwoman of the Committee, the
presented works of children of Gavar region Art Schools are singled
out not only by their genre diversity: paintings, sculpture, ceramic
pieces, needlework, but also by the originality of world perception:
directness, clearness, interesting color decisions, conceptions and
their free demonstration.

The MPs and employees of the National Assembly were present at the
exhibition, and they expressed words of admiration toward presented
works. They noted with enthusiasm that the cultural-educational
centres should be focused on; the talented and gifted children should
be discovered and supported, since the tomorrow of our country and
perspective of its development are conditioned by them.
