AYF Eastern Region Members Gather in New Jersey for Annual Seminar

WATERTOWN, Mass.?On October 8, members of the Armenian Youth
Federation (AYF) Eastern Region gathered in Paramus, N.J., for the
organization’s annual Senior Seminar.

Participants from Providence, Boston, Philadelphia, Detroit, New
Jersey, New York and Washington, D.C., attended the seminar, which
included lectures on the current status of the organization; an
overview of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF); and a
discussion on what it means to be Armenian.

Lead by AYF regional advisor Zorab Khaligian from Racine, Wisc., the
group talked about the dimensions of what it means to be Armenian and
what types of activities are included in its definition. Khaligian
asked the group to put the discussion into perspective. “We have all
of this commitment, socialization, but what are we doing with it?
Going with the flow and being at events is great, but what about
taking the next step? If you remain stagnant, then there will be no
AYF,” said Khaligian.

During their on the ARF by ANC of New Jersey chairperson Ani
Tchaghlasian, the group reviewed the goals of the organization, the
goals of the AYF, and talked about the life of members who are in both
organizations.

“We have our monthly meetings to discuss chapter dynamics and the
successes or failures that occur within our own cities. It is
important for us, however, to take time out to meet with the leaders
and active members of other chapters to discuss our organization as a
whole,” said Philadelphia AYF chapter president Anglela Deese, who
attended the seminar. “This year’s event was a chance for us to
discuss those issues, such as the ways in which we can run the AYF
most efficiently and successfully. I believe that a weekend like this
helps us take ownership of the AYF; this is easy to do within our own
communities back home. But we must remember that we are part of a
group of youth striving for the same goal, and as a part of ARF youth,
we strive for this goal not only in our own cities, but with the rest
of our ungers all over the world,” she said.

Later that evening, the group gathered at the Aladdin Restaurant in
Hackensack, N.J., to enjoy food and dancing.

“I believe that this meeting was a successful event for two
reasons. First, it addressed important issues that our organization
faces and presented solutions. And secondly, the lectures and
discussions were different than the usual take on the subjects,” said
New Jersey AYF attendee Razmig Tchaghlasian.

Founded in 1933, the Armenian Youth Federation (AYF) serves as the
youth organization of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation
(YOARF). The AYF stands on five pillars that guide its activities:
education, political awareness, fellowship, athletics and
culture. Moreover, the AYF promotes a fraternal attitude of respect
for the diversity of ideas and individuals amongst its
membership. Unity and cooperation are essential traits that allow
members of the organization to work together and realize its
objectives.

BAKU: Azeri TV Accuses Tbilisi Of Pro-Armenian Bias

AZERI TV ACCUSES TBILISI OF PRO-ARMENIAN BIAS

Lider TV, Azerbaijan
Sept 25 2005

The Azeri TV station Lider has accused the Georgian authorities of
pro-Armenian bias. It said that whereas Tbilisi has been spending money
on improving the infrastructure in the Armenian-populated Javakhetia
region, local Azeris have been denied the right to buy land or study
in their own language. The following is an excerpt from report by
Azerbaijani TV station Lider on 25 September; subheadings have been
inserted editorially:

[Presenter] Our sources in Tbilisi told us an interesting story last
week. They said that two thirds of the 275m-dollar-fund from the
US Millennium Challenge Account [MCA] for Georgia will be spent on
infrastructure and new roads in Javakhetia where ethnic Armenians live.

[Passage omitted: Ethnic Armenians want autonomy from Tbilisi; police
in Akhalkalaki protested against appointment of a new police chief]

Over 3,000 ethnic Azeri officials replaced

However, the Azerbaijani-populated areas have neither a police
chief nor a high-ranking police officer whereas low-ranking officers
have been dismissed from their posts one by one. A total of 3,400
Azerbaijanis in various posts have been replaced by Georgians since
[Georgian President Mikheil] Saakashvili has come to power. The
policy of discrimination against Georgia’s ethnic Azerbaijanis does
not end there.

[Correspondent over video of Azeris in Georgia] Reports on ethnic
Azerbaijanis in Georgia seemed to be an everyday occurrence which
cannot surprise anyone. Surprising though is another thing. Why does
the Georgian government creates artificial problems which can aggravate
the situation? Why is Tbilisi not treating other ethnic minorities,
for example, Armenians similarly?

[Passage omitted: says that Azerbaijanis in Georgia are the only
ethnos who have repeatedly proved their loyalty to Georgia and quotes
Saakashvili’s interview with Lider TV two years ago]

Nevertheless, it is not hard to prove that everything has gone from
bad to worse over the last two years. Let us take the problem of
land. Although the land reform is now under way, this process cannot
be classified as a reform but the seizure of the Azeri-populated
lands. The lands in the Azerbaijani villages are being transferred
to the Georgian-owned companies but taking no heed of the opinions
of locals, people told a Lider TV correspondent in Georgia. Whenever
people protest against this process, kangaroo courts confirm the
decisions by the executive authorities. There is not a single body
for the helpless Azerbaijanis to lodge their complaints with.

