Olympic medallists were among weightlifters from seven countries who competed at – but not in – the USA National Championships in Las Vegas.

In a landmark event on the weightlifting calendar, the inaugural USA Weightlifting (USAW) Friendship Cup, international mixed gender teams of two performed alongside Americans who were competing in their own competition.

The format was devised by Ursula Papandrea, USAW's general secretary who was recently elected first vice-president of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).

The Friendship Cup was not an IWF-sanctioned event but mixed gender competitions and new formats have been discussed within the weightlifting community in recent months and its status could change before the 2023 version is held, possibly at The Arnold strength sports festival.

Papandrea, who will attend her first IWF Board meeting in her new role this week, said: "At a time when the weightlifting community seems quite fractured, I hope the Friendship Cup highlights the similarities between athletes as opposed to their differences.

"The intent is to bring a sense of unity among athletes, who are the potential leaders of tomorrow.

"There should be a bond between all weightlifters that outweighs any of our differences."

The winners were Sara Samir (who competes as Sara Ahmed) from Egypt and Andranik Karapetyan of Armenia.

Another Armenian, the super-heavyweight Gor Minasyan, paired with the American Madeline Staniszewski – in her first international competition – for second place, and the third place went to Maddison Pannell of the host nation and Joshua Uikilifi of Tonga.

Friendship Cup athletes lifted in their respective bodyweight sessions of the US Championships, and their team score was achieved by combining their Sinclair points totals – a global measure of performance across all weight categories.

The 16 athletes, drawn into eight mixed teams, came from seven countries in four continents.

The field included four Olympians, four world medallists and medallists from the African, European, Oceania and Pan American Championships.

Armenia sent five men to the Friendship Cup, while the US entered four women.

Egypt and Tonga each fielded two athletes while Botswana, Kenya and Uganda had one each.

All four of the American women who took part in the Friendship Cup also won medals in the National Championships – the 55kg national champion Pannell, 87kg gold medallist Laura Alexander, 64kg clean & jerk silver medallist Maddie Staniszewski and 76kg snatch silver medallist Allee Tallman.

Kuinini Manumua, a 2020 Olympian for Tonga who holds dual citizenship, won the women’s +87kg title at the National U-25 Championships and placed fourth in the Friendship Cup with the Armenian Samvel Gasparyan, the 2021 European champion at 102kg.

It was a rare appearance on the platform by Samir, who became the first woman from the Arab world to win a weightlifting medal at the Olympic Games in 2016 and is one of Egypt’s top female sports stars.

She has not competed since August 2019 in an IWF event.

Egypt was banned from international competition for two years in 2019 because of a doping scandal in 2016, in which Samir was not involved.

Samir was then one of six Egyptian athletes who tested positive for a stimulant at the African Games in Morocco in 2019.

She and the others agreed to serve a two-year suspension that expired in January this year.

Because the substances detected were not steroids, the standard length of ban was halved.

In videos posted on social media in March, Samir showed herself lifting 150kg in the 76kg category, which would have won her the gold medal in clean and jerk in three weight classes – 76kg, 81kg and 87kg – at the 2021 IWF World Championships.

In Las Vegas, where the competition ended on Sunday, Samir weighed in at 80kg and made 110-147-257, earning the top female Sinclair score of 297.

The best men’s performance was from the super-heavyweight Varazdat Lalayan of Armenia, who made 201-220-421 for 424 Sinclair points.

Meanwhile, another big star of Egyptian weightlifting, the 2016 Olympic medallist Mohamed Ehab, has announced his retirement.

He is expected to go into coaching and has been appointed to a development role by the Egyptian Sports Ministry.

GOLDEN APRICOT 2022

“The process of building up new Armenian cinema is long-term and is now still at the fermentation stage”

by Mariana Hristova

08/07/2022 - Returning to its original dates in July, Armenia’s major film event places an emphasis on regional cinema, as confirmed by its artistic director

After being affected by the pandemic and the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, the Golden Apricot International Film Festival (taking place from 10-17 July) is back in shape for its 19th edition with an excellent international programme, a stronger accent on the Regional competition, and an exciting line-up in its GAIFF Pro sidebarKaren Avetisyan elaborates on this year’s achievements and shares his thoughts on the slow process of constructing the new Armenian cinema, as well as on the boycott call for Russian films.

