Yerevan and Tehran are considering liberalization of bilateral transit and transportation. This is what Minister of Economy of Armenia Vahan Kerobyan said in response to deputies’ questions during today’s discussion on the draft state budget for 2022 in parliament.

Kerobyan recalled that he had the opportunity to discuss this matter with Minister of Roads and Urban Development of Iran Mohammad Eslami in May of this year.

“Discussions are in progress. Armenian cars may enter Iran and take cargo from the Bandar Abbas port located in the Persian Gulf, and Armenia, in its turn, will lower the customs duties for Iranian cars. There is already a Memorandum of Understanding on this,” Kerobyan said.

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 2, ARMENPRESS. Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures Gnel Sanosyan says it is unclear what maps will be used to determine the borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan, but underscores that for example all pre-1920 maps include the Al Lakes as territories of Armenia, thus if these maps were to be used the changes in this section would be in favor of Armenia.

“There are different discussions, different maps,” Sanosyan told reporters. “Regarding what maps will be used as a basis, what matters is what legal status these maps will have. That is, even if these maps are Soviet-era maps, they must be legally clarified and accepted by all sides for it to be the basis.”

Speaking about the maps from the 1920s, he said that in this case significant changes could happen. When asked about which side would benefit in case of these changes, he said: “In terms of the Al Lakes, in our favor, because as far as I know the Al Lakes are mentioned as territories of Armenia in all maps prior to the late 1920s. The lakes are on this side of a certain line on these maps."

Al Lakes are presently not under Armenian control.

Nevertheless, the minister again stressed that it is unclear at this moment which maps will be used.

Masterminds of 1999 parliament attack will be brought to justice, vows Speaker Alen Simonyan

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 27, ARMENPRESS. The incumbent government will do everything in order to bring to justice the masterminds of the 1999 parliament shooting, Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan said after a commemoration event.

Asked whether or not their political team had the goal of re-opening the investigation to reveal the potential plotters of the assassination who are still at large, Simonyan said: “I think that our society knows the main reasons, main participants and the issues which have been left open, like they knew that the elections were being rigged for more than 20 years. I find it needless to voice names now, but I assure you that we will all have the answers to these questions also from the legal perspective.”

He noted that as a government official he doesn’t have the right to make any statement which would be deemed as containing accusations and would potentially impact any possible future legal process. “But politically I already said that it is natural that the main actors are convicted and jailed. Today we must understand the reasons, the true instigators, the people who perhaps had either political or non-political interests from that all. And our society knows the interests of those people, and I think I am entitled to voice this now,” he said.

He didn’t rule out the possibility that the 1999 assassination of Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan and Speaker Karen Demirchyan, and several other government officials could had been linked with the purported plan on “exchanging Meghri”.

“The situation which we have today pertaining to the war began on October 27, 1999. If the October 27 [attack] didn’t happen, we wouldn’t have reached this situation,” he said.

“We will do everything in order for the masterminds to appear behind bars, I think no one should have doubts about this. What happened [on October 27] broke the backbone of our statehood. We are still reaping the consequences of everything that happened on October 27. This is what we should be careful of, we should think that at some moment this process must come to an end, because the flywheel which started on October 27 of 1999 is unfortunately still spinning and having its consequences to this day,” Simonyan said.

The Speaker of Parliament said that the current opposition ought to avoid speaking about the October 27 attack because it had happened during their tenure as government. “Both the society and all of us can have many questions, for example why the National Security Service director was not in attendance in parliament on that day,” he said.

22 years ago on this day, a group of five heavily armed gunmen led by Nairi Hunanyan stormed into the parliament while it was in session and assassinated Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan, Speaker Karen Demirchyan, Deputy Speakers Yuri Bakhshyan and Ruben Miroyan, as well as three lawmakers and a Cabinet member. The gunmen held the remaining MPs in parliament hostage until surrendering to authorities the next day.

The five perpetrators, which include Hunanyan’s younger brother and uncle, were sentenced to life in prison in 2003.

Armenian analysts criticize PACE’s resolution

Caucasian Knot, EU
Sept 30 2021

The resolution of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) is biased, since the authors of the document have missed a number of important points, the participants in the Yerevan discussion have stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the PACE adopted a resolution, in which it demanded from Azerbaijan to release all the Armenian prisoners of war (POWs), and called on both parties to investigate war crimes and start a dialogue.

In many of its provisions, the PACE's resolution is maintaining a proper balance, while the most important question – who had unleashed the autumn war in Nagorno-Karabakh – remains open, David Amiryan, a deputy director of the "Open Society-Armenia Fund" programmes, stated on September 29 during a discussion in Yerevan. He believes that when drafting the resolution, the authors could have referred, in particular, to the report of Freedom House, which indicates who had started the war.

There are numerous proofs of the involvement of Syrian mercenaries with the assistance of Turkey, but even here the authors put an equal sign, while ethnic Armenians fought on the side of Nagorno-Karabakh, Mr Amiryan has added.

Siranush Saakyan, an advocate, who is representing the interests of Armenian POWs at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), has also noted that the resolution fails to provide an objective coverage of the conflict. In her opinion, this is precisely why appeals to the ECtHR are an important component. "The judiciary is more independent of political preferences. And it is no coincidence that the ECtHR has informed the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe that Azerbaijan is not fulfilling its obligations before the ECtHR. Already in about ten cases, the ECtHR has issued decisions stating that Azerbaijan is guilty of ethnically-based crimes," Ms Saakyan has concluded.

An investigation is underway after a suspect used a baseball bat to smash multiple stained-glass windows at an Armenian church in Van Nuys, police said.

Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department were called to Saint Peter Armenian Apostolic Church located at the intersection of Louis Avenue and Sherman Way at 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

Police are investigating after St. Peter Armenian Church in Van Nuys was vandalized.

According to Fr. Shnork Demirjian, the incident occurred one day after the 30th anniversary of the independence of Armenia.

"When you destroy iconic images that represent religion or ethnicity that’s categorized as a hate crime. In our case, destroying the image of Jesus Christ on the stained glass should be undoubtedly considered a hate crime," Fr. Demirjian stated.

He says in total, eight stained-glass windows were blown out. A sign on the church of their neighboring property was also vandalized.

Fr. Demirjian is calling the attack premeditated and deliberate.

"I don’t have any doubt that this is a hate crime, and based off the video surveillance footage a premeditated and deliberate attack on the sanctuary and the a Christian faith. This is an Armenian church getting attacked, with mostly Armenian faithful worshippers. Armenians have become a target since the Artsakh/Karabagh war last September 2020," he added.

The suspect is described as a man in his 20’s dressed in black and masked, he was seen on camera with a black duffel bag and a baseball bat.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Los Angeles Police Department. Anonymous tips can be called in to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or submitted online at lacrimestoppers.org.