[First unidentified man] Under the new law, the Azerbaijanis here have
been deprived of the right to land. I will be prepared to repeat this
to Saakashvili. The Azerbaijanis are being deprived of their lands. Our
village owns 600-700 ha of lands, of which 70-75 ha are possessed by
a dozen of villagers. The rest is owned by top businessmen.

As for another problem, i.e. the problem of language, it has two
aims. One of them is designed for the future and the other one for
the past. The Azerbaijanis were first uprooted when their historic
villages were renamed.

These villages were groundlessly renamed under [former President
Eduard] Shevardnadze and when we told the Azerbaijani presidential
executive staff and the media about that at the time, they asked us
why we had renamed Ganca. Thirty two villages fell victim to that.

Ban on native language has far-reaching aims

[Correspondent] Second, by restricting the use of the mother tongue,
they are trying to rob our compatriots of their future. Under the
newly-adopted law on education, schools for ethnic minorities will
start teaching in Georgian in the next three years. So, in a short
while, everything will be taught in Georgian. An ethnic language will
be taught as a foreign language.

[Second unidentified man] From 2007, when the law comes into force,
history, geography, mathematics, physics, nature and a series of
social subjects will be taught in Georgian at the non-Georgian
speaking schools. We simply cannot understand this. This just shows
that they are closing down the Azerbaijani-language schools. How can
a pupil study in two languages? What is it for? The aim is to make
the non-Georgians illiterate here.

DM: Armenia Can’t do Professional Army While Azerbaijan Belligerent

ARMENIA CANNOT KEEP A PROFESSIONAL ARMYON THE BACKGROUND OF BELLIGERENT
STATEMENTS

«United integrity and development is impossible in case the President of our
State sees the solution of the problem only in the principle of peace and
conditions the cooperation with neighbour country on regulation of
conflict», RA Minister of Defence Serj Sargsyan during Rose-Roth NATO PA
seminar.

Mr. Sargsyan considers impossible united regional reforms of the sphere of
defence. `Neither war nor peace promote the regional development, it is a
result of non-solved conflict, and that is why military factor has a big
role in state formation. Belligerent statements of our neighbour country
prevent Armenia from comprehensive development. Serj Sargsyan noted that
Armenia can’t realize defence reforms while Azerbaijan comes up with martial
declarations from the highest tribunes; a reform suggests reduction of
strength or a professional army. «Today having powerful armed forces becomes
a priority, and the problem of national interest and population security is
a priority’, – Mr. Sargsyan said adding that we can’t refrain from actions
while Azerbaijan doubles its military expenses and technical means».

That is why Armenia has a close alliance with Russia, cooperates with U. S.
and NATO

HAYEM.ORG’s INTERVIEW OF THE TRIO
The portal of Armenians of Cypriots has carried out an
online interview with the three hopeful candidates which appears on
their main page since yesterday.
1:- If you win, do you promise to attend the losing
parties/organizations events as a common individual even if you are
not invited?
ZARTARIAN
If I win, I will be too drunk at my own party to go anywhere else !
However thru yr forum I invite the two losers to join me for a drink
on Sunday night and to discuss how the three of us can work together
for next eight months for the benefit of our community.
ATAMIAN
Yes.
ASHDJIAN
This has been a topic which I have always considered important.
Throughout the years, I have made an effort to show up at various
events organized by “other” parties/organizations. Many have
witnessed my presence at Melkonian/AGBU events.
Furthermore, my track record in pan-community affairs, such as the
April 24 joint commemoration events, the Minorities Festival in 1999,
the Constitutional Committee in 2003-2004 and the committee
organizing Frank Pallone’s visit, are indications that I have always
worked in a spirit of co-operation with ALL sides.

FORUM ON FIRE !!
The forum at is blazing. A document regarding the sale
of Melkonian has just been posted and uploaded on this yahoo site:

… while the latest posting reads as follows:
_________________________________________ _______
You ask: What did we do to stop the closure of Melkonian.
Unfair question!
Part of the community did not have a say (not in their wildest
dreams) in the running of the school. Can you imagine the Tashnak
Gomideh going into Melkonian and saying (bagh-bagh): “We came to help
you prevent the sale of the school.”
Possible answer: “Kna yaao kordzit!!”
They would have thought: “They might think that there are commissions
in the deal, whereas we are doing this out of our interest for the
good of the school, the goghm, the nation and the motherland!”
Not even the simple members of AGBU had any say in these affairs.
The school served a few purposes for them. Votes, votes, votes and
votes.
The means to get to these purposes were the scholarships they gave
and the jobs and posts they gave to various people.
OF COURSE THE SCHOOL HAD OTHER PURPOSES AND MOST OF THE TEACHERS AND
EMPLOYEES REALLY CARED ABOUT THE SCHOOL WHICH GAVE TO THE NATION
GENERATIONS OF SCHOLARS

BUT
Everybody knows about the mismanagement of the funds by the few elite
who REALLY ran the show behind the curtains and ignored the warnings
of the Central Committee of AGBU and led the school to the current
state.
They must have warned quite a few times. But these people were so
much drugged with the benefits of the school, they ignored the
warnings.