Cineuropa: The festival severely suffered from the pandemic and the latest conflicts, and the festival dates were disrupted. Considering this, as well as the fact that you had less than a year to prepare the 2022 edition, did you manage to get it back to its original shape?
Karen Avetisyan:
In 2020, the festival was held in parallel with the War in Artsakh, which was kind of a small victory. If war as a phenomenon itself is a defeat, culture is surely capable of victories, particularly in cases when those victories’ aims were to stand for culture. So, I think the 2020 edition was the smallest but the most existential one. In 2021, in post-war and pandemic conditions, we were able to present a complete programme, hosting filmmakers such as Paul SchraderNadav Lapid, and Kornél Mundruczó, while this year we want to finally try to soar, even though the evil of war never seems to end, only to migrate from one region to another.

We are heartily ready to welcome an exciting edition, shared with diverse artists such as the legendary Costa-Gavras, whose Z (1969) must be watched today as nothing but the oracle's prophecy. We will also welcome the brilliant experimenter Albert Serra, the multi-regional master of political conflicts Terry George, the anthropologist of the homo-soveticus Ilya Khrzhanovsky, and Philip Bober who is a producer but I consciously call him a great artist, too. He will introduce Triangle of Sadness [+] less than two months after it won the Palme d'Or in Cannes, while Costa-Gavras will be our Guest of Honor a month before he receives a lifetime achievement award in Locarno on the occasion of his 90th birthday.

Last year, no Armenian feature films were included in the programme. What was the reason for that, and what is the situation now?
In 2021, we were negotiating with a couple of Armenian features to be part of the Regional Competition. There were films that refused and even got offended, thinking that the programme was of secondary importance, though we consider it similar to Cannes’ Un Certain Regard or Karlovy Vary’s Proxima sections. But we probably hadn't managed to give that programme the consistent and deserved emphasis it needed at that time. This year, we are strengthening it even more, trying to prove to ourselves and to the filmmakers that it is of primary importance to us and that it can really be far-reaching.

We strive for a regional focus at least as much as an international one, if not more. One of the common problems of many festivals of the "second echelon" is the unjustifiable ambition to be labeled as "international", but in fact, a regional focus can bring more weighty dividends and deeper prospects. Also, being regionally oriented does not preclude being international.

However, the filter for the Armenian full-length films is more demanding than for the short ones. We are trying to promote them but not at the expense of quality. So, this year we are happy to have three full-length films, two of them in the regional competition and one in the international. 5 Dreamers and a Horse [+] joins the programme after Visions du Réel, HotDocs, and Wiesbaden; Aurora's Sunrise [+] after Annecy, but that does not bother us as we all have a common goal: the international recognition of Armenian films.

On the other hand, the Armenian shorts in the Apricot Stone competition were of high quality in 2021, so I have high expectations for this year as well. Could you maybe disclose details regarding your selection criteria, as well as your overall impressions of the upcoming generation in Armenian cinema?
For the Armenian shorts, we consciously do not set a very high, insurmountable bar, believing that short cinema accepts a certain tolerance, backlash оr space for encouragement. I am not sure that this year's selection is much stronger than the previous one. In fact, we are looking at this development in the timeframe of several more years. This year's selection clearly proves that the process of building up the new Armenian cinema is long-term and is now still in the fermentation stage. Creating a new cinema movement or style is a complex process depending on various factors, and having just "good films" is only one of those factors. Now we're at the stage where we have good films, but there is not yet a recognisable tendency in our national filmmaking. I hope we're at least on the right path.

Is the GAIFF Pro industry sidebar contributing to the process?
Definitely, as it runs industrial and educational functions in parallel, which are indispensable. In order to develop the educational block, we also plan to launch an international school, which will be based on the concept of the Moscow School of New Cinema founded by the brilliant Georgian mentor and filmmaker Dmitry Mamuliya. Their best graduation films have appeared in the programmes of international festivals many times. As he says, every country has its own "demons of cinema", the search for which forms and creates a new cinema.

What is your opinion regarding the call for boycotting Russian cinema? Is the festival’s policy in line with the tendency?
The tendency has become so radical that we do not want to be part of it. We believe that a total cancel culture means ignoring the obvious lessons from history, as well as burning Leon Feuchtwanger's or Heinrich Mann's books with our own hands. Absolutely the same thing, just in a different period and historical-political context.

