Azerbaijani press: Azerbaijani, Turkish Air Forces mark Baku’s liberation anniversary [PHOTO]

Azerbaijani and Turkish Air Forces carried out demonstration flights over western Ganja city on September 15 to mark the 102nd anniversary of the liberation of Baku with the help of the Turkish army.

The flights have involved combat aircraft and helicopters of both countries and started at 14:00 over the Ganja city.

It should be noted that the Caucasian Islamic Army led by Nuru Pasha together with the newly formed Azerbaijani National Army and volunteers, liberated Baku from Armenian and Bolshevik occupation on September 15 in 1918. Following the liberation, Baku was declared the capital of the Azerbaijani Democratic Republic, which became the first democratic republic in the Muslim East.

Azerbaijani and Turkish presidents exchanged letters on September 15 on the occasion of Baku’s liberation day. Aliyev said that is a very significant day for the people of Azerbaijan, adding that “this historic event will always be remembered,”

A military parade of Azerbaijan and Turkish soldiers was held in Baku in 2018 with the participation of the two countries’ presidents to mark the liberation day.

Expert warns of growing pressure on Armenian captive in Azerbaijan as Red Cross officials fail to visit him

Panorama, Armenia
Sept 12 2020

Tigran Abrahamyan, the head of the Yerevan-based Henaket think tank, took to Facebook on Saturday to remind that 20 days have passed since Armenian officer Gurgen Alaverdyan mistakenly crossed into Azerbaijan and was captured there, but Red Cross officials have not visited him yet.

“Azerbaijan has carried out various political, legal and propaganda actions in regard to the incident. These are ordinary primitive events, which are usually carried out by Azerbaijan, but I will not dwell on the details at this time,” he wrote.

“The biggest problem at the moment is that the representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which is currently dealing with the issue, have not met with our serviceman yet to provide the necessary assistance,” Abrahamyan stressed.

The expert underlined that the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War clearly sets out all the details of the Red Cross officials’ visits in such situations, the rights of POWs and their family members.

“Accordingly, they should have already visited the serviceman, passed details about his health condition, and, in general, the developments around him to Alaverdyan's family members and made some information public,” Abrahamyan said.

“The later the ICRC meetings and contacts with our officer, the greater the pressure on the serviceman and the problems with the exercise of the rights enshrined in the relevant convention,” he stressed.

The expert called for immediate measures to come into contact with the Armenian captive and to take him under international legal protection.

Armenia's foreign policy priorities have not changed – highlights from foreign ministry press secretary

    JAMnews. Yerevan

Press Secretary for the Armenian Foreign Ministry Anna Naghdalyan spoke about the country’s foreign policy priorities and presented her department’s position on the most pressing issues.

The discussion, in particular, turned to settling the Karabakh conflict, a prisoner exchange with Azerbaijan, cooperation with Russia, as well as information about alleged mercenaries from Syria in Azerbaijan.

More details below.

Cooperation with Nagorno-Karabakh

Naghdalyan stated that for the last 29 years, Nagorno-Karabakh has proved its ability to ensure the security of its population and to fulfill its international obligations, in particular, those concerning the development of democracy and human rights. At the same time, she says that Armenia is ready to continue to strengthen its close cooperation with Nagorno-Karabakh.

Settling the Karabakh conflict

Armenia’s priorities in the negotiation and settlement process are continuing the ceasefire, avoiding using threats or force, and putting a stop to hateful rhetoric.

The press secretary recalled that the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan declared that they were ready to continue negotiations. However, the exact date when the negotiations will resume has not yet been set.

The only format for settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict for Armenia remains the co-chairmanship of the OSCE Minsk Group. And in no way is Turkey considered an intermediary.

“Judging by the way it is behaving, Turkey seems to really want to prove itself as a party to the conflict, which is another manifestation of Turkey’s destabilizing policy”, says Anna Naghdalyan.

The Armenian officer who was taken prisoner and the prisoner exchange

Representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross still managed to visit the captive Armenian officer in Azerbaijan, the press secretary said.

The Azerbaijani defense ministry announced on August 23 that the Azerbaijani armed forces had captured the “saboteur”. The Armenian side claims that Gurgen Alaverdyan got lost due to unfavorable weather conditions, and the idea that he was captured and kidnapped is also being considered.

The Armenian foreign ministry believes that the humiliation the Armenian serviceman is subjected to in Azerbaijan is a gross violation of international humanitarian law. This is in reference to a video message from Alaverdyan, where he says that he “regrets his actions and wants to serve Azerbaijan”. In Armenia, they believe that the Azerbaijani side forced the Armenian officer to read this message aloud.

Naghdalyan says that Armenian citizens who find themselves in Azerbaijan are usually accused on far-fetched charges, despite the fact that they did not commit any crimes within the country. Thus, in her opinion, “Azerbaijan is trying … to return the murderers who are serving their sentences in Nagorno-Karabakh back to Azerbaijan”.

These alleged murderers are Azerbaijanis Dilgam Askerov and Shahbaz Guliyev, who are convicted of sabotage and the murder of an Armenian teenager and an officer. The Azerbaijani side claims that they crossed into Armenian-controlled to visit the graves of their ancestors.

