The Georgian authorities initiate new trials against Javakheti political
activists

The Georgian authorities have initiated new legal proceedings against
the Javakheti political activists Gurgen Shirinyan and Aram Batoyan.
Thus, in October 2009 the Akhalkalaki district court, carring out the
trial in absentia sentenced Gurgen Shirinyan to three years’
imprisonment on charges of hooliganism against the members of the
Georgian military police in March 2005. This new sentence was added to
an already existing sentence of 17 years’ imprisonment that was
adopted in respect of the Javakheti activist by Akhaltskha District
Court in December 2008 also in absentia.

Currently Akhalkalaki District Court holds proccedings in abcentia on
the case of the Javakheti political activist Aram Batoyan, manager of
Javakhk Sports and Culture Union’s Center (organization, led by
Vahagn Chakhalyan). He is charged by the Georgian authorities with
possession of weapons allegedly found during the search of the building
of the Center on July 21, 2008.

`Yerkir’ Union is strongly convinced that by these new
trials in absentia over the Javakheti political activists, the Georgian
authorities pursue the objective of strengthening the regime of state
terror in the region, and furthering the feelings of fear among the
Javakheti Armenians.

Given the above, `Yerkir’ Union demands from the
Georgian authorities:

1. To immediately conduct a new impartial investigation into the events
of July 17=80=9021, 2008 in Akhalkalaki;

2. To revise all the sentences in respect of the Javakheti political
activists and the members of their families;

3. To stop all the police repressions and political persecutions against
the Javakheti political activists.

`Yerkir’ Union calls on the international organizations
and accredited diplomatic missions in Georgia to draw close attention to
the situation in Javakheti, to step up pressure on the Georgian
authorities to put an end to the repression inflicted on the Armenians
in the region.

Fashion Diary: You Can’t Keep Up With (Or Keep Down) The Kardashians

FASHION DIARY: YOU CAN’T KEEP UP WITH (OR KEEP DOWN) THE KARDASHIANS

Los Angeles Times (blog)
January 29, 2010 | 9:29 am

Kardashian bebe Gossip, first impressions, trends in the making,
celebrities and style setters.

Last week, reality TV royal Khloe Kardashian shook hands with President
Obama at the White House.

The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star had been invited by her
husband, basketball player Lamar Odom, along with other team wives,
to the ceremony honoring the L.A. Lakers’ NBA championship. And though
the collision-of-cultures handshake wasn’t quite so jarring as when
President Nixon greeted Elvis Presley at the White House in 1970,
it was close.

The White House is just the latest corner of the world that the
ubiquitous Kardashians have conquered. And next month, they are
hoping to take over your closet when they debut a runway collection
for trendy clothing brand Bebe at New York Fashion Week.

The Bebe-Kardashians line, which was designed by the brand’s in-house
team with input from Kim, Khloe and Kourtney, will be in Bebe stores
shortly after the Feb. 16 runway show, bucking the traditional
six-month lag time from runway to rack. The runway show is expected
to be webcast live at Bebe.com and may be incorporated into the plot
of the Kardashians’ reality program.

The line, $59 to $129, is heavy on dresses, but also includes some
day wear, such as a leather pencil skirt and a pink silk romper. The
designing gig is for 12 months, with five deliveries expected
throughout the year.

Bebe was approached by the Kardashians’ agent about a clothing deal
last year because the sisters were fans of the brand, according to
Sophie Rietdyk, vice president of global licensing for Brisbane,
Calif.-based Bebe.

"They are just the girls next door," says Rietdyk, who put together
the deal.

The Kardashians are part of a new wave of celebrities signing on to
advise or design for established brands. Lindsay Lohan is the artistic
advisor for Emanuel Ungaro, and Sarah Jessica Parker is president and
chief creative officer for Halston Heritage. British TV personality
Alexa Chung is designing a collection for Madewell, and Kate Moss a
line of handbags for French accessories brand Longchamp. And Steve
Madden is partnering with Diana Ross on some footwear.

"Even though I don’t have a lot of faith in the integrity of
celebrities as designers or artistic advisors, in this economy, when
everyone is playing it safe in terms of what they have the nerve to
buy and what they have the nerve to produce, retailers are looking
for any way to differentiate," says David Wolfe, creative director
of the New York trend forecasting firm Doneger Group.

Although Bebe has done one-off collections with the Pussycat Dolls,
Nicole Richie and Heidi Klum, this is the first time the brand
has partnered with a celebrity for an extended length of time. The
Kardashian runway debut promises to be a media maelstrom. But the
girls will be making plenty of headlines before then, which is what
Bebe is counting on.

Kim Kardashian, girlfriend of New Orleans Saints running back Reggie
Bush, will hit the Super Bowl in Miami next week. During the big game,
she is likely to be seen on screen in her latest Carl’s Jr.

commercial, in which she performs the near-impossible feat of sexing
up a cranberry apple walnut salad by noshing on one in a bubble bath.