It reminds me of the overcrowded sinking ship, where no one wanted to
jump off to save the ship from sinking. Eventually, no one jumped off
and the ship sank and everybody on-board drowned.

SHAME ON YOU!!!
And these people are now behind the candidacy of Atamyan.
On 9th October, the community should give a strong punch in the face
of the people who let this thing happen.

Raffi Hovhannisian Continues Political Consultation And StartsMeetin

RAFFI HOVHANNISIAN CONTINUES POLITICAL CONSULTATIONS AND STARTS MEETINGS IN ARMENIAN REGIONS

Noyan Tapan News Agency
Oct 5 2005

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 5, NOYAN TAPAN – ARMENIANS TODAY. Raffi Hovhannisian,
founder and head of the Armenian Center for National and International
Studies, Chairman of the “Zharangutiun” (“Heritage”) party, starts a
series of meetings with representatives of public and his supporters
in different regions of the country on the coming Sunday. Raffi
Hovhannisian informed representatives of mass media about it at the
reception in honor of the 11th anniversary of foundation of the
Center. It’s supposed that during these meetings he will explain
party’s negative position on draft constitutional amendments put to
the referendum. Other issues worrying the Armenian society will be
also discussed during the numerous scheduled meetings.

R.Hovhannisian also confirmed that he continues political consultations
on the issue of cooperation with both representatives of opposition
and civil society and the representatives of Armenian power who
realize the seriousness of the situation formed in the country and
the necessity in radical changes.

Raffi Hovhannisian considers that the most important task at the
current stage is to hold the referendum exactly in correspondence
with the international obligations assumed by Armenia. He especially
emphasized that all the stages of the process should be democratic
and transparent, starting from the moment of agitation up to the
calculation of votes, which should guarantee the trust of the society
in the referendum results.

Science Struggles Against Neuclear Terrorism

SCIENCE STRUGGLES AGAINST NUCLEAR TERRORISM
By Ruzan Poghosian

AZG Armenian Daily #178
05/10/2005

“Nuclear and Radio Active Security and Struggle against International
Terrorism” international scientific conference is held within
the framework of “Science for Peace” NATO project in Yerevan. The
conference will last four days. Representatives of 16 countries,
including the US, Canada, France, Belgium, Germany, CIS and other
countries participate in the conference. The conference is organized
by the American “Brookhaven” National Laboratory and the Center for
Leading Sciences and Technologies.

Samvel Apikian, head of the regional office of the Center for Leading
Sciences and Technologies, said that lately, the issue of nuclear
terrorism bothers the whole world and it’s very urgent to hold
such conferences. All the countries struggle against the nuclear
terrorism in three directions, i.e. political, by force and the
scientific approach. He believes that at present the activities of the
scientists involved in nuclear power engineering becomes more and more
important. “The scientists really greatly contribute to this struggle,
as all their achievements belong to the state that uses the science
to struggle against terrorism. Science develops thanks to unanimous
discussions and this is a very important term for its development,”
he said in the interview to “Azg.”

Anita Nilsson, MAGATE representative, touched upon the 2006-2009
plan for nuclear security. The scientists represented their latest
researches, as well as the commitments and the projects of their
countries. It is envisaged that the conference will help the Armenian
scientists, too. They have the opportunity to communicate with the
leading specialists from other countries.

Vahan Hovhannisian, vice-chairman of RA National Assembly, our state
should care about the scientists dealing with the nuclear power
engineering, taking into account the fact that we have a nuclear
power plant. He added that our neighbors are very concerned about
this fact. “There are such terrorist groups that are ready to carry
out terrorist acts using nuclear weapon, ” he said.

The aim of the conference is to unite the scientists of the world,
the international and state structures in the struggle against
nuclear terrorism.

Le Caucase Du Sud Vu De Bruxelles: Entre Pression Et Bons Points

LE CAUCASE DU SUD VU DE BRUXELLES: ENTRE PRESSION ET BONS POINTS

Par Anne-Marie Mouradian
Caucaz Europnews, Bruxelles
26/9/2005

explique-t-on à Bruxelles.
