ANKARA: Turkish-Armenian Writer: Cage Plan Similar To Earlier Plots

TURKISH-ARMENIAN WRITER: CAGE PLAN SIMILAR TO EARLIER PLOTS

Today’s Zaman

The tactics outlined in the Cage Operation Action Plan, an alleged coup
plot aimed at undermining the government by assassinating non-Muslims
in Turkey, do not sound farfetched and are actually reminiscent
of earlier incidents, Turkish-Armenian writer Mıgırdic Margosyan
has said.

In an interview with the Zaman daily published on Sunday, Margosyan
discussed the significance of the plot, for which 33 suspects including
serving generals have been implicated on charges of membership in
Ergenekon, an alleged armed terrorist organization. He said the tactics
outlined in the plan were similar to the incidents that took place
on Sept. 6-7, 1955, when almost 5,000 stores belonging to non-Muslims
were burned down by provoked mobs in Ä°stanbul.

"They are trying to do what they did 55 years ago. They failed [this
time]. If they had been capable, they would have done so again. It
makes me worry that there are still people with such a mentality
within the state," he said.

He further argued that those alienated by these persistent circles
nested deep within the state are not only the Armenians and other
minorities but also the majority of Turks themselves.

"What is their problem? A lack of democracy. We will continue to
have problems as long as we keep saying that we are a democracy but
not meeting the minimum requirements of one," he noted, adding that
he will vote in favor of the government-proposed constitutional
amendments if they are presented for public approval in a referendum.

The proposed changes include extensive reforms, particularly to the
judiciary, mainly aimed at expanding democratic representation and
bringing it closer to the standards of the European Union, which
Turkey aspires to join.

Margosyan is a Turkish citizen of Armenian descent who was born in the
southeastern province of Diyarbakır in 1938. He has written six books.

Obama Refuses to Recognize Armenian Genocide

WASHINGTON-President Obama, once again, refused to recognize the
Armenian genocide in his annual message on this the 95th anniversary
of the genocide. This marks the second year that he has broken his
campaign pledge to properly recognize the genocide.

Below is Obama’s statement:

****

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release

April 24, 2010

Statement of President Barack Obama on Armenian Remembrance Day

On this solemn day of remembrance, we pause to recall that ninety-five
years ago one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century began. In
that dark moment of history, 1.5 million Armenians were massacred or
marched to their death in the final days of the Ottoman Empire.

Today is a day to reflect upon and draw lessons from these terrible
events. I have consistently stated my own view of what occurred in
1915, and my view of that history has not changed. It is in all of
our interest to see the achievement a full, frank and just
acknowledgment of the facts. The Meds Yeghern is a devastating
chapter in the history of the Armenian people, and we must keep its
memory alive in honor of those who were murdered and so that we do not
repeat the grave mistakes of the past. I salute the Turks who saved
Armenians in 1915 and am encouraged by the dialogue among Turks and
Armenians, and within Turkey itself, regarding this painful history.
Together, the Turkish and Armenian people will be stronger as they
acknowledge their common history and recognize their common humanity.

Even as we confront the inhumanity of 1915, we also are inspired by
the remarkable spirit of the Armenian people. While nothing can
bring back those who were killed in the Meds Yeghern, the
contributions that Armenians have made around the world over the last
ninety-five years stand as a testament to the strength, tenacity and
courage of the Armenian people. The indomitable spirit of the
Armenian people is a lasting triumph over those who set out to destroy
them. Many Armenians came to the United States as survivors of the
horrors of 1915. Over the generations Americans of Armenian descent
have richened our communities, spurred our economy, and strengthened
our democracy. The strong traditions and culture of Armenians also
became the foundation of a new republic which has become a part of the
community of nations, partnering with the world community to build a
better future.

Today, we pause with them and with Armenians everywhere to remember
the awful events of 1915 with deep admiration for their contributions
which transcend this dark past and give us hope for the future.

Senator Boxer, Colleagues Urge Administration To Recognize Armenian

BOXER, COLLEAGUES URGE ADMINISTRATION TO RECOGNIZE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

The office of Sen. Barbara A. Boxer, D-Calif., issued the following
news release:

U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer and a bipartisan group of 13 Senate
colleagues today wrote President Barack Obama asking him to formally
recognize the Armenian Genocide on April 24, Armenian Remembrance
Day 2010.

While affirming the importance of the U.S.-Turkey relationship, the
letter asks President Obama to "stand on the right side of history"
and acknowledge that the brutal murder of more than 1.5 million
Armenians by the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1923 was genocide.

The full text of the letter is below:

April 20, 2010

President Barack Obama The White House

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW

Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President:

As you know, April 24 marks Armenian Remembrance Day 2010, the
ninety-fifth anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Despite an
irrefutable body of evidence, the United States Government has yet
to recognize the events of 1915-1923 by their rightful name. We
urge you–on this April 24–to correct this injustice and finally
acknowledge one of the greatest atrocities of the 20th century for
what it was–genocide.

