Sweden Labels Mass World War I Killing Of Armenians Genocide With
1-vote Margin Mar. 11, 2010

(AP) STOCKHOLM (AP) – Sweden’s parliament narrowly approved a
resolution Thursday recognizing the 1915 mass killing of Armenians
in Turkey as genocide.

Swedish news agency TT said Turkey recalled its ambassador from Sweden
to protest the surprise decision, which was taken in a 131-130 vote
in the 349-seat assembly. Eighty-eight lawmakers were absent during
the vote.

"After 95 years it is time for people who have suffered so long to
obtain redress," said Gulan Avci, a Liberal Party lawmaker who broke
with her party’s line and voted to recognize the Armenian genocide.

Avci is a Kurdish immigrant from Turkey.

Historians estimate that up to 1.5 million Armenians were killed by
Ottoman Turks around the time of World War I. Turkey denies that the
deaths constituted genocide, saying the toll has been inflated and
those killed were victims of civil war and unrest.

The governing center-right coalition opposed the measure but it
passed because a handful of center-right lawmakers sided with the
left-leaning opposition, which had proposed the resolution.

In the U.S., a congressional committee approved a similar resolution
last week in a 23-22 vote that would send the measure to the full
House of Representatives, if the leadership decided to bring it up.

Minutes after the vote, Turkey withdrew its ambassador to the U.S.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said he regretted the Parliament’s
decision, saying it "will unfortunately not have a positive effect
on the ongoing normalization process between Turkey and Armenia."

Turkish Ambassador to Sweden Zergun Koroturk told TT she had received
instructions to go back to Turkey immediately after the vote.

"It’s logical," she was quoted as saying.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Iran currently has no missiles capable of striking
Europe and the US, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on
Wednesday.

"It is evident that Iran currently poses no threat to the US and
European countries… At the moment, Iran has no missiles capable
of striking Europe, let alone the US, and is unlikely to develop
[such missiles] in the foreseeable future," Lavrov said.

Russia can not allow US plans to deploy elements of its missile shield
in Europe to threaten the effectiveness of its nuclear deterrent,
Russian Foreign Minister also stated.

US officials admit that the missile defense system in Europe might
be able to hit Russian inter-continental ballistic missiles by 2020.

"The US administration says its global missile shield program is
not directed against Russia. However, our conclusions on the true
potential of the future missile defense system should be based on
specific military and technical factors, not on words," Lavrov said.

"We will not accept a state of affairs when a missile defense system
poses a threat to Russia’s nuclear deterrence potential," RIA Novosti
cited him as saying.

Canadian VoipJet telecommunication operator
() put Karabakh as a part of Armenia
in the list of countries where their services are available. This
fact aroused indignation in Azerbaijan.

Azeri news websites called on readers to sign the letter to Canadian
company demanding to correct the mistake. The letter had international
documents attached proving that Karabakh is included in Azerbaijan.

Earlier, Euronews TV company also presented Karabakh not as a part of
Azerbaijan, including Azerbaijan in the list of Asian states, while
Armenia and Georgia in European list. After several complaints by
Azerbaijani side, the "error" was corrected, though such cases repeat.

In fact, international community can do nothing but see real facts,
namely Karabakh is not a part of Azerbaijan. Numerous complaints
voiced by Azerbaijan look like fighting windmills.

U.S. Should Call Armenian Killings Genocide

U.S. SHOULD CALL ARMENIAN KILLINGS GENOCIDE
By Leslie Campbell

Between the years of 1915 and 1923 in World War I, about 1.5 million
ethnic Armenians died in Ottoman, Turkey. These victims died either
from the merciless Turkish soldiers or from starvation and disease.

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, genocide can be classified
as "the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political
or cultural group." Turkey indicted leaders of the massacres after
World War I, and even acknowledged that the atrocities did occur
but insisted they were not "systematic" killings. Systematic or not,
a significant number of Armenians were mass-killed.

