IGOR MURADYAN: ARMENIAN-TURKISH RELATIONS WILL NOT NORMALIZE IN THIS HISTORIC PERIOD

The passage of Armenian Genocide bills in the US House Foreign
Relations Committee and the Swedish Parliament cannot be viewed
separately from the current global geopolitical developments,
political scientist Igor Muradyan says. He is assured that the current
developments connected with the Armenian Genocide recognition and
the Armenian-Turkish process are a small part of the global politics.

According to the political scientist, the Armenian-Turkish process
is over, because the western power centers want so. Their purpose
is to accuse both the Armenian and Turkish parties of the failure of
the process.

Igor Muradyan considers that the Armenian authorities and diplomacy
face one important task today – not to allow Armenia be put on the
same scale with Turkey. The political scientist is assured that
Turkey’s current behavior shows that it is ready for everything –
any aggressive political statements or actions.

According to Igor Muradyan, still 1.5 years ago it was clear that
"the Armenian-Turkish relations would not be normalized in this
historic period and these attempts would lead to the aggravation of
the confrontation."

Australia Defends Cinema Moscow Open Air Hall

AUSTRALIA DEFENDS CINEMA MOSCOW OPEN AIR HALL

ArmInfo. Australia has defended the Cinema Moscow Open Air Hall.

As it was reported earlier, Internet society has already joined the
action in protection of Moscow Cinema Open Air Hall, which is to be
destroyed for construction of a church similar to the St.

Poghos-Petros Church destroyed in 30s. The government resolved to
transfer the territory of the Open Air Hall to the Mother See of Holy
Etchmiadzin. Facebook social network has responded to the news. An
open group was created at Facebook "SAVE Cinema Moscow Open-Air Hall".

Nearly 4000 people from over the world have joined it in a week. Hayas
Cultural Organization (Sydney) also responded to the SOS. ‘Hayas’
Cultural Organisation (Sydney) and the undersigned have prepared
a Petition to: President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, Prime Minister
Tigran Sargsian, Minister of Culture Hasmik Poghosian.

The petition says: "We the undersigned have come together to protest
the proposed destruction of a unique architectural monument in the
city of Yerevan – the ‘Moscow’ Cinema’s Open-Air Hall.

On February 25 2010, the Armenian Government had made certain changes
in the statutory list relating to the Cultural-Historical Monuments of
City of Yerevan. According to said changes the Open-Air Hall (1968)
of ‘Moscow’ Cinema, located on 18 Abovyan Street was removed from
the list of buildings protected by the government. This action was
taken without consulting any committee of experts and appears to be
legally questionable.

The move to ‘un-protect’ the hall was supposedly instigated by the
decision of ‘Moscow’ Cinema’s current management to transfer the deed
of ownership of the Open-Air Hall to the Holy Mother See of Ejmiatsin,
which plans to demolish said Hall for the purpose of re-building the
18th century Peter-Paul Basilica that once stood on this territory.

The Soviet authorities tragically destroyed the church in 1930s with
the purpose of building the ‘Moscow’ cinema.

In 1960s architects Spartak Knteghtsian and Telman Gevorgian built the
Open-Air Hall in the backyard of the ‘Moscow’ Cinema and the entire
complex was soon hailed internationally as an exceptional model of
urban planning and a successful example of architectural modernism.

Its historic and cultural value for the city of Yerevan is paramount
since very few masterpieces of modernist architecture were actually
build here. Also, with only two working cinemas in Yerevan, every
cinema screen – especially one that can accommodate over 900 people
and serve a variety of cultural purposes – has an immense significance
for the people of Yerevan who are increasingly being deprived of
their heritage and viable public spaces.

While the Mother See of Ejmiatsin is justified in its desire to build
another church in the place of the lost one, doing so by demolishing a
unique architectural monument is simply irresponsible and is a blatant
repetition of the criminal ‘mistakes’ made by the Soviet Government
in the 1930s.

People in Armenia, including the Architect’s Union, numerous artists,
filmmakers, writers and intellectuals as well as thousands of
concerned Yerevan locals have come together to protest the demolition
of the Hall. We believe that the removal of the Hall from the list
of protected monuments sets a very dangerous precedent that will
unquestionably lead to more illegal and irresponsible destruction
in Yerevan and elsewhere. Unable to sign a physical petition, we,
the undersigned want to join our Armenian compatriots and express our
concern and indignation towards the continuing and senseless erasure
of Yerevan’s architectural heritage and urge you not to repeat the
glaring mistakes of past ruling parties."

A total of 900 people have already signed the Petition.

ARMENIAN PARLIAMENTARY SPEAKER: TURKISH AUTHORITIES DO NOT TAKE ARMENIAN-TURKISH NORMALIZATION SERIOUSLY

ArmInfo. The Turkish authorities do not take the Armenian-Turkish
normalization seriously, Armenian Parliamentary Speaker Hovik
Abrahamyan said in the parliament on Monday.

He called it unserious that signing the Protocols in Zurich Turkey
has repeatedly come out with contradictory statements and does not
strive to ratify the Protocols. H. Abrahamyan said that the coalition
forces represented by the Republican Party of Armenia, the Prosperous
Armenia Party and Orinats Yerkir Party have resolved to discuss the
issue of ratification of the Protocol On Establishment of Diplomatic
Relations and the Protocol On Development of Bilateral Relations only
after Turkey ratifies them.

The protocols were again put on agenda of the four-day session of
the Parliament (March 15-18). The big agenda contains 70 issues and
22 international agreements.

Gul Slams Sweden Over Armenian ‘Genocide’ Publicity

GUL SLAMS SWEDEN OVER ARMENIAN ‘GENOCIDE’ PUBLICITY

Turkish President Abdullah Gul has criticized Stockholm over a Swedish
parliament resolution that branded the World War I killing of Armenians
during the Ottoman Empire as ‘genocide.’