In a couple of days, we are going to show a film with the title Z, as well as the Russian productions DAUDegeneration [+]Captain Volkonogov Escaped [+] and Tchaikovsky's Wife [+], which could be found to be unethical gestures but we cannot feel accountable. We believe that we ought not to be book burners, but fire-extinguishers.

Tigran Avinyan: Some are preparing for snap Yerevan elections for reasons incomprehensible to me

NEWS.am
Armenia – July 8 2022

For reasons incomprehensible to me, several people and mass media are intensively preparing for snap elections of the Yerevan Council of Elders. Tigran Avinyan, a board member of the ruling Civil Contract Party and former Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia, wrote this on Facebook.

"And in that context, they have come out to an undeclared ‘war’ by weaving and disseminating fabrications and manipulations on an almost daily basis, with or without a reason.

In a more active political period, I intend to reflect on some matters thoroughly, so that the manipulation does not become the truth by constantly repeating [it]. But until then, I want to recall that the next [regular] elections of the Yerevan Council of Elders are in the fall of 2023," Avinyan added.

Turkish press: Iran says ‘misunderstandings’ with Azerbaijan cleared

Syed Zafar Mehdi   |04.07.2022

TEHRAN, Iran

Iran and Azerbaijan said Monday they are on course to accelerate their bilateral relations after overcoming their “misunderstandings.”

The announcement was made by Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian during a joint presser with his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov in Tehran.

The top Iranian diplomat said the presidents of Iran and Azerbaijan have met twice in the past ten months, more recently on the sidelines of the Caspian Sea littoral states summit in Turkmenistan, describing the talks between them as "constructive" and "forward-looking."

In Monday's meeting, Amir-Abdollahian said the issue of territorial integrity of countries, including Azerbaijan, was emphasized.

He said Tehran reiterates its support for the "peaceful settlement" of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the Karabakh region based on the "principles of international law.”

Karabakh was liberated from the Armenian occupation after almost three decades last year, but Armenia has continued to make territorial claims on the region.

Amir-Abdollahian reaffirmed Iran's readiness to help resolve the dispute between the two neighboring states through dialogue "based on respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty of the two parties."

The Iranian minister also backed regional formats, saying he agreed during a recent visit to Ankara that a tripartite meeting between Iran, Türkiye, and Azerbaijan at the level of foreign ministers will be held in Tehran, besides an expert-level meeting in the 3+3 format.

The dates of the two summits, as well as Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's planned visit to Tehran, are expected to be decided during Bayramov's stay in Tehran.

The two sides, Amir-Abdollahian said, also discussed bilateral economic ties, describing energy and transit as "two key areas of cooperation" between Tehran and Baku, and announcing that Iran's oil minister will be visiting Baku this week.

The issue of pollution of rivers in Iran's northeastern provinces bordering Azerbaijan also figured in their discussions, with both sides pledging to resolve the issue at the level of experts.

Bayramov, in his remarks, said relations between the two sides are based on "cultural commonalities,” stressing that meetings between Aliyev and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi have paved the way for the expansion of Tehran-Baku ties.

He said the two sides discussed expanded economic cooperation, stressing the importance of the North-South corridor as well as the Persian Gulf-Black Sea corridor.

The top Azerbaijani diplomat said his country seeks normalization of ties with Armenia and has taken steps in that direction by submitting a five-point peace plan as well as proposals of transit between the two countries.

Bayramov said the reconstruction of liberated lands in Karabakh was Baku's "top priority,” announcing that Iranian companies will be undertaking reconstruction work of a hospital and a school in the region.

He further said that his government supports Iran's position on regional formats, including the 3+3 format.

The problems of all large cities are almost the same, and in the stage of upcoming reforms we are ready to be useful to friendly Yerevan by sharing our successful experience”, the Mayor of Lyon said.

Turkey and Azerbaijan don`t leave attempts to get a corridor through Syunik

ARMINFO
Armenia –
Marianna Mkrtchyan

ArmInfo.Turkey supports the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. This was stated by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu at a press  conference after the first trilateral meeting of the ministers of  foreign affairs and transport of Azerbaijan, Turkey and Kazakhstan.   At the same time, he added that they expect the opening of the  "Zangezur corridor" (through the Syunik region of the Republic of  Armenia, ed. note), which will provide communication with the western  regions of Azerbaijan, in the shortest possible time.

