Only small traders are inspired by the opening of the Armenian-Turkish
border today, member of the ARF Bureau, head of the Dashnaktsutyun
faction of the National Assembly Vahan Hovhannisyan told a press
conference today.

According to him, real businessmen and producers are worried. The
Armenian Revolutionary Federation is also anxious.

The qualifier between the national football teams of Armenia and
Turkey is scheduled for October 14, exactly a month from today.

Exactly 14 days have passed after the Armenian-Turkish protocols were
publicized. However, unlike Turkey, Armenia holds neither political
consultations, nor serious discussions on the issue.

To destroy this wall of indifference, to launch internal political
consultations and inform the public about the possible dangers the
protocols contain, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation is starting
a hunger strike tomorrow, Vahan Hovhannisyan said.

According to some information, President Serzh Sargsyan is going
to discuss the Armenian-Turkish protocols with political forces on
September 17. Vahan Hovhannisyan said he backs such meetings, but
they are not enough.

"The protocols include preconditions, Let’s seriously discuss and
explain our concerns," heads of the ARF faction said.

TBILISI: Armenia Weighs Positives And Negatives Of Opening The Armen

ARMENIA WEIGHS POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES OF OPENING THE ARMENIA-TURKISH BORDER

Armenian Minister of Economy Nerses Eritsian suggests that the opening
of the Turkish-Armenian border will have some negative consequences as
well as significant positive ones. In 2007 the Armenian International
Policy Research Group (AIPRG) held a conference at which it assessed
the pluses and minuses of opening the border. The main threat this
move presents is that Turkish products will flood the Armenian market,
although conversely Armenian products will have the possibility of
entering other countries.

Eritsian thinks that Armenia’s future depends much on encouraging
the development of the country’s export potential and opening the
border will accelerate this process to the extent that exports will
counter the threat of imported Turkish products conquering the Armenian
market. He has also stressed that in Armenia there is an increasing
demand for high quality products, so Turkish goods will have to
compete with high quality European, North American or Asian ones.

Eritsian says that opening the border will bring mostly positive
results. Good cooperation can be established between Armenian and
Turkish industrialists, and through Turkey Armenia could reach EU
markets by achieving a free trade agreement with the EU, Turkey being
a member of the EU customs union.

All Projects Will Be Implemented On Time, Minister Of Transport Prom

ALL PROJECTS WILL BE IMPLEMENTED ON TIME, MINISTER OF TRANSPORT PROMISES

Every Friday the Government calls a press conference to present the
works done and to be done under the anti-crisis program.

Before the global financial-economic crisis the Ministry of Transport
and Communication of Armenia had undertaken a number of projects:
construction of the North-South highway and the Iran-Armenia railway,
as well as reconstruction of rural roads.

All the programs will be launched and completed in time, Minister of
Transport and Communication Gurgen Sargsyan told a press conference
today.

The Minister noted that the reconstruction of about 186 km roads
will be covered by the state budget. The rest of the programs will be
implemented with the assistance of the Asian Development Bank and the
World Bank. If everything goes right, the first stage of construction
of the North-South corridor will start in April-May, 2010.

Is it logical to construct the Iran-Armenia railway in case
the Armenian-Turkish border opens, at last? "It will become more
interesting from the economic point of view. It will make Armenia a
transit route for transportation of goods from India, China, and the
Persian Gulf to Europe," the Minister said.

The Minister informed that negotiations are underway with the
Development Bank of Japan. They expect to sign an agreement by yearend,
under which the Bank will provide $70-100 million credit for rural
roads reconstruction program.

The passions have been on top before the usual meeting of the football
championship 2010. The loss of our team in the game with the Bosnia
and Herzegovina football team was the last straw. The football
players were excited too as there were doubts that they will have
psychological problems in the game with the Belgian team and will not
be able to lead a normal game. The time however proved the contrary,
the displeasure of the fans made a positive influence. The Armenian
team had a thing to prove, they devoted themselves to the game and
celebrated their first victory with 2:1 points.

This victory is of a great importance for us. Our team at last got a
victory before the principal meeting with Spain and Turkey and will
play with more confidence in the future. The victory they got over
Belgium will have its impact over the resumption of the psychology
of the team.

Mika Aiming For First Armenian No1

MIKA AIMING FOR FIRST ARMENIAN NO1

UEFA.com
Sept 8 2009

MIKA (in red) and Pyunik (in white) are the prime contenders for
the Armenian title (©90rope) FC Mika are six points off the top of
the Armenian table, but as they meet FC Pyunik for the first of two
summit battles before the end of the season, the cup specialists are
dreaming of a first title.

Title monopoly The race for the championship has frequently been
close in recent years, but the outcome has always been the same, with
Pyunik successful in each of the past eight campaigns. The capital
club made major changes from the side which triumphed last season,
bringing a new generation of players into the first team, and their
position at the top of the table is not yet secure.

‘Not over’ The champions’ coach Vardan Minasyan told uefa.com that
things may not be so simple, explaining: "Pyunik are always fighting
for first place regardless of the age of the squad. The race for the
gold medals is not over and anything can happen. The fight will be
tough." Exactly how tough may become clear as Pyunik visit Mika on
Saturday for the first of two potential title deciders.

Cup specialists With eight rounds to go, Mika are in an almost
unprecedented position. Having earned their reputation as
Armenian Cup specialists, winning the competition five times, the
once-Ashtarak-based club peaked in league terms with runners-up
finishes in 2003 and 2004. And while they lost their most recent
match 3-2 at FC Kilikia, coach Samvel Darbinyan is not abandoning
hope of claiming a maiden title.

Tough schedule "Nobody can play well in every match," Darbinyan
said. "We have had our ups and downs, but I hope that the worst is
over. We have two important matches against Pyunik and have to win if
we want to get the title." They may be assisted in that aim by the
champions’ fixture schedule, with the likes of FC Ulis Yerevan, FC
Banants and FC Gandzasar Kapan all capable of giving them tough games.

New force Ulis could indeed be the biggest surprise package of
all. Founded in 2006, the signings of international players Karen
Aleksanyan, Armen Tigranyan, David Grigoryan and Grayr Mkoyan have
raised the club’s ambitions, and a late assault on the summit is not
entirely beyond them. "We want to play attractive football; that is
the most important thing," coach Sevada Arzumanyan said. "We’re in
a good shape. Third place would be a success to us but we want more."