Controversy concerning this issue and the definition of genocide
is raising questions and arguments in Washington D.C. During his
presidential campaign, President Obama promised the American people
he would, in fact, deem the mass killings genocide. All of a sudden,
his standpoint has changed and with a 23-22 House of Representatives
vote, the Obama administration has urged the House to push back
the resolution.

In 2006, the French Parliament voted that not recognizing the killings
in Armenia as genocide was a criminal act. In response to this ruling,
Turkey denounced any former relationship established with France.

Several other countries have come forward to recognize the genocide
but the U.S. stays stagnant.

First of all, when you kill hundreds of thousands of people
from a single country, it is, in my opinion, genocide. Secondly,
this resolution has been on the horizon for years, with the Bush
administration in 2007 pushing the matter to the back burner to relieve
any tension that might ensue with Turkey. Obviously, this is due to
the Iraq war and Turkey’s involvement and ties with the U.S.

and the war effort.

Turkey has claimed a vote determining the events as genocide would
undoubtedly hurt the relationship between the U.S. and Turkey, as
well has hinder any resolution occurring between Armenia and Turkey.

Our excuse for backing out of the resolution is simply that we now
believe it would hurt the on-going negotiations between Armenia and
Turkey. The real truth is that Turkey, due to its ongoing trade
relationship with Iran, will be able to help the U.S. limit the
nuclear program in Iran. We refuse to identify the monstrosity that
occurred for the sake of our own political agenda. Even Mrs. Clinton,
a key leader on this issue, has publicly acknowledged that the change
of mindset in Washington is due to ongoing circumstances that have
"changed in very significant ways."

Letting another country threaten us because we plan on holding them
accountable for their actions is not the American way. America is at
war and we do need to stay loyal to our allies, but the recognition
of the massive loss of Armenian life is long overdue.

Boxing: Darchinyan Dominates To Keep Superfly Crowns

BOXING: DARCHINYAN DOMINATES TO KEEP SUPERFLY CROWNS
Rancho Mirage

March 7, 2010 Sunday 4:25 AM GMT

Armenian-born Australian Vic Darchinyan kept his World Boxing Council
and World Boxing Association super flyweight titles Saturday with a
unanimous decision over Mexico’s Rodrigo Guerrero.

Judges gave dominating Darchinyan the victory by scores of 120-108,
118-110 and 117-111 in a fight where he pounded the challenger
relentlessly round after round but could not claim his 28th career
knockout triumph.

"This kid, I respect how he took punches," Darchinyan said. "I couldn’t
believe how he took punches. He kept coming back. I respect him. He’s
good. I thought I was going to stop him. I gave him good punches but
I couldn’t."

Darchinyan, 34, improved to 34-2 with one drawn while Guerrero, 22,
fell to 13-2 with one drawn.

After opening early cuts over Guerrero’s eyes, Darchinyan began
inflicting punishing flurries upon the Mexican in the eighth round
but could not send him down, Guerrero counter-atacking when Darchinyan
was spent.

By the end, Guerrero was thwarted by being unable to do anything to
threaten Darchinyan, but the Aussie could not impose an early end to
the night.

Darchinyan might call an early end to his reign, however, saying
after the fight he hopes to move up in weight.

"I would love to move up. I’m very powerful," Darchinyan said. "I
could beat the champions there. I want to move up and fight better
champions."

Darchinyan knocked out Mexico’s Tomas Rojas in the second round
three months ago at Rancho Mirage to keep his crowns after making an
ill-fated rise to bantamweight last July, losing to Ghana’s Joseph
Agbeko.

ANCA CHALLENGES OBAMA ADMINISTRATION ATTACK ON GENOCIDE RESOLUTION

— Hachikian Voices Moral Outrage over Administration’s Complicity
in Turkey’s Genocide Denials

WASHINGTON, DC – Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA)
Chairman Ken Hachikian gave voice to the profound moral outrage of
Armenian American voters over the decision last week by President
Obama, who had earlier this year abandoned his own pledge to
recognize the Armenian Genocide, to launch a White House drive to
block proper Congressional commemoration of this crime against
humanity.

