Armenian, Russian premiers hail 'dynamic' growth in relations

[Armenian News note: the below is translated from the Russian edition of RFE/RL]

The prime ministers of Armenia and Russia have highlighted dynamic growth in bilateral ties.

Armenia's Nikol Pashinyan and Russia's Dmitry Medvedev made the remarks at a meeting in Kyrgyzstan on 9 August, the report said. It was citing the press service of the Armenian prime minister who it said was paying a working visit to the Central Asian country.

The two men discussed a wide range of matters related to Armenian-Russian strategic relationship and touched on current matters regarding bilateral cooperation. They discussed further development of commercial and economic relations, increase in trade, and implementation of joint projects. The two prime ministers said there was dynamic growth in bilateral relations and called for more of active work to step up and develop relations between the two allies, the report said.

Pashinyan praised Armenian-Russian strategic cooperation and highlighted progress in tourism. He said that the number of Russian tourists in Armenia in the first six months of 2019 saw a 19-per-cent increase on the same period in 2018. The total number of foreign tourists in Armenia in the first six months of 2019 increased 12 per cent, Pashinyan added. He also hailed the efficient operation of the rapid reaction mechanism for problems emerging at the Verkhny Lars border checkpoint on the Russian-Georgian border. In the context of further development of bilateral Armenian-Russian relations Pashinyan highlighted the importance of full use of the overall potential of the Moscow-led Eurasian Economic Union.

The two prime ministers also touched on matters related to cooperation in the fields of gas, atomic energy, air transportation, and other current matters. They also exchanged opinions on matters that have been reported by Armenian and Russian media lately, the report concluded.

Linda Kasabian: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Linda Kasabian was 20 years old when she became a member of Charles Manson’s “Family” in 1969. Later, she became the prosecution’s star witness at their trial in 1970, according to biography.com.

Kasabian has been a popular figure in pop culture since the brutal slayings in 1969. Actresses including Clea DuVall, Marilyn Burns, Erin Marie Hogan, Michelle Briggs, Tamara Hope, and MacKenzie Mauzy have played her in various films. Billie Lourd portrays Kasabian in the “American Horror Story: Cult” episode “Charles (Manson) in Charge.” A British band even used her name, calling themselves Kasabian.

Here’s what you need to know:

According to biography.com, Linda Darlene Drouin was born on June 21, 1949, in Biddeford, Maine. She was raised in the New England town of Milford, New Hampshire, by her father, Rosaire Drouin, and her mother, Joyce Taylor.

Rosaire was a construction worker and Joyce was a homemaker. They reportedly struggled financially and emotionally until Rosaire abandoned the family when Linda was still a young girl.

Rosaire and Joyce both remarried. Linda was the eldest child, and her mother Joyce, with so many younger children and stepchildren to care for, said was unable to devote the necessary attention to her teenage daughter.

“I didn’t have time to listen to her problems,” Joyce told a Long Beach Newspaper in 1970. “A lot of what has happened to Linda is my fault.”

Linda claimed her stepfather, Jake Byrd, mistreated her and her mother. At 16 years old, Linda dropped out of high school and ran away from home. Shortly thereafter, she married Robert Peasley. According to cielodrive.com, Linda and Robert lived together for three months, however, they divorced when she was 17 years old.

Linda then traveled to Boston, where she married a “hippie-type,” Armenian American Robert Kasabian. The two reportedly lived at a “hippie pad” in Lake Tahoe for a while. Linda gave birth to a daughter Tanya in 1968.

When her second marriage started to deteriorate, the article stated that Linda and Tanya moved back to New Hampshire to live with Joyce. Later, Kasabian contacted Linda and invited her to meet him in Los Angeles. Linda wanted to patch things up and therefore went to Los Angeles.

According to her biography, Linda was a pregnant, 20-year-old, two-time divorcee, with an infant daughter when she met Charles Manson through Catherine “Gypsy” Share on July 4, 1969. Later, Linda moved to the Spahn Ranch with Manson and his followers.

