Azerbaijan canceled meeting with Armenia, Pashinyan says

PanARMENIAN
Armenia –

PanARMENIAN.Net - Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said that Azerbaijan has canceled a meeting between Secretary of Armenia's Security Council Armen Grigoryan and Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev.

Pashinyan told an online press conference on Monday, June 27 that the meeting was supposed to be held in Brussels.

According to him, Yerevan has also proposed a meeting between the Foreign Ministers but no response has been received from Baku so far. Pashinyan said Azerbaijan's claims that Armenia is allegedly delaying negotiations on a peace treaty are "strange".

Following Pashinyan's remarks, media reports from Azerbaijan cited a diplomatic source as saying that the meeting in Brussels did not take place because there were "real reasons" for that.

"If the Armenian side makes contradictory statements every day, continues to talk about the mechanism of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmanship, and makes territorial claims against Azerbaijan, then what is the point of holding meetings?" the source reportedly said.

CivilNet: Pashinyan’s comments on Lachin corridor refocus attention on residents’ future

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan confirmed at a press conference Monday that “in case of a change” in the route of the Lachin corridor, some Armenian communities there “will pass to Azerbaijan’s control,” refocusing attention on the still-unclear future for the region’s residents.

However, he refused to go into any detail about what the handover will mean in practice, only saying that the “problems…will be solved with the help of the Artsakh (Karabakh) government.”

The Lachin corridor is a strategically important strip of land surrounding a road patrolled by Russian peacekeepers that, at present, connects Armenia with the part of Karabakh remaining under Armenian control.

The corridor begins at the Armenian border village of Tegh and then, after crossing into Karabakh, winds through the village of Aghavno and the town of Lachin, also known as Berdzor. After that, the road heads north through the village of Lisagor on to Shushi, the largest city captured by Azerbaijani forces in the 2020 Karabakh war, before finally reaching Stepanakert, the region’s capital.

As a result of territorial gains made by Azerbaijan in the war, the Lachin corridor has become the only overland connection between Armenia and Karabakh. The villages and towns along the other roads between Armenia and Karabakh were handed over to Azerbaijan after the war.

The ceasefire declaration that ended the war stipulates that a new road should be built that also connects Armenia and Karabakh, but that bypasses the Armenian communities that remain within the Lachin corridor. Those include the villages of Aghavno, Nerkin Sus, and Sus, as well as the town of Lachin.

Once that alternative route is completed, Azerbaijan is meant to take control of those communities, and Russian peacekeepers are supposed to relocate to the new route.

The new road is set to start in the Armenian border village of Kornidzor and then will head through the Karabakh villages of Hin Shen and Mets Shen. After that, the new route will link up with the portion of the old road running through Lisagor to Shushi and, beyond that, to Stepanakert.

The ceasefire calls for “a plan for the construction” of the new road to “be determined within the next three years,” without specifying which side should take on the responsibility and cost of building it.

But as officials in Yerevan and Stepanakert have largely kept up their silence on the issue, Baku has taken the lead on the project, with Azerbaijani construction crews making significant progress building the section of the route that lies in Karabakh.

In fact, the head of Azerbaijan’s roads agency said earlier this year he expects the new route to be ready by the end of next month, well ahead of the three-year timeline set in the ceasefire.

In contrast, work on the part of the new road that will lie in Armenia has yet to begin.

All that has put the remaining Armenian residents of the Lachin corridor on a collision course with the geopolitical reality that Azerbaijan may soon take control of their communities.

In the immediate aftermath of the 2020 war, CivilNet reporters visited Aghavno, one of the villages that may soon be handed over to Azerbaijan. Residents there largely struck a defiant note, pledging to stay.

“We are not betraying (our lands). We are not abandoning our homes. We have nowhere else to go,” said resident Narine Rasoyan, giving what was then a more or less typical point of view.

A journalist with Eurasianet who traveled to the village earlier this month found more mixed emotions about the prospect of a handover, but many residents still said they would refuse to leave.

CivilNet’s team, meanwhile, paid a visit a few weeks ago to Hin Shen, where Azerbaijani construction crews have already begun building a section of the new road. Residents there spoke of their anxiety living in such close proximity to Azerbaijani workers.

“No matter how much we try to dispel people’s fears, all this (construction) has a negative impact on them,” said Karen Barseghyan, the head of the village school.

Tigran Grigoryan, a well-known Karabakh analyst, called for a more sober view on the Lachin corridor issue in an interview with CivilNet shortly after Pashinyan’s press conference, saying that “at this stage, we should understand we cannot prevent that (handover) agreement.”

“Since the war, Yerevan and Stepanakert have not had the opportunity to prevent the handover of those communities to Azerbaijan,” he noted. “The reasons are evident: the army was crushed after the war, (and) the Russians had the perception that those settlements should be handed over.”

David Hotson & Fiandre Architectural surfaces reinterpret Armenian church

June 20 2022

New meets old as award-winning New York architect David Hotson reinterprets 1,400 year-old armenian prototype for the Saint Sarkis Church in Carrollton, Texas. The 2022 addition looks forward as well as backward, marrying ancient architectural and artistic traditions with contemporary digitally-driven design and fabricating technologies, evident more profoundly on the western side. In collaboration with Italian Architectural Surfaces manufacturer Fiandre, part of Iris Ceramica Group, a striking façade dissolves 1.5 million unique pixels each representing the victims of the 1915 Armenian genocide.

