Sassoun, and even Ara the Fair.

The lecture will address centuries old historical relations between
peoples and civilizations of the region, thus presenting the history
of the Armenian people in schematic, tabular and cartographic format.
Also presented will be the paramount role of the Armenian people in
the creation and development of the ancient civilization in
Mesopotamia. The lecture will entail the time span from the early
periods of the Mesopotamian civilization to the Bagradit Kingdom.

Egoyan’s Chloe will continue to shoot around Neeson’s schedule

Denis Seguin in Toronto
19 Mar 2009 22:08

Production on Atom Egoyan’s Chloe will continue in the wake of the
death of actress Natasha Richardson, the wife of the film’s star, Liam
Neeson.

Richardson died Wednesday in New York following a ski accident in the
Quebec resort of Mt. Tremblant. The New York City medical examiner’s
office said the actress died from a blunt impact to the head.

In a series of statements, the film’s production office said the
shooting schedule will focus on scenes featuring other cast members,
including Julianne Moore and Amanda Seyfried.

The statement read: `There are some scenes with Liam Neeson which have
not been completed, however, we do not feel this is the time to
address that matter. Our concern is for Liam and his family at this
difficult time,` adding that the entire cast and crew are `bereft.’

Egoyan added a personal note: `I had the opportunity to meet Natasha
at the opening of the play I did with Liam in New York last year. Her
intense pride and affection for her husband was so clear, as was his
passion and love for her. I’m so devastated for Liam’s loss.’

FORMER MAYOR OF YEREVAN FORECASTS PRESIDENT AND PARLIAMENT RESIGNATION TILL 2010

PanARMENIAN.Net
19.03.2009 14:49 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Former Mayor of Yerevan, member of the Armenian
National Congress Vahagn Khachatryan forecasts early presidential
and presidential election.

"Given the current critical economic situation, the authorities will
resign either in late 2009 or early 2010," Khachatryan said.

Victory of opposition in the Mayor election is guaranteed, according
to him.

"During the February 2008 presidential election, 160 000 out of
400 000 voters supported Levon Ter-Petrosyan. This means that the
authorities stand no chance to win the election of Mayor of Yerevan,
even if they resort to falsifications," Khachatryan said.

"First President Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s leading the proportional
list of the Armenian National Congress was an inspiration for the
Congress and a trouble for the authorities," ex-Mayor of Yerevan
Vahagn Khachatryan told a press conference today.

It has not been decided yet who is going to be the second on the list.

Negotiations are underway with the "Heritage" Party, he said.

"I don’t think that the list proposed by the "Heritage" was
competitive. We have no problem with cooperation, we simply have
different approaches. We arrived at the conclusion as a result of
long discussions," Vahagn Khachatryan said.

Azerbaijan Opening Supply Route To Afghanistan

As the United States prepares to increase its military deployment in
Afghanistan, attention is being devoted to the question of supply
routes for these and other coalition forces. The U.S. European
Command (EUCOM) held a conference in Baku on March 9 and 10 aimed
at exploring ways to diversify the supply routes to include the
South Caucasus. Government officials from Azerbaijan, Georgia, and
Turkey attended, along with U.S military representatives from the
Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, Transportation Command,
Defense Logistics Agency, Department of Defense (DoD), and EUCOM,
as well as private transport companies. With Taliban pressure on the
supply route though Pakistan coupled with the Kyrgyz decision to close
the U.S. airbase at Manas, EUCOM has tried to find solutions to the
problem by involving private local companies in the South Caucasus
and Turkey to assist in the transit of non-lethal cargo to Afghanistan.

According to the Caspian navigation bureau, the new route through
the South Caucasus has already been successfully tested, with some
containers going though Azerbaijan and shipped to Afghanistan. Should
the route prove successful, it is planned to ship upward of 30,000
containers each month. More than 90 containers have already passed
through the port of Aktau, Kazakhstan, en route to Afghanistan. Ilham
Mammadov, the head of the foreign economic relations department of
the Caspian navigation bureau, explained how this solution would
make the use of military personnel in the transit of such goods
unnecessary: "This is related to delivering food to troops serving
in Afghanistan. The foodstuffs will be brought to Azerbaijan in
containers and will then be shipped either to Kazakhstan’s port of
Aktau or to Turkmenistan’s Turkmenbashy and will then be delivered
to the U.S. military in Afghanistan" (ANS TV, March 10).