Linda reportedly found Manson’s message to be peaceful at first, however, as time went on she realized his tone turned violent and paranoid. According to The Guardian, on the night of August 9, 1969, Linda and three other members of the Manson Family – Tex Watson, Susan Atkins and Patricia “Katie” Krenwinkel – were sent by Manson to break into Hollywood actress Sharon Tate’s home at 10050 Cielo Drive.

Tate was reportedly eight months pregnant and married to film director Roman Polanski at the time. Polanski was in Europe, but Tate was entertaining her friends Wojtek Frykowski, Abigail Folger and Jay Sebring that night. In an interview for the docu-drama “Manson,” Linda described how Tate begged for the life of her unborn child. However, the killers tied up Sharon and her friends and stabbed them to death. Tate was stabbed 16 times. Kasabian acted as a look-out.

“I saw a woman in a white dress and she had blood all over her and she was screaming and she was calling for her mom. I saw Katie stabbing her,” says Kasabian told The Guardian in 2009. “I thought about going to a house where there were lights down the road and then I said, ‘No, don’t do that, because they’ll find me and kill all those people’. So I went down the hill and I got into the car and I just stayed there and waited.”

According to her bio, the Mason Family ranch was raided in October 1969. Linda turned herself in two months later. In return for her testimony, which was the key to a guilty finding for Mason and his followers, Linda was granted immunity.

Manson was ultimately charged with for the murders of nine people, thanks to Linda. Vincent Bugliosi, the prosecutor at the trial, said the verdict was almost entirely thanks to her.

“She never asked for immunity from prosecution, but we gave it,” Bugliosi told The Guardian. “She stood in the witness box for 17 or 18 days and never broke down, despite the incredible pressure she was under. I doubt we would have convicted Manson without her.”

After the trial, Kasabian moved to New Hampshire to live with her mother, according to her bio. However, she was overwhelmed with media attention and decided to change her name and move west. Kasabian remained in hiding until a documentary film crew found her living in near poverty at a trailer park in 2009.

Nick Godwin, the Cineflix executive producer responsible for making “Manson,” spent months tracking Linda down and establishing a rapport with her. According to IMDb, the TV movie “follows Charles Manson’s ‘Family’ member Linda Kasabian, and her story to what when on at Spahn’s Movie Ranch and the final days leading up to the grisly 1969 Tate/La Bianca murders.”

Kasabian appears in the docu-drama, telling her story in complete detail for the first time. While her image is slightly obscured to protect her identity, Linda recounts the four weeks she spent with the Manson “family.”

Sports: Portugal into U19 Euro semi-finals after topping Group A

PortuGoal, Portugal
Portugal into U19 Euro semi-finals after topping Group A

Portugal predictably punished a poor Armenia side 4-0 at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium in Yerevan to advance to the UEFA U19 European Championship semi-finals. The host nation were no match for the defending champions, Vitor Ferreira’s first half penalty putting Portugal 1-0 up at half-time, João Mário scoring a stunner and substitute Tiago Gouveia bagging a brace in a result that was never in doubt.

Manager Filipe Ramos made one change to the side that drew 1-1 with Spain, Tiago Lopes on the bench with Costinha starting at right back which saw Tomas Tavares switch to left back.

Portugal started on the front foot with Fabio Vieira close to winning a penalty and Tiago Rodrigues heading Tomas Tavares’ cross just wide. Armenia were sitting deep and inviting pressure, Costinha taking advantage of his first start in the competition by beating two players and crossing to Vitor Ferreira who shot over the bar.

Costinha was enjoying plenty of space, drifting infield and getting involved in attacks due to Armenia offering little attacking threat. Félix Correia shot wide but Portugal took their foot off the gas, playing pedestrian football with little investment in a high pressing line, perhaps due to the extreme heat in Armenia.

