Recep Tayyip Erdogan: We will send back 40,000 Armenians working
illegally in Turkey, if necessary

[ 16 May 2009 10:55 ]

Warsaw – APA. `Turkey-Armenia relations are not the relations not
connected with any factor. There are issues connected with the
region. It is impossible to ignore them.

The problem between Azerbaijan and Armenia has an impact on us, too,’
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during his meeting
with students in Warsaw, APA reports quoting Turkish media. He said
the main demand of Turkey from Armenia was the withdrawal of troops
from the occupied Azerbaijani territories, including Nagorno Karabakh.

`We have not passed this decision, the UN passed the decision. Turkey
closed the borders with Armenia because of the occupation. There is
cause and consequence. The borders will be opened, when the
consequence is eliminated,’ he said.

Erdogan mentioned that 40,000 Armenians were living and working
illegally in Turkey.

`Why have they come to our country? Because there is great poverty in
Armenia. They are trying to earn their living in our country. We will
send them back, if necessary, but we do not do it because of
humaneness,’ he said.

Iranian Gas To Warm Armenian Hearths

Iran-Armenia gas pipeline at Saralenj Armenia’s famed cuisine will have
a slight Iranian flavor from this week, as they will be prepared —
at least partially — on Iranian natural gas within days.

Iran is set to turn on the tap this week to Armenia, on the back of a
deal signed in May 2004, said the National Iranian Gas Export Company
Managing Director, Seyyed Reza Kasaiizadeh, in an interview on Sunday
published in the Tehran Times.

Kasaiizadeh, who was on his way to Armenia on Monday for the formal
inauguration of the pipeline, said that the volume of gas exports
could reach 4 million cubic meters (141.3 million cu-ft) per day in
2011 and then rise to 6.3 million cubic meters (222.5 million cu-ft)
per day afterwards.

The gas is being transported via a 762-mm (30-inch) diameter pipeline
that runs for 113 km (71 miles) from Tabriz in East Azerbaijan Province
on to the Iran-Armenia border.

The deal was due to be activated in 2007, but Armenia requested a delay
as it said it was not ready to distribute the gas it was to receive,
Kasaiizadeh added.

Under the bilateral contract, Armenia is to pay for the gas by
electricity from Armenian power plants.

The announcement comes a month after the Armenian President, Serzh
Sarkisian, paid a two-day visit to Iran.

During his stay in Tehran, eight agreements were inked between the
two sides that underlined Iran and Armenia’s commitments to further
developing their relations through additional significant dollar
infrastructure, transport, and energy projects.

Dear Compatriots, I am congratulating warmly you on Victory and
Peace Day.

Each year on this remarkable day we get filled with the sacred
feelings of unity and solidarity, national spirit and dignity which
have helped us score crucial achievements. If we are to build a safe
future, our historical victories – from Avarayr to Shushi – should be
reassessed and comprehended from the perspective of today’s realities
and threats. We must bow low before the memory of several thousands
of brave Armenians who gave their lives to save the nation and the
Motherland, as well as to earn the right of living in freedom and
dignity in a sovereign country.

Never can we forget that the people of Armenia made a valuable
contribution struggling against fascism during World War II.

Any Armenian cares just as much for our recent victories – those
heroic chapters written during the fight for Artsakh’s freedom as
they are the proof of our nation’s military skills and fighting spirit.

ANKARA: Turkey to open border if Armenia stops occupation of NK

Anadolu Agency, Turkey
May 9 2009

TURKEY WILL OPEN BORDER WITH ARMENIA IF ARMENIA STOPS OCCUPATION OF
KARABAKH, SAYS ERDOGAN

ISTANBUL (A.A) – 09.05.2009 – Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan said Turkey would open its border with Armenia if Yerevan
stopped its occupation of Upper Karabakh. In an interview with
state-run TV broadcaster TRT, Erdogan said it was the precondition to
re-open the border gate.

Turkey cut all diplomatic ties with Yerevan and closed a border gate
with its northeastern neighbor in 1993 after Armenia occupied Upper
Karabakh region in Azerbaijan.

Erdogan also said that there were no problems in relation between
Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Upon a question on talks with the International Monetary Fund, or IMF,
on a possible loan deal, Erdogan said Turkey saw IMF officials
irresolute.

Erdogan said Turkey would ink a deal with the IMF if it would be in
the best interest of Turkish people.

"Turkey is a country that can stand on its own legs," Erdogan stated.

"Moreover, we are a partner country in IMF," he said, adding that his
government was disappointed as the fund should be the one to help
partner countries instead of raising difficulties for them in some
cases.

"There is no need to be sorry if it (IMF) is still irresolute," he
said.

Asked about the cause of irresolution, Erdogan said IMF asked Turkey
to lower expenses.

"We can not lower those figures. If we do it, then we will have
difficulties in investments. We want to continue making
investments. If we stop them, there will be problems in employment,"
he added. (TÇ-GC)