She’s also uncapping a fragrance bearing her name at Sephora stores,
with personal appearances planned around the country. That’s between
shilling for products on the red carpet (Couture Lollipops being the
latest), working as a contributing beauty editor for OK Magazine,
and helping her sisters mind their clothing boutique Dash in Calabasas.

Kourtney, who just had a baby named Mason, is accusing OK Magazine of
digitally slimming her body for the Feb. 1 cover to make it look like
she already lost the baby weight, while at the same time promoting
something called a Belly Bandit.

And Khloe is partying at Sundance, dropping hints that she would like
to be a mommy and fending off rumors that her TV wedding to Odom was
a publicity stunt.

It’s a wonder the Kardashian sisters have time to eat, but they do
(QuickTrim diet supplements, mainly). Oh yeah, they are also rolling
out a line of candles with the Salt Lake City-based firm For Every
Body. The scents are inspired by baked goods. And they have an
Armenian-inspired jewelry line in the works with Virgins, Saints
and Angels.

With their enormous popularity (their E! network show reached a network
record 4.2 million viewers in December), it’s no surprise that they
are getting involved in fashion design. But what style exactly are
the Kardashians selling?

"They project sex and Bebe’s image is a sexy come-on kind of fashion,"
says Wolfe, the trend analyst. "They are not anorexic by a long shot."

Fashion designer Stacey Bendet, who counts the Kardashians as friends
and fans of the clingy mini-dresses and tops in her Alice & Olivia
clothing line, puts it a different way: "Whenever I see them together,
it’s like watching my sister and me when we were growing up."

"They are flirty and fun and sexy, and they dress in a way that
flatters their bodies," Bendet adds. "They are real women with curves.

. . . When you see something on a 100-pound, 5’10" model, it doesn’t
translate."

Except that the Kardashians have the model thing covered too. Kendall
Jenner, their 14-year-old half-sister, a regular on the family reality
show, recently signed with an agency and stars in the new Forever 21
ad campaign.

Keeping up with Kendall sounds like the perfect spinoff.

RA President Serzh Sargsyan’s congatulatory address on the occasion
of Armenian Army Day.

"Dear fellow Armenians, Generals, officials and soldiers, I warmly
congratulate you on the occasion of Armenian Army Day.

The creation and development of the Armenian Army was a historical
victory that became a reality right in front of the eyes of our
generation. We have paid a high price for the loss of statehood and
thus, the lack of an army since the Middle Age until 1915, Sumgait,
Kirovabad and Baku. The Armenian army is the dignity of the Armenian
nation.

It was that dignity that lifted Armenians from all walks of life and
particularly, the volunteers who had to become the foundation and
anchor for the future army. Many of the young soldiers put their
lives on the line for liberty and the Homeland. We glorify them,
bow our heads in front of them and respect their memory.

The Armenian Army was established through the fires, bloodshed and
tears of war and continues to develop and get stronger. Today, the
Armenian Army is the iron guarantee that secures our existence and
is a cold shower over the hot-tempered adventurists.

There cannot be any balance, peace and stability in the region
without a combative army. The role of our army is not only limited
to defending our country’s borders. The deepening international
integration presupposes new issues with different directions and
successful solutions.

Dear soldiers and officials, Besides being a state, pan-national
holiday, this day is also the day of your profession that could
truly be considered as a mission and a call to continue the march of
historical victories of the Armenian army with dignity.

Your main issue of concern is to protect the security of the Armenian
nation. With your high qualifications, perfect skills of handling
technical equipment, patriotism, courage and morality, you stand
reliably against any assault. Any provoker must wait to see serious
counter-attacks and huge surprises from the Armenian Army and to not
realize this is at least naïve.

Prevention of war is the greatest victory for any normal country that
respects the rights of people, nations and countries. You fulfill
this completely, in an honorable manner and enjoy the love, respect
and trust of the Armenian nation.

Once again, I congratulate you on the occasion of this glorious day and
wish peace in our country and region and that our people continue to
create and work peacefully for the strengthening and rise of Armenia.

Glory to the Armenian Army,

Long live the Republic of Armenia.

Cavusoglu Would Like To Meet Armenian PACE Delegation And Visit Arme

CAVUSOGLU WOULD LIKE TO MEET ARMENIAN PACE DELEGATION AND VISIT ARMENIA

Tert.am
27.01.10

The newly elected president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the
Council of Europe, Mevlut Cavusoglu, in an exclusive APA news agency
interview, said that he would like not only to meet with Armenian and
Azerbaijani representatives to PACE, but also to visit both countries.

"As we are choosing the dialogue, we think the restoration of
constructive dialogue between the two countries is necessary,"
said the PACE president. "We will further continue working in this
direction. Since I will have a tough week, full of different meetings
concerning the session, I cannot exactly tell you whether I’ll have
a chance to meet them," he continued.

Cavusoglu affirmed the press, however, that he would very much like to
meet with both delegations. "If I will fail to meet head of delegation
of the two countries this week, then I will meet them in the next.

It’s worth noting that we saw such meetings in the past too… we
will have joint, as well as separate, meetings in the future."