Grenik Petrosyan shot straight at Celton Biai to give Portugal’s goalkeeper something to do, but the defending champions immediately resumed the monopolisation of the ball in Armenia's half. Costinha’s cross saw Tiago Rodrigues produce a weak header, Fabio Vieira’s free kick going very close to Diogo Machado who couldn’t get his head on the ball.

Armenia’s attempts to play the ball out from the back were non-existent, the very definition of amateur football and from another wayward goal kick Correia saw a shot deflected over the bar. Armenia goalkeeper Harutyun Melkonyan was insistent on giving the ball straight to Portugal and the hosts eventually paid the price.

Fabio Vieira was clumsily taken down by Narek Alaverdyan on the edge of the box, referee Nikola Dabanović pointing to the spot and Vitor Ferreira sending Melkonyan the wrong way for a belated yet deserved lead. Aremia had their best chance of the game not long after, Petrosyan squeezing the ball through to Rafik Misakyan who shot way too close to Baia.

Tiago Rodrigues’ shot from distance forced a save from Melkonyan before a Portugal fast break just before half time went begging. Fábio Vieira broke clear and found Félix Correia, the winger releasing João Mário who decided to square instead of shoot on his right foot.

The second half saw Portugal play with an intensity that was lacking in the opening period and it paid immediate dividends. Corriea drew a foul that resulted in a clever free kick, Vitor Ferreira feeding Fábio Vieira who shot over from a tight angle.

Armenia’s goal kick attempts went from the ridiculous to the absurd, completely clueless and it was no surprise when Portugal went 2-0 up. Vitor Ferreira’s shot was blocked but fell straight to João Mário, the winger taking a touch and curling a right footed effort into the far corner.

It was only a matter of how many Portugal would score now with Armenia praying for the final whistle. Diogo Capitão’s long ball saw Félix Correia sneak in behind the defence but his shot went wide. Did I mention Armenia’s attempts to play it out from the back?

They fearlessly and foolishly persisted with this pointless play, Tiago Rodrigues stealing the ball on the edge of the area and shooting wide when a cross was on. Armenia had almost given up by the time Fábio Vieira went down in the box but no penalty was forthcoming.

Vitor Ferreira saw a shot blocked, Costinha headed over from close range and João Mário shot wide after a fast break before Felipe Ramos made his first two substitutions. Fábio Vieira and Félix Correia made way for Rodrigo Fernandes and Tiago Gouveia and minutes later both players were involved in Portugal's third goal.

João Mário played a neat 1-2 with Fernandes, Mário crossing for Gouveia who headed home with Armenia’s defence looking for answers. Tiago Lopes  replaced Tomas Tavares in the 69th minute but the contest was over and Portugal had little reason to extend themselves.

João Mário released Tiago Lopes with his cross going unanswered, Mário then providing for Tiago Rodrigues who couldn’t get a shot away. Mário went himself with a curling effort just wide, Portugal’s final two substitutions seeing Gonçalo Loureiro and Celton Biai make way for Levi Faustino and Francisco Meixedo.

There was still time for Gouveia to make it 4-0 with a great strike in the 88th minute. The Benfica winger picked the ball up outside the area, made space and smashed the ball into the top corner.

Portugal’s 4-0 victory and Spain’s 2-1 win against Italy means the Seleção finished top of Group A with a superior goal difference than their Iberian neighbours. Portugal will now avoid France and face Norway, Republic of Ireland or Czech Republic in the semi-finals on Wednesday.

Manager Felipe Ramos has largely stuck with the same starting side in Portugal’s three group games. Striker Tiago Rodrigues replaced Gonçalo Ramos who hasn't been seen since the opening 3-0 win against Italy, right-back Costinha coming in for Tiago Lopes against Armenia and having a strong game.

Tiago Gouveia scored two goals off the bench to push for a starting spot, but that will surely only come if Tiago Rodrigues is benched and Félix Correia moves to a central attacking position.