"The resolution on Armenian allegations which was approved by the
Swedish Parliament does not have any credibility. Those who made this
decision and voted in favor of the resolution were not historians,"
Gul said on Thursday.

Sweden’s parliament narrowly approved a resolution Thursday,
claiming that the 1915 killing of Armenians in Turkey amounted to
genocide. The resolution was passed by a very narrow margin, with 131
parliamentarians voting in favor and 130 against, with 88 abstaining
in the 349-seat assembly.

Despite Armenian claims that the killing of over a million Armenians
between 1915 and 1923 were the result of an orchestrated campaign by
Ottoman Turks, Turkish officials strongly reject the idea and the
genocide label. They insist far fewer Armenians died and that they
were killed in a civil war in which Turks also died.

Ankara points to historical evidence, ignored by Armenian lobbyists and
their Western supporters, that puts the figure of Armenian victims
at 300,000 and also makes clear that nearly as many Ottoman Turks
were killed in the civil unrest that led to the downfall of the
Ottoman Empire.

US observers have also pointed to the close association of the
influential Armenian lobby in the US with the powerful Israeli lobby in
pushing through the symbolic resolution as a general publicity campaign
against the Muslim state of Turkey, which has become one of the
leading critics of violent Israeli policies against the Palestinians.

Ankara and Yerevan signed an agreement last October to normalize
relations, but their parliaments have yet to ratify them to end a
century of hostility.

Arminfo. The principle of the right of Nagornyy Karabakh people
for self-determination – is one of the most important principles to
settle the conflict, OSCE PA Special Rapporteur on Nagornyy Karabakh
Goran Lennmarker said at the seminar "Regional Development in the
South Caucasus: Challenges, Opportunities and Prospects" opened in
Yerevan today.

He also said if not this important principle, we would not have
the independent Armenia, Georgia or Azerbaijan. He said there is
also another important principle – inviolability of borders which
should be also observed. The European diplomat said that the ways
for Karabakh conflict settlement should be found as soon as possible,
as the Armenian as well as Azerbaijani economy suffers because of it.

Moreover, one should not forget that people die the line of
contact every year. ‘The energy of the two peoples may be used more
effectively’, – he said and added that the existing settlement format
should be preserved.

STEPAN DEMIRCHIAN: DEMAND OF HOLDING SPECIAL ELECTIONS IN ARMENIA HAS MATURED

YEREVAN, MARCH 10, NOYAN TAPAN. The home political crisis has not
been overcome in Armenia from 2008 March 1 up to the present, and the
last accord of the unfairness was the trial ordered against Haykakan
Zhamanak newspaper’s editor Nikol Pashinian. Chairman of the People’s
Party of Armenia, Armenian National Congress (ANC) representative
Stepan Demirchian stated at a March 10 press conference.

According to him, there is no progress in the economic sphere, either,
people’s socio-economic condition worsens. In S. Demirchian’s words,
one of the primary problems is creation of a really independent
judicial system, and the OSCE has also touched upon it lately.

However, in his opinion, no progress can be achieved in any sphere
in Armenia unless the criminal-oligarch system is liquidated.

S. Demirchian repeated the thought voiced at the March 1 rally that
the demand of holding special state elections in Armenia has matured.

In his words, it is time to organize a fair, transparent electoral
process in Armenia.

Speaking about foreign policy the PPA Chairman mentioned that welcoming
the March 4 voting results of the U.S. House of Representativies
Committee on Foreign Affairs he considers improbable that the issue
of the Genocide will be placed on plenary session’s agenda. "Though
the U.S. Congress is an independent structure, it is not like our
National Assembly, nevertheless, it will not discuss the issue
of the Genocide," S. Demirchian predicted. The oppositionist also
expressed an opinion that after all this Turkey will not ratify the
Armenian-Turkish protocols. As to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict,
according to S. Demirchian, it will not be solved soon.

Turkish Jews say Armenian genocide resolution to damage Turkey-USA ties

Istanbul, 2 March: Istanbul’s Turkish-Jewish Community said, "If
members of the US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign
Affairs accept the resolution about the events of 1915, they will
damage Turkey-USA relations. They do not make any contribution to
Turkey-Armenia relations."

The community said in a statement, "According to our view, only
historians can resolve historical events. If the resolution is
accepted, it will damage Turkey-USA relations. The resolution will not
make any contribution to efforts to normalize Turkey-Armenia
relations."

The US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs will vote
the resolution recognizing the events of 1915 as "genocide" on 4 March

Obama asks Congress not to judge Turkey on Armenia

The Obama administration has asked the House of Representatives not to
vote on whether Turkey committed genocide against Armenians in 1915.

Armenian-Americans are disappointed in this reversal of what they say
was an Obama campaign promise. The Administration explains that this
is a matter between Turkey and Armenia. Commentators point out how
much the U.S. depends on Turkey, having the second biggest military in
NATO and therefore is a big customer of the U.S., has forces in
Afghanistan, hosts U.S. bases near Iraq, and unofficially mediates
between the U.S. and Iran (John d. McKinnon and Marc Champion, Wall
St. J., 3/6, A12).

Reality seems to be canceling quite a few campaign promises. It does
not seem fitting for the U.S. Congress to pass judgment now on what
foreigners did to each other 95 years ago. Obama has gotten the U.S.
into position to disappoint one side or the other, no matter which the
U.S. decides in favor of. U.S. prestige still is sinking, and Pres.
Bush cannot be blamed any more, try as Obama does to do so. One would
think that Congress has nothing better to do.

No matter who the mediator, Iran can not reconcile with the U.S.,
because of Iran’s expansionist religious and national ideology.
