Army spotted a Griffon-12 drone and grounded it using special technical means, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said

BAKU, May 31. /TASS/. Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry has said an Armenian drone was intercepted on the border between the two countries.

"On the Kelbajar section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani state border the Azerbaijani army spotted a Griffon-12 drone of the Armenian army and grounded it using special technical means," the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said in a news release on Monday.

The situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in the area of the Gegharkunik and Syunik regions has remained strained since May 12. Both sides report provocations. On Thursday, Azerbaijan said it had taken prisoner six Armenian soldiers when they were trying to cross the border for committing an act of sabotage. The Armenian side confirmed the very instance of detention, but stressed that the men were conducting engineering works in a border zone of the Gegharkunik Region of Armenia.

An armed conflict erupted in the zone of the dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh in the autumn of 2020. On November 9, the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a statement that put an end to hostilities. Under the arrangement, the Azerbaijani and Armenian forces stopped at the positions they were holding at the moment. A number of districts were handed over to Baku's control. Russian peacekeepers were deployed along the engagement line and the Lachin corridor.

India Urges Calm As Armenia-Azerbaijan Tensions Flare-Up Again

The Armenian Defense Ministry reported on Thursday a warning shooting incident at the border and explained that it was due to fire from the Azerbaijani armed forces.

“On May 20, an incident was recorded at the border section of the Gegharkunik Province with the participation of Azerbaijani servicemen who entered the territory of Armenia. At about 15:00 [11:00 GMT], several dozen shots were fired, presumably into the air, after which Armenian units opened warning fire,” the statement says.

According to the ministry, the commander of the Azerbaijani military established contact with the commander of Armenian units, asked for a ceasefire and said that the shots were accidental.

“The Armenian Armed Forces warn that the repetition of such incidents will be viewed as a deliberate attempt to go to confrontation and will lead to appropriate actions of the Armenian side,” the ministry said.

Earlier, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs called for the pullback of forces from the Armenian-Azerbaijani border on Wednesday as Yerevan has accused Baku of transgression.

“We have been following, with concern, the situation along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. Border incursions through military movements can destabilize the situation and lead to renewed hostilities. We call upon the transgressing side to pull back forces immediately and cease any further provocation,” ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said in a statement.

Bagchi said India considers the peace and stability in the South Caucasus important for the entire region and stands for the political resolution of any disputes.

For the fourth day in a row, a search for a conscript is underway who disappeared from his military unit deployed near the contact line with Azerbaijani units, the Armenia General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) has reported. The private left his unit without permit, the Armenian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has suggested.

The soldier in question named Mkrtchyan has voluntarily left his military unit stationed in the vicinity of Vardenis in the Gegarkunik Region. His whereabouts is still unknown, Gor Abramyan, the head of the GPO, has stated. In particular, the version that he is on the Azerbaijani side has not been confirmed.

The military unit, from where the 18-year-old conscript has disappeared, is located on a problematic border section, where an enhanced alert regime has been introduced.

On May 14, Yerevan applied for military help to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). In its turn, Baku insists that the soldiers had not violated the border, but only clarified it and occupied the territory belonging to Azerbaijan. None of the parties is happy with a forceful solution to the issue, the experts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" believe.

Adam Schiff calls Azerbaijani actions ‘dangerous and provocative’ that could lead to further loss of life

Panorama, Armenia

Congressman Adam Schiff has expressed deep concern about recent reports that Azerbaijani troops have reportedly crossed into Armenian territory, saying this is yet another dangerous and provocative action that could lead to further loss of life.

"It is past time for the United States to recognize that our policies have emboldened Azeri President Ilham Aliyev to escalate militarily, risking another war," Schiff wrote on is Facebook page, adding: " I have been in communication with the Biden administration and urged them to engage more deeply through the Minsk Group, now more important than ever.

Schiff reminded that Azerbaijan is taking these actions just days after the State Department issued an unjustified waiver of restrictions under Section 907 against direct aid to Azerbaijan. "We should not be providing military funding to a nation that habitually engages in human rights violations and violates the sovereignty of its neighbors," said the US congressman.