U.S. ambassador to Azerbaijan Anne Derse emphasized that
Washington considered Azerbaijan a key security partner and that
the transportation conference was another example of growing
practical bilateral security cooperation. Baku has been keen to
explore additional ways of participating in the war on terror since
withdrawing its peacekeeping troops from Iraq in late 2008. Derse
commented, "Cooperating with our partners, we see opportunities for
investigating the potential to purchase commercial goods produced in
those countries and keep cargoes in storage. Thus, both directions
will benefit the local economy and will support Azerbaijan’s efforts
to develop as a regional transport center" (APA News Agency, March 10).

Terry Davidson, head of the public relations department of the
U.S. embassy in Baku, pointed to the emerging role of Azerbaijan in
Washington’s search for alternatives to Manas and for diversifying
supply routes for the coalition forces in Afghanistan:

We are searching for convenient ways. As a result, some agreements are
already in place on purchasing and delivering some goods. Non-military
issues–foodstuffs and everyday goods–were discussed in Baku. It
is not just about turning Azerbaijan into a depot but also about
the transport and storage of goods from all countries in the supply
chain. This is cooperation. On the other hand, the U.S. military will
be receiving services from various organizations and private companies
(ANS TV, March 10).

Some Azeri analysts argue that such transit agreements could also
pave the way for U.S. military basing within the country, should this
become necessary, making use of the warehouses for humanitarian aid as
arms depots. While such options remain plausible, it seems unlikely
that Washington will press the military dimension too far within the
South Caucasus, concentrating instead on using commercial companies
to resolve the logistical needs of the coalition forces in Afghanistan
(Azadliq, March 10).

On March 5 Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan reportedly told
Zalmay Aziz, Afghanistan’s ambassador in Yerevan, that Armenia was
ready to assist coalition forces in Afghanistan by opening its airspace
for the transport of personnel. "Since the coalition forces launched an
operation in Afghanistan, Armenia has been expressing its readiness to
assist in transiting military cargo and to make its air space available
for transporting personnel," Ohanyan said (Interfax, March 6).

Georgia has also confirmed its readiness to facilitate the formation
of a new transit route. Moreover, it does not rule out hosting a
U.S. airbase, should Washington pursue this possibility. "If the
United States thinks it wants to establish a base, we would seriously
consider it," Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze told Japan’s
Nikkei newspaper on March 12 (AFP, March 12). Such military basing
plans would undoubtedly prove highly controversial, given the tense
relationship that persists between Moscow and Tbilisi following the
war last August. The more urgent priority for U.S. and NATO military
planners is to diversify the existing supply lines for the mission
in Afghanistan

Through EUCOM’s close cooperation with the U.S. Central Command,
a new supply route is likely to emerge with the South Caucasus
connecting to the overland route passing though Central Asia. Air
transportation routes transiting the South Caucasus could either go
from Turkey through Armenia or Georgia, Azerbaijan across the Caspian,
and use Kazakh and Uzbek airspace; or a more direct route could go
through Turkmen airspace. The South Caucasus overland supply routes
could begin in Turkey or alternatively could use local purchases
of goods in Azerbaijan before being shipped across the Caspian to
Kazakhstan or Turkmenistan. A cheaper option would be to fly goods
from Azerbaijan though Turkmen airspace into Afghanistan. Azerbaijan
looks set to benefit from the closure of Manas, while Western planners
refocus on expanding supply routes in a way that does not involve a
scramble for alternative bases.

Icon Launches WiMAX In Armenia

ICON LAUNCHES WIMAX IN ARMENIA
by Michael Lacquiere

March 17, 2009

iCON Communications has launched its WiMAX service in Armenia. The
operator now offers wireless broadband services to residential,
corporate and government customers, and has indicated that it plans
to launch VoIP services imminently, having been one of eight telcos
to have been granted number codes and capacity for voice telephony
provision last month (seeArmenia: 26 February 2009:).