Felipe Ramos found joy switching the wings of João Mário and Félix Correia in the opening two games, but we didn’t see that tactic used against Armenia. Mário spurned an opportunity to shoot with his right foot in the first half against Armenia, but then produced a stunner with his right foot when he was positioned on the left side.

The Porto UEFA Youth League winning winger overcame a forgettable first half to be man of the match. Mário seems to get better as games progress and has shown himself to be one of Portugal’s star players at the UEFA U19 European Championship alongside Gonçalo Cardoso, Fabio Vieira and Félix Correia.

Celton Biai (SL Benfica) – Costinha (Rio Ave FC), Gonçalo Loureiro (SL Benfica), Gonçalo Cardoso (Boavista FC), Tomás Tavares (SL Benfica) – Fábio Vieira (FC Porto), Diogo Capitão (SL Benfica), Vítor Ferreira (FC Porto) – João Mário (FC Porto), Tiago Rodrigues (Sporting CP), Félix Correia (Sporting CP).

Turkey and Japan share similar cultural values such as hard work, courage, discipline, despite differences in language and distances spanning thousands of miles, the Turkish president said on Monday.

Speaking at a lunch gathering hosted by the head of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party, Toshihiro Nikai, in the Japanese capital of Tokyo, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said more than 170,000 Japanese people visited the "Treasures and Tradition of 'Lale' [Tulip] in the Ottoman Empire" exhibition.

Erdogan also said a photo exhibition featuring the works of renowned Turkish-Armenian photographer Ara Guler at the 800-year-old Tofukuji Temple in Kyoto would receive the same interest from Japanese people.

"We hope to introduce Turkey's rich cultural heritage to our Japanese friends with the programs we will organize throughout the year," Erdogan said.

Erdogan also emphasized the potential for cooperation not only in the political and economic fields but also in culture and science.

"One of the most critical projects between Turkey and Japan is the Turkish-Japanese University of Science and Technology, planned to be established in Istanbul. We are working to open this university in a short time," Erdogan said.

Erdogan also received Oshima Tadamori, Speaker of the House of Representatives, at the Japanese parliament.

"Japan has a special place in the hearts of the Turkish people. In 2013, we crowned our friendship with a strategic partnership. I believe that parliamentary diplomacy plays an important role in the development of cooperation between countries," Erdogan said in the meeting.

Yerevan Slams Baku for ‘Damaging’ Statements

Azerbaijan’s foreign minister Elmar Mammadyarov

Azerbaijan Again Skips another OSCE Monitoring of Frontlines
Armenia’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday slammed Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov for making what it called “damaging” statements, when he remarked last week in Washington that shootings along the Artsakh-Azerbaijan border should not become an obstacle to substantive talks for the resolution of the Karabakh conflict. Thus far, the incidents on the line of contact have always been spurred by Azerbaijan.

The Armenian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Anna Naghdalyan said Wednesday that during last week’s talks in Washington, Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan and Mammdyarov discussed steps that can be taken to stabilize the situation along the border that is aggravated because of Azerbaijan’s actions. Naghdalyan also added that the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs called for the sides to take immediate steps to restore a conducive atmosphere to establish peace and preserve the cease-fire, and made clear proposals regarding humanitarian sphere and risk reduction.

“The disinformation by Azerbaijan on issues beyond the discussed frameworks suggests that Azerbaijan does not intend to implement these proposals and the calls by the co-chairs. Moreover, the allegations that the negotiations can be successfully conducted under conditions of regular violation of the cease-fire regime cause significant damage to the negotiations and are disrupting the peace process,” said Naghdalyan.

“The claims by the Azerbaijani foreign minister do not correspond to the truth. This is an unconstructive approach which devalues the seriousness of the peace process,” added Naghdalyan.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan on Wednesday, once again, skipped a scheduled ceasefire monitoring mission of the OSCE, making the third consecutive instance that Azerbaijan fails to lead the monitoring from its side of the border.

According the Artsakh Foreign Ministry, the OSCE monitoring was completed based on the intended schedule.