Architect David Hotson collaborates with Fiandre part of Iris Ceramica Group to memorialize the victims of the Armenian Genocide. Working with long-time collaborator Stepan Terzyan, Hotson modeled the design on the ancient church of Saint Hripsime (618 AD), which still stands near Armenia’s modern capital of Yerevan. Saint Sarkis was laid exactly fourteen centuries later in 2018, and its connection to the ancient prototype provides a link to Armenia’s legacy as the world’s first Christian nation.

It goes without saying that the most striking of these contemporary innovations is the west façade of the church, composed of interwoven botanical motifs drawn from Armenian art. As a visitor approaches, 1.5 million tiny pixels begin to dissolve. All were generated by a computer script that makes each one unique accurately representing the individuals who perished in the country’s genocide in 1915, including family members of the Saint Sarkis congregation as well. The individual icons spreading across the entire surface provides a visceral encounter with the scale of the historical atrocity, essentially serving as a subtle but powerful memorial.

To implement the façade, David Hotson partnered closely with Fiandre. The manufacturing brand’s Design Your Slabs system allows exterior grade, UV-resistant custom printing at extremely fine resolution on large-format porcelain rain screen panel materials. The Italian-fabricated façade is the first use of this exterior grade high-resolution digital printing technology to optically engage the viewer in a series of visual scales nested inside each other. Graniti Vicentia Façades installed and utilized the proprietary ventilated system of Granitech – the division of Iris Ceramica Group dedicated to Ventilated Façade Systems.

In addition to the memorial façade, Fiandre supplied the full range of porcelain interior and exterior floor, wall and soffit finishes used throughout the Saint Sarkis Campus. The solid gray mass of the church exterior, rendered in modern materials, references the monolithic sculptural character of ancient Armenian churches which were constructed entirely of stone. The juxtaposition of the monochrome architecture against the rich multicolored vegetation, envisioned and implemented by landscape designer Zepur Ohanian, recreates the powerful relationship between monolithic architecture and verdant landscape that is typical of the ancient churches and monastery complexes that still survive throughout the Armenian homeland.

Sports: Tsarukyan Explains Why He’s The Best Lightweight, Not Makhachev

June 23 2022

Rising UFC lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan believes he has every attribute needed to sit above Islam Makhachev as the promotion’s best 155lber.

While Charles Oliveira most recently sat on the throne and was only unseated by a weight-miss prior to UFC 274, many have named surging contender Makhachev as the best fighter in the division, including the Dagestani’s mentor and former dominant champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The sentiment is shared by the man himself, who’s made it clear that he’s willing to “smash” any and all opposition on his way to the top, where he believes he is destined to make his way to.

But while Makhachev could well have the opportunity to ascend the lightweight mountain next time out, one man outside the top 10 believes his skills inside the Octagon are ahead of the #4-ranked contender’s.

Tsarukyan, who sits at #11 on the lightweight ladder, has been making a splash in his recent fights. After finishing Christos Giagos last September, the Russian-Armenian firmly established his name as a potential future champion when he battered Joel Álvarez on the main card of UFC Fight Night: Makhachev vs. Green earlier this year.

The only blemish on Tsarukyan’s 5-1 UFC record? A debut loss to Makhachev.

But despite falling to the Dagestani on the scorecards back in 2019, Tsarukyan believes his game has developed leaps and bounds since, even to the point where he’s confident in staking his claim as the UFC’s best lightweight.

“I feel I am the best in this division. I’m the youngest fighter, I’m in top 15,” Tsarukyan noted during an interview with ESPN MMA’s Brett Okamoto. “Yeah, we have big names in this division, but for me, it doesn’t matter. I know I can beat everybody there, like (Dustin) Poirier or (Justin) Gaethje or Conor (McGregor).”

While Oliveira’s resurgence and championship success has been impressive, many expect Makhachev to get the better of him when they collide, perhaps later this year for the vacant gold.

But although the AKA product’s 10-fight win streak and work with Khabib has left him at the top of many’s 155-pound order, Tsarukyan thinks he has the edge, something he’s hoping to show in a rematch with Makhachev soon enough.

“I don’t think he is the best lightweight. I know I am the best lightweight. I am the youngest and my skills is better, you know, my boxing, my striking,” suggested Tsarukyan. “I didn’t have enough experience when I fought him, I know that, for sure. It was my first fight… I know me, I train very hard and I improve my skills every day. I’m learning every day… I feel like I’m the best in the division.

“If I fight with Islam Makhachev (again), I will show you who is the best lightweight,” added Tsarukyan. “After this fight, if the UFC gives me the opportunity to fight with Islam, I will sign.”

Tsarukyan will have the chance to move closer to a second collision with Makhachev this weekend when he features in his very first UFC main event.

After a struggle to secure a higher-ranked opponent, the Russian-Armenian will meet Poland’s Mateusz Gamrot, who is ranked one place below him, in Saturday’s UFC Vegas 57 headliner.

FM: Armenia MFA needs considerable, consistent staff renewal

NEWS.am
Armenia – June 6 2022

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the entire state apparatus of Armenia need considerable and consistent staff renewal. Minister of Foreign Affairs Ararat Mirzoyan said this during Monday’s preliminary debates on the execution of the 2021 state budget, at the joint meeting of the standing committees of the National Assembly.

According to him, in 2021 there was no influx of new staff at the foreign ministry. There are several reasons: the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the situation when the MFA was without leadership for two months.

Also, Mirzoyan pointed to the further changes in the composition of the foreign ministry leadership.

"In the light of the mentioned events, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia has already held the first competition this year," the FM said.