Significance:iCON has stuck to its pledge to launch commercial WiMAX
services by mid-March 2009 and will now look to make good on another
target of achieving a subscriber base of 10,000 within its first 12
months of operation (seeArmenia: 4 December 2008:). iCON also plans to
have nationwide coverage by the end of 2010 at an investment cost of
around $10US million. The provision of wireless broadband is becoming
increasingly popular in Armenia, given that it sidesteps the trouble
and costs of physical infrastructure deployment. Further roll-outs
can be expected from Comstar and Clearstream, each of which has also
obtained WiMAX licences.

Obama visit to Turkey unique occasion to raise Genocide issue

Assembly: Obama’s visit to Turkey unique occasion to raise Genocide issue
12.03.2009 19:40 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The U.S. president, Barack Obama’s upcoming visit to
Turkey is a unique occasion to raise the issue of the Armenian
Genocide in the Ottoman Empire and its denial by Turkey, said Brian
Ardouny, Executive Director of the Armenian Assembly of Armenia. As
PanARMENIAN.Net was reported at AAA, the Assembley welcomes the
Congressmen’s initiative, of Adam Schiff, Frank Pallone, George
Rodanovich, and Mark Kirk who reminded Barack Obama again about his
pre-election promise to recognize the Armenian Genocide.

Washington, DC – On March 10, Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA), joined
by Representative George Radanovich (R-CA) and the Co-Chairs of the
Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, Representatives Frank
Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Mark Kirk (R-IL), sent a letter to President
Barack Obama thanking him for his strong record in support of Genocide
affirmation and urging him to remain steadfast in his commitment. The
letter comes after a recent announcement that President Obama plans to
visit Turkey next month, reported the Armenian Assembly of America.

"During your upcoming trip to Turkey," the letter reads, "and in
discussions with your advisors over how to commemorate the events of
1915-1923, you will doubtless be counseled by some to continue the
practice of avoiding the truth in favor of short-term political
expediency. We do not minimize Ankara’s threats of adverse action when
you recognize the genocide, or when Congress takes action to formally
recognize the genocide, but we believe that our alliance is strong
enough to withstand the truth."

The letter also recalls President Obama’s record on the issue and how
he has "demonstrated time and again [his] understanding of the
importance to Armenian-Americans of formal American recognition of the
crime that was committed against their parents, grandparents and
great-grandparents." Adding that "their pain is not unlike that of
American Jews, who live each day with the memory of the
Holocaust… Whether it is today’s Sudanese government or yesterday’s
Ottoman Empire, the perpetrators of genocide, as well as the victims,
must know that the United States will not shrink from confronting the
truth."

"President Obama’s upcoming trip to Turkey presents a unique
opportunity to address the consequences of genocide and its
denial. We, therefore, applaud the initiative of Representatives
Schiff, Radanovich, Pallone and Kirk," stated Assembly Executive
Director Bryan Ardouny.

Established in 1972, the Armenian Assembly of America is the largest
Washington-based nationwide organization promoting public
understanding and awareness of Armenian issues. The Assembly is a
501(c)(3) tax-exempt membership organization.

Alexander Lukashenko’s working visit to Armenia covered with a veil of secrecy
13.03.2009 19:41 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The Belarus president, Alexander Lukashenko arrived
in Armenia, March 11. Alexander Lukashenko was received at Yerevan
`Zvartnots’ airport by the President of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan
personally. The Belarus president who left the board of the plane with
his youngest son, Nikolai, was met with the traditional bread and
salt. At the airport Lukashenko and Sargsyan also had a short talk
which had become the only `working visit’ talk ever since his visit in
Armenia.

As `Belarusskie Novosti’ reports, Lukashenko made his way from Yerevan
directly to Tsaghkadzor located 55 km. away from the capital of
Armenia. There he stayed at an ultra modern five-star hotel complex,
Multi Rest House. He plans to stay there until Sunday. At least, the
hotel rooms occupied by the guests from Belarus were reserved until
March 15.

What is more, the press service of the President of Armenia does not
spread any information on whether Sargsyan `Lukashenko meeting will
take place again. As the head of Belarus president press service,
Pavel Legki reports, Lukashenko will be back to Minsk `no earlier than
tomorrow.’ `There will still be meetings to be held in Armenia,’ noted
P. Legki.

â??Charentsâ?? genius will remain actual at all

like Charents,â?? the writers grandson Armen Charents stated.

Yeghishe Charents (March 13, 1897 â?? November 29, 1937) was
an Armenian poet and public activist. Charents was one of the most
