Moscow court returns elder Khachaturian sisters’ case to prosecutors

Panorama, Armenia
Feb 1 2021

The Moscow court has granted a request to hand the case of the two elder Khachaturian sisters who killed their abusive father back to a prosecutor's office, a lawyer told Sputnik news agency.

The plaintiff's legal team filed the request on Friday, arguing that the indictment incorrectly determines the crime's motive as "violent actions of the father." The defense also sought to return the case to prosecutors, insisting that the girls acted in "necessary self-defense." The prosecutor objected to both motions.

Late Mikhail Khachaturian's relatives earlier asked to open a criminal case against the deceased, which they hope would help reject allegations of him physically and sexually abusing his daughters.

It is reminded that in July 2018, the three sisters, Krestina, 19, Angelina, 18, and Maria, 17, killed their father in his sleep in their apartment in Moscow. The high-profile case has provoked intense public scrutiny and discussion in Russia. The sisters have been charged with premeditated murder, while the defense claims that they acted in self-defense, as their father had physically and psychologically abused them, which has been confirmed by investigators.

The girls were initially put in a pre-trial detention facility, but then were released under house arrest.

The two elder siblings, Krestina and Angelina, are facing from eight to 20 years in prison, while Maria is facing admittance into a mental ward instead of prison, as she was determined to have been criminally insane at the moment of the crime.

A total of 197 historical and cultural monuments, about 800 paintings, graphic works and sculptures of the Museum of Fine Arts in the Artsakh town of Shushi, as well as more than 700 specimens kept at the Shushi Geological Museum came under the control of Azerbaijan after the recent war, MP Anna Kostanyan from the opposition Bright Armenia Party said on Tuesday.

In a post on Facebook, the lawmaker said she addressed a letter to Russia Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopirkin on November 26, asking him to help the Armenians to evacuate or at least videotape the collection of 4 state and 2 private museums in Shushi upon the mediation of the commander of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Artsakh, Rustam Muradov

“Notably, during one of his regular discussions Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov highlighted the protection of historical and cultural monuments in the Azerbaijani-held territories of Artsakh and said that he had talked to UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, who said a group of specialists would be send to Artsakh to assess on the ground the extent of damage to all historical sites and cultural values, the possibility of their restoration and the issue of their preservation.

“Thus, clear statements were made by the Russian official and the UNESCO leadership. What steps are our authorities taking to save the historical and cultural heritage from the criminal intents of the Azerbaijanis?” she wrote.

Specialists of the International Mine Action Center of the Russian Defense Ministry continue to work on demining the territory of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).

In the course of demining and clearing of the outskirts of the town of Martakert, Russian peacekeepers are using modern robotic systems "Uran-6" and dog mine detection services that ensure the safety of military personnel while performing hazardous works and to maintain a high pace cleaning of terrain in all weather conditions, the ministry said in a statement on Monday.

Since November 23, 2020, during the operation, engineering units of the Russian peacekeeping forces have cleared about 551 hectares of territory, 205.3 km of roads, 783 houses, including 25 socially significant objects, and detected and neutralized more than 23.7 thousand explosive objects.

Discovered explosive objects and unexploded ammunition are removed and destroyed at a specially equipped landfill. Ammunition that cannot be evacuated is destroyed on the spot with all necessary safety measures provided during blasting operations.

With the assistance of Russian peacekeepers, the restoration of vital engineering communications continues in the areas affected by the war.