In a letter, sent today to the White House, Hachikian noted: "Mr.
President, in attempting to enforce Ankara’s gag rule on U.S.
recognition of the Armenian Genocide – both within your
Administration and now in Congress – you have, very sadly, signaled
to all the world that our silence on genocide can be bought in
exchange for perceived geopolitical advantage or compromised under
threat from a foreign power. Your policy is now fully complicit in
Turkey’s campaign of Genocide denial."

Despite threats and intimidation from the Turkish Government and a
last-minute Obama Administration attempt to block the measure, the
House Foreign Affairs Committee adopted the Armenian Genocide
Resolution (H.Res.252) on March 4th, paving the way for a vote on
this genocide-prevention legislation by the full U.S. House of
Representatives.

March 8, 2010

The Honorable Barack Obama
President of the United States
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, D.C. 20500

Dear Mr. President:

I am writing, on behalf of Armenian American voters, friends of the
Armenian American community, and genocide-prevention advocates from
across our nation, to share our profound disappointment over your
recently launched campaign to block Congressional recognition of
the Armenian Genocide.

Your Administration’s efforts to undermine the adoption of the
Armenian Genocide Resolution, coming, as they do, in the wake of
both your broken pledge to recognize the Armenian Genocide and your
abandoned promise to "strongly support" the Armenian Genocide
Resolution, represent a stark departure from the commitments you
made to the American people during your campaign for office.
Rather than honoring your words, you are, today, using the full
force of your Administration to attempt to block Members of
Congress from doing exactly that which you yourself promised,
namely properly commemorating this crime against humanity.

As you recall, as a U.S. Senator, you sharply criticized President
Bush’s policy of non-recognition and opposition to Congressional
commemoration as "inexcusable." In fact, while in Congress you were
joined by then-Senators Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton in formally
calling on President Bush to properly mark this crime against
humanity, noting that full U.S. recognition of the Armenian
Genocide serves "the best interest of our nation and the entire
global community." While running for the presidency, as early as
January of 2008 and as late as four days before the 2008 election,
when the "soccer diplomacy" between Armenia and Turkey had already
begun, you assured voters that you both strongly supported passage
of the Armenian Genocide Resolution and would, as President,
recognize the Armenian Genocide.

Compounding your betrayal of your campaign promise to call upon
Turkey to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide – which you explained
was "not an allegation, a personal opinion, or a point of view, but
rather a widely documented fact supported by an overwhelming body
of historical evidence" – is the intense pressure that your
Administration has applied to the impoverished, blockaded, and
land-locked country of Armenia to accepting one-sided, pro-Turkish
Protocols that call this very crime into question. Your Secretary
of State, Hillary Clinton, who pledged to recognize the Armenian
Genocide during her own campaign for the White House, has, in a
statement that is both profoundly offensive and lacking in any
moral or historical basis – publicly put your Administration on
record as supporting the Turkish government’s long held position
that third party nations should not speak about the Armenian
Genocide.

Mr.
Your policy is now fully complicit in
Turkey’s campaign of Genocide denial.

In promising American voters a principled course of action as a
candidate and then, under foreign pressure, pursuing exactly the
opposite course as President, you have transformed the broad
support you enjoyed during your campaign among Armenian American
voters into outrage and anger toward both you and also, fairly or
unfairly, the party that you are leading into the November
elections.

I would like to take this opportunity, once again, to encourage you
to honor your as-yet unfulfilled pledge to remain actively engaged
with Armenian American leaders. As it stands now, more than a year
into your Administration, despite the considerable personal
attention you have devoted to Armenian issues and your multiple
discussions with Turkey’s leaders about the Armenian Genocide, you
have not even once met with the American citizens descended from
the survivors of this crime. As a first step toward addressing
this imbalance, I would respectfully recommend that you call a
meeting, at your first opportunity, with our broad-based community
leadership.

Sincerely,

Kenneth V. Hachikian
Chairman