Asked when will he visit Azerbaijan, Cavusoglu said that’s dependent
on when he receives an invitation from Azerbaijan. He expressed
his readiness to visit the country, saying "I would like to visit
Azerbaijan as a President of PACE."

Nikolay Hovhannesyan: This Book Is A Strong Message To Turkey

NIKOLAY HOVHANNESYAN: THIS BOOK IS A STRONG MESSAGE TO TURKEY

PanARMENIAN.Net

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Tekeyan Cultural Center in Yerevan hosted the
presentation of "Armenian Genocide" book today, January 27. The book
was published in 10 languages, including Turkish.

"My first book, dedicated to the Armenian Genocide, was published
in March 1965. For the past year, I worked at a number of problems
related to Middle East, Arabian world, Artsakh, yet I always touched
upon the issue of Genocide in some way or another," the author of
the book, RA National Academy member Nikolay Hovhannesyan said.

According to him, "Armenian Genocide" book differs from other
monographs on the subject. While working at the book, I was guided
by a principle "no whining". I attempted to narrate the most tragic
pages of our history and do it in a dignified manner. I believe I
managed to avoid the most common shortcoming of our historiography,"
he emphasized.

"My friend characterized this book as a strong message to Turkey,"
the author noted.

The Armenian Genocide (1915-23) was the deliberate and systematic
destruction of the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire during
and just after World War I. It was characterized by massacres, and
deportations involving forced marches under conditions designed to
lead to the death of the deportees, with the total number of deaths
reaching 1.5 million.

The date of the onset of the genocide is conventionally held to be
April 24, 1915, the day that Ottoman authorities arrested some 250
Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople.

Thereafter, the Ottoman military uprooted Armenians from their homes
and forced them to march for hundreds of miles, depriving them of
food and water, to the desert of what is now Syria. Massacres were
indiscriminate of age or gender, with rape and other sexual abuse.

To date, twenty countries and 44 U.S. states have officially recognized
the events of the period as genocide, and most genocide scholars
and historians accept this view. The Armenian Genocide has been also
recognized by influential media including The New York Times, BBC,
The Washington Post and The Associated Press.

The majority of Armenian Diaspora communities were formed by the
Genocide survivors.

Chopin: Cello Sonata; Piano Trio; Grand Duo, Review

CHOPIN: CELLO SONATA; PIANO TRIO; GRAND DUO, REVIEW
By Geoffrey Norris

Daily Telegraph

Young talent: violinist Vilde Frang EMI 6 87742 2, £13.99

The CDs likely to be released in this, Chopin’s bicentenary year
can hardly fail to be weighted in favour of his solo piano music,
since that is the area to which he devoted the bulk of his creative
attention. That fact alone makes this programme of three ensemble
pieces all the more welcome, but, even if there were suddenly to be an
avalanche of discs of the Cello Sonata, the Piano Trio and the Grand
Duo on themes from Meyerbeer’s opera Robert le diable, it would not
diminish the dynamic impact of this one. The young Danish cellist
Andreas Brantelid, currently a member of the BBC’s New Generation
Artists scheme, is joined by the ideally matched Armenian-born pianist
Marianna Shirinyan and, in the Trio, by the Norwegian violinist Vilde
Frang for performances of remarkable flair and exceptional poise.

Why do people find Faure difficult? The Trio, albeit that Chopin
scarcely holds back with the demands of his piano writing, comes
across with discerningly imagined proportion and balance, its melodies
beautifully floated, its instrumental colours subtly blended. The
dance rhythms of the finale leap from the page in playing that has
sinew and delicacy.

Brantelid comes more to the fore in the Sonata and in the Grand
Duo, and, in harmony with Shirinyan, does so with terrific panache
and innate sensibility and with a tone that is both burnished and
malleable. The fact that you can also sometimes hear Brantelid’s
deep intakes of breath somehow strengthens the passion of his
interpretations, which reveal a stylistic insight, elegance and
emotional power to match his striking technical aplomb. This is an
imaginative and fruitful combination of young talents on a disc that
will be relished long after the bicentenary year is over.

Today, Serge Sargsyan met with the members of the Supervisory Chamber.
He expressed his satisfaction with the activities of the chamber in
2009. He said that it is not a secret that our country has a series of
problems and only those naïve may think that all the problems can be
solved immediately. According to him, we have to be ready for a
lasting fight and we need to be able to differentiate main problems
from the secondary ones and to make steps to solve them.

Serge Sargsyan attached importance to the problems of effective
management of public measures in the work of the Supervisory Chamber
he also called on the staff of the chamber to work more actively this
year. He said that within the public there are always questions like
how it happens that the Supervisory Chamber reveals cases of wasting
of public means, etc, but no high-ranking official is ever persecuted.
And as he said the task of the Supervisory Chamber in 2010 have to be
this one.

According to Serge Sargsyan, the Supervisory Chamber has to correct
its mistakes up to the end and does not have to give way to
repressions, requests in this work. An infringement on public means
is a crime in every country. In our country it is a double crime
because we have unsolved problems and we need to spend our measures
more effectively. Any infringement on these measures is a crime
towards our future generations.