In addition to officer Gurgen Alaverdyan, Karen Ghazaryan and Arayik Ghazaryan are imprisoned in Azerbaijan. The first is considered a saboteur in Baku, while Armenians say he is just mentally ill. The second, according to the Azerbaijani side, escaped from the military unit due to inhumane treatment. In Armenia, it is believed that he got lost.

From the words of the press secretary, it becomes clear that Armenia will not agree to the exchange:

“There are no prisoners of war on the territory of Armenia. Just this year, two citizens of Azerbaijan ended up in Armenia. And criminal cases are not fabricated against them, they are not considered prisoners of war, their rights and dignity are respected”.

Cooperation with Russia

Naghdalyan commented on Azerbaijan’s statements that Russia is supplying a large volume of military equipment to Armenia:

“Azerbaijan says that allied countries (in this case, Armenia and Russia) should not closely cooperate in the military-technical sphere. Perhaps this is new information for them, but allied relations between Armenia and Russia were established back in the 90s ”.

Mercenaries from Syria in Azerbaijan

The international press reported that Turkey is transporting mercenaries to Azerbaijan from the Afrin and Azaz regions of Syria, and that they are “preparing for a blitzkrieg in Armenia”.

Naghdalyan states that the Armenian foreign ministry is looking into this information.

“It’s a real cause for concern…Such a danger exists, especially when you take into account the possibility of involving religious extremists in Azerbaijan, as well Turkish terrorists”.

Turkey pulls fight with Armenia, as more countries voice East Med concerns

The Arab Weekly
Aug 17 2020

ANKARA –Turkey on Monday slammed Armenia’s remarks on the Eastern Mediterranean, two days after Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan held talks with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and Cypriot Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides.

During the talks, held via phone, Armenia reaffirmed “its unconditional support” to Greece and Cyprus, expressing concerns over Turkey’s activities in the Aegean-Eastern Mediterranean region.

Armenia also said it was “closely following the latest developments and naval mobilisation in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean caused by the Turkish illegal and provocative actions.”

Tensions between NATO members Greece and Turkey have risen over the past week after Turkey sent the Oruc Reis survey vessel, escorted by warships, to map out possible oil and gas drilling in territory both countries claim jurisdiction over.

The Oruc Reis, which is between Cyprus and the Greek island of Crete, will continue work until August 23, Turkey said.

The vessel has been shadowed by Greek frigates and on Wednesday warships from the two sides were involved in a mild collision.

“This destabilising posturing in the Eastern Mediterranean manifests continued aggressive and expansionist policy that Turkey has been pursuing in its neighbouring regions,” the Armenian foreign ministry said in a statement.

“We reiterate Armenia’s unequivocal support and solidarity with Greece and Cyprus and call on Turkey to de-escalate the situation, respect the International Law and cease all actions within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Greece and Cyprus,” the ministry added.

In 1920, Armenia and Turkey signed the landmark peace accord to restore ties and open their shared border after a century of hostility stemming from the mass killing of Armenians by Ottoman forces during the first world war.

The deal needed parliamentary approval in both countries, but was never ratified, and the Armenian and Turkish governments have since accused each other of trying to change the deal.

Turkey accepts that many Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire were killed in clashes with Ottoman forces during the first world war, but contests the figures and denies that the killings were systematically orchestrated and constitute a genocide.

Saturday’s Armenian statements drew the ire of Turkey, prompting Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy to condemn what he called “a new example of irresponsibility.”

“After Armenia’s provocative statement about the Treaty of Sevres, its opinion on the Eastern Mediterranean is “a new example of irresponsibility and without limits,” Aksoy said.

“We see that Armenia, which attempts to present an opinion on the Eastern Mediterranean, is in fundamental error about world geography and its place in this geography. The issue here is not Lake Sevan, but the Eastern Mediterranean,” he added.

The Turkish foreign ministry spokesman also said that Turkey will defend its “rights,” likely escalating tensions that could have far-reaching strategic consequences for the entire European Union, well beyond the Eastern Mediterranean.

“No matter what happens, Turkey will defend its rights and the rights of Turkish Cypriots in the eastern Mediterranean stemming from international law. No alliance of evil can afford to prevent that. Those who think otherwise have not learned anything from history,” Aksoy said.

Earlier on Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country will not back down to threats of sanctions nor to incursions on its claimed territory in the Mediterranean Sea, where it is in a standoff with EU member Greece over oil and gas exploration rights.

European Union foreign ministers on Friday said Ankara’s actions were antagonistic and dangerous after a meeting requested by Athens.

“We will never bow to banditry on our continental shelf. We will not back down against the language of sanctions and threats,” Erdogan said in the north-eastern city of Rize.

EU foreign ministers met via video conference on Friday and said Turkey’s naval movements would lead to a “heightened risk of dangerous incidents.”

Relations between Greece and Turkey have long been fraught with tension. Disputes have ranged from boundaries of offshore continental shelves and airspace to the ethnically split island of Cyprus. In 1996 they almost went to war over ownership of uninhabited islets in the Aegean Sea.