According to him, the opening of communication through the Syunik  region is very important from the point of view of the development of  the countries of the region. Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun  Bayramov also stated this.

It should be noted that within the framework of the first trilateral  meeting of the ministers of foreign affairs and transport of  Azerbaijan, Turkey and Kazakhstan in Baku, the Baku Declaration was  signed.

According to the Baku Declaration, the ministers stressed the need  for the full operation of the proposed new corridors. "Ministers  expressed the need for the full exploitation of the newly proposed  corridors, which will strengthen ties in the region, including the  establishment of rail and road corridors, stated in the tripartite  statements of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia dated November 9/10,  2020 and January 11, 2021. Ministers stated the importance of  development corridor linking Eastern Zangezur and the Nakhichevan  Autonomous Republic as a promising part of the Middle Corridor," the  document cited by the Azerbaijani media says.

It should be noted that on January 11, talks between the leaders of  Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia Vladimir Putin, Ilham Aliyev and Nikol  Pashinyan were held in Moscow. After the talks, the Russian leader  announced the establishment of a working group, which will be headed  by the vice-premiers of the three countries. The group deals with  issues of unblocking economic, trade and transport links in the  region, opening borders. On June 3, the 10th meeting of the  trilateral working group under the joint chairmanship of the Deputy  Prime Ministers of Armenia – Mher Grigoryan, Russia – Alexei Overchuk  and Azerbaijan – Shahin Mustafayev was held. "Armenia, Russia and  Azerbaijan have brought their positions closer on border and other  types of control, as well as on the safe passage of citizens,  vehicles and goods on roads and railways through the territories of  Armenia and Azerbaijan. The vice-premiers discussed possible routes  for the passage of the highway, which provides transport links  between the western regions of Azerbaijan and Nakhichevan through the  territory of Armenia. The parties will continue to work on the  implementation of the agreements between the leaders of Russia,  Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding the unblocking of transport links in  the region."

It is noteworthy that Turkey and Azerbaijan are trying to get a  corridor road through the territory of Armenia. Meanwhile, official  Yerevan has repeatedly stated that there can be no talk of a road  "with corridor logic", this position was supported by Russia, which  noted that the communication would function under Armenian  sovereignty.

Armenia, Azerbaijan trade new Karabakh accusations

The National Post

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan traded new accusations on Monday with the president of Azerbaijan, saying his neighbor was failing to take action on a treaty to end 30 years of hostility over Nagorno-Karabakh.

The dispute over the region, a mountainous territory inside Azerbaijan controlled since the 1990s by ethnic Armenians, flared in 2020 into a six-week war in which Azeri troops regained swathes of territory. The two sides agreed to work on a peace plan after Russia brokered a ceasefire.

Pashinyan, quoted by Russian and Armenian news media, said Azerbaijan was politicizing peace efforts, including the issue of building a rail link through Armenia between Azerbaijan and its western enclave of Nakhichivan.

The target of large protests in recent weeks accusing him of making too many concessions on Karabakh, Pashinyan also said more than 50 Armenian servicemen faced treason charges.

While Pashinyan and Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev have held a series of meetings in the past 18 months, progress towards a peace treaty has been slow.

“Azerbaijan refuses to talk, publicly accusing Armenia of refusing to talk,” Armenia’s Armenpress news agency quoted Pashinyan as telling an online news conference. “My assessment is one: it is done to legitimize a new war against Armenia.”

On the allegations against Armenian officers, Russia’s TASS news agency said Pashinyan told reporters that “a great many affairs are now happening behind closed doors and the public is unaware of them … More than 50 serviceman are accused of espionage and treason.”

The TASS account gave no further details.

Aliyev last week accused Armenia of inaction on the treaty.

Armenia was failing to abide by its “legal obligations” to allow free access for construction of the rail line, Azerbaijani media quoted him as saying after talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Pashinyan said Aliyev was blocking progress on the issue by linking it to the return to Armenia of prisoners of war. (Reporting in Winnipeg by Ronald Popeski; editing by Richard Pullin)