Over the years, this deliberate massacre of the Armenians has been
well-documented through eye-witness accounts and confirmed by numerous
scholars. Simply put–between 1915 and 1923, more than 1.5 million
Armenians were marched to their deaths in the deserts of the Middle
East, murdered in concentration camps, drowned at sea, and forced to
endure horrific acts of brutality at the hands of the Ottoman Empire.

In his memoirs, Henry Morgenthau, the American Ambassador to the
Ottoman Empire between 1913 and 1916, wrote: "When the Turkish
authorities gave the orders for these deportations, they were merely
giving the death warrant to a whole race; they understood this well,
and in their conversations with me, they made no particular attempt
to conceal the fact." And even as it was just beginning, the New
York Times reported the mass killing of Armenians as "systematic,"
"authorized," and "organized by the government."

Tragically, Adolf Hitler even used the Ottoman Empire’s action against
the Armenians to justify the extermination of the Jews, saying in 1939,
"Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?"

The fact is that many have affirmed the Armenian Genocide, and it
is long past time that the United States do the same, joining with
Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy,
Lebanon, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden,
Switzerland, Uruguay, Venezuela, the Vatican and over 40 U.S. states.

While we fully acknowledge the importance of the U.S.-Turkey
relationship, we should never, for any reason, fail to call a tragedy
of this magnitude by its rightful name. As such–on this April 24–we
urge you to stand on the right side of history and unequivocally
affirm the Armenian Genocide.

Thank you for your consideration of this important request.

Sincerely,

BAKU: Turkey Evaluating Content Of Armenian Statement About Protocol

TURKEY EVALUATING CONTENT OF ARMENIAN STATEMENT ABOUT PROTOCOLS

Burak Ozugergin Turkey mulls response after Armenian parliament
freezes protocols.

Turkey is studying what steps to take after Armenia’s ruling
coalition announced it was halting ratification of a historic accord
on normalizing bilateral relations, a Turkish diplomat said Thursday.

"We are evaluating the content of this [Armenian] statement and what
it means" legally and politically, foreign ministry spokesman Burak
Ozugergin told Agence France-Presse.

"In this context, we are also discussing steps that could be taken
in the coming period," he added, without elaborating.

In their statement earlier Thursday, the three parties that form a
majority in Armenia’s parliament accused Turkey of a refusal to ratify
the accord "without preconditions and in a reasonable timeframe."

"Armenia’s political majority considers unacceptable the Turkish
side’s position and, particularly, the latest statements by Turkish
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who makes the ratification of
the Protocols conditional on the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process,"
the statement said.

"We believe it is necessary to halt this process and remove
discussions of this question from the agenda … of the National
Assembly until the Turkish side is prepared to continue the process
without preconditions," the Armenian statement said.

Largest Armenian Taxpayers Major Importers

LARGEST ARMENIAN TAXPAYERS MAJOR IMPORTERS

The RA Committee of State Revenues reported that Armenia’s largest
taxpayers’ imports this February were half as much again as last
February. The 344 largest taxpayers’ imports totaled 53.4bn AMD
(about U.S. $140m).

The Committee claims that the reason for the import was not only
commercial interest in the purchase and sale, but also production
requirements. The Committee lists eight companies that carried out
major import transactions: ArmRusgazprom, Orange Armenia mobile
operator, Flash oil trader, and one of the major food importers
Alex Grig.

The improvement in the import situation caused an increase in customs
revenues. This February the customs duties paid by the largest Armenian
taxpayers totaled 9.9bn AMD (U.S. $26m) – a 49.9% increase as compared
with last February.

As regards exports, the largest taxpayers "fell short of
expectations." This February their exports totaled 19.8bn AMD (U.S.

$52m) – 2.7 times as less as their imports. So, as regards
specialization, the largest companies are importers rather than
exporters.

Among the exporter companies, the largest taxpayers are the Zangezur
Copper and Molybdenum Combine, Rusal Armenal, Armenian Copper Program,
Dino Gold Mining, Pure Iron Plant, and others.

ArmInfo. "Tonight we are all Armenians!" House Speaker Nancy
Pelosi (D-Calif.) declared as she began her address at the annual
congressional commemoration of the Armenian Genocide on April 21.

"We are tired of the story being told [about why Congress should
not adopt an Armenian Genocide resolution] but we are not tired of
fighting for the truth," Pelosi insisted as she spoke in front of
some 200 people, mostly Armenian Americans.

Speaker noted the importance of last month’s House Foreign Affairs
Committee vote on the Armenian Genocide resolution that "insisted
on the truth" and expressed hope that the vote was "of some comfort"
to Armenian Americans.

Pelosi added that she and other supporters of affirmation would not
rest until the federal government clearly recognizes the Armenian
Genocide.
